POSTGRADUATE COURSES: GENERAL INFORMATION

N.B. It is important that students know the general Universityregulations and the Faculty regulations that apply to their studies.

1.1 General University regulations

The general University regulations that apply to all students andfaculties are set out in the University Calendar Book.

1.2 Faculty regulationsFaculty regulations that relate specifically to the degrees offered by theFaculty of the Humanities are in this book.

1.3 Degrees offeredThe three levels of postgraduate qualifications offered by the Faculty ofthe Humanities are (1) Baccalaureus Artium Honores (B.A.Hons.),Baccalaureus Societatis Scientiae Honores (B.Soc.Sc.Hons.),(2) Magister Artium (M.A.), Magister Societatis Scientiae (M.Soc.Sc.), and(3) Philosophiae Doctor (Ph.D.).

1.4 General admission requirements to postgraduate coursesAs a general rule, students are admitted to postgraduate studies and toeach higher level of postgraduate study only if they fulfil the universityrequirements for registration, have completed the preliminary degreewith a mark of 60% or more, and are accepted to the course they wishto study by the Head of Department.

1.5 The B.A.Hons. and B.Soc.Sc.Hons. degreesUnless otherwise specified, the B.A.Hons. and B.Soc.Hons. degrees area one-year full-time or a two-year part-time study in a particular field. Ingeneral, the degrees require students to select and study courses forexamination, and to research and write a mini-thesis. In general, too, the

B.A.Hons. and B.Soc.Sc.Hons. form the first year of the two-yearstructured M.A./M.Soc.Sc. degrees. The specific details of each coursediffer, and students must acquaint themselves carefully with therequirements of the course they choose.

1.6 The M.A. and M.Soc.Sc. degreesStudents generally have a choice between (1) a two-year structuredM.A. and M.Soc.Sc. and (2) an M.A./M.Soc.Sc. by dissertation.

(1) The two-year, full-time, structured M.A./M.Soc.Sc. require studentsto select and study courses for examination, and to research and write amini-dissertation. In general, students can register for the structuredM.A./M.Soc.Sc. degree immediately after completing the B.A./B.Soc.Sc.

degree, with the B.A.Hons./B.Soc.Sc.Hons. degree as an "exit" at theend of the first year. (2) The M.A./M.Soc.Sc. by dissertation requiresstudents to write a substantial research essay on a topic agreed uponwith the Head of Department or a supervisor he appoints. In certaincourses a number of articles published in accredited journals isaccepted instead of a dissertation.

As the specific requirements of courses differ, students must acquaintthemselves carefully with the requirements of the course they choose.

1.7 The Ph.D. degreeUnless otherwise specified, a Doctorate is awarded to a M.A./M.Soc.Sc.graduate who writes a research thesis of noteworthy substance. Incertain courses a body of published or publishable articles is accepted

instead of a thesis. Students must acquaint themselves with the specificrequirements of their course.
