HuntonBrady Architects Orlando, Florida, 2006 – 2010 Project Manager

• University of Florida Biomedical Sciences Building (BMSB); Gainesville, Florida Project Manager

for $72 million, 160,000 square-foot BSL2 laboratory which includes approximately 85,000 net

assigned square feet to house the research and administrative operation of the biomedical

engineering, sciences and animal resources. Connected to three existing buildings enabled UF

researchers to connect to the Health Sciences campus. Building originally targeted for Silver LEED

Certification has now achieved enough points for Gold Certification.

• Florida Hospital Heartland Cath Lab Renovation; Sebring, Florida Project Manager for $1.2 million, 1,000 square-foot

Catheterization laboratory replacing existing equipment and updating finishes. Despite the complexity of the project, it received

minimal AHCA comments both during design and construction phases of the project.

• Florida Hospital Deland OB Suite Renovation; Deland, Florida Project Manager for 40,000 square

foot hospital renovation to the existing Obstetrics floor of the hospital, which has not been

updated since the 1980’s. Created labor-delivery-recovery (LDR) as well as post-partum suites and

incorporated new technology into the new suite making it a state-of-the art facility. Created a spa-

like environment making the birthing experience more pleasant for families, and also increased

patient volume for the hospital.

• Palmer College of Chiropractic Laboratory of Cell and Molecular Biology; Port Orange, Florida

Project Manager of the design and construction of a 2,000 square-foot tissue culture laboratory for the college. Included

creation of equipment specifications manual used to manage the large variety of instrumentation of this unique facility.

• Florida Hospital Celebration Patient Tower Addition LEED Management; Celebration, Florida Project Manager to coordinate

LEED design principles into a new 250,000 square foot addition. Reviewed construction documents and ensured that

sustainable design principles were incorporated. Mentored consultants and in-house staff who were unfamiliar with

sustainable design principles.

• UCF Pegasus Health Clinic; Orlando, Florida Assisted the University of Central Florida with the development of a new 22,000

medical clinic in eastern Orange County. Advised on current code requirements, reviewed proposed facilities and facilitated

schematic design charrette on final building selected.

• Health First Cape Canaveral Hospital Pharmacy Compounding Renovation; Cocoa Beach, Florida

Upgraded existing pharmacy compounding lab to current USP-797 pharmaceutical design

standards by incorporating a Class III Biosafety cabinet and upgraded existing cabinetry.

• Health First Holmes Regional Medical Center; Melbourne, Florida Renovated an 800 square foot

office area to bring a compounding pharmacy to current USP-797 pharmaceutical design standards.

• UCF Pathology Laboratory Study; Orlando, Florida Feasibility Study on the use of a 2,000 square

foot temporary pathology laboratory in the Student Services Center for clinical analysis and

research.

• Tampa General Hospital Clinical Laboratory Master Plan; Tampa, Florida Determined the feasibility of relocating an existing

25,000 SF hospital laboratory to a partially vacant building ¼ mile away. Reviewed existing facility conditions, identified

laboratory for the new Learning Resource Center. Coordinated with college staff to develop a design that would compliment the

• Florida Hospital Memorial Oceanside; Ormond Beach, Florida Designed clinical laboratory to bring it to current CLIA codes and

wrote specifications for project.

• Florida Hospital Heartland Wauchula Exterior Renovation Study; Wauchula, Florida Project Manager for the exterior upgrades

to a 40 year old hospital in rural Florida. Managed design team in developing various design options and wrote outline

specifications for final feasibility report to be used for cost estimation and presentation to Executive Committee for approval.

BRPH Companies Melbourne, Florida, 2005 – 2006 Project Architect

• Lee County School District Challenger and Orange River Middle Schools; Cape Coral and Fort

Myers, Florida Project Architect for two prototype 160,000 square-foot middle schools with a 1300

student capacity. The middle school is part of a larger elementary and middle school campus and is

composed of three buildings – Classrooms with Dining Hall, Gymnasium and Mechanical Building.

• Kennedy Space Center Central Canopy Plaza, Phases I and II; Cape Canaveral, Florida Project

Architect for a renovation of the main plaza at the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex.

• Henderson Development Corporation Melbourne Office Complex Proposal; Melbourne, Florida

Project Architect for three identical 150,000 square-foot office buildings located near the Melbourne Airport. Proposal includes

schematic design, narrative and cut sheet preparation.

• Sarasota “H” Elementary School Persons with Special Needs Shelter; Sarasota, Florida Designed revisions to project currently

under construction to allow the school to be designated as a Persons with Special Needs Shelter for Sarasota County. Included

the design and research of implementing an oxygen distribution system during emergency situations.

• City of Palm Bay Fire & Police Station Prototype; Palm Bay, Florida Designed prototype 50,000 square-foot combination 20

person fire and police station with two-truck apparatus bay for 5 potential locations throughout Palm Bay. Used prototype as a

basis for a larger 45-person station with four-truck apparatus bay for a new central location for the growing community.

Flad & Associates Madison, Wisconsin, 2003 – 2005 Project Architect/Laboratory Planner

• Johnson & Johnson/Centocor Springhouse Lab Project; Springhouse, Pennsylvania Laboratory

Planner for the programming phase of a 60,000-square-foot addition and renovation of 80,000-

square-foot vivarium. The vivarium includes housing for rodents, primates, and canines with

procedure and surgical work areas, and necropsy. The addition and renovation of the existing

vivarium was needed due to the merging of two groups on the Springhouse campus.

• Chiron Corporation; Emeryville, California Laboratory Planner for a 285,000 square foot facility

designed to accommodate varied laboratory types including microbiology, biochemistry, chemistry,

bioorganic/biophysics, robotics and support space including tissue culture, NMR and isotope labs.

• Confidential Pharmaceutical Client; Michigan Project architect and planner for an 11,000-square-foot upfit and renovation of

an existing multi-story building for pharmacological discovery research needs. The project includes non-ventilated rodent racks

and cages and pens for canine and swine. Also includes telemetry suites and support spaces. The design team worked closely

with users of both areas to incorporate state-of-the-art technology.

• Confidential Pharmaceutical Client; Michigan Project architect and planner for 12,500 square feet of

Drug Dosage and Formulations including dry blending of active pharmaceutical ingredients (API) with

rodent feed and liquid solutions preparation for oral suspensions and parenterals. The suite includes

four blending rooms with two medium size bin blenders and three solution prep spaces with 10-foot

chemical hoods. Each of the seven project rooms includes a custom 6-foot ventilated balance

enclosure to meet strict exposure limits to the API.

• University of Chicago/Argonne National Laboratory; Chicago, Illinois Vivarium planner for the

Howard T. Ricketts Center which is proposed to be constructed by the University of Chicago and will

be located on the Argonne National Laboratory Campus. This 56,000-square-foot building will contain safety-certified, state-of-

the-art laboratories and will meet federal guidelines for design and operation of BSL-3 biocontainment facilities. As a regional

center of excellence for biodefense and emerging infectious diseases, the facility will enhance the nation’s ability to find cures

for diseases and fight bioterrorism.

• Nanosphere, Inc.; Northbrook, Illinois Project architect for a 33,000 square foot renovation of an existing tenant space for their

rapidly expanding life sciences business. The project utilized a design-build approach expediting occupancy. The project

includes office, research and analytical laboratories, and cGMP-manufacturing facilities for medical

• Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine Bunting-Blaustein Cancer Research Building;

Baltimore, Maryland Project architect for a twelve-story, 230,000 square foot biomedical research facility to

house cancer research laboratories. Facility designed with six lab floors utilizing interstitial floors to allow for

utility distribution. Responsible for maintaining the project web site, which was instrumental for the

Jennifer’s experience has focused in the design and construction of Science, Healthcare and

Technology educational facilities. Throughout her career, she has had the pleasure of de-

signing and building teaching laboratories with many various educational institutions both in

K-12 and Higher Education. As the Laboratory Architect, she is involved with all phases of

the project from programming through construction documentation to construction to en-

sure that the teaching laboratory not only meets educational requirements but ensures

Challenger Middle School—BRPH Architects & Engineers

Cape Coral, Florida

Project Architect of a 160,000 square foot three-story middle school prototype designed to

accommodate more than 1,300 students on a small site. Classroom arrangements are de-

signed to house each grade per floor to minimize student distractions and minimize move-

ment between floors. Each floor has a science laboratory designed to provide flexible learn-

ing arrangements to conduct a wide variety of teaching methodologies. Student desks are

flexible while sinks and gas stations are placed along the perimeter to remove sight interfer-

The Florida Hospital Heartland Heart and Vascular Center

opened in March 2009 to allow residents in Highlands

and Hardee Counties in rural South-Central Florida to ob-

tain emergency heart services. After an initial Cath Lab

was built, it was determined that a second Cath Lab was

needed to serve the community’s need for heart care.

This encouraged the hospital to obtain a Philips Allura

biplane cardiovascular x-ray machine to perform quick

and accurate analysis of incoming patients.

To accommodate for this new equipment, extensive re-

view of the existing conditions of the hospital was

needed to ensure that the facility could house the utility-

intensive item, including wall lead-lining, structural sup-

port, electrical loads, finish upgrades and data support.

Upgrades to finishes and the retrofit of an non-functional

bathroom into a central equipment supply room made

the new Cath Lab a state-of-the-art facility.

Since the renovations occurred within the hospital, phas-

ing and consideration of an adjacent fully functional Cath

Lab needed to be taken into account to ensure that the

hospital and its adjacent Cath Lab can remain operational

throughout the construction process, as well as meeting

ACHA requirements.

OB Suite Renovation

Role: Project Manager & Project Architect

Originally built in 1962, the hospital established itself as

the leader in medical care in the rural community of De-

Land, Florida. Many essential upgrades were needed to

be done to keep the hospital current with the latest

treatment techniques. One area that needed improve-

ment was the Obstetrics suite located on the third floor.

The area had not been upgraded since the mid 1980’s

and nursing stations were two completely enclosed and

isolated stations that impeded patient care.

Due to the complexity of the design and the construction

phasing, BIM models were created to allow the hospital

staff to decide which design features and phasing would

best serve the hospital. In order to minimize costs, it was

decided that the two nurses stations were to remain in

their current locations; however, the walls that sepa-

rated them were removed to allow for clear observations

along both corridors. Finishes were upgraded, code viola-

tions were corrected and the suite was brought to meet

current ACHA design guidelines making for a more effi-

cient and pleasant environment for staff, patients and

As a continuation of the UCF College of Medicine’s goal of

making healthcare accessible to students and to the UCF

community, they renovated an empty 22,000 square foot

outpatient clinic into the new Pegasus Health Clinic. This

clinic has a focus on primary care, including internal

medicine, family practice and geriatric medicine with an

emphasis on prevention, wellness and care management,

with clinical and the ability to expand into additional spe-

cialties to meet community needs. During the Program-

ming Phase, I advised on current code requirements, re-

viewed proposed facilities for purchase and facilitated

the schematic design charrette on the final building se-

lected for renovation.

The renovation utilized the existing floor plan of the

empty and outdated clinic and incorporated the latest

innovations in health care practices technology and to

turn it into a state-of-the art facility. The computers run

on wireless Internet, and medical publications and books

and patient’s medical records are electronic to cut down

on the use of paper can all be accessed remotely and on-

site. On-site CLIA/CAP-accredited lab, including advanced

molecular testing, and pharmaceutical and radiology ser-

vices begin a continuum of services convenient for pa-

tients.

The Biomedical Sciences Building (BMSB) is designed to

be 165,000 gross square feet, providing approximately

91,000 net square feet to house research, administrative

operation and animal care resources of the biomedical

engineering sciences program as part of an NIH and

HHMI grant. The physical and cultural integration of the

research programs within the facility provides a collabo-

rative environment that continues to establish the Uni-

versity of Florida as a leader in interdisciplinary biomedi-

cal science, engineering, technology, translational re-

search and transfer.

The BMSB is strategically located in close proximity to the

other inter-related science departments fostering a mul-

tidisciplinary and collaborative atmosphere among the

sciences. The majority of the building incorporates modu-

lar laboratory space consistent with UF’s need for flexibil-

ity. Philosophically, the open laboratory concept is em-

braced to form the intellectual comingling of multidisci-

plinary researchers, students and staff.

As part of the front door to the Johns Hopkins Medical

Institution campus near Downtown Baltimore, MD, this

facility houses state-of-the-art medical research laborato-

ries and support areas dedicated to the full spectrum of

Oncology research, consolidating the various groups

originally scattered throughout the campus. The organi-

zation of the building is designed with six lab floors utiliz-

ing interstitial floors to allow for utility distribution and

12 office floors which takes advantage of the higher floor-

to-floor span created by the interstitial space.

In addition to the primary laboratory and office areas,

considerable shared resource labs are provided in the

center module including a 6,000 SF animal facility, bio-

lab, glass wash, irradiators, BSL-3 laboratory, cGMP Suite

and other supporting laboratory services.

In addition to Project Architecture responsibilities, I was

responsible for maintaining the project web site, which

was instrumental for the communication of the project

among the project team and researchers moving into the

The overall goal of the Johns Hopkins Cancer Center is to

provide total comprehensive care for all Oncology pa-

tients. As a National Cancer Institute Comprehensive

Cancer Care Center, the University was one of the first in

the world to centralize all of its cancer research and

treatment into one general area to shorten the amount

of time leading research and new therapy would be made

available to patients.

As a response to this Initiative, Johns Hopkins University

decided to revise the program of the Bunting-Blaustein

Cancer Research Building to include a current Good

Manufacturing Practice (cGMP) Suite while the building

was in the Construction Document Phase as an Add-

Service. The Suite is comprised of three individual Class

10,000 laboratories connected with a common Class

100,000 corridor and Ante Room with separate Gown-In/

Gown-Out zones to ensure that the Suite meets all FDA

requirements. Separate autoclaving and equipment

zones were provided to minimize excessive air movement

within the Suite and provided pass-thrus to adjacent non-

Medical Center’s Rehabilitation Institute of Michigan lo-

cated near the heart of Downtown Detroit. The complex

provides space for research and teaching laboratories,

classrooms, auditorium, office and administrative space,

animal facilities, and inpatient and outpatient services.

Also features two NMR suites (300 and 500 megahertz,

respectively), located in the lower level, underground.

The building is divided into three lower teaching levels

and three upper laboratory and animal facility levels. Of-

fices are arranged separately from the labs to allow after-

hour security and increased lab modularity/flexibility to

accommodate a wide variety of programs used by the

College. On the lower levels, the teaching levels are ar-

ranged around a central atrium which encourages stu-

dent interaction and flexible study spaces.

Laboratory blocks are organized around a series of utility

chases vertically stacked to provide efficient routing of all

mechanical and electrical systems to the penthouse and

the mechanical rooms located within the basement.

Programmer/planner for a 120,000 gross square foot

physics science building. This four-story building is lo-

cated on the new FDA campus in White Oak, Maryland

will study the effects of devices on the human body. Re-

search laboratory types include laser labs, anechoic

chamber, electromagnetic field lab, computer sciences

lab, electron microscope lab, mechanics and materials

lab, and radiology lab.

This facility consolidated numerous FDA engineering and

physics laboratories that were located throughout the

Metropolitan Washington DC area as a phase of the

White Oak Consolidation Project. Early on in the design

process it was evident that this laboratory could not fol-

low traditional laboratory planning modules due to the

nature of the technology used with the lab types as noted

above. Extensive blocking and stacking as well as adja-

cency analysis of the physical characteristics of each labo-

ratory type was conducted to determine the overall con-

figuration of the space and to avoid operational conflicts;

laboratories which allowed access to daylight was located

separately from those which were light sensitive. Labs

which had either vibration sensitivity or radiation shield-

ing requirements were located on lower floors away from

general circulation corridors than those which had less

stringent requirements.
