Sure, it’s being said that SelenaGomez has had her fill of JustinBieber considering the recent
breakup of this young Hollywood cou-ple, but that’s deinitely not the casewhen it comes to me and food. Thismight sound silly, but if food was aperson, I know that we’d be amatch made in heaven!
And with Thanksgiving justaround the corner, it’s guaranteedthat the holiday favorites and allthe fixings such as turkey, stuffing,mashed potatoes and pumpkin pie,will be at the forefront of every-one’s minds.
But believe me, the consumptionof all this hearty cuisine may comeas a shock to your body, so to pre-pare for the feast(s) ahead, thisweek, I decided it would be theperfect time to stuff myself sillywith foods that are, well, stuffy in agood way. Let’s see … crab stuffedmahi mahi, bacon-wrapped shrimpand scallops, stuffed salmon — Iknow you’re hungry!
So, without further ado, let theeating frenzies begin as I fill up onthe best “stuffed” dishes at the fol-lowing Ono, You Know establish-ments. Who knows? One of thesedishes may just be Selena’s or theBiebs’ perfect cure for a brokenheart.

entree capitalizes on great taste, asthe roasted salmon features apanko garlic crust exterior stuffedwith a blend of crab meat, spinach,mayo and seasonings. The meat ismelt-in-your-mouth tender servedwith a shiitake mushroom creamsauce and then topped with a sweetteriyaki drizzle.
“The shiitake mushroom creamsauce is our signature sauce thatSam is famous for,” says generalmanager Jeffrey Gaspar. “This spe-cific dish has been on our menu forabout two years and our customersseem to really enjoy it.”

“Each month we like to featurea couple new items, and since it’sNovember, it only makes senseto feature none other than pump-kin (items) and, of course, we goall out with our selectionbecause of the holidays,” saysJay Crisologo, creative specialistfor Napoleon’s Bakery. “Thisyear we brought back all of ourpumpkin favorites and our regu-lar assortment as well.”
Among these Thanksgivingspecialties are Pumpkin ChiffonPie ($9.95*) and PumpkinCoffee Cake Square ($1.65*each). Pumpkin Chiffon Pie is atwist on the traditional pumpkinpie and features a light, creamyand smooth texture of a chiffonpie. As for Pumpkin Coffee CakeSquare, this morsel of heavenpresents patrons with a moistpumpkin cake striped with creamcheese filling and streuselcrumbs.

Of course, you don’t have tobe diabetic or limiting your sugarintake to enjoy these tasty treats,but the fact that it’s better foryou, Crisologo says, is just icingon the cake.
“Production greatly increasesduring the holidays,” he adds.“Napoleon’s Bakery has a largeassortment of delicacies tochoose from. Some people mayhave forgotten about our HaupiaChocolate Cake ($14.35*). Itwas a featured item last year andit was a hot commodity, so wedecided to include it as part ofour everyday selection.”
Other bakery classics includeChantilly Cake ($16.95*), PeachBavarian Cake ($14.35*),Dream Cake ($15.75*) and theestablishment’s best-sellerDobash Cake ($14.35*).
“All of our cakes are veryaffordable and we have a nice
variety to choose from. We alsoserve a nice selection of piessuch as custard, pumpkin, apple,banana cream, chocolate cream,lemon meringue and Jell-Ocream pie,” says Crisologo. “Ourpumpkin pie recipe has been thesame since we opened our doorsback in 1983.”
Fitting with the season,Pumpkin ($8.50*) and Custard($8.50*) top the list of mostsought-after pies. Customers justcan’t seem to get enough of thesesweet nothings.
“Our baked goods are veryaffordable. We use the freshestingredients and the presentationis always very nice,” he con-firms.
So, what is it that makesNapoleon’s Bakery stand out fromthe rest? According to Crisologo,it’s all about convenience.
“We have so many locationsscattered across the island.Sometimes you may be in arush to get a cake or pie for aparty, and you can come hereand pick up a homemade itemin minutes.”

Furikake chicken ($8) isone of the most popularitems on the menu, says
Jun Tsuchiya, who ownsSakura Restaurant with hisbrother, chef Ryo Tsuchiya.It’s no wonder. The chicken isa little sweet and, thanks to itspreparation, is very juicy.Tsuchiya begins by marinat-ing the chicken in a mochikosauce before deep frying thetender pieces. Topped withthe house-made teriyakisauce and furikake, it’s a tasty
way to introduce the rest ofSakura’s mix of local andJapanese favorites.
Ahi Carpaccio ($13.50) isanother good-to-go item.Sashimi-grade ahi is slicedthin, topped with a dark bal-samic vinaigrette, and servedwith shredded onion, daikonand carrots. It’s buttery ahiwith the slight snap of a goodvinaigrette — tasty.
My personal favorite isMiso Tofu ($8), a crispy,creamy appetizer that looks
more like a dessert thansomething with whichyou begin your meal. SoftJapanese tofu is deep-fried until crunchy thencoated with Sakura’s spe-cial miso sauce andbaked. Cutting into thetwo large pieces of tofureveals the shiny interiorthat nearly sparklesagainst the darkened exterior.No, it’s not a dessert, but theslight sweetness of the misowill make you think it is.
If the goal is to get some-thing beefy, or porky, SpareRibs ($13.50) and WafuRibeye Steak ($24) are justthe kind of shareable options

It’s evident in thesound of utensils clinkingtogether as patrons delveinto breakfast delights, aswell as the sight of hard-working employees, whosefriendly spirits havealready added character tothe restaurant’s crisp yel-low walls just waiting to bebroken in.
You’ll also take pleasurein the enticingly sweetwhiff of fresh pancake bat-ter that swirls about theeatery daily; it’s the samesensational scent localsand tourists have cravedsince the original Eggs ‘nThings opened in Waikikiin 1974. A new PiikoiStreet eatery marks thethird venture in Eggs ‘n
Things’ line of breakfasthavens, and it got down tobusiness with a festivegrand opening Nov. 10-11,complete with hula, prizesand unique specials.
“The opening was defi-nitely a success,” says gen-eral manager MichaelSkedeleski. “The morningwas crazy packed. We werealso giving away a freebeach bag to the first 100people who ordered at least$19.74, in honor of ouropening year.”
Most importantly, thecelebration featured arenowned menu of morn-ing classics, includingitems that have beenaround since the begin-ning. “The Early Riser($7.95) was always one ofthe most popular dishesfrom the original 1974menu,” explainsSkedeleski. During the
opening, this plate of eggsand buttermilk pancakeswas offered at its first-everprice — 99 cents! Eventhough the special wasonly available from 6 to7:30 a.m., diners lined upbright and early for a biteof the light and fluffy pan-cakes that made this estab-lishment famous.
In addition to a tradition-al stack of the buoyant hot-cakes, patrons may enjoythem dressed up with avariety of luxurious top-
pings such as StrawberryWhip Cream with Nuts($12.75). A taste of house-made pineapple or guavasyrup takes any pancake toanother level. “There’s alocal flair to all our dish-es,” adds Skedeleski.
Diners looking for some-thing savory will love a
Ham & Cheese Omelet($10.75), delicately craftedinto a thin layer of egg thatblankets ham and yourchoice of melted Cheddar,mozzarella or pepper jack.Ali Carte suggests going all
out with potatoes and saucyhomemade salsa on the side.

Get ready for a journey ofa lifetime — a culinaryjourney, that is — at Five
Star International Buffet. In aclass of its very own, Five StarInternational Buffet shines newlight on your traditional all-you-can-eat buffet concept as it pres-ents you with a delectablespread of avant-garde interna-tional cuisine.
The restaurant was first con-ceived in Hokkaido, Japan, in2003, and today you’ll comeacross three additional locations inHokkaido and one exclusivelytucked away on the third level ofBuilding C at Royal HawaiianCenter in the heart of Waikiki. Asthe first and only location outsideof Japan, the company’s founderNoriyuki Kato couldn’t wait toshare his revolutionary buffet con-cept with locals and visitors alikeright here in our island home.
And, of course, Dining Outcouldn’t imagine a better personto bring along on this incredibleDining with the Stars culinaryjourney than Denby Dung. Many
may recognize her as the TV hostof The Pet Hui on OC-12 andMiss Hawaii 2001, but she alsoserves as a flight attendant forHawaiian Airlines, so it seemedperfectly fitting to take thisopportunity to twist things up andexplore the globe foodie-style.
“I’ve worked for HawaiianAirlines for two years now andhave been able to travel to manyplaces including Sydney,Australia, Japan and Las Vegas,to name a few. Hawaiian Airlineshas four different routes to Japanand I recently returned fromSapporo. But this is my first timeeating here at Five StarInternational Buffet,” Dung says.
At what seemed like an end-less buffet line, Dung filled herplate with international fareranging from Japanese to French,Italian, Hawaiian and more. Thelunch buffet is priced at $19.99per person and the dinner buffetcosts $48. Five Star Enterprisesvice president Victoria Wah Hinand the rest of the staff also pre-sented our star with exquisite
platters of food, which featureditems from the dinner buffet.
“I’m a big fan of buffets and Ilove to try a little bit of every-thing, or as I did here ... a lot ofeverything,” Dung says with alaugh. “The food here is deli-cious. I loved the Loco Moco,Kakuni Pork and RosemaryBacon-Wrapped Meatloaf.”
The spread fit for a queen alsoconsisted of Swai Mousse with aRed Pepper Sauce, Lobster Tailwith a Sweet Asian Sauce andFried Onions, Short Ribs withBlack Pepper Demi Glaze andGarlic, Dynamite Scallops, CrabLegs, Shrimp Tempura, Ahi andSalmon Nigiri and more. Andthings got even sweeter withelaborate dessert options includ-ing New York Cheesecake,Tiramisu and Fruit Roll Cake.
“What makes us unique is thatwe don’t use chafing dishes. Wepresent our food on big plattersand all buffet items are served insmaller portions,” Wah Hin says.“We constantly replenish every-thing in the buffet line to make
sure that it’s fresh.”“I’m already thinking of a spe-
cial occasion so that I can bringmy family here,” Dung adds.
You may wonder how Dungmaintains her trim figure as shesays she hardly works out.Incomprehensible, we know. Yet,once you are in the presence of herbubbly personality and contagioussmile, you sit and talk for a bit andsoon realize how incredibly busyshe is, and it all seems to makesense. You also can add model,actress, composer and musician to
her long list of professions.“I’ve been a musician in The
Royal Hawaiian Band for 13years. I play the clarinet andsometimes saxophone, as well asemcee at different events,”shares Dung, who also recentlyappeared in Hawaii Five-0 as aHawaiian Airlines flight atten-dant. On top of that, she’s per-formed in numerous DiamondHead Theatre musical produc-tions, such as You Somebody,Flower Drum Song and TheProducers.

Who or what inspires you as achef/manager/owner? I reallylove to taste different cuisines. Itallows me to try and experimentwith different ideas because theworld of cooking is always chang-ing. What I really like about cook-ing Thai food is that it has a lot oftaste and more importantly, it ishealthy.
What’s your most popular dish?Our most popular dish is our EvilJungle Prince and all of our curries.The evil jungle Prince combines ourfresh basil, coconut milk, and redchili that is served on a bed ofchopped cabbage. You can have thisdish with chicken or even make it avegetarian dish.
Our curries are delicious and full oftaste, and cater to anybody andeverybody. I would tell you about allof them, but it is best for you tocome in and choose your preference.
Is there a dish that you createthat’s not on your menu, butavailable upon request? Our spe-cial dish that is not on the menu isour Crispy Catfish with Basil andChili. Having fish with a little spici-ness is always a good bet, especiallyin Hawaii.
What is the biggest complimentyou’ve ever received as achef/manager/owner? The biggestcompliment I’ve ever received waswhen President Jimmy Carter andhis wife Rosalyn came to eat at our
restaurant. I have to be honest, Itwas a little nerve racking and excit-ing, but the best part is, they lovedit!
If you could serve food to acelebrity, who would it be andwhy? What dish would you serve? If I could serve one person, it wouldbe the King of Thailand becausefirst of all he is the King and sec-ondly he hasn’t left the country in14 years. I would serve him one ofmy curries because the spices andherbs are fresh from our farm and itis one of the best in town. I know hewould enjoy it because in the past,the Prime Minister and thePrincesses of Thailand have eatenmy food and said that it tasted justlike home.

Owner Justin Chun con-ceived the fusion restaurant,located conveniently onKeeaumoku Street, thatintegrates an exciting,upbeat atmosphere fea-turing sparkling redbooths and specialbucket-style chairsfrom Korea with thedining experience,which features menuitems with noticeableKorean influences pairedwith complementary cook-ing and preparation stylesfrom all over the globe.
“In Korea, there are a lot ofrestaurants with this type of atmos-phere,” explains Chun. “Here in Hawaii,there aren’t any Korean fusion restau-rants—they are all traditional. So, I wantedto start a fusion restaurant, and only a fewof the dishes on the menu are traditional.”
Red House recently added a new menuto supplement its current selection offavorites. Customers are invited to try the
BlackPasta and Red Pasta ($12.99 each), whichfeature pasta with a creamy black beansauce and stir-fried meat, and a special RedHouse spicy pasta with a creamy KoreanChili paste sauce, respectively.
“If you look at our BlackPasta, it includes black bean,
which is really popular inKorea and has been for along time,” Chun says.“What we did was make apasta out of it, so it’screamier. It’s not neces-sarily blending specificcultures or influences,but more so mixing indifferent aspects.”
For example, RedHouse offers a pizza that is
composed of crushed ricetopped with cheese and bul-
gogi beef — the ultimate fusionof the Korean marinated beef with
a traditional Italian favorite. The bul-gogi beef also can be found in wraps that
incorporate the tasty meat in a fun fingerfood.
Also appearing on the new menu is aunique take on traditional side dishesoffered at Korean restaurants. Instead ofserving the sides in bowls, Red Houseoffers K-Maki ($9.99 for three selections,

With an inviting dining room that holds up to 130 guests anda reasonable party menu, Canton Seafood is somewhere to keepin mind as you plan your holiday gathering. Smaller parties canrent an enclosed area in the restaurant.

“This is very good,” Gongsays, “and not a lot of otherrestaurants have it.”

Additional specials start from just $5.99.Canton Seafood has a huge menu, so it’s hard to pick just
one dish to order. But other customer favorites are Pork Chopwith Salt and Pepper ($10.99), topped with garlic, onion andbell pepper, and Chicken with Satay Sauce ($12.99), whichis seasoned with sour and spicy flavors.
Canton’s kitchen staff is always thinking up new dishes tofeature. The restaurant offers various specials periodicallyand recently unveiled a new vegetarian menu.
“Right now, people are wanting to eat healthier,” Gong says.“For this menu, we use a lot of tofu, soybeans and vegetables.”

With a large selection of freshseafood available daily, LobsterKing provides diners with the royaltreatment by offering up a king’s
ransom of tasty dishes at affordable prices. Customers have flocked to the eatery located conve-
niently at the corner of South King and Keeaumokustreets to enjoy a wide variety of items, which also areavailable to-go, that satisfy lunch, dinner and late-night cravings.
“We’ve been doing business here for more than twoyears now, and we really appreciate our customers,”says owner June Kim. “We’ve been busy ever sincewe opened. We still have the same low prices and avariety of specials.”
Through November, customers can enjoy a wholelive lobster prepared to their liking for just $9.99.Larger lobsters also are available for $14.95 perpound, and as Kim explains, “We cook it for youjust the way you like it in a variety of spices andseasonings.”
In addition to the more than 170 dishes on themenu, Lobster King also serves up an assortment ofdaily and lunch specials. Kim recommendsJajangmyeon ($8.95 from 11 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and 9
p.m. to 3 a.m.), a large bowl of stir-fried meat and veg-etables with black bean sauce served on a bed of noo-dles and topped with fresh cucumber. As a specialoffer for Dining Out readers, Jajangmyeon is availablefor $6.95 with the coupon found on Page 6.
“The reason why we’re offering some of these newitems is because a lot of local ladies asked me,because I’m Korean and they watch the popularKorean dramas, and they see the black noodle dish onTV and asked me if I would serve it,” Kim says. “I putthis together and it became very, very popular — thecustomers love it. It tastes exactly like what they wereused to eating 30 years ago in Korea.”
Another popular new addition to the menu isSamsun Jjamppong ($10.95 from 11 a.m. to 4:30p.m.), which is a spicy seafood noodle soup that hasalso drawn rave reviews from diners.
“The Jjamppong is for those spicy food lovers. Ithas big chunks of seafood, including scallops, squid,mussels and shrimp, and everybody loves it,” saysKim. “The customers are surprised with how muchseafood we can give them in this one dish for such areasonable price. We’re a seafood wholesaler, so that’swhy we can do that.”
Lobster King also serves up a hearty assortment offresh seafood in Crab Combo ($69.95), a large platter
full of Rock Crab, Dungeness Crab, King Crab legsand Snow Crab. Diners can choose from a wide vari-ety of flavor and spice combinations as well, includ-ing garlic butter, lemon mayonnaise and spicy onionsauce.
“The combo offers really big portions. It’s a greatvalue,” Kim says.
The eatery also boasts a seafood market adjacent tothe restaurant that is open to the public from 7 a.m. to7 p.m., and offers what Kim calls “the best prices intown.” Seafood seekers can choose from a wide vari-ety of fresh, live lobster, crab, abalone, fish, clams andother seasonal selections available at market prices.The items are shipped in two to three times a weekfrom all over the country to guarantee freshness.
Lobster King offers up a full bar, and customers canalso bring their own wine for a corkage fee of $10 pertable. Catering and set party menus also are availablefor special occasions and large groups.
Just in time for the holidays, Lobster King is offer-ing a special on gift certificate purchases. Customerswill receive 10 percent off each gift certificate pur-chased, and Kim encourages diners to make holidaydining reservations in advance as the eatery continuesto gain popularity thanks to loyal eaters who enjoy theroyal treatment.
