Hypertension

CaseA 50 years old female came to OPD as her blood pressure was found to be elevated in the nearby medical hall. She has no complains. On repeated examination her blood pressure was persistently 160/100 mmHg. You advice her to start anti hypertensive but she resists saying that once started she may need to continue for long time.

Learning objectives1. Guidelines of JNC 82. When to start antihypertensive?3. What medicine to start with?4. Possible complications if left untreated.

Guiding Questions1. Which investigations would be useful?2. What will be your approach to this patient?3. What medical and social issues are there?4. How would you demonstrate a holistic approach to this patient?

Learning ProcessDiscuss the above mentioned question with local preceptor in relation to learning objectives. VCR discussion will be held on following areas.

Questions that has risen in the discussion with local preceptor. (Please send it by Wednesday) Students should come up with cases and should lead discussion in first hour. White board should be used for unsolved queries. In second hour facilitator will lead the discussion.
