Dear Colleague, I would like to personally introduce you to our new RPL programme to you as an important development in our qualification portfolio. This offering will assist experienced aesthetic professionals to gain validation of the extensive skills and knowledge they have gained during their years in practice Equally, it is important to clarify the complexities and challenges that an RPL programme presents to us in terms of measuring different levels of proficiency and achievement in order to give exemptions from certain aspects of the course. In order to do this we have to ensure that prior experience and learning are adequately evidenced to satisfy the requirements of Ofqual, our awarding body CIBTAC, the JCCP qualification framework and CPSA practice standards. Since we first launched our level 4 qualifications in 2012, my Education Team and I have been extremely privileged to work with some of the most experienced aesthetic therapists and medical practitioners in the industry. While their standard of practice and knowledge have been clear to see, this has been very difficult to document in the structured manner required for an accredited qualification, without the full completion of the course programme. This has been partly due to the absence of formal theory and practical assessment processes, and the recording thereof, from short courses and supplier driven training. It is also due to the more extensive and exacting curriculum and practice standards developed by the JCCP and CPSA, against which we have to align and evidence every student’s competency. In designing this RPL programme, we have had to consider how best to achieve and evidence full compliance with the curriculum in the most effective and economical way. At the same time we have to prepare you for the rigour of the CIBTAC theory and practical examinations which will require very specific knowledge and understanding as well as a stringent adherence to best practice protocols. The delivery of an RPL programme which takes in to account each individual’s needs, levels of practice and, most importantly, does not compromise on standards,, is therefore a complex, skilled, time consuming and expensive process for training providers to offer . Indeed, for us, an RPL system shifts the balance from our student centred e-learning programmes to a more intensive and individually bespoke process of portfolio building and exam preparation Consequently, gaining a qualification via an RPL programme cannot be at a much lower price than completing the full course. However, it will mean that, the award of RPL will exempt you from some of the study and coursework involved, and so require less of your time. In this respect such a pathway does indeed save you money from the reduced amount of time you have to spend studying or away from your place of work, which will indeed potentially incur accommodation and travel costs. I hope that this introductory note, together with the following information on how our RPL programme is conducted, will help you to decide how you wish to proceed with your higher-level qualifications. As always my team will be very happy to advise you further rand we will all hope to welcome you onto your chosen pathway very soon Kind Regards

Sally Durant Director and Principal Sally Durant Education and Training

RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING (RPL)

STUDENT GUIDE INTRODUCTION WHAT IS RPL? RPL is a process that allows learners with work experience and/or other related learning, but without appropriate certification, to proceed directly to assessment. A learner may wish to gain a unit or qualification but may already possess some of the subject related:

• Skills • Knowledge • Experience • Understanding

The Regulatory arrangements for the Qualifications and Credit Framework define RPL* as follows: A method of assessment that considers whether a learner can demonstrate that they can meet the assessment requirements for a unit through knowledge, understanding or skills they already possess and do not need to develop through a course of learning. In the context of the RQF, the definition of RPL is quite specific and relates to assessment leading to the award of credit. Assessment for RPL is conducted against the learning outcomes and assessment criteria of a unit and is subject to exactly the same quality assurance requirements as any other kind of assessment within the RQF The use and application of RPL is of particular value to learners without formal qualifications, who are either in employment, preparing to enter or returning to employment. It enables them to gain all or part of a qualification on the evidence of their past achievements. RPL is a method of assessment [leading to the award of credit] that considers whether a learner can demonstrate that they can meet the assessment requirements for a unit through knowledge, understanding or skills they already possess and so not need to develop through a course of learning. RPL enables recognition of achievement from a range of activities using any valid assessment methodology. Provided that the assessment requirements of a given unit or qualification have been met, the use of RPL is acceptable for accrediting a unit, units or a whole qualification. Evidence of learning must be:

• Valid • Reliable
