Project Vision

8

Use this Phase 7 process as the catalyst to:

enhance optimal well-being and productivity of students, faculty, and staff while promoting shifts in pedagogical and operational approaches,

integrating the GGU community, and providing effective spaces for individuals, departments, and schools

that instill pride and inspire academic and professional success.

Guiding Principles - University

10

Discovery

• Design for the future faculty, staff, and students of GGU• Enhance and celebrate the unique specialization of GGU on Law, Taxation, Accounting, and Business

education• Acknowledge and provide for the distinct needs of each and every student group/program cluster:

Brand and Identity

Technology and Relationships

• Maintain technology as an integral element of the learning environment• Engage in an inquiry about the relevancy of the “work anywhere” concept for GGU faculty, staff, and

administration and the “learn anywhere” concept for GGU students

• Leverage the excellent physical location of GGU to maximize student attraction and retention • Understand and define pedagogical and operational goals and priorities; then use them to answer

questions about physical space

Physical Space

Above all else, focus on the needs of the students.

Page 11: 12 19-12 ggu-year_review

Boundaries - University

11

Discovery

• Where possible, reduce costs

• Campus must be urban and proximate to Embarcadero and Montgomery BART and Muni stations, and the Transbay Terminal

• Programmatic needs must be accommodated within current building envelopes

• Design space for flexibility, shared use, and a feeling of openness and transparency while accommodating the need for confidentiality

• Enable the facilities to accommodate a variable range of faculty, staff, and students

• Provide classrooms to accommodate a range of class sizes (50 - 80 for lecture classes, an average of 22 for most, and as small as 10 for seminars)

• Maintain diversity of student population

• Provide space for adjunct faculty

• Remain true to the criterion established in the San Francisco Remodel Plan Phases 1 through 10

Page 12: 12 19-12 ggu-year_review

Guiding Principles - Objective 4: Library

12

Discovery

• Provide convenient access to University Library resources for GGU faculty, staff, students, and alumni

• Optimize space for student/faculty interactions

• Create a space that supports the academic life of the GGU community in a collaborative environment• Address environmental concerns • Establish I.T. and electrical infrastructure • Expand study areas (group and individual study)

• Integrate with Learning Support Services to become a one-stop destination for students

• Reduce the amount of square footage allocated to book storage and expand spaces for study, tutoring, and staff

• Provide adequate, functional workspaces for all University Library and Learning Support Services staff

Page 13: 12 19-12 ggu-year_review

13

Guiding Principles - Objective 6: Lawyering Skills Program

• Feature the Lawyering Skills Program as a distinguishing asset of the Law School• Create physical spaces that facilitate the pedagogical focus on advocacy and courtroom training, as well as provide

naming opportunities• Establish the program as a source of pride that hosts competitions and events with other law schools• Leverage the physical space in support of the law school’s goal to become nationally renowned for its litigation and

advocacy training• Design spaces to support interactive programs where law students receive hands-on learning

• Support the concept of experiential versus lecture-based learning, and align with the law school’s pedagogical stance as a ‘practice-ready’ graduate program

• House state-of-the-art technology that is being used in real courtrooms• Plan for varying uses and flexible work spaces, in particular for teams of 4-8, and groups of 16 and 25-30• Create a realistic, simulated courtroom experience• Provide a space for informal learning, gathering, and research

AssessmentObservations and Qualitative Investigation - Objective 6: Lawyering Skills Program

• Utilization:• 3 classes per semester which require Moot Court setup (2 day, 1 night)• 3 to 4 days per week• 3 to 4 hours per day

• Occupancy:• Summer STEP classes - 25 per section• Fall and Spring classes - 16 per section

• Smaller trial teams of 4-8

• Special Needs:• Competitions - space needed to host larger cross-school trials• Events - ceremonial space for special events, procedural meetings• Finals - up to 7 smaller trials and exams

33

AssessmentObservations and Qualitative Investigation - Objective 6: Lawyering Skills Program

• Rooms currently being used as courtrooms are simply classrooms and offices that are adjusted and modified for use as courtrooms; this makeshift use can be frustrating for the users and contributes to the overall low occupancy of classroom space, and overall provides an inefficient use of space. • Aside from 1 or 2 auxiliary rooms (storage, conference room, etc), the rooms currently used

for STEP and litigation courses currently provide enough raw square footage for courtroom-style classes. Based on occupancy loads (STEP observations only), there is in fact plenty of total square footage. Providing rooms properly sized and equipped for these trial-type courses would mitigate this issue, and would increase space efficiencies.

• The distance between current rooms contributes to a sense of disconnection within the program and the Law School• Centralizing the Moot Courts and potentially providing an interactive hub that connects all of

these rooms would both physically and symbolically strengthen the identity of the Law School• There exists inadequate technology and furniture these rooms, which require realistic

courtroom setups• Given the Law School’s desire to be a skills-oriented, courtroom-ready program, the proper

spatial arrangements of a real courtroom must be made, and current technology should be housed in these rooms

Productivity“I do all my work in my office. Sharing with another person would be extremely distracting. It would

also preclude confidential conversations with colleagues and students.”“For years I worked remotely, but have found that having a private office gives me the space and

time to dedicate myself to my work.”

Privacy”I need private work space, confidential meeting space and a secure place to store confidential

documents.”“The need for student privacy and confidential conversations with faculty and students. Having the

option to work from home and in the office is a major plus for efficiency and comfort”

Storage”My campus office is where most of books are stored. The office provides me with very good

working conditions because the tools I need like photocopier, duplicating machines etc are easily within my reach. More over, I have a very quiet atmosphere to work.”

AssessmentSurvey

For what purposes would you use a faculty lounge?

GGU Fall Survey (9/17/12-9/28/12) N = 49

Relaxation, Community, and Breaks“Relax, share ideas in a relaxed atmosphere, a place to get coffee that does not detract from the

business-like atmosphere that should exist in front of the dean's office!”“To meet informally with my colleagues, to eat meals someplace other than at my desk, to take

visitors (guest lecturers)”“Share pedagogical techniques. Develop a greater sense of community and collective purpose.”

“It would be helpful as a means of getting together informally with colleagues in other disciplines to discuss teaching practices and course content items or to exchange information and knowledge. I

also think that the institution of a regular faculty tea (daily or weekly for an hour at a time) would allow for greater interdisciplinary cross-pollination among faculty and provide opportunities for students to

interact more informally with faculty.”“To have lunch or coffee away from my desk and to be able to interact informally with other faculty

members. This would help foster collegiality.”“Might meet with people there. It would be nice to mingle with faculty from the different schools as we are segregated by suite or floor now. Some of my colleague's offices are so crowded with stuff I can't meet with them in their space so this would be an alternative to my office-- especially if coffee

is available!”

AssessmentSummary Findings

Objective 1: Facility Utilization and Needs Analysis• Classroom requirements are standard• There is some need for a large and aesthetically pleasing gathering space• Interactive Hub

• Survey results call into question the need for multiple student lounges• Consider if a consolidated, centralized lounge be better utilized? Would allow for the provision of space to house more food options• Given the number of students who use GGU Student Services once a month or less, it may not require a centralized location

Objective 4: University Library Conceptual Programming• Current University Library hours accommodate most students’ needs• Interesting that peak hours of use were from 12-4pm• Perspective that group study is in high demand may be over-blown

• Students reported that individual, quiet study space would be used almost daily• Faculty reported that they assigned group projects only 3-5 times a semester (20% said they never do)• Of those who assign group projects, many happen during class time

Page 46: 12 19-12 ggu-year_review

46

AssessmentSummary Findings

Objective 5: Admin. and Support Areas Conceptual Planning• Faculty Offices

• Confirms space program allocation of 110 sf per full-time faculty member• Emphasizes the value of a private faculty office as part of the compensation package• Adj. Faculty responses confirm that most currently do not have an adequate working environment• The space we’re providing for group study rooms + conference rooms can also serve as space for adj. faculty to meet with students• All other working supplies can be provided in the faculty lounge

• Staff Offices• While staff would like a private office, student responses indicate that they may be unnecessary for the majority of staff, which confirms space program allocation of 64 sf for most staff members

Page 47: 12 19-12 ggu-year_review

MKTHINKGolden Gate University SF Remodel Project - Phase 7: Master Planning & Programming

proprietary and confidential

47

AssessmentSummary Findings

• Significant latent capacity in the instructional space inventory

• Absence of central “student commons” space

• Current facility organization by school and program creates inefficient use of space and lack of flexibility

• University Library: high proportion of existing space is allocated to books, significant demand for study space

• Libraries and lounges most important student spaces

• Law School: need for specialized space to support the Litigation Program and general lawyering skills to remain competitive

Planning & Design

• Recapture underutilized and underoccupied classroom space through classroom rightsizing

• Create more flexibility within office environments and across school boundaries

• Increase the inventory of group study areas and seminar/conference rooms

• Consolidate and improve student interaction space

• Increase book storage density

• Focus renovation efforts on high-impact areas• University Library• Large classrooms• Inefficient office areas

• Additional opportunity areas• Outdoor spaces• Connection to 40 Jesse• Circulation and wayfinding

Emerging Themes and Opportunities

Page 68: 12 19-12 ggu-year_review

MKTHINKGolden Gate University SF Remodel Project - Phase 7: Master Planning & Programming

proprietary and confidential

68

Planning & DesignEmerging Themes and Opportunities

• Ecker Place invites a new connection for a stronger campus presence and identity

• Latent capacity in the instructional space inventory allows for consolidation to West Wing

• Absence of central “student commons” space invites new HUB on the first level

• Consolidation of instructional space to West Wing provides increased flexibility to better accommodate schools and departments on the East Side

• Book storage consolidation opens up space for the in-high-demand group study rooms and other student study spaces

• Latent capacity in instructional space also allows for provision of specialized space to support the Litigation Program and general lawyering skills
