Torah Explains the Eminence ArtworkWhen I look at a snowboard I see it as a blank canvas, like I view a mountain. When I started to ride professionally I dreamed of the day I would have my own snowboard to be able to put art on. Being from Australia, growing up learning and studying Aboriginal history and their art, I thought that one day I would like a graphic that included this art form.

Now, many years later, that dream has been made possible by my wonderful family friends. My brother Ben and I went to high school with our friend Isidore Tillers, and my younger sister Abi with Suskia Tillers. It was through these friendships that this opportunity really came about. Isidore and Suskia’s father, Imants Tillers, is a world-renowned artist, and we have always admired his work. It is through this family connection that Imants kindly gave his time and skill to my snowboard—my paintbrush so to speak.

To me this could not have been more perfect! Imants has worked with an Aboriginal artist, Michael Nelson Jagamara, who came together and collaborated on this board graphic. I did not want to give Imants or Michael any direction as to what I wanted to see as a graphic because I respected and loved their art so much and wanted to be surprised and see their interpretation!

When I first viewed the art I was so happy and honored that this day was really here! It was the colors that drew an immediate connection for me. The colors reminded me of home. My interpretation of the lightening symbol is power, energy, strength, spark speed and grace. I see the connection to me as a snowboarder; these are the traits you naturally develop when you’re on the mountain with a snowboard under your feet. This graphic is a special one to me.

Mervin’s G ld-Medal Green P werWelcome to the World’s Most EnvironMENTAL Snowboard Factory!Global warming—it’s winter’s fiercest enemy. With that said, it’s time to ask yourself: are you riding a snowboard, or an environmental hazard? The masterminds at Mervin have over a quarter century of board-making experience and just as much time on the front lines of shredding’s “green” fight. With half their lives spent hand-building snowboards, Mervin co-founders Mike Olson and Pete Saari demand a shop that’s as healthy for the crew and environment as possible. We’ve established the “EnvironMENTAL Division” headed up by Norm Nelson and Mike Olson whose sole mission is to pioneer Mervin’s sustainable practices—whether it’s recycling every possible scrap of manufacturing material, using the safest-possible epoxy resin systems, or heating the factory with 100-percent Lib Tech biodiesel. Nope, our boards aren’t imported from somewhere in Southeast Asia—they’re hand-built in the USA by a snowboarder/surfer/skateboarder labor force. Our manufacturing crew needs a healthy work environment to maximize their shred potential!

1. We Recycle All Our PlasticYou can’t recycle silkscreened base material, so we use sublimation instead and then properly recycle all of our excess base material. We use water-cleansed grinding systems to minimize airborne particulate levels, and our offices have recycle bins for daily plastics, various papers, aluminum, and glass.

2. Size Doesn’t MatterMervin doesn’t waste odd sized wood—we employ our finger joiner to utilize what would normally be throwaway core pieces. These cores are actually stronger at the joint than regular wood, resulting in almost no waste wood and poppy, powerful boards.

5. Drop Beans Not BombsMervin’s ExperiMENTAL Division Leader Mike Olson loves beans! When he’s not eating them, he’s fashioning bio-plastic topsheets out of them. Mervin uses an earth-friendly bio-plastic top skin made from beans that features the highest strength-to-weight ratio of any top sheet in the industry.

3. We Recycle All Our WoodA soil and compost operation is conveniently located right next door to Mervin, which is where all our scrap wood ends up so it can be recycled as soil additive. We foster Fast-Growing Farmed Wood; for years, Mervin has devotedly used renewable, fast-growing forest products for our cores! Locally sourced when possible.

6. Safe, Clean, HealthyWe use the safest possible epoxy resin systems with minimal VOCs (volatile organic compounds), as well as soy-based elastomer on our sidewalls instead of toxic ABS. And forget harmful solvents—we clean house with citrus-based solvents instead!

4. Lib Tech BiodieselMike and Norm run a Lib Tech biodiesel co-op with a filling station next to the factory. This fuel heats our factory and runs many employees’ cars, as well as those of neighboring locals. Plus, the factory’s electricity is “green” power specially contracted from the local PUD (Public Utility District).

7. Down with Toxic Lacquer Clear CoatsMervin sublimates graphics (with water based inks) which eliminates the need for the cancer-causing, toxic automotive-lacquer gloss coats you see on many shiny snowboard top sheets.

Pickle Tech, PTX new!BALANCE THROUGH ASYMMETRY Our bodies are asymmetrical, why shouldn’t our boards be? Picture yourself in a toe side turn. You can keep your weight centered by using your toes, and changing the angles of your knees and ankles. Your heels don’t have this dexterity, so you lean back and the tendency is to stick your butt out on a heelside turn, putting your weight off center. Pickle Tech compensates for our body mechanics. It has a deeper sidecut on the heel edge, allowing the board to engage sooner and turn easier. One third of the core closest to the heel edge is Columbian Gold, softer (and lighter) wood for smooth transitions and a balanced feel. The only difference you’ll notice is that snowboarding feels easier! Asymmetry is not new to snowboarding, but with Pickle it’s being perfected! Balance through asymmetry, whether riding forward or switch, is smoother, easier, and a lot of fun.

EC2 BTX new!

The best of two worlds come together with EC2. We started with (BTX) Banana (reverse camber) between the bindings, added Elliptical camber on the tip and tail, and mixed in the magic ingredient, Magnetraction (serrated edges). Banana adds more pop and keeps you up off your edges for quick edge-to-edge transfer. Elliptical camber is sloped like angel wings (not radial), providing just the right amount of camber for grip and flow. It’s the ultimate blend for all mountain riding.

Magnetraction, MTXThe ‘Traction’ in Banana TractionGet a grip with the edge hold and control that you deserve. MAGNETRACTION works like a bread knife, cutting more efficiently than a straight edge because of the serration. Apply this idea to the snow. The wavy MAGNETRACTION edges enable the board to grip and hold better in all conditions. Get next level confidence and agility on ice and hard pack, as well as any situation where you need to trust your edges— icy slopes, cat tracks, traverses, superpipe walls, kicker runways, and early morning crust. Proving itself year after year in magazine board tests, Patented BANANA TRACTION Technology replaces camber with reverse camber between the feet, and flat, or no camber from the feet out. The board’s rockered mid section is a natural turning arc that flattens out under the rider’s weight, providing full nose-to-tail edge contact.
