3. Mr. V Steve Richard, alumni and 2009 batch student of our department becane the first

successful Marine Engineer from the country on a voyage to North Pole.

Richard is the Second Engineer on board Arc7LNG Carrier Eudard Toll and he transited

the wilderness and the harsh cold environment of the Arctic to the Yamal Peninsula in

the northwest of Siberia, Russia. The maiden voyage as he recalled is an adventure of a

lifetime (and a nightmare) to the North Pole en-route the Arctic Ocean to the Yamal

Peninsula in the Arctic Circle.

The ice-clad journey through the dark and bitter cold of minus 35-40 degrees witnessed

no sunrise and only ice bergs, Arctic foxes, polar bears and the northern star, which

lights up the night sky with varied colours-Aurora Borealis. No vessels transit the route

during this part of the year as the ice is thick and the visibility poor.

“It is a dream by every seafarer to cross the Bering Strait and sail through the Northern

Sea Route and Steve Richard is amongst the fortunate ones. It has been the coldest and

the longest night of my life lasting three weeks and my new year is yet to see a sunrise,”

said Richard during his visit to the college.

10. NEW INITIATIVES

VVCE has collaborated with Career Launcher’s parent company CL Educate to foster the

culture of research and innovation.

As part of the collaboration they will be helping the fourth semester students to

understand the importance of research, identify research topics through literature

survey and to conduct investigative studies. The students are expected to publish their

finding in a reputed indexed international journal/conference and also they can file

patents for their work.

Dr Mangesh Lodhe is deputed as the Research Mentor for the department. He has

completed his doctoral degree from IIT, Madras in the field of Ceramics and Composite

Materials.
