Your chance to catch up on changes

A big thank you to all those who participated in our Cake Charity event last time, whether

bringing or buying. We raised nearly £30 and a cheque for £50 is on its way to the Friary

Drop in Centre on behalf of the EGDU3A.

It is time for our Open meeting on 10th

November, where we will be having displays from

lots of our groups. Come along and see what there is. Spread the word and bring a friend.

Ask any questions and see what there is to sign up for. See what the Outings group has to

offer. Discuss what groups you would like to see added…….

And come along to our next meeting at the Gamston Community Hall (nr Morrisons) on

10th

November, doors open at 1.45 for 2 pm.

LIVE, LAUGH & LEARN – BUT MOST OF ALL LAUGH !!!

Chris Shaw, Chairman

Things to do now that you are retired – misquotes from a book by Jane Garton

Write a book. Is there a novel or book lurking in the recesses of your or brain or in your

bottom drawer? Remember Mary Wesley (of The Camomile Lawn fame) had her first novel

published when she was 70. Our Writing for Fun Group shows we have a fair talent here.

Did You Know

Nottingham U3A Network has negotiated special rates for U3A members at The Broadway

Cinema for their Silver Screen Showing on Thursdays. Normal price is £5 but, if you show

your U3A membership card, it is £3.50 and includes tea or coffee and a biscuit.

If you need a membership card see Mike Brandt or at the meeting.

If you want the same over-the-counter medicines at the cheapest price – check the product

licence (PL) number on the side/back of box – same number = made at the same lab and

exactly the same tablets! PL 16028/0081 = Loratadine (Hay fever), PL 29831/0289 =

Your Interest Groups and Events

If you want to start a group contact one of the committee, below or at a meeting. Do you

have any ideas, especially if it is one you want to open? If you are not on email, please

call/text 0790 607 2251 for information, giving a name and contact number.

Singing for Fun - There are several members who have expressed an interest in joining a

Singing for Fun Group. Is there anyone reading this who might be willing to help? We

would like someone to play the piano if possible, although we have one or two options for

providing music to sing to. We have lots of interest and a keyboard but we need a few

members to help get this off the ground, and someone to lead us if possible.

Any ideas or suggestions or help would be gratefully appreciated.

Please contact Chris Shaw if you are interested - [email protected]

Lunch Club We are seeking to revamp the notions of a Lunch Club, perhaps a coffee and

cake??? – Different places where we might like to meet, where does a good meal, at a good

price, with a car park and bus route. Members swop details and, at each meeting, agree

where to meet next time. Would you like to be part of the group? Come and talk to us at

the next meeting. We will need leaders to be contact points, but all the group members to

help in arranging events. Contact Mike Groves at [email protected] or Chris

Shaw on [email protected]. We will give you all the help you need.

IT Group We need several members to lead the group (several to give help in specific

areas, as we are all skilled in some things and not in others). If you would like to help,

please contact Mike Groves- [email protected]

Active Groups

Antiques We originally met at the Meadow Covert and decided that our

definition of “Antiques” would be very wide and include anything old,

odd or recognisable from our youth or parents and grandparents lives.

At our last meeting on 2nd

November, we looked at ceramics and pottery,

including local Nottingham saltglaze. Our next meeting is on Wednesday 7th

December at

2pm, at Sue Ambler’s house (for address contact Chris on [email protected],

0790 607 2251, 0115 974 5512). Please let us know if you wish to come – if only for

checking that we have the space. Bring something of interest, preferably with a story

behind it, and or a book of information. We will be looking at silver and its hallmarks. I will

bring some internet information and books from the library to look at. See you there. All

welcome. In January we hope to look at an auction house in Nottingham. Look out for our

stall at the Open Meeting and sign up.

Art Appreciation We meet next on Wednesday 16th

November. We meet every third

Wednesday but there has been a lot of variation on that to accommodate members. Some of

the topics so far have been: David Hockney, The Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, JMW Turner,

Leonardo da Vinci, Raphael, Caravaggio, Grayson Perry. Recent visits to Djanogly Gallery

(David Jones) and Nottingham Castle Museum (Gordon Cheung). Current numbers 12).

Locations rotate through members' houses. Please contact Roy Townsend on

[email protected]

Book Group The next meeting is on 8th.November. The book is "A day in the life of Ivan

Denisovich" by Alexander Solzhenitsyn. New members very welcome, current numbers 12.

Please contact Roy Townsend on [email protected].

Bridge Group This group continues to gain strength and several members

who were complete beginners a year ago, can now play a hand of Bridge.

Several more people put their names down at the Open Meeting. Come and

met us at the Open Meeting. We meet every Tuesday afternoon. Please let

me know if you are going to attend as we need to know for numbers. Contact is Ann

Widdowson [email protected]

Painting We meet at 10 – 12 on the 3rd

Thursday of the month. Our next meeting is on

Thursday 17th

November, with no meeting in December. Come along to the Open meeting

and see our exhibition of what we have achieved in this first year. Our “homework” this

year has been spring, reds, blues, natural patterns, gardener’s delight, arches, harvest and

Through the Window as well as our long term or personal projects. Our thanks to

Josephine for her experience and guidance in this year. We are all very appreciative

and cannot believe the results and how much we have come on. Contact is

Josephine Cutts on [email protected].

Photography We meet at 2 pm on the third Monday of the month at the Gamston Village

Hall at present but please check this with Pauline on [email protected]. We are

all levels of ability, knowledge and equipment. We discuss different ways of improving our

artistic and technical skills, use of equipment, subjects and the processing of images, all

very relaxed, usually over a cup of tea or coffee. Special, additional small group meetings

for beginners or those who want to learn how to get the best from their own camera. Our

next meeting is on 21st

November.

Contact Pauline (as above) or Peter Allsopp 0115 921 5008, email at [email protected].

Scrabble We meet on the 3rd

Monday of the month, 2 – 4 pm, at members’ houses

on a rota basis. We play for fun but are always playing to win obviously. No record

of wins or scores is kept. Contact Sue Brittain on [email protected].

Spanish This is a Beginners group. We meet twice a month, normally on the second and

fourth Monday morning from 11.00 to 12.30 in the Meadow Covert pub. Please contact

Janet Fishel on [email protected]

Stamp Collecting Group I lead the stamp collecting group. Initially a Philately group was

requested but none of us have that level of knowledge. Instead we each have a collection of

stamps we collected when young or inherited hence "stamp collecting". There are 4 of us,

meeting occasionally. If interested, Contact John Todd on [email protected].

Walking Groups – Short and Medium Every month there are two walks a Medium (4 – 7

miles) and a Short Walk (2 – 3 miles), normally 3rd

Tuesday and 4/5th

Wednesday mornings

respectively. Our thanks to Jean Hudson. We have thoroughly enjoyed the walks and the

good company. If you would like to join us please contact Jean Hudson

[email protected] or ring 0115 923 1032.

Wine Tasting Group We meet on the 4th Wednesday of each month at 2pm

in Holme Pierrepont & Gamston Village Hall. Our group is very much

centred on the " Live,Laugh & Learn" approach without getting too

serious. Our next meeting is on the 23rd

November. Contact is Richard

Davis on 0115-9812970 or [email protected].

Writing for fun This Group has 9 members, which is quite a full house! Although it took

quite a while to get off the ground, it has certainly been worth it, and is very rewarding to

read and hear the contributions from our members. Such topics as Empty, Cold Callers,

The Sea, Procrastination and Dates have been written about. Our next meeting is on

Thursday, 1st

December, at a member’s home from 10.30 to 12. Contact is
