Conveniently located in WestridgeShopping Center, Pho My Lien offersits customers delicious home-stylecooking at great values. Quite a simpleconcept, yes, but one that has beenwithout fail for more than a decade.
“What we try to achieve here at PhoMy Lien is good family dining at rea-sonable prices. We’ve been in businessin Aiea going on 13 years now andwe’ve gained great support from localfamilies as well as the military,” saysWalter James, a longtime friend of the
Dangs, who also serves as the restau-rant’s financial adviser and marketingplanner. “I’ve known Tommy for 30years. He was one of the original boatpeople who came over from Vietnammany years ago.”
“Lien would often cook for us andwe would always say, ‘You shouldopen up a restaurant.’ We kept jokingwith her because her food was sogood. So, one day she came to me andsaid that she and Tommy would like toopen up a restaurant, so, of course, Igladly offered my support and helpedthem.”
Pho My Lien originally opened itsdoors in 1999 in Waikiki before relo-cating nine years later to its currentlocation. According to James, themove has offered nothing but successfor the Dangs.
“There’s nothing better than partak-ing in comfort food within a friendlyand relaxed atmosphere. Hawaii is amelting pot when it comes to food, andupon your first visit to Pho My Lien, Iknow that you’re going to like it. Wehaven’t changed the menu in almost 10years,” explains James, adding thatLien does the majority of the cookingfrom her own family recipes that she’stweaked a bit over the years.
Tried-and true favorites from PhoMy Lien’s expansive menu includeCrispy Spring Rolls ($7.50 for fourpieces) — filled with pork, chickenand shrimp along with shredded car-rots, long rice and mushroom, thendeep-fried until golden brown, andserved with lettuce, mint leaves, ricenoodles and a homemade sauce; andSummer Rolls (two for $4.95) — withrice vermicelli, mint leaves, beansprouts and your choice of boiledshrimps, shredded pork, barbecuebeef, barbecue pork, barbecue chicken
The husband-and-wife team of Tommy andLien Dang are living the American Dream. As owners of Pho My Lien, an authentic
Vietnamese restaurant in Aiea, this dynamicduo is well aware of the value of hard work anddedication. Originally from Vietnam, the Dangshave the ultimate recipe for success, alongwith the freshest of ingredients that are incor-porated into Pho My Lien’s cuisine.
WalterJames, andTommy and LienDang presentPho My Lienspecialties.
RiceVermicelli withBarbecueChicken andSpring Rolls($9.95)
GreenPapaya Salad($7.50)
or tofu wrapped in a rice sheet and servedwith a special peanut sauce or fish sauce.
“What sets Pho My Lien’s cuisine apartfrom other restaurants is its commitmentto absolute freshness,” James says.“Tommy goes to Chinatown almost everyday to purchase fresh, locally grown veg-etables. You’ll notice every dish has anice crisp, wholesome and fresh taste.”
The taste James speaks of is very muchapparent in the restaurant’s ChickenSalad ($7.50) and Green Papaya Salad($7.50).
“This Papaya Salad is the best that I’veever had,” James says of the dish, whichcomes with shredded green papaya andshrimp mixed with mint leaves andpeanuts, and is splashed with a house spe-cial salad dressing.
Best known for its exorbitant array ofoutstanding dishes, Pho My Lien’s ever-present deals have always drawn incrowds of eager diners as well. Everymonth, the establishment offers anunbeatable special for $4.99 or less. Thismonth’s special is Vietnamese ChickenSalad ($4.99).
“Coming up next month, we’ll be fea-turing three in-house specials, each pricedat $7.99, including Shrimp Fried Rice;Barbecue Chicken, Summer Rolls andSpring Rolls with Rice Vermicelli; andSummer Rolls and Spring Rolls with RiceVermicelli,” James says.
Yet, it’s the pho that will always remaina signature item on the menu. This tradi-tional Vietnamese beef noodle soup issaid to be a daily tonic and elixir that
clears the head and warms the heart. Eachbowl of pho is served with herbs, mintleaves, bean sprouts, chili pepper, lemonwedges and special sauces. And cus-tomize it just the way you like it byselecting from as many as five choices ofmeat to accompany the dish: slices of raresteak, well-done beef flank, soft tendon, tripe and beef balls. Other popular phodishes are Pho with Chicken Meat, Phowith Mixed Vegetables and Pho withShrimp and Squid.
“The pho has a great, refreshing taste. It’s almost like shabu shabu,” Jamesstates, noting that while Vietnamese cui-sine has gone mainstream on the localdining scene, Lien has been able to makeher own cuisine.
“We attribute all of Pho My Lien’s suc-cess to the food and hard work thatTommy and Lien put in every day. Theyare here seven days a week, 10 hours perday, 360 days a year,” he adds. “We havea bunch of repeat customers, and we’dlike to thank all of our loyal customers foralways coming back to dine here. Wecouldn’t be happier.”
For the Dangs, what once was a dreamis now a “phobulous” reality.

Yakiniku Million has beena grilling, slurping andoverall tasty place for
everything Korean for nearlythree decades, and the appetizersare no exception. Whether youhave a hankering for somethingcrunchy, spicy, rich or juicy, you’ll likely find it on the menu.
There may be no better intro-duction to Million’s pupu menuthan the Nok Do Jeon or MungBean Pancake ($6). The beansare ground to form a base flourthat is then mixed with beansprouts, kim chee, kalbi beef, and fried to a dark, crispy brown.
Another handy finger food isGoon Man Doo ($5). Large won-ton wrappers are stuffed withtofu, long rice, onion and beef. The flaky skins shimmer on theplate and the tender pockets ofgoodness are tasty whether youuse the special soy-based dippingsauce or not. And that’s how itshould be.
Having enough pupus to sharewith a few friends is critical.Having enough to share with fiveor six is even better. Jok-Bal(Steamed Sliced Pig Feet) is aheaping plate of simply-preparedpork off the hoof and served with
Romaine lettuce, sesame leavesand side flavorings, whichinclude jalapeno, garlic, misopaste, and a salt and shrimppaste. At $19.95, the pile of ten-der pork is not only a fun, inter-active way to dine but it’s an eco-nomical way to share a starterwith a half dozen of your favoritefriends or family members.
Million is famed for its semi-secretive house sauce that isfound adorning several dishes onthe menu. The ingredients aren’tnearly as important as the pleas-ure one gets from eating a dish
with the deep red liquid, such asPan Fried Spicy Octopus($15.95). Fresh octopus issauteed with zucchini, onion, carrots and that flavorful sweat-producing sauce.
Obviously, this space isn’tlarge enough to list all the menufavorites at Million. No worries.Just ask a friend, a coworker, anauntie or uncle, or just some ran-dom person on the street. They’ve all been to the inimaterestaurant on the small backstreet that produces some of thebest Korean food on Oahu.

KITCHEN INSIDER
Who or what inspires you as achef/manager/owner? I used towork at the Chinese restaurant insideMiramar Hotel, and the chef at thattime was the No. 1 chef in HongKong. His cooking and managementskills were good, and yet he remainedvery humble and friendly to every-one. He became my idol instantly.
If you could serve food to acelebrity, who would it be andwhy? What dish would you serve? The Secretary General of China. Ithink that’s a dream for all Chineserestaurant workers/owners. We didserve the Chief Administrator ofHong Kong at Jade Dynasty before.
What is your favorite dish on themenu? Why? Smoked Chickenwith Chrysanthemum Flavor is mymost favorite dish because the taste
is so rich and distinctive. I neverhave experienced something similarto that in the Islands.
Is there a dish that you create
that’s not on your menu, butavailable upon request? Crab withMochi Rice in Lotus Leaf. It’s noton our regular menu, but if peoplerequest it, we can create it.

One of the best gifts you can givethe chief cook and bottle washerin your life is a break from the
kitchen during holiday get-togethers.Gathering for a special meal in a greatrestaurant is fun, but deciding on theperfect venue that will please everyone
in your party, including veg-etarians, sometimes can be abit difficult.
Lobster King — yes, really —actually has an ample selection of vege-tarian dishes, which makes it an excel-lent venue for group dining. The wel-
coming, comfortable ambianceand diverse menu are just the tick-
et for a fun family holiday celebration.Along with all that seafood, Lobster
King knows a thing or two about veg-etables, and owner June Kim is happy torecommend a few customer favorites.
Fried rice is always a crowd-pleaser,and even carnivores won’t miss themeat in Lobster King’s egg-freeVegetable Fried Rice ($9.25).
Jai ($9.95) or Monk’s Style MixedVegetables, is a favorite for ChineseNew Year, but Lobster King offers it allyear round.
You can’t go wrong with stir-fry, andLobster King offers a variety for non-meat eaters. Stir-fried Bean with GarlicSauce ($9.95) is healthy and full of gar-licky goodness, and if green beans don’tdo it for you, there are spinach and water-cress dishes prepared in the same style.
To spice up your meal, MeatlessSauteed Szechwan Eggplant ($9.95) is asavory favorite, and Kim assures vege-tarians that no oyster sauce is used in itspreparation. Stir-fried Ong Choy withChili and Bean Curd Sauce ($9.95) is
another spicy option. “That’s reallygood,” says Kim.
Vegetables Served with IcebergLettuce Wrap ($9.95) is a fun concept.“When vegetarians come in, they orderthis one,” she says. “People like that.”As its name implies, chopped vegetablesincluding carrots, choy sum, baby corn, water chestnuts, onions — “all kinds ofmixed vegetables,” notes Kim — areserved with iceberg lettuce leaves forwrapping up all that veggie goodness.
And if your Chinese meal isn’t com-plete without noodles, just ask for a veg-etarian version of chow mein or chowfun.
Of course, Lobster King is known forits fresh crustaceans, and offers a holi-day party menu that feeds 10-12 people. The nine-course meal costs $188 andincludes three live lobsters for thoseseafood lovers in your life. Call fordetails.

All the holiday delec-tables will put you andyour tummy in good spir-its, while giving you greatgift options for friends, family or coworkers.
Larry’s Bakery is proudto introduce its Christmas-Shaped Lilikoi Loaf($19.95), and according toco-owner Iris Yafuso, it’sthe perfect gift to give thisholiday season.
“A lot of companies aregiving it to clients, or for
when they go to people’shomes,” she says, also not-ing that the staff can writea personalized messageatop the pastry. “We have itin a regular loaf style, likea pound cake, but we put itin the shape of a Christmas
tree for the season.”There also is a regular
loaf style available thatresembles a pound cake. But for Christmas, Larry’sreally gets into the holidayspirit and creates it in theshape of a festive tree.
Nothing really says holi-days like the jolly colors ofthe lights and gift wrappingpaper, and the ChristmasColor Butter Loaf ($6.50)fits the jovial mood.
“The Christmas ColorButter Bread we actuallydo year round, with differ-ent colors each holiday,”says Yafuso of the highlyrequested Christmas item.“This is always popular.”
The dough is braided
before being baked, whichgives it that unique look, and Yafuso says theseloaves are perfect forHalloween (black andorange) or even Easter(pastels), as well.
If you’re like manylocals on the island, it’shard to forget the palmleaves Larry’s Bakeryserved up in the past. Andjust for the holidays, theestablishment is comingout with Mini Palm Leaves(six pieces, $2.50). Theselittle delights normally areput into the gift baskets, but they’re also available ala carte (which means youcan snack on them at yourconvenience).
This year, Larry’s Bakeryhas special Christmas hoursto cater to its loyal clientele. From this Sunday (Dec. 16)until the end of the year, thebakery will be open from 6a.m. to noon on Saturdaysand Sundays, and from 6 a.m.to 1 p.m. on weekdays.
Yafuso says she’ll be
busy creating lots of giftbaskets and Christmascookies, and there’s nodoubt Larry’s puts a lot oftender-loving care in eachand every pastry. So, makesure to order in advanceand take some of that fami-ly-style TLC with you to allyour holiday get-togethers.

ust in time for the holidays, Ho Ho ChineseCuisine is serving up a special buffet to helpdiners celebrate with family and friends. The restaurant will be adding special items
to its already supple buffet such as roastturkey, prepared the same way as traditionalChinese roast duck, roasted ham, as well asspecial beef and pork dishes to complementexisting buffet favorites such as snow crablegs, salt and pepper shrimp, steamed fish filletwith a ginger onion soy sauce and mussels in ablack bean and basil sauce. And, as generalmanager James Ching explains, the specialholiday buffet also will include Ho Ho’s“famous” pumpkin custard pie, which hasbecome a seasonal favorite of those visitingthe Kapolei eatery this time of year.
The special holiday buffet will be availableChristmas Eve, Christmas Day, New Year’sEve and New Year’s Day for $12.95 at lunchand $19.95 for dinner (children’s prices arediscounted according to height, and thoseunder the age of 3 eat for free).
“The roast turkey is cooked in the oven withfire, just like roast duck hanging in the win-dows of Chinatown,” says Ching whendescribing the centerpiece of the much-antici-pated holiday buffet. “It’s tasty and juicy, andthe skin is nice and crispy. We still have saltand pepper shrimp available on the buffet, too,as well as honey lemon mayo shrimp.”
At the Kapolei eatery, authentic Chinesefood is fused with local-style preparation tech-niques, and customers can choose from numer-ous selections served up on the all-you-can-eatbuffet, or order specific favorites a la carte. The eatery, which gets its name from theCantonese phrase for “very good,” or “nice,” iswell-known for its salt and pepper shrimp.
“It’s been the most popular since we openedin 2004,” says owner Crystal Chan of the salt–and-pepper style that also incorporates garlicand other flavorful accents surrounding thedeep-fried delicacies. “The customers like itvery much, they don’t want us to change!”
The shrimp and snow crab legs headline HoHo’s traditional dinner buffet, which gets
under way nightly at 5 p.m. The spread fea-tures a wide range of selections including theextremely popular fried chicken wings, walnutshrimp and steamed sea bass with ginger onionand soy sauce, and is priced at an economical$17.95 Monday through Thursday nights, and$19.95 Friday through Sunday evenings.Additionally, selected items are available onHo Ho’s lunch buffet that is served from 10
a.m. to 2:30 p.m. daily, and is light on the wal-let at just $9.95 Monday through Friday, and$11.95 on weekends.
“You get good food at a good price, I don’tthink you can find another dinner buffet likethis for under $20 like we offer,” says Ching, who notes that the recent economic downturnhas been hard on the local community. Despitethe increases in food cost because of a host ofuncontrollable factors, Ho Ho’s prices haveremained affordable, and loyal customers keepcoming back for more. “We combine localtouches with traditional Hong Kong-stylecooking to keep a unique touch on our recipes. We also offer a lot of free parking and a niceview of Kapolei.”
Ho Ho’s offers a full a la carte menu, alongwith favorites from the buffet, as well as a hostof other dishes, including everything fromroasted duck ($9.95 half, $19.95 whole) to anassortment of noodle plates such as the mixedseafood chow min with vegetables ($8.95) andoyster sauce chicken chow mein ($7.50).Customers are encouraged to call ahead forlarge party reservations as special group dis-counts are available for the buffet and individ-ual dishes. Ho Ho’s buffet makes it easy forgroups, as the food stays hot and fresh as din-ers arrive in waves — the perfect solution forthat favorite cousin or uncle who operates onHawaiian Time.
And, for those looking for a quick bite in themorning, Ho Ho’s opens at 6 a.m. Mondaythrough Saturday, and 8 a.m. Sundays, andoffers an assortment of freshly-madeManapua. The eatery serves up both baked($1.35) and steamed ($1.25) Manapua, andalso offers local favorites including shrimpdumplings, pork hash and half moons.

Max’s of ManilaTransport your taste buds to the
Philippines without leaving the comfort ofhome at Max’s of Manila. Located onDillingham Boulevard and in Waipahu,Max’s of Manila has been serving up afiesta of Filipino specialties, includingAdobo, Kare-Kare, Pancit and, of course,
its renowned Max’s Fried Chicken, toname a few. Yet, if you consider yourselfmore of a seafood connoisseur, indulge in atraditional Filipino soup, Sinigang, andrequest to have it with shrimp (pork andmilkfish are other options). ShrimpSinigang ($9.25 regular, $15.50 large) is amust-try, and is a tangy tamarind soup, per-fect for the winter months. Assorted veg-etables of ong choy, eggplant, long greenbeans and okra also complement the dish.
A personal favorite of mine, Sinigangwith shrimp boasts a multitude of flavors, and the shrimp is absolutely divine when
soaked in the delicious broth. Max’s ofManila makes pure magic with each andevery bowl. So, the next time you findyourself at the restaurant, tucked away ina booth with a hot, steaming bowl ofSinigang in front of you — really, all youneed is a spoon, fork and, most of all, anappetite and you’re good to go! What canI say? Max’s of Manila makes me happy!

If you were to say “Thaifood” and “Hawaii” inthe same sentence,
“Let’s go to Keo’s” wouldlikely be the phrase thatfollows. That’s becauserestaurateur and chef KeoSananikone has stood atthe epicenter of Thai cui-sine since 1977. His exotic, savory and authentic fla-vors have made Keo’s ThaiCuisine the largest andlongest-running eatery ofits kind in the state. Hisdishes also have garnered
acclaim from countlessnotable publications aswell as celebrities, politi-cians and even royalty.
Sananikone insists it’snot the glitz and glam thatkeeps regulars comingback for more. Instead, it’sthe simplicity of freshingredients that gives hismenu an outstanding repu-tation.
“It’s always been goodThai food that has madeKeo’s popular amonglocals and tourists for the
past 35 years,” explainsSananikone. A combina-tion of spry vegetables, herbs and spices — whichthe chef grows locally on
his own farm — preparedin traditional recipes iswhat gives the establish-ment its delicious factor.
If you haven’t been toKeo’s, this holiday seasonand New Year’s Eve is theperfect time to go because,in addition to its regularmenu, the eatery is offeringComplete Set Dinner spe-cials featuring some of itsbest-selling menu items.

Crispy Noodles followedby a green papaya salad.
Then choose from suchtantalizing entrees asCashew Nuts withChicken or GarlicBeef withMushrooms.
Also on the specialmenu is the restau-

with chicken. This mysti-fying red curry combinescreamy coconut milk withbeautiful herbs and spicesfor a flavor that is the epit-ome of Thai curry.
Deluxe Set Dinner B($39.95) also features
appetizers, salad, an entreeand dessert, but it is aseafood-lover’s dreamcome true. For the maincourse, diners may choosefrom Evil Jungle Princewith shrimp, SeafoodMedley, Crispy Fish or aGreen Vegetarian Curry.
Keo suggests trying thedevourable SeafoodMedley prepared with aspicy sweet-and-sour sauceas well as mixed vegeta-bles. You won’t go wrongwith Crispy Fish either, which you can dress up
with a hot Thai red currysuace, spicy fresh basil andchili sauce or mild garlicshiitake mushroom sauce.

Since Hapawas the first group to perform at Chai’s when wefirst opened, there’s no better way than to havethem perform for our closing,” he adds.

“There will be no butter at my new restaurant,”he explains. “I want to teach people how to eathealthier since, as they say, ‘You are what youeat.’
“To me, moderation is key. People have differ-ent dietary needs to suit their health-consciouslifestyle.”

The husband-and-wife ownersRaymond and Shirley Kodani took acouple of years off to spend more timewith their family, but now they’reback. And their food is just as goodas ever.
Raymond describes the restau-rant’s food as a “compromise” anda “hybrid” of both traditionalKorean foods and local flavors.
“We are not doing all of the regu-lar, standard Korean meals, but weare doing some of the traditional ones. But then we also have ‘hybrid’ ones,
because some of the tastes we adaptfor the local crowd,” he explains.
Like at its former location, therestaurant focuses on takeout.Raymond estimates that most dishestake just about 5 to 8 minutes to pre-pare.
“We can do pretty much anythingfor takeout, even the soups and thecatering (dishes).
orean Hibiscus BBQ comes toKaimuki from Aina Haina ShoppingCenter, where it had been for 14
years before closing its doors in 2010. But to the delight of manydiners, co-owners Raymond and Shirley Kodani re-opened KoreanHibiscus BBQ at its new location on Waialae Avenue in January.
“A lot of our customers actually come from Aina Haina now, andthey remember us,” Raymond says. “I guess when you have beensomewhere for 14 years, you kind of grow up with a family, andyou become part of their family.”
Before opening up their Aina Haina restaurant, Shirley worked at
a variety of restaurants, primarily in counter service, and Raymondworked in electronics. But Shirley, who learned to cook from hermother, had a longtime dream to open up her own place. Not longafter Korean Hibiscus BBQ opened, Raymond decided to comeaboard and help his wife with running the restaurant.
“All the recipes, all the seasonings — it’s all hers,” he says ofhis wife.
Raymond hopes that more of their regular customers from theirother location come and visit them, and grab a tasty bite to eat.
“We have seen a lot of our former customers,” he adds, “andit’s nice to see those familiar faces.”

Saba Fillet ($9)
BBQ Beef ($9.50) BBQ Chicken ($9)
People can just call in their order, and we will get itready, and they can swing by and pick it up. It is prettyfast and straight forward.”
Korean Hibiscus BBQ lives up to its namesake, asRaymond says that the barbecue items are among themost popular. These include BBQ Beef ($9.50) and BBQChicken ($9) — both tasty, tender dishes.
If is seafood you’re after, look no further than SabaFillet ($9), a light, flavorful fish.
But if you can’t seem to decide on just one entree, noproblem. The restaurant offers a variety of combinationmeals. There are the three entree combinations, includ-ing Korean Hibiscus Sampler ($11.50), which includeskalbi, barbecue beef and barbecue chicken.
The Two-Combo Plate ($10.75) allows you to choosefrom 10 different items. Possible combinations, forexample, are the Two-Combo Plate Fish Jun andZucchini Jun ($10.75) and the Two-Combo Plate MeatJun and Spicy BBQ Chicken ($10.75).
With its regular or combination meals, customers alsohave the option of selecting four side dishes out of 13options, including various types of kimchee, long rice, macaroni salad, corn, seaweed, daikon, choi sum andsweet potato.
“This gives our customers a lot of variety,” Raymondsays. “Even if two customers order the same thing …each meal will be uniquely designed for the individualbecause you are choosing what you want.”
Raymond says that with all of the restaurant’s combi-nation meals, there are 50 different options total.

Regarded as a premier choicein local dining, OceanHouse, situated in
Outrigger Reef on the BeachHotel, welcomes its guests to awhole new world of possibilities.Feel right at home while soakingin the oceanfront views and mar-velous sunsets, all the while par-taking in delicious cuisine, whichpatrons have delighted in for thepast 10 years.
Most recently, Ocean House hasbrought a new executive chef onboard. Aurelio Garcia joined thestaff about a month ago and offers34 years of culinary experience.
“We are very happy to haveChef Aurelio join our team,” saysrestaurant general manager DavidNagaishi. “Chef Aurelio is verytalented. He is a hands-on chef andlikes to work side by side with hiscrew.”
“I really like the energy here andthe staff has been very welcom-ing,” Garcia adds. “The atmos-phere is wonderful and the qualityof the food is great.”
Originally known for its pre-dominant seafood selection,Ocean House offers a meaty selec-tion of entrees as well, such as itsHawaiian Sea Salt Slow RoastedPremium Angus Prime Rib, whichmakes mouths water on a dailybasis. Yet, Green Onion SteamedMonchong ($32.50) will alwaysremain a top choice among diners. An island favorite, this tenderpiece of fish is served with yuzuchinoise sauce and a blend of stir-fried vegetables.
“We’re known for our richselection of food, so I want tomake sure I serve everything thebest as possible,” Garcia says, not-ing that he plans to incorporate anincrease of local products to themenu. “A special of mine that Irecently featured is Pan-SearedOpakapaka with Maui Gold
pineapple and Hilo-grown ginger. As for starters, I really enjoy theEdamame Hummus.”
According to Nagaishi,Edamame Hummus ($11.50) is abest-selling appetizer on the menuwith its seasoned soy bean pureeserved with crisp tofu cakes driz-zled in a balsamic vinaigrette.
And, of course, we all knowdessert is the most important partof each meal, so there will alwaysbe room for Uncle Moki’sChocolate Lava Flow Cake ($10),which features a triple chocolatesemi-sweet chocolate fudge cakewith a scoop of vanilla bean icecream.

As the sturdy and stunning flowerfor which it is named continuesto bloom season after season,
year after year, Camellia Buffet hasblossomed again following a short respite.
The family-owned operation hassatisfied Hawaii diners’ appetites fornearly 40 years with Korean and otherlocal favorites that are cooked yakiniku-style on grills situated at every table. The current incarnation of CamelliaBuffet is situated in Stadium Mall, atthe location formerly occupied by PizzaHut, and has drawn a host of new andreturning customers eager to dig in tothe all-you-can-eat buffet, which featuresboth the traditional yakiniku meats andvegetables for grilling as well as fully-prepared selections served hot and freshon the buffet line.
The Camellia story began in 1977 asJaeshin Park, a former Korean Airemployee who brought his family toHawaii just years prior, opened the firstof what would be nine restaurant locations,in Waikiki. After Park suffered a strokefive years ago, he and his family decidedto scale back operations, eventuallyclosing what had served as the lastCamellia location in Pearl Kai in February. However, after an overwhelming showof support by customers who missedtheir yakiniku fix, Park’s son, Ronnie, and daughter, Kris, decided to bringback the iconic buffet to keep the restau-rant’s legacy alive.
“The camellia is a very strong flowerthat is always in bloom, so the restaurantis always blooming, too” explains Kris, who manages the restaurant while Ronnieserves as owner. “We were going toretire completely, but our loyal customerskept calling and asking us to open abuffet on this side of the island, and welive in Salt Lake, so when we passed thelocation and found it was empty, that’show we ended up here today.”
While Jaeshin has slowed down sig-nificantly after suffering the stroke, hestill enjoys eating his Camellia favorites. On a recent visit by Dining Out, theformer restaurateur was at the eatery
enjoying some of his favorite buffetitems, cooking them to perfection onthe easy-to-use grill powered by butanecanisters. While the original buffet inWaikiki featured an exclusively Koreanmenu, the current version of Camelliaoffers a host of Korean favorites as wellas local-style dishes that make up someof the hot buffet items.
The bountiful buffet is available dailyat lunch ($14.95 for adults and $7.95 forchildren, served from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.)and dinner ($24.95 for adults and $12.95for children, served from 5 to 10 p.m.),and a 10-percent discount is availablefor members of the military and seniors,
Monday through Thursday. The savoryspread includes Kal Bi short ribs, barbecue chicken, spicy chicken, barbecuebeef and pork, fried noodles, fish jun, mixed seafood stir-fry, Korean spicychicken karaage and a host of soups, vegetables and fruit. The dinner selectionsinclude the aforementioned items aswell as shrimp, cubed beef sirloin,Korean crab and steamed clams servedin a special house sauce.
Takeout plates also are available from11 a.m. to 3 p.m., and include four veg-etable selections and white or brownrice. Some of the plate lunches includeBBQ Beef ($7.95), BBQ Chicken ($7.95),Fish Jun ($7.95) and Fried Mandoo($6.95). Diners also can create a combi-nation plate with two of their favoriteselections for $9.95.
“Our lunch price is really reasonable,”explains Kris. “You go to any takeoutplace, and the kal bi alone is $11. Here, you can get kal bi plus all the othermeats to cook yakiniku, plus fish andother items. We’re trying to keep ourprices low so that our loyal localcustomers will keep coming back andenjoying our food.”
Just in time for the holidays, Camelliaalso offers a catering menu to aid inplanning a special party or gathering.Platters of shrimp, kal bi, spicy chickenand other favorites are available inmedium and large platters ranging from$45 to $185.
