CATESOL Chapters
Ways that members participate in the organization:• Annual – conference committee• Regionals – Northern, LA, and San Diego –
also, a conference committee• Chapters – meet throughout the year to plan
events and build a local grassroots network of ESL professionals
CATESOL Chapters
• 12 Chapters – five in Northern California, five in Southern California, and two in Nevada
• When you join CATESOL, you automatically become a member of your local Chapter (except for most of LA County and the far northern counties of California)
• Some Chapters are more active than others
CATESOL Chapters
• At least two events a year (typically, one in the fall, one in the spring)
• Annual elections• Chapters help fulfill the mission, purposes,
and goals of CATESOL

• Mission – CATESOL's mission is to promote excellence in education for English language learners and a high-quality professional environment for their teachers. CATESOL represents teachers of English language learners throughout California and Nevada, at all levels and in all learning environments.

CATESOL strives to:• improve teacher preparation and provide
opportunities with further professional expertise• promote sound, research-based education policy
and practices• increase awareness of the strengths and needs of
English language learners• promote appreciation of diverse linguistic and
cultural backgrounds

Goals of CATESOL• Goal #1 - Support high-quality teacher
preparation and professional development• Goal #2 - Promote sound public educational policy• Goal #3 - Improve articulation among
programs across all levels• Goal #4 - Promote quality working conditions and
employment standards for English language teachers

implementation of educational standards and the means to enable English language learners to meet them
• Goal #6 - Increase awareness of the strengths and needs of English learners and encourage respect for linguistic and cultural diversity

Coordinator• Oversees all Board activities, including meetings and workshops• Trains the Coordinator-Elect• Support all committeesCoordinator-Elect• Helps Coordinator with workshop responsibilities• Fills in for Coordinator in their absencePast Coordinator• Coordinates elections for new cabinet members• Advises on all matters pertaining to the ChapterNote: Becoming OC Coordinator is a 3-year commitment.

Secretary• Takes minutes at all Chapter meetings and emails
them to the Chapter members• Maintains Chapter roster and communicates meeting
reminders to BoardTreasurer• Keeps Chapter budget • Handles reimbursements• Prepares monthly financial reports on all Chapter costs

Historian (Currently the Secretary is acting as Historian)• Takes photographs at Chapter workshops and events• Maintains and organizes Chapter archives on Google
Drive and FacebookMembership Chair (Position open)• Recruits new members • Represents OC Chapter at workshops and conferences
(e.g. manning Chapter table at the regional and annual conferences)
• Coordinates social events for the Chapter

Graduate Student Representative (TESOL Club President at CSU, Fullerton)• Acts as liaison with student groups in graduate programs in
TESOL including, but not limited to, CSUF, CSULB, CSULA, USC, and UCI
Level Chairs• Represent the interests of the level membership and
distribute timely information as to legislative activity pertaining to level– Elementary/Secondary, Adult, Community College,
College/University, and IEP

New Members• New members are considered general
volunteers. General volunteers may volunteer in any committee and run for the position of Secretary and Treasurer even as new members.

To become Board members, volunteers must:• Have a CATESOL membership • Attend meetings consistently and volunteer at
Chapter events for 6 months* Only Board members have perks like discounts to workshops and may run for the position of Coordinator-Elect.
