heaD cOach Rex WaLteRS A new era began April 7, 2008, when the Universi-ty of San Francisco named Rex Walters head coach of the men’s basketball pro-gram. The former Kansas star and NBA veteran hit the ground running, and entering his fourth season on the Hilltop, excitement continues to build for what promises to be a memorable season. The Dons look prepared to follow Walters’ challenge: Play hard. Play smart. Play together. After a rocky 4-9 start to the 2010-11 season, USF righted the ship in dramatic fashion and ripped off 11 victories in its last 15 games to close out the regular sea-son. The Dons posted a 10-4 slate in the challenging West Coast Conference – the program’s best league mark since 1982 – and were in contention for the team’s first WCC Regular Season Championship in nearly three decades on the final day. Highlights of the regular season included thrilling overtime triumphs against Colorado (83-81) and eventual WCC Champion Gonzaga (96-91). San Fran-cisco qualified for its first postseason tour-nament since 2004 and marched to the quarterfinals of the 2011 CollegeInsider.com Postseason Tournament. Walters’ coaching pedigree began as a player, receiving tutelage from some of the game’s legendary coaches. Roy Wil-liams at the University of Kansas and the NBA’s Chuck Daly, Larry Brown and Pat Riley all mentored Walters as a player. Walters starred for two seasons at Kansas, and in 68 starts under Williams, averaged 15.6 points per game. KU com-bined to go 56-12 overall and won back-to-back Big Eight titles, capped by a trip to the 1993 Final Four. A two-time All-Big Eight team pick, Walters was the 1993 Big Eight Male Athlete of the Year. After graduating from Kansas in 1993 with a B.S. in education, Walters was selected by New Jersey as the 16th overall pick in the 1993 NBA Draft. He went on to play seven seasons in total with the Nets, Philadelphia 76ers and Miami Heat. Walters and his wife, Deanna, have five children: Addison (15), Drew (13), Riley (10), Gunner (8) and welcomed Ace Jordan in July of 2008.

Game #24 - San Diego Recap DONS ROLL PAST TOREROS 84-70: San Francisco forward Perris Blackwell scored a career-high 26 points to fuel a 84-70 West Coast Conference victory over San Diego in front of a strong crowd at War Memorial Gym on Saturday night. The Dons (15-9, 5-5 WCC) have now won five of their last six and down the Toreros (8-13, 3-6 WCC) for the fifth straight time.

Blackwell entered the night ranked third in the West Coast Conference in field goal percentage at .547 and improved upon his rate Saturday night, shooting .625 (10-16) from the floor. The junior from Etiwanda, CA surpassed his previous career-high of 23 points, which came against North Dakota State in the 2011-12 season opener.

USF entered the second half trailing 40-36, but were lights out after the intermission, shooting a combined .652 (15-23) from the floor. Junior guard Michael Williams came out red hot, hitting a 3-pointer to open the scoring for the Dons in the second frame. Williams continued to carry the Dons down the stretch, scoring 12 second half points en route to a 20-point effort.

Senior forward Angelo Caloiaro and Blackwell also led the charge in the second frame, scoring 11 and 12 points, respectively. Ca-loiaro also established a career-high with nine assists – the most by a Don this season – to go along with seven rebounds (four offensive) and a pair of steals.

A close-fought first half saw eight tied scores and four lead changes, with the Dons trailing the Toreros by four points heading into the locker room.

The Dons held a four-point advantage in the paint in the first half due in large part to Blackwell’s 14 points on 6-11 shooting. Blackwell led all scorers in the first frame and also added three rebounds.

Senior guard Rashad Green didn’t score in the first frame, but had a solid all-around effort with a team-high five boards includ-ing two assists, one block, and one steal. Green finished with five points and led the Dons with three steals.

REX WALTERS EARNS CONTRACT EXTENSION: The Uni-versity of San Francisco and head men’s basketball coach Rex Walters have agreed to a new contract which will run through the 2015-16 season. Walters coached in his 100th game at USF when the Dons opened play in the 2011 Carrs Safeway Great Alaska Shootout with a 71-69 victory against Dartmouth.

“I just want to thank Father Privett, the USF Board of Trustees, Charlie Cross and Scott Sidwell for doing this for me,” Walters said. “It is important that our current players and recruits know that there is a commitment from the University of San Francisco to keep me here to continue building an outstanding program.”

The Dons posted a 10-4 slate in the challenging WCC – the program’s best league mark since 1982 – and were in contention for the team’s first WCC Regular Season Championship in nearly three decades on the final day.

THE KEYS TO USF’S SURGE: USF’s 2010-11 men’s basketball team will never be accused of using a fast start. In fact, the Dons carried a 4-9 record into its Hilltop Challenge game against Hampton December 30. From there, it was a significantly different story. These charts at right and below show the tale of the tape, measuring key statistical categories during the Dons 4-9 start compared to its 15-6 finish; USF’s non-conference slate against the 2011 West Coast Conference campaign; and finally, compares the 2009-10 season with 2010-11 regular season.

NEWCOMERS READY TO ROCK THE HILLTOP: What a difference a year makes. Last season San Francisco entered the year with just seven years of returning Division I experience, six coming under the direction of head coach Rex Walters. This season, the Dons welcome back all five starters and 10 letter-winners from a squad that posted a 19-15 record and a 10-4 West Coast Conference slate. This year the Dons welcome three newcomers to the fold - freshmen guards Chris Adams (Covina, CA) and Gavin Hoffmann (Portland, OR), and freshman forward Mark Tollefsen (Danville, CA).

GREEN AND WILLIAMS EARN PRESEASON HONORS: Senior forward Rashad Green and junior guard Michael Williams earned 2011-12 Preseason All-West Coast Conference honors. Green captured All-West Coast Conference First Team honors, averaging a team-high 13.6 points, 5.5 rebounds and 2.6 assists per game during league play. Green powered San Francisco’s run to the quarterfinals of the 2011 CollegeInsider.com Postseason Tournament, averaging 19.0 points on .567 (17-30) shooting to go along with 8.7 rebounds and 4.3 assists in three tournament contests. A 2010-11 NABC All-District 9 Second Team selection, Williams led the Dons in scoring (14.7 ppg) as a sophomore and ranked in the top-five among WCC scoring leaders while his 74 3-pointers were the second most by a Don in a single-season. Both Green and Williams were named to the 2011 National All-Jesuit All-America Team.

USF IN THE JESUIT BASKETBALL SPOTLIGHT: USF is proud of its rich Jesuit heritage and the Dons will compete in no fewer than eight games against fellow Jesuit schools during the 2011-12 season. San Francisco takes on Loyola Marymount Saturday, February 4 in the sixth Jesuit Spotlight game of the year. USF compiled a record of 6-3 against Jesuit foes during the 2010-11 campaign. San Francisco is taking part in the Jesuit Spotlight Project for the fourth-consecutive season, using Jesuit basketball to raise awareness of the outstanding education available at the nation’s 28 Jesuit colleges and universities. Last season, Michael Williams and Rashad Green were named to the 2010-11 All-Jesuit Men’s Basketball All-American Team. For more information, log on to www.ajcunet.edu/jesuitbasketball.
