August was a very busy month. Monthly dinner at Evans Kitchen was put on by The Hoover’s. It was a sell out dinner and everyone seemed to enjoy themselves. Food was good and there was plenty to eat. Thank you, Jan and Herb Hoover.

Historic’s in Monterey was a week long event. Many of our members attended and even worked this event. If you were one of the lucky ones that got on Bob Jacobson’s work list you got free passes to most of the events. Linda McMahen and Dianna Leight put on a wonderful cocktail party Thursday night at Pacific Gardens Inn in Pacific Grove. Thank you girls! Friday night was the unveiling of the Infiniti M. It was a gorgeous car; wish I had one in my garage. I would like to thank Bob Jacobson for getting Jerry and I on the guest list for the Infiniti M unveiling. Saturday night was the art show with many artist displaying some of there work done for Pebble Beach. Sunday was the Pebble Beach Tour d’ Elegance. It was the most elegant car show I have ever been to. There were over 150 cars dating back to the 1900’s.

There were Bentley’s, Packards, Bugatti’s, Morgan’s, Jaguar’s, Rolls-Royce’s to name a few. You could see yourself in the paint jobs. I think they had them freshly painted and then wrapped them in bubble wrap to keep them perfect. I stuck my head into a few cars and inhaled the smell of fresh leather. What an experience!!! Thank you to Jon and Janet Kramer for giving us their extra tickets so we may go to the concours on Sunday. Motorcycles were also featured this year at Pebble Beach Tour d’ Elegance, many dating back to the early 1900’s. Jerry was in his glory.

I understand two of our members received awards, congratula-tions to Judy Hanna for winning 2nd place in her 1962 356 T6B Porsche in the Tuesday Concours in Carmel and Bill Keegan took 3rd place in his 1987 930 Porsche. Special thanks go to Jim and Linda McMahen for preparing these cars for the Concours.

We only have a few events scheduled in September and October. If anyone would like to do a tour or have some idea for an event, please give me a call.

Drifting Back – October 2009by Larry Wilson

30 Years Ago (October 1979) The full-page DRIFTER ad for the October 4 Dinner Meeting at Zorba’s had this irresistible hook: “We will be entertained by Nick Zorba performing his famous Table Dance, and Princess Samyra will present her exotic bellydance.” Wow! No word on the turnout, but it had to be HUGE. Offered a few days later, on October 7, was the SVR High Speed Wine Tour. Tourmasters Jim McDade and Paul Bates promised entrants they would taste their way through at least three wineries in the Napa/Sonoma valleys. Helmets and nomex not required. Trische Robertson said it followed the most unique and longest route she’d ever taken to Sonoma.

On October 21, SVR presented Last Chance II, a Zone 7 auto-cross at Cal Expo with Larry Wilson as chairman. The last event of the 1979 series attracted 78 drivers, but the only championship still up for grabs was for Class 19, modified six-cylinder cars, and the protagonists were Emmett Wilder (Redwood Region) and Jim McDade (SVR), both in 914-6 race cars. It was a winner-take-all deal, and when the dust cleared, McDade was still looking for 4-thousandths of a second. Yup, ol’ Jim clocked 40.539 seconds, Emmett 40.535. After the last run, 48 workers helped Jim drown his sorrows by finishing off three cases of beer. They were: Jack and June Samples, Sally Weddle, Dwight and Linda Mitchell, Trische Robertson, Kerry Creasy, Pat and Larry Wilson, Stan Breyfogle, Mel Pasta, Dave and Debbie Marek, Robin Stone, Jim Chandler, George and Nona Morley, Ted Fukushima, Scott and Kathy Peebles, Jim and Joyce Karver, Michael and Mary Peters, Larry and Gloria Dunn, Fred and Nancy Myron, C.C. and Launa Craig, Rich Farlinger, Nancy McDade, Jim and Sheila McDade, Darrel and C.C. Overstreet, Paul Bates, Rik and Let-tie Larson, Kirk Bradford, Ted and Diane Colbert, Howard and Marlene Souza, Glenn and Laquita Hills, Dave Blanchard, and Mike Willis.20 Years Ago (October 1989) September 30 - October 1, Carrera de Sierra XII: a two-day time and distance rally departing Fillmore’s in Sacramento with a route through Timbucktoo, Smartville, Loma Rica, Dobbins, Log Cabin, Bassetts, Vinton, Chilcoot, Sparks, Virginia City, Cave Rock, Paynesville, Markleeville, and Jackson, with Phillip Marks as organizer, John Clever as rallymaster, and a worker crew consist-ing of Rik Larson, Mike Willis and family, Larry and Pat Wilson, Ted and Kay Robinson, Sally and Ron Boeck, Jason Sorenson, Ron and Hazel Rule, Jill Lundstrom, Bob and Mary Siles, and Ray Seamans. Thirty-three rally teams competed for awards in four classes, and the SVR team of Tina and John Murphy won the Beginner Class with only 292 penalty points. Other SVR teams were Ron Boeck and Rod Sorenson (5th, Expert Equipped class), Harvey and Connie Cain (2nd, Expert Unequipped class), George and Nona Morley (7th, Expert Unequipped class), Allen and Dolores Weddle (2nd Novice class), Jim and Joyce Karver (6th, Novice class), and others in Beginner class; Jim McMahen and Suzanne Plantz (3rd), Tom and Tambra Kroetz, (4th), Randy Vidmar and Pals (9th), Dave and Dolores Johnson (10th), and Robert Dennison and Elizabeth Carr (11th). On Saturday near Loyalton, the team of Dave and Dolores Johnson came through the checkpoint in EXACTLY the WRONG direction of travel. The Second Annual SVR Halloween Costume Party and Dinner Dance, October 28 at the Clarion Hotel, chaired again by Bob Peake, was kicked off, literally, by 10 raisins (Ron and Sally Boeck, Allen and Dolores Weddle, Mark and Starla Hirst, Fred and Fran Seigner, and C.C. Craig and Karen Mangin) all dancing to the tune, “I Heard It On The Grapevine.” Bob and Beth Jacobson, disguised as Batman and The Joker, won first place in the costume

contest. Greg and Cyndee Peart appeared as white flower pots and placed second (they were married a few days earlier, October 6th). October odds and ends: Jim McMahen and his 1979 911SC was the Best of Show winner at the October 22nd SVR Second Annual Wash ‘n’ Shine Concours. By letter dated October 10, 1989, GRASSROOTS MOTORSPORTS editor, Marjorie J. Suddard, notified SVR that THE DRIFTER had won Class 3 (251-500 circulation) in their nationwide 1989 sportscar club newsletter competition.10 Years Ago (October 1999) Jim and Linda McMahen presented their October 15 Napa Valley Wine Tour and Picnic, and in the spirit of the season, each driver received a miniature pumpkin. With a different twist, nine cars started the tour, eleven finished. The group stayed together nicely until, at the first rest stop, Tom Kroetz convinced Bob Jacobson they should swap cars for the next leg. As the group departed, Tom couldn’t figure out how to start Bob’s car. Bob waited. Tom finally succeeded, but the other cars were gone - out of sight. Then, Jim McMahen radioed they he had encountered more Porsches. Part of the group, the Pearts and Hanna/Swenson, broke off and joined McMahen, and after a few minutes they realized they had joined a Diablo Region Tour. By some miracle, all remnants of the original tour including the Murphys re-joined just before reaching S. Anderson Winery for tasting champagne. Rutherford Hills Winery and a picnic was next. The rest of the tour was uneventful, but fun. Held at the Fair Oaks home of Mike and Sue Ambrozewicz, the October 23 Concours, Charity Auction, and Barbeque with Tom and Jude Sisson as co-chairs and with concours help from Kent Brandon, was a great event with something for everyone and with a noble purpose. First was the concours in the Ambrozewicz front yard. Just one class with awards to the top three. Several tied scores were broken by which car had more gas in its tank. Alan and Diane Nishimoto came in first followed by the tied duo of Dennis and Judy Stettner and Bud and Mary Ann Behrens. With more gas, Bud and Mary Ann got the nod. The picnic went on in the back yard, simultaneously. Herb Hoover, Jeff and Kim Kinder, and Tambra Kroetz brought tables for the auction items. Shade tents and umbrellas were scrounged by Judy Hanna and Rich Swenson, Mike Ambrozewicz, and Rik Larson. The nimble fingers of Sally Boeck rumbled on her laptop as she recorded all winning auction bids. Kirk Bradford and Larry Wilson were auctioneers, and when the dust cleared, the club had clocked over $2,600 for the Sacramento Affiliate of the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer foundation. Is this a good club, or what?Phil Lawrence organized the October 30 Costume Bowling, at Country Club Lanes, and nine costumed keglers showed up: Jude and Tom Sisson as Elvira and a vampire, Herb and Jan Hoover as a magician and Miss Kitty, Phil Lawrence as El Gringo, Kent Brandon as a hippy and Cindy McKenzie as a baseball, and Larry and Mary Clark as the Pope and an angel. Larry Clark received the best bowling score award. But, how do you launch a bowling ball dressed as a baseball?

MARK started his collection with the purchase of a 1930's Wayne Gas Pump at a neighborhood garage sale. Since then he has added a Diner, Barber Shop,

Gas Station, General Store and Old Time Movie Theater.

Look Hard! Don't think the Car that crashed into the Garage and the little problem he had with the Cessna was a dream. Who knows, maybe they got

their License anyway? This crazy collection of Memorabilia is alive and growing all the time. OK, so maybe he is a little Wackey, but you have to say if Rippley's Believe it or Not and Multiple National TV show's like it... it can't

be all Crazy...

It's a great way to step back into the past and remember how it was or at least how Mark thought it was.

Potpourriby pdkporsche This column is meant to inform you about various SVR happenings and SVR people. It will also explore what is happening in other regions as well as things seen on the internet that are Porsche related. I am a member of the regions but will remain anonymous. I am not very active but I thought I could provide a vehicle to talk about various happenings that of interest but not usually reported in this electronic world. Granted the reporting of items in a printed publication is not immediate it does provide for some possible discussion and follow-up that is not of an demanding nature. Send me items that would be of interest. These can be questions or food-for-thought or gossip or gripes. To start off I will say that the September 1st edition of the event calendar received from Babette Hatten was very interesting in that it included an item on “How to Lead Driving Tours and Host Dinners”. It is being held on Tuesday, November 3rd and being pre-sented by Sheila McDade and Bill Keegan. Neat idea for those that want to know the best way to organize and present these types of events. And how about someone writing an article on their driving impressions from the recent Panamera test drives down in Monterey in August? Surely someone from the region attended this car introduction. Send your questions or gossip or gripes to: [email protected]

Tech Article: Smokin’ – Continuedby Jim KinnicuttWith special thanks to Jim Webber – Niello Porsche

Hello to all. Jim here again with a follow up to last month’s article on blowing smoke. I want to first say thank you for some of the questions I have received and we will be talking about them in the upcoming issues. In the next article I am going to take a look at the PDK tranny and it’s operation. I would really love to get some input on driving impressions from some of you that have expe-rienced this cool tranny first hand. Perhaps some of you that got to drive the Panamera while we were in Monterey?? Give me a call or hit me on eMail anytime. If you don’t, I know who some of you are and I will likely be calling you!

It seems the Q & A type of format will work, at lest as long as there is interest in submitting questions. If you have a question about your particular Porsche model, or a question in general, please submit it to me via my eMail ([email protected]). I will research it and get the answer(s) back to you as soon as I can. Like I mentioned last time, I will also publish it in the next Drifter, so you may become a famous published author! If your question however is related to personal ‘issues’, like “Gee Jim, how do I convince my spouse WE really need to plunk down some change for that new Carrera GT?” … well, I think we will have to have a couple of Margaritas to properly address that one. ;)

After the last article I had two ‘printable’ questions come up. The first was more of a follow up question:Q:This question was submitted by Bill Keegan:“I have 911 Turbo, 1987 930 SE (Special Edition = Slant nose option) that will blow a good cloud of smoke on most (not all) start-ups, even if downtime has been as short as 5 minutes. Sometimes it can be a couple of months between startups. Oil usage is about a quart every 1500 - 2000 miles, not excessive for a turbo

A: In order for a engine to produce smoke on start up, the oil has to be in the combustion chamber on start up. With that said, there a couple of things that can lead to oil being left in the cylinder. •Blow-byisonepossibility.Itiscompressionpassingbythecylinderrings.Blowbycanbecheckedwithatestcalledacylinder leak down test (pressurize the cylinder and measure the percentage of air leaking by the rings). This will show if worn rings are the culprit. •Anotherpossibilitywouldbe, oilleakingpastthevalveguides.Like Bill mentioned in his question though, a quart of oil every 1500-2000 miles is considered normal for a turbo.

September 2, 2009 SVR board meetingby Kim Nelson, SVR Secretary

President Cookie Anderson called the meeting to order at 6:33PM.

Attending: Mike Willis, Kim Nelson, Cookie Anderson, Doug Klein, Babette Hatten, John Murphy, Betty Silva, Lee Deter, Hel-en Ashuckian, Ray Silva, Frederick Rauch, Bill Keegan

Minutes: The August minutes were reviewed and accepted.

OLD BUSINESS:Board Member Badges: The Board agreed that badges for next year’s Board Members should be similar to the ones from several years ago where the title was larger. Doug has the authority to make minor changes such as badge size and typeface as he sees fit.

Double signatures on SVR Checks: Doug reported after talking with our bank (Wells Fargo) that bank personnel cannot con-sistently ensure our checks are signed by two SVR board mem-bers. A motion was made and seconded that starting in 2010 the President and Treasurer will have signing authority on all club accounts, but only one signature will be required per check. Ad-ditionally, both the President and Treasurer will have on-line ac-cess to view the accounts and the President will have access to SVR checks in the absence of the Treasure. The motion passed by a margin of 5 to 3.

NEW BUSINESS:President Manual Progress: Cookie noted that she still needs write-ups on Competition, Secretary, President and Vice Presi-dent Board positions.

Christmas Party: Kim gave an update on this year’s SVR Christ-mas Party at Niello Porsche on December 12 th. The budget for the event was presented and then modified by the Board to include the “SVR Board Stimulus Package”. The “Stimulus Pack-age” basically reduces the cost of the party to $25.00 per person with the balance being paid for by the club. The Board obviously had a good time discussing the Stimulus Package – a motion to heavily subsidize the Christmas Party was made, seconded and unanimously approved by the Board.

New Members Group and G24: Doug Klein and Lee Deter presented a thoroughly prepared document to combine the New Member program with the G24 program. The Board requested a few minor changes be made and then approved the program unanimously.

November 3rd Class on How to plan an SVR Driving Tour and host a Dinner: Bill discussed a training event geared toward helping people learn how to put on Dinner Meetings and Driv-ing Tours. A $50.00 budget was requested and unanimously ap-proved by the Board.

SVR’s Annual Planning Meeting: Bill suggested we move SVR’s Annual Planning Meeting to February or March in an effort to get more club members to participate. The Board feels the idea has merit and suggested waiting to decide on the date until our Zone Rep. announces the first 2010 Presidents Meeting.

BOARD MEMBER REPORTS:Charity: Tambra KroetzNo report.

Competition: Frederick RauchNo report.

Advertising: Mike WillisMike reported that A&S BMW currently plans to discontinue Drifter Advertising next year.

Drifter: JR EvingerNo report.

Financial Report: Betty SilvaBetty reported that the club is financially strong and has money in the bank.

G24: Lee DeterNo report.

Goodie Store: Tom SissonReport received and approved.

Membership Director: Doug KleinSVR has 574 primary members with 470 affiliate members for a total of 1044. The club also has 6 dual members. We had no new members last month and 2 members transferred out.

Social Director: Babette HattenThe Board unanimously approved budgets for the November 16th dinner meeting and the November 8th Reiff Driving Tour. The Board also discussed the cost of dinner meetings and unani-mously approved to suspend the $1 to $2 per person currently required to cover SVR overhead expenses through July of 2010.

Webmaster: John MurphyThe total number of hits to our website continues to decline as it seems most people are using the bimonthly Events Calendar for activity information. However, the downloads of The Drifter are increasing and in August, there were more than twice as many downloads as members of SVR meaning its audience is much larger than just our region.

Vice President: Bill KeeganBill updated the calendar for Board members.

Concours on the Avenue 2009by Jim McMahenIt was a lightly overcast day in Carmel on August 11, 2009, but that did not dampen the buzz in the air. Carmel was awakened to the sound of over 200 automobile engines running and the smell exhaust. Porsches, Ferraris, Lamborghinis, Maseratis, Fords, Buicks, Cadillacs, Chevrolets, street rods, dragsters and more were being staged for their entrance onto Ocean Avenue the site of the 2009 Concours on the Avenue. All the cars were placed and the judging began at 11 A.M. sharp. Each entrant was hoping that

the judges would find his/her car to be the best. As the judges finished and thanked entrants for showing their beautiful cars, the owners’s hearts raced with anticipation and thoughts of “was it good enough” ran through their minds. After what seemed to be an eternity the award presenters started to make their rounds. As they approached the area where each class was displayed, owners rose to their feet with great expectation. Two of the entrants were especially excited, Judy Hanna and Bill Keegan. Judy entered her 1962 356 Porsche notch back and Bill entered his 1987 930 Porsche factory slant nose. Can you imagine the thrill when a presenter walks up to you says “Congratulations”. Well that is what happened to Judy and Bill. Our very own Sacramento Valley Region members Judy Hanna and Bill Keegan were each awarded a beautiful Tiffany silver platter. Judy received second place for her efforts and Bill gladly accepted third.

October Report Membership Report by Doug Klein, Membership Director

The Sacramento Valley Region has 574 Regular Members, 470 affiliate members and 6 dual members, for a total of 1,050 members. Membership is down by just 3% since the first of the year, a surprisingly small number given current economic conditions. Congratulations to Bob Peake for 30 years of PCA membership. Bob has served the club and its members in many different capacities during this time. Thank you, Bob.

No ads or trivia this time. After about 30 years of running Goodie Stores for

various clubs, including about 10 for PCA-SVR, I have decided to hang up my shingle and turn SVR’s Goodie Store over to someone else effective the first of January, 2010.

I am hoping to find a volunteer to take over the store before that time so I can introduce them to our clothing vendor and let them know something about the merchandise and proce-dures.

I think some fresh thinking could improve sales. Besides it is a good way to get to know a lot of the club members, and have some fun at the same time.

If anyone is interested, please let me or Cookie Anderson know. You can find our contact information on the Drifter masthead.

Thanks for your patronage through the years.
