Greetings All: Wow it’s 2018 al-ready. What hap-pened to 2017? Hopefully everyone was able to come out and enjoy your Lodge this past year. Well with the onset of a new year, it’s a great time for new begin-nings. As we turn

the page on the calendar we can look forward to what 2018 may bring. Lets see if we can continue the positive momentum that we had in 2017 and grow our Lodge not only in membership but also in usage, such as having dinner on a Friday night at least once a month. It would make a big difference to our bottom line if we were all to do this. I would like to think, although I might be a little prejudice, that 2017 was a successful year for our Lodge with our membership and revenue gain. As ev-eryone knows, the Queen of Hearts has ended and it has turned out to be a big success and as always we are looking for ideas for the next event. So if you are sitting there with an idea for our Lodge and don’t know where to go with it, contact any officer. We are listed on the back page of the Expositor. We will point you in the right direction, so don’t be shy. Speaking of officers, February is officer nomination/election month. If you are at all interested in being a part of the inner workings of your Lodge – become an officer. February is the month to be nominated for a position. Feel free to contact me if you have any interest. This month is one of my shorter news-letter messages. I thought I would try not to bore you too much. I will save that for next month. Happy New Year! Be safe and I will see you at the Lodge.

Tribute to a long-time Elks member and friend We graduated as classmates from PHHS in 1961 and were friends for a ton of years. He loved the Port Huron Elks Lodge with all his heart and gave a lot of time and attention to its blossoming throughout the years. He was a part of the many projects to raise money to make major improvements and he loved being there amongst the membership. He held many officer positions as well as being the Exalted Ruler 1977-1978. He was a member for 48 years. Mike Innes was truly the definition of Elkdom...Elks Care, Elks Share. Michael passed away on November 20, 2017. He will be sadly missed by many Elks members for they remember all the things he has done in past years. Rest in peace my friend.

Jan Wyllie, Expositor Editor

Set one Elks goal for 2018MALCOLM J. McPHERSON JR., Grand Exalted Ruler The new year brings an opportunity to start fresh. We make resolutions to stop procrastinating, eat healthier, exercise more, act nicer to others, and so on. Yet many of us set unachievable expectations and are left wondering why we abandon our resolutions by February. Let’s resolve to get rid of resolutions this year and in-stead set goals that we can realistically attain. I challenge you to choose just one actionable goal that you can execute this calendar year within your Lodge, community, or the greater Order. Here are some ideas to get you started: • Share your pride in being an Elk by recruiting and installing a new member. • Volunteer to chair a committee or event within your Lodge. • Run for an officer position within your Lodge this coming March. • Seek out a new charitable initiative for your Lodge to support in your community. • Master the Elks ritual process and help strengthen your Lodge’s ritual performance. I hope these ideas spark a desire to make a difference in your community and work together with fellow members. If we give ourselves realistic goals, then we’re more likely to stick to them and ultimately become a stronger Lodge. As Pat and I get back on the road again this month, another one of my goals for the remaining year is to promote our 150 years of Elkdom. As we get closer to our annual reunion in July in San Antonio, Texas, I challenge each of you to bring your great works of Elkdom into your local communities. I look forward to hearing about the ways you are strengthening Elkdom as we continue this journey together.

VAVS remains the core of Elks’ veterans programsBy PAUL D. HELSELPGER and Member ENVSC It is a proud time for our Order with our 150th Anniversary on February 16. That pride comes from what we are do-ing today in service in our Lodge com-munities across this great nation. The Elks National Veterans Service Commission has been the centerpiece of that service officially since 1946; how-ever, our service work for veterans and the military dates back to World War I. Our work to fulfill our pledge to never forget our nation’s veterans has contin-ued to grow over the years and today encompasses not only our Elks VA Vol-untary Service program, but also pro-grams such as Army of Hope, Freedom Grants, Veterans Leather, Adopt-A-Vet, and the recently established Wel-come Home program. While our service to our veterans and military has expanded over the years, the Elks VAVS program continues to be the cornerstone of our veterans service activities. This program, commonly re-ferred to today as the Elks Voluntary Service program, includes Elks volun-teers serving in non-VA facilities such as USO facilities, Fisher Houses, tran-sitional homes, rehabilitation facilities, Vet Centers, and other community-based facilities servicing veterans and the recently separated military, includ-ing initiatives and facilities for home-less vets. Today our Elks Voluntary Service program has about 340 Elks Repre-sentatives and about 260 Elks Deputy Representatives as well as an army of volunteers generally servicing 153 VA Medical Centers, 115 State Veterans Facilities, 37 Community Vets Centers, nine USOs, and two Fisher Houses, plus a growing number of community-based non-VA facilities. Servicing non-VA facilities is steadily gaining momentum. As general com-munity awareness and interest grows relative to the plight of our veterans to-day, many more opportunities will arise where the assistance of our Elks Volun-tary Service program are needed. We certainly must continue our traditional veterans service work in the traditional VA Facilities. However, there are far too many veterans not in traditional VA Facilities who need our help. State As-sociations, Local Lodges and Elks Mem-bers must think creatively and reach out to non-traditional, non-VA entities in their communities that locate and help veterans with various life chal-lenges. In this effort the Elks can help more vets gain or sustain a normal or near normal life than in anything else we do.

Funding scholarships, building relationships The Legacy Awards scholarship helps recipients fund their dreams and encour-ages students to learn more about the Foundation. Kate Clark received a 2017 Legacy Award, a $4,000 scholarship for children and grandchildren of Elks members. Although her father has been a member of the Elks for years, Clark didn’t quite grasp the magnitude of the work Elks do for their communities, the country, and students like her. “Not only has the scholarship helped me finance my education, but it gave me the opportunity to get to know my local Elks Lodge better,” Clark said. Clark started working with Lori Clark, the Exalted Ruler of Encinitas, Calif., Lodge No. 2243, last summer. Now she writes press releases and works on events at the Lodge, which allows her to relive the memories she made at the Lodge when she was younger. “My favorite memory is when the entire Lodge was decked out like a life-sized version of Candy Land,” Kate Clark said. “All the neighborhood kids walked through the Lodge and were greeted by the Elks members dressed as different characters from the game.” Clark says she feels like she is “part of a great organization” by working with her Lodge. She is currently in the Honors Program at the University of California, Irvine, majoring in International Studies. The 2018 Legacy Awards application is due online on February 2. The ENF will offer a total of 300 awards in 2018, an increase of 50 awards from last year. Appli-cants must be seniors in high school. For full rules, go to www.elks.org/scholars/scholarships/Legacy.cfm

Port Huron Elks Lodge Officer Paul Torres delivered the Eulogy for our depart-ed members from the past year at a Memorial Service held on Sunday, December 3rd at the Lodge. It was written by Ray A. Engelland, P.D.D.G.E.R. in 2002.

Elks Annual Memorial Service held December 3rd

Ladies, Guests, my Brothers and Sisters of Elk-dom, my Friends, this Service is an extension of the established customs of our Fraternity, in keeping with one of our most solemn Pledges: That living or dead, an Elk is never forgotten, never forsaken. We are a very social group. However, when the Hour of Eleven is upon us, we pause from our social functions to pay reverent respect to our Ab-sent Members. As Elks, we do not take this token of recollection lightly. We, likewise, congregate on the first Sunday of December within our Lodge rooms to recall with tender reverence the lives of our deceased Comrades who have stood the tests of time, and to eulogize those who have left us dur-ing the past year. The Elks are not a religious Fraternity. How-ever, each time we gather we begin our Session by asking God’s Blessing on the work we are about to perform, and we close by asking safekeeping and Benediction. This part of our deliberations is a constant reminder that we are, after all, a product of our Creator. This day, as we remember, we are reminded that in life there are no survivors, and that each of us must face the reality that our days are also numbered. So this is one of those times in our Fraternal life that “The Great Heart of Elkdom Truly Swells and Throbs.” For this is when we bow our heads in tender reverence and silent tribute to those who have left our midst in all the past years, and especially we are reminded of those who have answered the call during the last twelve months. It is easy for us to remember with great feelings toward each of them, as they were all our friends and acquaintances. These friends live more than ever within our recollection. Only their lives with us are gone. It is true that we miss a familiar voice and the grasp of a friendly hand. These voices and the assistance of those hands are gone, but the echoes of those voices and the efforts of those hands will be with us forever. Let us be reminded that they carried with them some great tools of life, not because they are the Principles and the Sym-bols of our Fraternity, but because they are the Principles and Symbols of our culture and a part of our heritage. The Holy Bible is an Emblem of true Faith and Justice. The Flag of our Country is a Symbol of Pa-triotism. The Star of Fidelity is a Symbol of Dedica-tion and Obligation to lofty Principles. And always working under the “Antlers of Protection” afforded by their Fellow Elks. Not only did they live by these tools of life, they also worked on behalf of them. In death, they have discovered all of the Truths of the Principles of what they stood for in life. That Charity spurs us all to help those less fortu-nate than ourselves. That Justice of our Duty to our fellowman. That Brotherly Love makes every Member their Brother’s keeper. That Fidelity which gives us faith not in ourselves but a deeper, more reverent faith which truly pass-es all human understanding. It is easy for us to talk about our friends and perhaps even easier to talk about our Principles. However, unless we use, practice and learn from the lessons learned by our departed Family, we will have wasted our time here today. Let us believe

that they are watching over us. Let us believe that they approve of our actions. Let us perform so that they would approve. Let us leave here with the resolve that we will be strengthened by their memory. Let us at every turn in the pathway of life recall all of the pleasantness which has accompa-nied their lives. Let us rededicate ourselves to live by the Prin-ciples they lived by, so amply expressed by the poet John Hall in his writing entitled “At Days End” You may have heard it before but it conveys a phi-losophy of life that we all can aspire to live by. It goes like this:“Is anybody happier because you passed their way? Does anyone remember that you spoke to them today? The day is almost over, and its toil-ing time is through. Is there anyone to utter now a kindly word to you? Can you say tonight, in parting with the day that is slipping fast, That you helped a single Brother or Sister of the many that you passed? Is a single heart rejoicing over what you did or said? Does the man or woman whose hopes were fading now with courage look ahead? Are those who sought your friendship glad you came or went? Did you leave a trail of kindness or a scar of discontent? As you close your eyes to slumber, do you think that our God will say, ‘You have earned one more tomorrow by the work you did today.’” Yes, my friends, at any time we memorialize there is a certain amount of sadness. This we can-not and should not deny. I would encourage you to wear that sorrow as a Badge of Respect. But as we honor those who left us with a lighted candle, a fragrant flower, a silent tear, or a simple pleas-ant memory, let us be reassured that each of their days were blessed because they answered the call to serve their fellowman. Let us rededicate ourselves, in at least a small way, to live our lives so that we can earn one more tomorrow by the work we do today. The sun of the lives of some of our Members has sunk heedlessly in the west and they have rested from their labors, but their memories live on. And we can assure them that, as Elks, that they may rest in peace for they have not been forgotten or forsaken.

If the Queen of Hearts is not drawn until by week #52, they will draw until she is found or the money runs out (whichever is first)!Queen of Hearts Committee: Jim Feher, ER Steve Peters & PER Bob Fritch
