RPL Foundation (40 hours) Acquire the fundamental knowledge and skill to effectively implement RPL. Learn about basic principles of RPL; how to develop learning outcomes, sound assessment practices, the portfolio and other methods of assessment; the role of the Advisor, Assessor and Facilitator; and how to put RPL into context for development of a credible system. RPL Practitioner (Advanced) (60 hours) Learn about adult learner focused organizations, innovation and quality in RPL, and how RPL supports adult learning and encourages organizational change. Explore the roles of the Advisor, Assessor, and Facilitator and the processes and practices to maintain quality in RPL systems. RPL Special Issues (50 hours) Learn about the key issues in RPL practice and new innovative practices and trends in the RPL field. Train the Trainer: Portfolio (30 hours) Learn about the development of a professional portfolio and the strategies for group facilitation of the portfolio development process. RPL Independent Study (40 hours) This course credit may be completed through the successful completion of relevant courses, workshops, seminars or other professional education related to RPL. Learners may choose a subject in their field of practice or interest, or may transfer in an approved credit from another post-secondary institution. RPL Practicum (80 hours) Gain hands-on experience through the 80-hour practicum. or RPL Capstone (80 hours) Demonstrate learning from work and life experience (i.e., mini- mum 2000 hours/2+ years) in the RPL field through a Capstone project or complete a RPL process to prove prior learning for the Practicum/Capstone Project component of the Certificate. RPL PRACTICES AT RED RIVER COLLEGERecognition of Prior Learning (RPL) involves the identification,

documentation, assessment and recognition of formal study and informal

learning gained through work and life experience. RRC evaluates and

grants credit for qualifying previous formal, informal and non formal

learning that is equivalent to College courses or programs.

This year’s RPL Annual Report (2015) is available on the RRC Anytime/

Anywhere Instructor Resource (AIR) site (air.rrc.ca/rpl). This report

provides annual RPL statistics, learner successes and details on the three

key RPL functions (advising, assessing and administering RPL systems)

critical for quality RPL practice.

In the past 5 years, 5,125 RPL course assessments have been conducted

for 3,100 learners. Assessments included: challenge processes such

as projects, exams, assignments; skill demonstrations; portfolios; and

assessment of courses from workplaces and other organizations. In

addition, over 6,650 credit transfers have been awarded for previous

formal learning.

In 2013-14: 1,148 RPL course assessments were conducted for 551 learners.

The success rate in RPL leading to credit recognition was high, at 96%. In

addition, 1,300 course credit transfers for formal learning were awarded.

The total number of learners accessing any type of RPL process, (including

transfer of credit), was 1,089 during the past year. Over 50% of these

learners received course credit for proven informal and non formal

learning gained through work and life experiences, including courses

completed through business, industry and other organizations.

In 2013-14, 64 RRC programs (full and part-time) conducted RPL

assessments. Top programs for RPL included: Civil Engineering Technology

Bridging Program, Early Childhood Education, Disability & Community

Support, Dental Assisting and Project Management.

Over 210 RPL assessments were completed for practicum, clinical, field

placements and co-op work experience courses in a wide variety of

programs. Learners were very successful in demonstrating their skills and

abilities for these courses.

Each year new RPL practices are introduced in College programs. In 2013-

14, a few programs incorporated RPL and the opportunity for learners to

fill gap learning via a short course, workshop/seminar, learning project etc.

In 2013-14, the RPL Academic Advisor in Enrolment Services provided

information, advising and orientations for 1,133 individuals, with 475

individuals receiving assistance to develop action plans, complete self-

assessments and prepare for assessments. Over 370 were individuals with

international credentials. Many more individuals received RPL advising

through program RPL advisors and faculty.

Socrates is an online RPL self-assessment and initial advising tool for

learners. They are able to explore previous learning by self-assessing

online to the course outcomes, connecting with an RPL advisor and

accessing RPL resources that assist with proving prior learning. Currently

Socrates is available in 10+ programs with new ones added each year.

RRC designates RPL “available” courses on the College’s website. An

RPL flag/icon RPL designates the courses in all College programs

which have RPL processes and assessments available. This RPL flag/

icon provides transparency for learners, faculty and staff and assists with

the quality RPL system implementation set out in the A14 RPL Policies

and Procedures. Detailed RPL information is available for learners on the

The RPL Strategic and Operational Plan (2012-2017) outlines the vision,

goals and outcomes for quality RPL practice. The RPL Annual Report

(2015) provides details on accomplishments related to 6 RPL Strategic

Plan goals: Communication, Quality in RPL, Staff Development, Systems

Coordination, RPL Resources and Costs, Partnerships. air.rrc.ca/rpl

RPL Learner Resource Guides and other resources for learners continue

to be developed. To date, there are over 140 RPL Resource Guides listed in

an inventory on RRC’s Portal website. These are appropriate for use in 350

courses in over 100 full-time and part-time programs.

RPL Services provides an annual RPL Symposium and monthly RPL@Noon

sessions throughout the year to share RPL practices, policies and current

projects/initiatives. The RPL Quick Reference Guide and 4 RPL Resource

videos cover key information on practices, policies and resources for

faculty and staff air.rrc.ca/rpl.

RRC’s School of Continuing Education offers the RPL Practitioner

Certificate program for advanced learning in RPL systems and practices

rrc.ca/plp. RRC is a national leader in providing training courses and

professional development for RPL advisors, assessors and facilitators.

To date, 745 practitioners from Manitoba, Canada and other countries

have completed the introductory RPL Foundation course. In the past

2 years, learners from Manitoba, British Columbia, Ontario, North West

Territories and Prince Edward Island completed courses in the RPL

Practitioner Certificate.

The RPL section on the Anytime/Anywhere Instructor Resource site is the

“go to” resource site for faculty and staff. The RPL Strategic Plan, along

with research studies, Annual Reports, resources, policies, procedures &

processes are all on AIR air.rrc.ca/rpl
