    COURSE DESCRIPTION

The course consists of 2 main components,Dental Morphology and Occlustion both of whichare provided by the RDS Department in the firstsemesters respectively during the first year of theDDS program. It is a course, equivalent to 4 credithours. 132 contact hours

    DENTAL ANATOMY & MORPHOLOGY

This component is designed to provide the student with thebasic elements of tooth morphology as an essential pre-

requisite for other dental courses. The course compriseslectures and practical sessions. Using wax, students restorethe missing coronal surfaces of complete tooth models by awax carving technique. This is designed to reinforce the

theoretical knowledge gained in the lectures, as well ascontribute towards the development of manual dexterity, askill which is essential in the practice of dentistry.Identification of natural tooth specimens forms a significantpart of the practical component of the course .

At the end of the 1st semester the studentsshould be able to:

    1. Apply the terms and expressions usedin dental anatomy and morphologywith proficiency.

    2. Record teeth, using different notations, butwith particular emphasis on the methodrecommended by the International Dental

    Federation (FDI).

    3. Understand the relationship of teeth to oneanother as well as the relation between theadjacent and opposing teeth, and understandthe Mechanics of Mandibular Movement.

    4. Understand the alignments, occlussionand the self-protective feature of the dentition.

    5. Distinguish the morphological characteristicsof different kinds of teeth. Thus, there aretraits which separate the teeth of the upper from the lower arches, the molars from theincisors and the first molar from the secondmolar.

    6. Develop his/her manual skills by carving inwax the different missing surfaces of all teeth.

    7. Restore in casting wax, the missing surfaces

in Dentoform by carving to normal anatomicaland morphological features.

    8. Drawing to scale two dimensions of all teethfollowing the lectures outline, using the table of measurements provided.

Each student should collect natural teeth, cleanand keep them in 10% formaline. Fail to do thiswill affect his/ her progress and grades.

    * At birth:

No teeth are visible in the mouth. However, many teeth at various stages of development arefound in the jaws.

The post natal period of development span, isabout two and half years for deciduous dentition

    The Incisors:

    * Have got a flat thin edge Incisaledge which is knife -like

    s o

    * The main function is to cut Incise food by shearing action betweenupper and lower incisors teeth.

    The Premolars

    * Have got two cusps to give usthe ability of tearing food andhelping in mastication

    so

    * They are supposed as small

    molars

    36/42

    The Molars

    * Have a broader occlusal surfaces withmany cusps four -five

    s o

    * They are helping in :

The function of teeth can besummarize as follows:

    1. They helps in mastication of foodIncisors for cutting

    Canines of tearing

Premolars and Molars for cruching, grinding and masticating

    2. They are important for proper speech anterior teeth.
