CWDers #12 Sportobsession

After spending the past year innovating and achieving, most people wouldconsider it time for a rest. So why don’t we ? Firstly, because hyperactivepeople never actually stop – as evidenced by the new design forour Dynamick® range, more streamline and close contact than ever before.Secondly because research won’t wait, so with the official launchof the CWDVetLab, we’ve got to double our efforts rather than slacken them. And lastly, because innovations like the iJump continue making inroads. So instead of catching our breath, we’ve decided to spend 2018 giving breathto others, inspiring them. In our case through enjoyment and connectivity,as you’ll soon discover with our new publicity campaign connection !Connection with our horses to whom we owe so much. Connection withour feelings induced by sharing, both small conquests and major victories. And connection in the digital sense – as elusive and vital as all thesemoments of great sport that give us so much enjoyment.

2018,

a great year for victories

2017 has been a full-on and thoroughly rewarding year, crowned with a wealth of achievements. Two riders, however, can justly pride themselves on prevailing :Cian O’Connor and Harrie Smolders. The Irish riderexcelled all winter in Florida prior to carrying off theEuropean Championships in Gothenburg with his team inAugust. Not one to do things by halves, Cian also won theBronze medal for his individual performance. As for Harrie Smolders, he shone equally brightlythroughout the year, clocking up Silver at the EuropeanChampionships as well as Team Gold in the Nations CupFinal in Barcelona with his fellow orange-jacketedcountrymen. He then went on to win the Longines GlobalChampions Tour without even competing in the Final ! Hearwhat both champions have to say about their exploits, amidtheir dizzying rounds of competitions, training sessions andeveryday life.

Simon Knops : What a year Harrie ! What was the highlight ofthis past season – the European Championships in Gothenburgperhaps ?Harrie Smolders : There have been several I think… the EuropeanChampionships, my victory in the Global Champions Tour, winning the Nations Cup Final…

S.K. : What was your state of mind back in January and yourgoals for the season ?H.S. : I was looking forward to it ! I didn’t really have specific goals.I knew I would be participating in the Global Champions Leaguewith the Hamburg Diamonds, because my owners wanted me todo so. So that was actually the goal with which we started, andthen about half way through the season, when I took the lead, individually, I gave it increasing priority. At that point, I had to sitdown with my owners and decide whether we were going for theEuropean Championships or not. Then I had to do a few NationsCup qualifiers: Rotterdam, Aachen and Hickstead. A few weekslater, we won the silver medal at the Europeans, so that wasfantastic for us because all our hard work paid off.

S.K. : What were your expectations for Gothenburg ?H.S. : I was very hopeful. It’s a wonderful competition, verywell-organised, and I knew I had a horse that was ready for theChampionships, so I was determined to put my stamp on thisone. But after the first day, it didn’t really look like that was goingto happen as we were in 31st position ! However, I still had a verygood feeling, because my horse jumped fantastically and if I hadto do it again, I would do exactly the same.

S.K. : And then you ended second. Was that the highest that youcould expect or do you think you missed your target ?H.S. : No, I never had Gold in my sights. The only thing that wasfrustrating was that I was more than 4 points away from PederFredericson. From Day One, I knew that he was going to be veryhard to catch. I never had the feeling that Gold was in my reach, but I also knew after that first day that if I did four clear rounds,I would end up on the podium. So that kept me motivated.

S.K. : And now you’ve won the Longines Global Champions Toureven before competing in the final… How did you feel in Rome, the penultimate leg of the circuit: nervous or confident ?H.S. : No, I wasn’t really nervous. The top six riders were still ontarget for winning the title so I thought the decision would bemade in Doha. But then the show turned out to be unbelievable,

like the whole season actually, with numbers 2, 3 and 4 failingto qualify for the Grand Prix. For my part, I had to finish in thetop three, so everything was alright for me.

S.K. : Don VHP Z and Emerald N.O.P. are your two top horses. How do you keep them in shape for the whole season ?H.S. : Well they both had two months off this winter, and I didn’tcompete in the World Cup Final. I tried to prepare them reallywell during the winter. Don only did ten shows this seasonwhich is not a huge number, and I think that paid off. He’s stillfresh physically and mentally.

S.K. : Don was always been a good horse, but not the championhe is now. Today, he’s one of the top horses in the world. Whatmade the difference ?H.S. : We’ve known each other for a long time, and weunderstand one another better and better. The first year, Iasked a lot of him so that he could get used to the rhythm. Nowhe has more experience, and we know each other very well. Ithink that’s what makes the difference in the ring.

S.K. : How do you organise your show-planning ?H.S. : It’s hard. Sometimes, perhaps, you have certain goals forthe next few months, but you always need to consider whatshape each horse is in at any given moment. The horses will tellyou where they want to go, and you have to be able to sensethat.

S.K. : What is your best memory of 2017 ?H.S. : I can’t say, because 2017 is not finished yet ! (laughs) We’vehad lot of fantastic moments but if I had to retain just onevictory, it would be the Global Champions title.

S.K. : What is your 2018 goal ?H.S. : I haven’t really made goals yet. I want to do everything, butyou have to make choices. Of course we’d like to go to the WorldCup Finals, and to the World Equestrian Games in Tryon, but itall depends on how our horses are.

S.K. : Is the #1 position in the World Rankings a goal for you ?H.S. : No, not really, because like I said we always think aboutthe horses first. If a horse is in good shape, then the results willfollow by themselves. But if you start to chase points, you’llnever get there. We always work from the horses’ point of view, not the other way round.

S.K. : What is your greatest strength ?H.S. : I hope I have more than one ! (laughs) When you want toget to the top, you need lots of skills, not just one. You also needto have the right people around you. This year is the result ofall the hard work from the past 15 years, of getting the rightpeople around me, from blacksmiths to people who are goodat managing… the right grooms, the right owners… As a rider,it’s important to know how to resolve problems and moveforward – that’s how you develop and improve.

S.K. : Do you have a weakness ?H.S. : For sure, lots, but I try to make them invisible !

S.K. : Do you have a fear ?H.S. : Fear doesn’t really feature in my vocabulary.

S.K. : Do you have a hidden talent ?H.S. : Not that I know ! (laughs)

S.K. : If the young Harrie could give advice to today’s Harrie, what would he say ?H.S. : Do it the same way !

S.K. : If you hadn’t become a show jumper, what would you havedone ?H.S. : I don’t know. At school I liked economics and numbers andthat kind of thing, so I think it would have been something likethat. Or something in sport, as I like to follow all sports. So itwould be one of those two I think.

S.K. : Who inspires you today, and why ?H.S. : I think great sportspeople inspire me; not only theirachievements but also their personalities when they don’t win. I thinkthat makes them even greater sportsmen than they already are.Federer, Usain Bolt and those people… look at their attitude whenthey don’t win: they know exactly why and are aware of where it wentwrong. That’s why they never panic. They can also admire otherpeople when they are better than themselves at that moment.

Andy Chansel  : You qualified for the European Championshipswith Good Luck. Can you tell us a bit more about this horse andwhere he comes from ?Cian O’Connor : Good Luck is what we call the horse of alifetime. He’s very special to me. When I found him, in Novem-ber 2004, he was only eight. I was looking for a top top horseand my friend Abdel Saïd told me  : “You’ve got to come and trythis horse, he’s really something else…”

A.C : What were your impressions the first time you rode him ?C.O’C. : As soon as I saw him and rode him, I was in love withhim. His explosive jump, his power. It’s taken time to train him, especially in his flatwork, and to get control between the fences. He was always a good jumper but he was difficult to ride. And Ithink probably the Europeans is one of the best he has everjumped. He was so rideable and smooth, and able to go fast thevery first day.

A.C : Was his success at this top level a revelation for you ?C.O’C. : I don’t think anything happens by chance. We planned itreally hard. You also need a little bit of luck. And to be so closeto two Golds was incredible. Attaining this level with Good Luckwas something we made a goal and a priority for the year. When you have a horse like this, you know you always have achance if you make a good plan and ride well.

A.C : How did you prepare for these championships, with whichshows ?C.O’C. : Well we didn’t really do that many shows. Good Luck had abreak in April and May because I was injured myself, and in June andJuly he was great, jumping the Grand Prix at Wiesbaden where hecame 4th, then the Grand Prix in Sopot where he won, then the GrandPrix in Rotterdam where he was 2nd, and the Grand Prix in Aachenwhere he was 10th. Then he went to Dublin and was double clear inthe Nations Cup, followed by Gold and Bronze in the Europeans !

A.C : Is Good Luck a horse that needs to jump a lot ?C.O’C. : Not really. He doesn’t over jump when he goes to shows;normally he does a smaller class and then a big class. AfterSopot I was pre-qualified for the Grand Prix events with him, which made a big difference. And of course after the EuropeansI’m pre-qualified for all Grand Prix shows with any horse untilthe next Europeans in 2019 which is also a nice boost.

A.C : What did you think about the Irish team – did you findRodrigo's selection surprising ?C.O’C. : No. Rodrigo decided early on in the year to sacrifice theNations Cups. It was a tough but solid decision, and the onlyway to achieve real success. If you try and take every singletarget on the way towards the big goal, you’re only foolingyourself and you’re very lucky if it works. But if you are reallyprepared to plan and sacrifice and stand back a little, then youcan go for the big target. Being Irish, we tend to over-focus onthe Nations Cup, sometimes to the detriment of otherchampionships. Having a Brazilian manager helps ! (laughter)

A.C : How did you and the team take Betram Allen’s below-parperformance ?C.O’C. : Bertram had his mishap with Hector, and that wasunfortunate. But in team sports you have to help each other;you have to pull together and fight for each other.

A.C : What about the decision to forgo the 2nd round; did it affectthe team’s motivation ?C.O’C. : I think Rodrigo was quick to decide that it was maybenot so good for Bertram to do the second round… not just for

him and his horse, but also for the rest of the team. It wasimportant that there should be no distraction ; that the teamstay really focused. Bertram was on the ground, to help andadvise us if he saw anything.

A.C : A couple of days later, you won the Individual Bronzemedal. Which medal gave you the most satisfaction and why ?C.O’C. : I think the team medal. My last team medal dates backto Hartpury in England in 2000 when I was still a junior rider. Tobe part of a team that wins Gold is something special andimmensely satisfying, and Rodrigo played a large part in ourachieving it. He believed in us and never ceased to encourageus. In return, he expected a lot of us, setting the bar very high. But that’s what keeps us motivated and makes us excel. Hestrengthens our team spirit – the feeling that we really can doamazing things when we work together.

A.C : What are your plans for the upcoming months, for you andfor Good Luck ?C.O’C. : It was always my plan that Good Luck would have aproper break for the winter. I really want to aim for the WorldEquestrian Games next year, so I’ll start him up next spring.Meanwhile, he’ll stay in Ireland, out in the fields, and go for ridesin the forest every day. We’ll keep him in flat work, but he’ll notjump properly again until the beginning of next summer.

A.C : So is the World Equestrian Games in Tryon your next goal?C.O’C. : Yes. WEG is the Irish Team’s first chance at Olympicqualification for 2020. I will make my plan back from that target.See you in Tryon!

Max KühnerAN ABUNDANCE OF TALENT

Max Kühner’s parents both rode in their spare time, when their other professional activities allowed.Unlike most riders, therefore, Max did not grow up surrounded by the sport, and considered ridingas a hobby. It all began while on holiday in the mountains where, due to lack of snow, he was givena riding lesson. At sixteen, he began competing in Junior shows with the pony his grandmother hadgiven him a few years earlier. But he continued his studies in parallel, in economics, and then got ajob in industry. His riding also progressed in leaps and bounds, being selected for the Germannational team where he got the chance to ride alongside the world’s top riders. Today, he lives inBavaria where he has his stables, and rides for Austria, regularly participating in international GrandPrix events.

CWDers #12 Sportobsession

Surrounded by sketches, CWD’s R&Dteam has spent the past year working

flat out on the new design for theDynamick® range, never losing sight oftheir objectives and the desire for evergreater performance. A new look forboth the 2Gs and the Mademoiselle,

each deferring to the other to producea range that is more dynamic, with

improved close contact and comfort forboth horse and rider. A single line

for the entire range, more refined, moreattractive.

Performance and beauty are in the detailThe new design for the Dynamick® range (2Gs and Mademoiselle) is being launched at this year’s Paris HorseShow. It echoes the Dynamick® saddle-tree itself, with the flowing line of its knee rolls and the new, moretechnical look of the saddle flap reinforcement that underscores the line of the stirrup-leather loops and givesa visual signature to top-level sport by CWD.The Mademoiselle takes the lead from the 2Gs, with a simpler, more pleasingly curved knee roll, while the 2Gsborrows the Mademoiselle’s fine stitching to highlight the trajectory of the stirrup leathers and their carbonkeepers. In both models, the lower flap reinforcement has been redesigned, improving the shape of the flap and reducingits thickness to allow greater freedom of the rider’s calf and more comfort for the entire leg.

Integrated fastenings and redesigned cantle protectorThe cantle protector has also been given a more modern look in keeping with the silhouette of the seat. Thestitching around the cantle on the Mademoiselle is more discreet and chic, doing away with the colouredpiping. The rear of the 2Gs saddle remains unchanged with a more streamline, sporty look for the cantleprotector.Throughout the range, panel screws have been replaced by a more integrated fastening system that enablesthe saddle to sit better and more comfortably on the horse’s back.

Sensation is taken to a whole new level with the Dynamick® saddle-tree’s finer points and comfort. Why don’t you give it a try?

Andy Chansel : What did you make of the product, of its look, thefirst time you saw it ?Anaïs-Cerise Azorin : To be honest, I wasn’t very convinced. As it is,I already spend so much time on my telephone, and I thought itwas yet another gadget! But at the official presentation, it reallyamazed me. It represents a vast amount of time and thought andis an extremely advanced and interesting tool. I felt a fool forletting myself be influenced by my conventional prejudices. Thisis the era of connected objects, and it’s obvious that they shouldbe associated with the world of equestrian sport nowadays.

A.C : Once out of the saddle, you were able to analyse your roundswith the video and the data collected by the app…A-C.A : Yes, we had a great debriefing session. We analysed thevarious rounds after dissecting each stride in the greatest detail. It was hugely instructive! I’m only an amateur rider, and am wellaware of my mistakes and my demons that repeatedly come to thesurface, but I’m also quite good at ignoring them all from time to

time… That’s impossible with the video – you can’t avoid them ! Inaddition to the images, there’s all the highly detailed, concretedata relating to the particular moment when you are either doingtoo much or not enough.

A.C : Now that you’ve tested the iJump® and its app, what do youthink of it ?A-C.A : I love it. I think it’s a fantastic work tool, especially foramateur riders. We don’t always ride correctly, and I genuinelybelieve that the iJump® and its detailed indicators can help usprogress.

A.C : Will we have the pleasure of seeing you using an iJump® soon ?A-C.A : Why not! For the moment, I’m still taking advantage ofmy 2Gs Mademoiselle saddle. If I encounter the iJump® at acompetition with Mimi, I’m not against the idea of analysing around, as a means of refocusing on certain data in order to adjustmy tactics afterwards.

Anaïs-Cerise is the face behind the blognamed Cavalcades by Nana-Cerise. We caught upwith her for a training session with the iJump®

on the eve of a competition with her belovedmount, crazy Mimi, as she likes to call him. Inspite of already being hyper-connected and atthe forefront of all the latest trends, she gaveher stamp of approval to the iJump® withoutthe slightest hesitation.

After a number of eventful yearsand fine performances at ponylevel, Clément Fuzeau hasmoved on up into the world

of national and international amateurcompetitions, ever-keen to learn and improve. We invited him to try out the iJump® and sharehis experience with us.Andy Chansel : Which aspect do you find the most interesting toput into practice and why ?Clément Fuzeau : I would say the regularity of stride. It enablesyou to improve all the other aspects: stride, pace and speed perminute during a given circuit. All this data enables you to createexercises and acquire tips for improving your daily work routine.

A.C: Does the iJump® enable you to know and understand your horsebetter ?C.F : For sure ! Approaches and symmetry are essential forcombinations, and it’s interesting to see how we handle thesemovements. The recovery and balance data have allowed me to getto know my horse much better, especially in the lines. All this

detailed data improves my understanding of my horse, and enablesme to react accordingly.

A.C : So it gives you precise indicators about what you perceive andthen explains why…C.F : Yes, exactly. When I perceive things differently to my coach, for example, the iJump® has proved extremely useful : by providingconcrete data rather than impressions, it has enabled us to agreeand understand each other better. Other times, for instance, whenyou clock up points for time even though you felt you hadcompleted the round within the time allowed, the iJump® allowsyou to understand why, by showing the pace, speed per minute andregularity of stride. It gives a wonderful overall view.

A.C : Does it complement your coach’s advice ?C.F : Yes, absolutely. The data provided by the iJump® saddlesupplements what my coach tells me. If opinions differ, theiJump®’s indicators allow us to discuss things and find a way ofresolving them during our training sessions.

Georges Ngan Sassi is a professional riderfrom Lorrain in eastern France. He already hasthree French Championship titles to his name(cadet, junior and young rider), and hasparticipated in the World Championships forYoung Horses. Today, Georges competes ininternational Grand Prix events and brings onyoung horses. Discover what this promisingyoung rider has to say about the iJump®.

Andy Chansel : In your view, what are the strengths of thisconnected saddle and its app ?Georges Ngan Sassi : It’s a real innovation. We’re only at the startof the use of connected objects in riding, but the iJump® is alreadyan amazing tool. It enables us to visualise the rounds by ourselves, without an external eye, even with the telephone in our pocket. Ona daily basis, it’s wonderful: you can use it for your horses’ jumpingsessions with a view to improving and perfecting your performance.

You can follow each horse’s progress in detail thanks to being ableto compare the various rounds.

A.C : How do you analyse the data collected and how does itinfluence your work ?G.N.S : The data allows me to be aware of all the details thatcannot be seen by the naked eye, nor observed when I’m riding, butwhich are nonetheless essential. I can then adapt my flatwork inaccordance with what the data has allowed me to observe.

A.C : Do you see the iJump® as asupplementary teaching aid for yourpupils ?G.N.S : Of course. It’s a tool that willenable them to become moreindependent while remaining focused ontheir progress. Thanks to the app, wecan debrief after each session andcompare different sessions.

A CENTRE OF RURAL EXCELLENCE FOR THE LEATHER INDUSTRY IN DORDOGNEA PUBLIC/PRIVATE PARTNERSHIP THAT PRODUCES PERFECT LEATHER

Back in 2012, a Centre of Rural Excellence (Pôle d’excellence rurale or PER in French) for theleather industry was set up in the north of the Dordogne, in southwest France, to improve thequality of leather produced and give structure to the sector. Its principal aim was to establisha local supply network of first rate leather, at the demand of CWD, located in Nontron.

Every weekend for nearly 20 years, we’ve been out there heeding your needs. With ourmade-to-measure service at your home, for sure, but also at the numerous differentcompetition grounds. Whether in the countryside or in towns, winter or summer, nationalor international competitions, we make it a point of honour to be close to you. We’re always seeking to go that bit further, and this year we did just that, for you.

At three shows – the GrandPrix Classic Spring Break, the GrandPrix Classic Summer Tour, and the CWD JumpParty – where our special events caused quite the buzz, nurturing the sport obsession that unites us all. Funperformances that took place in an electric atmosphere: theCWD relay race, the CWD Derby and the legendary CWDJump & Drive that awakened the pilot lying dormant in eachof you. And then there were CWD’s entertaining, friendlyparties, where you proved that you too could set the dancefloor on fire, and bend it like Beyoncé.

They were also opportunities for us to show you the levelof service we provide. Mélissa, a skilled saddler who hasbeen working with us for several years, invited you to joinher at the CWD Leather Corner – a pop-up workshop wherewe clean and repair your equipment free of charge, irrespective of the brand. What better way to give your sad-dles and accessories a shine!

In Barbaste, we launched our CWD trial centre, with sportssaddle experts on hand to assist you. They listen, take noteof your wishes and requirements, and advise youaccordingly. You can try our different models of saddle, bothclassic and Dynamick®, as well as having a go with a beauti-ful 2Gs Mademoiselle® or analysing your performance withthe iJump®. All for free and without obligation. An ideal andeffortless way of keeping up with the latest innovations.

Yet again, this year, we’ve gone full tilt. And being at yourside day by day and sharing all these moments with you hasbeen a real pleasure for us. Which is why we fully intend tokeep on being there for you, again and again.

Bart Kenis Mad about languagesBART KENIS IS BELGIAN BY BIRTH AND BELGIAN AT HEART.

HE JOINED CWD’S US TEAM IN 2008, AND AFTER WORKING AS AN EXPERT IN SPORTSSADDLES FOR A NUMBER OF YEARS, HE IS NOW SALES MANAGER FOR THE USAAND CANADA. HE HAS ALWAYS LOVED LANGUAGE, BE IT THAT OF SHAKESPEARE

OR THAT OF MOLIÈRE - AN OBSESSION THAT IS STILL WITH HIM.MEET THE MAN WHO IS NEVER AT A LOSS FOR WORDS.

I’ve been obsessed withlanguage since I was small. In

Belgium there are three di erent spokenlanguages, and over a hundred dialects. As a child, I instinctively rememberedevery dialect I came across. As I grewolder and started to travel, thisobsession stayed with me. As soon as Ihear someone speak, I try to work out

where they are from. Since living in theStates, this guessing game has becomeeven more obsessive : it’s now a questionof guessing exactly which state they arefrom. A!er a few words, I can usually tellif they are a New Yorker, a Bostonian ora Southerner. I speak four languages atpresent. I think Spanish willbe my next one !
