    A Warm Welcome! !

Warm welcome to the Nepal-lipi-online, launched on the Auspicious day of the 1130th

Nepal New Year and Heartiest Greetings for aHappy, healthy and prosperous New Year!

This is yet a small effort by a dedicated

voluntary team to study and disseminate the

classical thoughts and culture of Nepal. Nepal

scripts play a vital role in studying Nepal classics

and understanding the ancient part of arts,

history, culture and religion of this Himalayan

nation which became a republic last year. This is the first time that a website is being

launched in the Nepal scripts, a long awaited

project which still has a long way to a successful

achievement. It all depends on our moral, active,

material and financial support. This is a Global

    initiative for us by us.

We started by designing the Unicode

compatible fonts for Nepal scripts (Prachalit and

Ranjana). However, due to lack of necessary

funding and technical support, our effort ofencoding is going to take time than presumed.

For now, the most of the postings are available

    on image and pdf files.

The Nepal-lipi.com, the worlds first online

    bulletin in Nepal script provides:

    Information for students, academics,

researchers and practitioners in the fields of

    classical Nepal thought and culture,

Japan-Nepal relations and Buddhism. News, views, reviews, resources, and links to

sites related to Nepal, Japan and Buddhism.

Access to over 20,000 Nepal Bhasa, Sanskrit

and Pali manuscripts in Nepal scripts and

    printed documents from Nepal and

    collections abroad.

Nepal calendar to deepen understanding ofthe chronology of classical Nepal and its

    modern use.

Although Nepal scripts were used to write

Sanskrit, Maithili and Nepal Bhasa in the past,

the Nepal Bhasa writers retained the use of the

script upto date. Hence, more contents will be in

Nepal Bhasa while we welcome writers to

provide us materials of other languages written

in Nepal scripts. Our attempts to locate Tarka

Vitarka a Khasa Bhasa book written in

Bhujingmola Nepal script has yet to succeed. We

will appreciate your help in locating this book

and other materials written in Nepal scripts for

us to study and disseminate among us.

    Thank you for visiting us!

    Newah Identity

    - -Daya Ratna Shakya

    , ,, ,

    , " "

    , ,, ,, , , ,, ,

By the beginning of the 21st century, the existence

of newah people has been not only limited to tri cities of

Kathmandu valley but also out side the whole country as far

as in America, Japan, England, as well as in Australia. In

contrast, I see a large number of Newah people in Nepal is

not aware of understanding the importance of own heritage.

Until they leave the country or travel to foreign land, they

do not realize how important the Newah heritage for them

to save the identity as the Newah people of Nepal. I have

seen the people who were prefered not to call Newah in the

valley and when they leave the country they feel proud of

being Newah. In the valley when they get involved in a

campaign of preservation ofNewah language and culture

the others blame them by categorizing those unemployed

people with joblessness or influenced with communist

ideology. But they feel much proud of being Newah after so

many years of dedication to save the identity of Newah. It isalso true that when the Newah persons do not go out of

country they become less aware on saving own identity.

A simple goal of this article is to draw some guide lines

to follow on what we can do to save our identity. The very

important fact we should keep in mind is to let others know

that the Newah people are the principal inhabitant

of Nepal mandala. Newah is not a caste but is an inclusive

form of many castes and creeds. That is why we see many

types of religion, culture, traditions, rituals, festivals etc.

within Newah. They are all binded by a common language

called Nepal Bhasa, the language of Newah people. But this

fact is incomprehensive to young generation of Newah

people these days. People in Nepal incorrect hierarchy of

caste such as Bahun, Chhetri, Newar etc. Because, the

Bahuns and chhetris are also exist within Newars

including considerably lower castes like Sarkis the shoe

makers as well as blacksmiths. Accordig to Hindu caste

system four categories such as Brahaman chhetri, Vaisya

and Sudras are discussed. In Newah all of them are

available with harmonious atmosphere. But the young

generation of Newah people considered Newah as simply a

caste of Nepal. It is a wrong concept they have learned from

    educational institutes.

Newah no direct historical link like Newah people do.

When they leave the country theyconsider themselves as

people are the only people who have inseparable link with

the country Nepal. The other ethenic group has the citizens

of Nepal. But they are bound to accept official language that

calls all Newah people as Nepali. In my view we are citizens

of Nepal but we can not call us NEPALI with influence of

khas language. We should attempt to let others call us

Newah not Nepali. Because our language in Newah not

Neapli. In Newah language there is no entry of the word

NEPALI. As the mool mantra of this article I suggest that

we must attempt to make every body aware of not to call

    Nepali to Newah people.

Another important aspect victimizes the Newah

identity is by the system of education. In the curriculumn

the text books are written in propmoton of khas tradition,

but there is a huge lack of material that strengthens the

empowerment of ethnicity. Many of boarding school use

the books publised in India and discourage to use the books

publishe in Nepal that includes materials supporting the

ethnic existency. Inthis way the khas oriented education

ystem kills the Newah people are victimized by slow poision

spread by the system of education that focuses on story of

khas tradition and success. Due to this victimization the

newah children have lost their identity they feel they are

Nepali but not Newah. They have no clue why the word

Newari is derogatory for newah people. Some day in future

these newahchildren may start asking what the meaning of

Newah in Nepalese perspectives is all about. To support the

newah identity the educational material must include

readings on Newah heritage. In addition the other

importnat aspect of devaluation of newah identity is

teaching and speaking khas language in Newah homes. I

    guideline

consider it as an epidemic to eradicate the awareness of

Newah heritage among the newah families. It signals to

destroy not only the notion of heritage but the whole

Newah nationality. It is true that no other ethenic groups

stand for preservation of Newah heritage; they must protect

their identity by themselves. If they speak in favor of saving

the identiry it may become too late and they may accuse

thah the people are not aware of own identity. By virtue or

vices the children who were educated during the

Panchayatperiod have already became parents by now and

we can imagine how they protect the culture and language

to their decendents in future if thay them selves are not

qualified to theach their own children. So I see the problem

of parroting in their own lap to their children in Khas

    language.

To help and to understand the Newah identity I have

drawn a tree diagram. This can be framed and hang in the

wall of your room to cross check a subject that related to

the newah heritage. By doing this one will not have to look

for the wesite or magazine to see the gudience of this

drawing. We must eradicate this type of epidemic

disappearance of the languge. In this dragram I have shows

the subject of newah identity for preservation. I have taken

a faith on your side that the Newah people spread out in the

world may take this as a guide lines to protect and preserve

the identity as Newah. I wish you all the best for the up

    coming new year NS 1130.

Revisiting Beloved city after 40 years:

"The Alarming Architecture of the Kathmandu city"

    - By Wolfgang Korn(English Translation by Rahena Shrestha Wester)

    Sunday, 17thSeptember: Arrival in Kathmandu

By the approach in Kathmandu, it was a first shock:

The municipal development of the Ring road, which

was planned 38 years ago by us is sloshed.

Unplanned proliferation, how it has grown wild and

had noticed from above and later it seemed to be true.

We drove in a hotel jeep of the Tibet-Guest-House, it

was an alarming trip: Ring road was full, struggling

for another centimeter (of space), buses, trucks, cars,

motorcycles, bicycles, tempos and many people. 19

years ago rice fields were here! Horns, Horns, Horns!

I can only suspect, where we are, recognizing which

way we can reach Durbar square, the trip after

Thamel. I was so shocked that my mouth did not

close: where earlier two to three storied houses were

stood on large plots of land now stood 8-storied on

stamps size. All old things are treated as rubbish!

Only concrete and brick stones! Because of the tall

buildings at the left and right sides, hardly the lightcomes to the lanes. Everywhere crowded by people,

    noise, horns, and advertisements!!

    The Tibet-Guest-House is obviously and

permanently expanded, the buildings are built at the

same height of 5-8 stories next to each other. Hotels

and housing with shops in the respective ground

floors at narrow lanes that look everything very

    similar.

With the help of a map, I fought myself as the first

reconnaissance and found the direction to

Bauddhanath at the beginning of 1970.

Durbar Square, the Hanuman Dhoka, where I had

worked for almost four years between 1974 and 1978

for the UNESCO. May be the breadth of the lane is

about three meters: Jammed traffic by cars,

motorcycles, rickshaws, bicycles (only few), carried

with heavy loads, which are often not easy to handle,

usual pedestrian. No sidewalks! Only occasionally

steps before shops, on which one can flee and rescue

    himself.

At the entrance to the palace zone a policeman

was present, a ticket house: Entrance is to be paid,

200 rupees, about 2 Euro per day. Ticket with day

stamp! (Is the money collected from the receipt is

being used in this respective zone?)

Astonishing, all buildings of this complex are in a

good shape. One is renovated just with the

technologies that had been developed for more than

30 years ago by us! Seems to me, my Kathmandu hasnot yet entirely lost. I'm little bit proud of me and

calm myself. We returned back to the hotel again by

    taking crowded narrow lanes.

Friday, 6th of October (Return from Trek toKathmandu)

From Dhulikhel, the trip was a shocking tour, similar

to that of 20 days ago, when we drove from the

airport to the hotel in the city. Villages such as

    Bauddhanath in 2006

Dhulikhel and Banepa are rebuilt. In the left and the

right of the streets, stand newly constructed ugly 5

storied new buildings, the free rooms between the

buildings and streets are covered with open-air

workshops, market stands etc. The former free andbeautiful view from the street of Bhaktapur, where

the snow capped mountain was visible has now been

occupied with buildings. Thimi has comparably

with Bhaktapur along a new suburb that Chinese

street received almost already catchment area of

    Kathmandu.

When we reached the Ring road we were again in

the turmoil, in the chaos, which I've already

described above. We struggled to reach the hotel, met

our troops again. We wanted to spend two nights at

the hotel and reserved it. We went to KS, our

Nepalese friend, who wants to settle at the valley edge,

    in Buddhanilkantha.

    Monday, 9th October

Water splash, little wind, sun, Bougainvillea and

other shrubs bloom, distant dogs bark, otherwise

quiet and peace! The water runs slowly in the half

empty swimming pool of VLS house. Gigantic plot of

land at the foot of the Shivapuri aboveBuddhanilkantha, where the stone image of Vishnu

rests on a stone built snake bed in a water pool.

The plot of land is so large that it can be used for

three comfortable housings, for gardens and some

fields as a reserve for further housing.

Good quality of water passes here because it lies

near to the source of the brook, that supplies water to

    a small part of Kathmandu.

    Bhaktapur 40 years ago

    Wednesday, 11th October (Bhaktapur)

VLS driver drops first the children at the different

schools in Patan in order to take us to Bhaktapur.

At the eastern outskirts of Patan, near to theRing road, I recognized the eastern Stupa of that four,

Ashoka Stupas, of this city. During my stay here in

the past, the Stupas the monument belonged to the

oldest religious buildings of Nepal - stood far outside

in the fields. Willful constructions and toleration (by

officials) of unplanned buildings closer and around

this monument is a big shame. The former path to the

fields has grown to a busy street. The busy street and

the Stupa in only about five meter distance, a bamboo

scaffolding the tip of the Stupa. Repairs were under

way. Such unwarranted actions had already changed

the structure of Stupa. Where is the Archeology

Department?Bhaktapur, the third largest city in the valley, has

been received very well as a historic center, the new

buildings have been displaced at the edge.

Entrance into the city costs 10$ per nose,

expensive, expensive! But if the money is invested

into the city renewal, it is okay.

We were comfortable to see only few structures

have changed: there were still small shops, simpleteashops. Generally one cannot drive inside the city.

One can park the cars at the edge of the city. The new

building with good Terracotta brick stones facade has

adapt itself in its height and width.

It can be seen well that a development project

(Entwicklungshilfe project) has so persistently been

continued in Bhaktapur, so that architectural and

artistic advanced culture was able to rescue itself into

the new time. This city rehabilitation program had

begun in the middle of the 70s funded by BRD of

    Bhaktapur in 2006

Germany (BRD) and were rehabilitated by German

architects, city planners. Not only the buildings the

Germans improved the water supply, sewers were put

and the First Sewage Treatment Plant was

constructed orderly. The Germans also tried to improve the income of

the inhabitants through helping businesses. How far

it has been successful that we cannot judge but we

can assess that the restaurant still exists after 30

years in the front of the 5 storied (Nyatapola) Pagoda,

a well structured, clean and well managed temple. We

enjoyed the view with the coffee at the upper floor.

In the afternoon, we went on foot from

Pashupati to Bauddhanath with the photos of the

1960 ties in the hand, I compare photos with the

current situation: The Stupa of Bauddhanath had

been laid in the middle of the fields, surrounded with

two to three storied houses . The roofs were covered

with straw. Today the same view over 3 to 6 storied

building made of concrete. The golden tip of the

    Stupa can only be recognized.

The Stupa: The Bauddhanath Stupa is the centre

of its own city. Where do the money come from, also

for the gigantic new Tibetannischen monastery and

on the surrounding hills with best distance visibility?

About 5 pm on a weekday no chance fromhere to Swayambhunath, per tourist bus over the

Ring road. Discontinuance, back to Kathmandu, to

Thamel on detours the traffic jam. The bus is full,

the sweat of the driver is also full in the Monsoon

    muggy.

    Wednesday, 18th October

Hotel Monument Paradise, on the roof terrace: An

Englishman is in hurry, a young German lady goes

Eastside of the temple 40 years ago

along with him. The German lady wants to do

something for the Nepalese women. She would like to

sell domestic felt clothes in Germany, "From women

for women" - so it is her Motto!,, without the evil men.

The women are only exploited by the men!.My view over the roof landscape of Kathmandu:

Over the area of the junction of Vishnumati and

Bagmati with good view of vultures circle highly

above probably attracted of not burned parts of the

corpse , on bad buried corpses or of animal cadaver,

which has been washed around the stinking broth of

both,, holy,, rivers. Both rivers are with sewer,

although only a slight part of the sewages of the

metropolis flow in the rivers. Where do the flushes

sink? So far I know, there is no Sewage Treatment

Plant for probably 1.5 million Kathmandu inhabitants

and not also for another million inhabitants of thevalley. Have they seen Sewage Treatment Plant in

Bhaktapur, that was constructed 30 years ago with

the money of Germany and with the German

specialists for this old town!!! Is it (Sewage

Treatment Plant) yet in operation in Bhaktapur?

From 5 pm, sales booths are allowed to

standardize and built in many city areas in order to

hinder traffics and other things. Sidewalks, even on

the New Road are covered by the street dealers. The

pedestrians are forced to come to the busy streets. It

is the joy for the cars and motorcyclist. I do it thesame thing(I came also to the busy street because the

pavements were covered by the street dealers).

The horn is more important than the fourth

wheel of the car. Crowded, pushing, cheating- gladly,

disturbing the traffic participants on its side, seek

    spaces and quickly close them!!

What the people want to sell! Everything! Each

and every house has a shop on its ground floor. In the

city, in the country side, on the country roads, and its

side lanes: The excessive supply of the goods.

in concrete building are like showing off. In front of

those buildings the poor salesmen, usually

withvegetable and fruits, the thinnest Indians

pushing their bicycles through the lanes, carrying full

of bananas, oranges, Chinese apples. They have beenorganized well. In this manner useful and useless

fruits are being offered, the fight for the survival!

None of the Nepalese sell the fruits in this way.

Areas of the old town such as before 30, 40 years,

with only few 7- stored houses on a base of often not

more than 20 square meters! Something else the old,

the familiarized atmosphere! A few more facade with

carved doors and windows but the money is missing

    to modernize it.

The Temple, the Pagodas are being optically

pushed down by the high new buildings: My

introduction text in the book " The TraditionalArchitecture of the Kathmandu Valley" encounters no

longer to it, it shines no more the tips of the golden

Temple over the roofs of the settlements!

In the place of the golden tips of the temple the

Plastics tanks and satellite dish can be seen!

Kathmandu, which has 100000 inhabitants, has

been increased more than 1 million of population!

Which city of the world has increased its population

tenfold within 20 years? And also, that without any

Town Planning!!!! It is Absolutely Not in Order. The

small routes (paths) which lead into the fields, oftennarrow dams between rice fields are now main

development veins for the new city zones.

Where are the pipe lines for the water supply and

electric lines for electricity ? The visibility are: The

electric lines are bundled at the post, mixed with the

    telephone lines. Where are the

    sewers?

The water supply at the surrounding countryside

shows the capacity of more than 20 years before!

[No development of water supply for the increasing

    population in the valley]

Water is pumped out from the stream, ground of the

valley, deep well upwards: Streams and rivers are

    drying up.

The rich people, for example, who settled in

Buddhanilkantha in large houses, did this with the

vision: At the foot of the mountain Shivapuri collects

water of good quality. The water from Shivapuri

wants to flow into the valley but is tapped already far

above. Dozens of black plastic pipes fill the precious

goods probably free of charge in the plots of land,

which are highly walled around , irrigate gardens,

filling up the swimming pools, running through thetoilets. (Drinking water in a good quality can be

bought in plastic bottles. How long the filling factory

Matatirtha could hold the capacity for the

    consumers?)

Low below, in the valley, to the cities, the

streams are drying, they can no more fill up the rivers.Even in the monsoon time gluts it only to better

    streams up.

Besides other the Toyota dealer also lives here in

    Budhanilkantha.

The Import licenses for more than thousand mini

buses made him millionaire by the means of the

blessing of license. Not only the prime-minister the

further government employees of his sphere has also

influences and are supposed to benefit economically

by the importing of the cars.

They (politicians) also live almost next to the

general manager of the SOS children's villagesNepals (money source?).

I must admit however that the people are

satisfied with the public traffic means - I too belonged

to that public traffic for 14 days. Nowadays if

someone has recognized the system then one can

come at every place within and also outside the valley,

such as towards Banepa and Dhulikhel, in mini buses,

electro Scooter, taxis. Few electric buses of the

government, which were contributed 30 year ago by

the Chinese Government, are not recognizable. These

electric buses run only upto the direction of theairport. For the further direction to the Bhaktapur

stands only the concrete stakes, hang tired

    remainders of the cables.

The second largest river, the Vishnumati, at the

west side of the old town of Kathmandu passing, is

green brown and stinky. For the holy river Bagmati

according to news report- rescue project starts in

order to secure for Pashupatinath, the holiest place in

Nepal, all-year at least a stream for the ritual baths.

Years old plans should take in action and come to be

true but Who believes it? In this present political

situation! I put Kathmandu Post to the side, forced

myself to move through the mass of the people in the

direction of the New Road, Tudhikhel, I found "Three

Wheeler" with the number 5 and chug along to the

    direction of Buddhanilkantha.
