The campus has been buzzing this week as our students arrived to begin classes for 2015. 83 new students joined the Primary school and 81 students joined the Secondary school this week. As I have walked around the campus visiting classes, I have been very pleased with the way all students have quickly fallen into the routines of BDC. For some, coming to a new school is daunting. Before the start of Term, one new school mum told me that her boys were ‘super excited but super nervous’. BDC is a place where we quickly try to allay the fears students might have about starting at a new school. Primary students are quickly integrated into their classes, while Secondary students meet in smaller tutor groups with a tutor, as well as having a Year Coordinator working with them. There is a palpable air of enthusiasm and anticipation as we start our new academic year. We will work closely in partnership between teachers, students and parents and carers to nurture a positive learning experience for all of our students. Please feel free to discuss your child’s progress at school with their teachers, Year Coordinators, one of the Directors, or with the Head of Secondary or Primary. We look forward to a very positive and productive year ahead. SHADE SAILS In December, a storm destroyed our two main shade sails in the Primary and Secondary areas of the school. FLOOD RESPONSE In the case of days of heavy, flooding rains, parents and carers are advised to keep their children at home if there is a chance that their homes will be cut off by flood waters. On those days, we monitor the BOM and SES websites, the tide information, and communicate regularly with bus companies. If there is the likelihood of either North Boambee Road being cut by flood waters, or roads in outlying towns being closed, we will alert parents by SMS message. In those cases, you will be asked to come and collect your children as soon as possible. We will tell you first that the school must close, and then inform our student body. It is essential that we have your correct mobile phone numbers for our SMS messaging to be efficient. Please advise Mrs Lyn Mercer of any updates to those numbers. I wonder what 2015 has in store for each of us? For those who are new families to BDC I’d like to introduce myself. My name is Reverend Marion Tanfield (Rev T) and I have the wonderful pleasure of being your Chaplain, Reverend David Morgan ably assists me in the Chaplaincy department. The Chaplaincy office is at the end of the verandah of the main administration building, please pop in to say hello or drop by for a cuppa as we’d love to get to know you. I’d like to welcome all students and families of the BDC community. I hope that your holiday was fantastic and that you had some time to rest and recharge your batteries.

Today I spent time in primary welcoming all of our students and it was wonderful seeing old friends gather together with those who are new to our college and look after one another. The Kindergarten students look so cute in their uniforms and had lots of fun getting to know one another. For new parents to our college these first few days may appear daunting to you but be reassured that after a few short weeks everything will become the norm as you settle into routine.

Over the holidays I subscribed to a website for meditations of inspiration and have been receiving them daily. Today’s message from Richard Rohr made me sit up and take note. “I guess that I’d just accepted that creation happened and I never really thought that it’s a process that’s still happening, even though everyday I marvel at and give thanks for our Creators amazing masterpiece that’s all around me and in fact includes me! You only have to watch the ebb and flow of the waves crashing onto the beach coming in and going out to realize that creation evolves every single day.”

From the beginning until now, the entire creation as we know it has been groaning in one great act of giving birth. - Romans 8:22

“Creation did not happen once by a flick of the Divine hand, and now it’s slowly winding down--which is what we’ve assumed for most of history. Creation, in fact, is a process that is still happening and winding up, and even better, we’re in on it! We are a part of this endless creativity of God. Talk about inclusion and how everything belongs! In other words, YOU matter and YOU make a difference!”

As part of the family here at Bishop Druitt College everyone of you matters to us, so if there is anything that you wish to discuss or just need some clarification on something, our doors are always open to you and we can certainly point you in the right direction.

Throughout our journey may we grow and reap the good harvest, as we too discover Jesus together.

Peace

PasToral carewelcome To The PasToral care TeamMy name is Mrs Sue O’Connor and I will be the Acting Director of Pastoral Care for this upcoming year.

Our work in pastoral care acknowledges that to be a successful learner a child needs to be happy; to be confident and creative, a child needs to be secure and engaged; and to be a good global citizen, each child needs to feel worthy and empowered. Thus, wellbeing is intrinsic to learning. The pastoral care team at Bishop Druitt College focuses on each child’s social and emotional wellbeing as a key factor, arguably the most important factor, in their successful transition from child to adult. This is done through the house system, tutor groups, personal development programs, outdoor education programs, community service, pastoral programs and behaviour management; all of which I will discuss in upcoming newsletters.

I’d like to take this opportunity to introduce the key members of the pastoral care team:We have 2 Chaplains – Marion Tanfield and David Morgan. The chaplaincy seeks to serve the whole of Bishop Druitt College • during both the ordinary and the crisis times of life. Practical support, pastoral care, spiritual guidance and personal assistance are available at all times. Our 3 Counselors, Tony, Jane and Saskia play a pivotal role in the well being of our students. They are tasked with identifying and • understanding issues facing students; initiating and managing preventative mental health programs and intervention, as well as assisting teachers and students to resolve issues and problems.

Our pastoral structure relies heavily on the work done by the year coordinators, assistant year coordinators, stage coordinators and heads of house. Their roles collectively are to be responsible for all matters relating directly to the year group, the overall pastoral care of students in the year and for promoting and fostering the development of a positive and cohesive sense of community amongst students and staff. The year and stage coordinators work closely with and provide support for their team of tutors and class teachers.

Tutor and classroom teachers are the one person to make contact with our students EVERY day. They are the person who will notice any changes – good or bad and respond accordingly.

My role as Director of Pastoral Care is to be responsible for the effective management and care of the students of the college. To oversee pastoral programs and the general well being of students from K-12. It is to support our pastoral team and liaise with all staff, students and families as the need arises.

Communication is the key to implementing successful pastoral care for our students. Often an email or phone call from parents regarding their sons or daughters is the only way we will know that they need help. On the college website you will find the names, emails and phone extensions of the people in the above positions relevant to your child’s year or stage. Please do not hesitate to contact us should the need arise.

From The head oF secondary

To our returning students and families, welcome back and to those who are new, welcome. We have had a smooth start to the year and I hope 2015 will be a thoroughly enjoyable and productive for everyone.

We have three new staff in the secondary school Mrs Kathleen Collin joins us as Director of Learning and Teaching, Mr Tom Murtha has joined the PDHPE faculty and Mrs Susan Powers has joined the LRC for a year on exchange from Colorado. As well as this, Mr Paul Driscoll, Ms Katherine Wyndham and Ms Shelley Spagnolo have returned to teach with us this year.

Last week the teaching staff spent two days preparing for the return of students. On the Friday we spent time as a secondary staff talking about the nature of our professional practice. This is going to be a major focus in the secondary school this year as we look at ways we can build our professional knowledge and transfer this to classrooms to improve learning for students. One focus for the year will be the way we make judgments in class about what students have learned and how we then adapt our teaching to improve their understanding. As well as this, we will also continue to explore the ways technology can improve learning.

On Wednesday 4th February we will run an information evening for Year 7 parents starting at 5.30. The aim of the evening is to give parents information about how the secondary schools works, what support is available to students and parents and to talk about the upcoming Outdoor Education camp. We look forward to meeting as many Year 7 parents as possible.

On the same evening our Parents and Friends are running a ‘Showcase BDC’ for all parents. This will be a chance for many of our teachers and parents to talk to other parents about the many opportunities at BDC. I look forward to meeting many new parents.

Secondary Schools tax file Number program

The abovementioned program will not continue in 2015. This means that school TFN forms will no longer be processed from 1 January 2015.

The Australian Taxation Office in partnership with Australia Post is making it easier for individuals to apply for a TFN. Students can now apply for a TFN online and have their identity verified through an interview at a participating Australia Post Office. Applying online is the fastest and most convenient way for students to get a TFN. More information on applying online can be found at ato.gov.au by searching for ‘QC27248’ Students who are unable to visit a participating Australia Post office will need to complete the application form Tax file number - application or enquiry for individuals form (NAT 1432). More information about lodging this form can be found at ato.gov.au by searching for ‘QC22604’

The ATO will continue working with teachers to educate students about tax and superannuation. The curriculum resource Tax, Super & You is a free, easy to use, online educational resource aligned to the school curriculum of each state and territory. This resource can be accessed at taxsuperandyou.gov.au

Upcoming eventsTuesday 3rd February – TVET meeting at lunchtime in the Careers Lounge.• Wednesday 4th March – The University Roadshow at Southern Cross University. Year 12 students throughout the region are • given the opportunity to meet with representatives from Southern Cross University, the University of New England and Charles Sturt University to learn general information regarding university applications, early entry schemes, scholarships, costs and accommodation. In addition, they can obtain course specific information.

Great to kick off another year, and yes, public speaking is still happening at BDC! The opportunities range from participating in the inter-house public speaking competition, the junior and senior events sponsored by the Department of Education, and informal classes run after school on the Thursday of Week B. So if your child is brilliant at debating every point with you over the dinner table, or if your child would like to improve his/her ability to stand and speak in front of others, then, of course, your child is definitely the one who should turn up!

In association with Academy Travel, BDC is offering students the opportunity to travel to Italy and Greece for 16 days in 2016 (during January school holidays). The tour is specifically designed to address the Ancient History HSC course, but would also be a highly valuable experience for students of Italian or Visual Arts. The tour is open to all students in Years 8-11 (2015), even as a cultural experience for those who are not studying or intending to study, in these subject areas. Ms Kiemski and myself conducted a similar tour in 2013 with 18 students and it was a truly wonderful experience for everyone involved. Ancient History students in particular were able to draw on their experiences come exam time and give genuine context to their studies. For more detailed information please see the flyer at the end of the newsletter. We are looking to hold an information evening early in Term 1 2015 and it would be very helpful if interested students/parents could complete the Expression of Interest (no-obligation) form and return to Ms Kiemski or Mr Bennett or email your interest (or any questions) to [email protected] or [email protected]

From The head oF PrimaryI hope you all had a wonderful, restful holiday. I saw many relieved faces this week as parents delivered their children to their new classrooms. As I spoke to our students over the last few days I was told many times how happy they were to return to school and it certainly gladdened my heart. The Kindergarten children arrived yesterday, some beaming while others perhaps realising the enormity of entering the first of thirteen years of schooling!

Karin Lisleassistant principal (head of primary)

TalenT develoPmenT in The Primary The Bishop Druitt College community is committed to the ideal that every student has a right to learn and to reach their potential. The college upholds the belief that all students can learn and graduates of Bishop Druitt College have the skills to be self-directed and independent life long learners. This includes those students who possess a high level of cognitive, affective, or creative capacities.

Philosophically and ideally, all teachers at Bishop Druitt College strive to differentiate the curriculum in accordance with individual student needs. However, the college recognises that for students who have been identified as being academically talented, alternative programming and/or teaching may assist them in achieving their academic potential.

The primary school identifies students through nominations from teachers, parents and students and small group extension and enrichment activities are run with the Talent Development teacher Mr Patrick Galvin. These programs focus on Mathematics and English and use a combination of individual and group work with students.

The Primary Creative Thinkers’ Group is also established for students who have demonstrated potential but have not been ableto consistently realise their potential in the classroom.

If your child is in Years 3 to 6 you may nominate them for inclusion in the Talent Development or Creative Thinking groups.

Please complete the Parent or Caregiver Nomination Form which can be found in the Talent Development Policy and accessed from the college website. http://www.bdc.nsw.edu.au/assets/pdf/Policies/Talent-Development-Program.pdf

Return forms to Primary Administration for the attention of Mr Patrick Galvin by Friday 6 February. For more information please contact Mr Galvin by email [email protected]

We have a very busy first few weeks of school ahead. Next Tuesday we invite parents to the Parent Information Evening starting at 5.30pm in the College Theatre. After a brief address, you will be asked to attend the classes of your children to find out what is happening in each grade. If you cannot make it on the night, a handbook will be sent home on request.

On Wednesday night the P & F is presenting a Showcase event in the Branson Centre and I encourage you all to attend. There are over thirty stalls represented, showing you some of the fantastic things we do at this school. The P & F are providing nibbles and drinks so you can peruse the stalls and spend time talking to staff and other parents.

The next Wednesday 11 February the Senior Primary Swimming Carnival will be held at the Coffs Harbour Memorial Pool. It would be lovely for you to attend with your children if possible, it is usually such a great day of fellowship as well as competition. On Friday 13 February the Junior Primary swimming carnival will be held at Sawtell Pool. Again you are invited to come along to cheer on your children.

As a result of the Canteen survey many parents completed, there will be a revamping of the canteen menu over the next terms. You will notice some changes already when you read through the Term 1 menu and we are looking for canteen helpers to assist Ben in preparation of fresh food in the canteen. Of course to make our changes successful, we need the support of parents to help in the canteen. You may only have an hour to spare, or just one morning, but every little bit helps. There is no need to serve, but we do need assistance with preparation. Please contact Ben on [email protected] if you can offer assistance.

I have been catching up with parents this week, if you have any questions or concerns, please make an appointment to see me at any time.

Dale Condonhead of music K-12

Welcome Mr Peter Hodges to the music faculty as Music Administrator. He is well known to many of us already and, more particularly, to the music theatre enthusiasts. Please pop in to the faculty and say hello to Peter. I want to take this opportunity to thank Mrs Michelle Egan for her work over the past 3 years. Michelle has worked very hard to support the growth of the music faculty in recent years. Mr John Mostyn leaves us as tutor of guitar. We are working on a replacement for John.

Yellow forms for continuing instrumental music students should have been returned in late 2014. If you have not returned your yellow form and your child is continuing, please get in touch with the music office. If you would like your child to commence instrumental music lessons, please pop over to the music office and have a word with Mr Hodges or myself.

The 2015 Instrumental Music Studies Handbook is available for collection. This document contains all the information that you need to know about instrumental music lessons at Bishop Druitt College. Music staff have been preparing timetables and will have been in touch with you by now. I have asked that the music timetables be posted on the music noticeboard by Monday 2nd February.

It is with some excitement that we return to see some additional spaces in our building. These spaces make life much more pleasant for staff and students, in a very busy faculty such as ours. Come over and have a look at these changes.

Our ensembles program resumes in Week 2. A program for rehearsals is nearly ready to be published. Most ensembles will meet on the same days and times as last year. With the change in evenings for the secondary staff meeting to Wednesday, I am looking at an alternative time for the Secondary Choir to meet.

I extend an invitation to any current Friends of Music to come to the BDC Showcase, in the Branson Centre on Wednesday 4th February and show your support for the music faculty. This event is designed to welcome and to inform new parents or any parents interested in being involved in ‘friends of’ groups. 2015 is looking like a very busy year for Friends of Music. There is also a Year 7 Parent Information Evening on this night where I will be giving a brief overview of what we offer musically.

A reminder to senior music students that we are going to the Glasshouse at Port Macquarie on Wednesday 11th February. We are attending the Bravissimo performance of exemplary HSC musical work from the 2014 year. Music students have been given information notes regarding this terrific excursion. Please contact Mrs Day or me for further details.

Welcome to the 2015 school year. It is shaping up to be a very exciting year in the music faculty, with many things happening and a huge tour to Japan in December.

I will be handing out basketball player registration forms during next week for both Primary and Secondary. These forms can also be found on the College website under Our Community/Sport/Basketball. Students from Yr 1 to Yr 10 are eligible to join teams and new players are always welcome.

Please remember when registering you child that teams also need coaches, managers and parent helpers to assist the players. Please fill out page 2 of the form if you can assist in any way. There are always experienced parents willing to teach new comers how to do these roles.

If you are interested in coaching a team, CHBA is running a coaching course on Sunday 1 March, BDC will cover the $100 cost of this course for any parents/carers that take on the role of coach in 2015. Please email me if you are interested.

The Secondary competition starts with a round robin day on Friday 13 Feb and Primary will commence with the same format on Saturday 14 Feb.

As with basketball, there will be sign up days for rugby and football in both Secondary and Primary. These sports both have representative games during Term 1 in some age groups and team selections and training needs to be under way before we can take the field. Primary representative teams are selected from Years 5 & 6.

BDC has the opportunity to trial in a range of sports towards selection into a North Coast Independent Schools (NCIS) team or trial directly at NSWCIS level. There are costs involved in these trials and sports are played at a high level of competition. I will advertise in the weekly newsletter what sports are coming up and if students are interested they need to come and speak to Mr Kelleher or myself about nominating for a sport.

The first nominations due for 2015 are for the All Schools Triathlon (NSWCIS) and more information for this event can be found at:http://www.aisnsw.edu.au/Services/CIS/Pages/ViewSportDetails.aspx?sportid=1f190f43-e7e4-e011-818e-005056b841f8

Please email [email protected] any outstanding sporting achievements by students so they can be acknowledged in the weekly newsletter.
