REFLECTION from Fr Greg…

Dear Parish Family,

I found this little card on the internet this week. For those who live with Alzheimers or Dementia how hard it can be day to day to get through. Isolation can become part of the normal for those who are full time carers for partners or parents, especially when those they care for are housebound. Lack of sleep, feelings of loss and sadness, guilt, grief and resentment can further isolate those already feeling tried and alone.

These feelings don’t necessarily mean that they would trade places with anyone, or that they love those they are caring for any the less.

This just reminded me of how important it is to continue respecting and supporting the

person living with the losses and to be very mindful of those who are called to love and provide ongoing support to them.

It is, I observe, easy to lose sight of the blessings still to be had as families watch their loved one, or at the least the essence of the person they love, slip away. Easy I guess to ponder those losses from the side lines, not so easy to live with them.

The hardest part I note too often, is the one that says ’I am no longer able to care for my spouse/parent as I would want them cared for’ and to recognise the need for a more intensive care that might see them go into a more protective care environment.

As we age, I guess those decisions will continue to be part of the grief and guilt and need of our families within our community. As a community we have to be mindful that many need our very simplest care – to engage them in conversation, to ask them how life is, and to take the time to listen.

This card just gives us a little way of perhaps supporting families as we encounter them in this time of their journey together and with our parish. We should never be afraid to engage those who live with Alzheimers. There are very few mistakes to be made for the well intentioned and caring person, but it is better to have at least a few clues around what our help might look like. After all it is what a community is.

Best wishes,

Greg
