Germany had admitted defeat and signed an armistice. It was not an unconditional surrender, but Germany had to hand over 5,000 heavy guns, 30,000 machine guns, 2,000 warplanes and all her U- boats. As well as that, Allied troop were to occupy the Rhineland, their upkeep to be paid by Germany, and the Allied blockade of Germany was to remain in force. Just the day before, the Kaiser had fled Germany, seeing the collapse of the Habsburg dynasty, appearing at the Dutch border with his family, servants and possessions, in 12 motor cars and later accompanied by 20 rail carriages containing luggage. He left behind a nation wracked by revolution. Four new nations, with roots going back into Europe’s pre-history, were to spring from the smouldering ashes of the Austro-Hungarian oligarchy. More countries were involved and more people killed over 10 million than in any previous single conflict. 750,000 men from Great Britain died, plus a further 200,000 from the Empire while France with a population less than Britain had a death toll almost twice as high. More than 58,000 Australians never returned home, with many more returning as invalids. The financial burden was also significant with a cost of some 125 million dollars to the Allied side and 60 million from the Central Powers. But it was far from over. At the end of June the following year, the Treaty of Versailles was imposed on the Germans, demanding a provisional compensation payment of 20 billion gold marks, the surrender of 87 square kilometres with a population of 7 million people to neighbouring states and with the left bank of the Rhine to remain under Allied control for up to 15 years. The terms of the treaty were so harsh that Lloyd George declared that “we shall end up fighting another war all over again in 25 years at three times the cost”. He was wrong on two counts: the 2 nd World War started just 20 years later in 1939, and the cost was over 5 times the casualties with over 55 million killed, with Russia, Poland and China bearing the brunt of most of those casualties. Australia’s death toll was 27, 273. To put the financial costs in perspective the “Manhattan Project”, which led to the development of the atomic bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, alone cost 2 billion dollars! We respectfully acknowledge the

Turrbal people, as the traditional owners

and caretakers of the land which is the

Toowong Catholic Parish.

We acknowledge the Elders, past and

present. May we, too, be good stewards of

this land.

Lest We Forget

One hundred years ago this Sunday, shortly before dawn, a party of

Germans including a Catholic politician and two army Generals, entered a

guarded railway carriage in the forest of Compiegne. Six hours later, at

11.00am on the eleventh day of the eleventh month, after four and a

quarter years of war, the guns fell silent on the Battlefields of Europe.

Germany had admitted defeat and signed an armistice.

It was not an unconditional surrender, but Germany had to hand over

5,000 heavy guns, 30,000 machine guns, 2,000 warplanes and all her U-

boats. As well as that, Allied troop were to occupy the Rhineland, their

upkeep to be paid by Germany, and the Allied blockade of Germany was to remain in force.

Just the day before, the Kaiser had fled Germany, seeing the collapse of the Habsburg dynasty,

appearing at the Dutch border with his family, servants and possessions, in 12 motor cars and later

accompanied by 20 rail carriages containing luggage. He left behind a nation wracked by revolution.

Four new nations, with roots going back into Europe’s pre-history, were to spring from the smouldering

ashes of the Austro-Hungarian oligarchy. They were Austria, Czechoslovakia, Hungary and Yugoslavia.

It had truly been the Great War, surpassing in horror anything previously known in the history of the

human race. More countries were involved and more people killed – over 10 million – than in any

previous single conflict. 750,000 men from Great Britain died, plus a further 200,000 from the Empire

while France with a population less than Britain had a death toll almost twice as high. More than 58,000

Australians never returned home, with many more returning as invalids. The financial burden was also

significant with a cost of some 125 million dollars to the Allied side and 60 million from the Central

Powers.

But it was far from over. At the end of June the following year, the Treaty of Versailles was imposed

on the Germans, demanding a provisional compensation payment of 20 billion gold marks, the surrender

of 87 square kilometres with a population of 7 million people to neighbouring states and with the left bank

of the Rhine to remain under Allied control for up to 15 years. The terms of the treaty were so harsh that

Lloyd George declared that “we shall end up fighting another war all over again in 25 years at three times

the cost”. He was wrong on two counts: the 2nd World War started just 20 years later in 1939, and the

cost was over 5 times the casualties with over 55 million killed, with Russia, Poland and China bearing

the brunt of most of those casualties. Australia’s death toll was 27, 273. To put the financial costs in

perspective the “Manhattan Project”, which led to the development of the atomic bombs dropped on

Hiroshima and Nagasaki, alone cost 2 billion dollars!

When will we ever learn?

This Remembrance Day marks the 100th anniversary of the Armistice that ended the First World War.

It’s an opportunity for us all to come together and remember those who sacrificed for our freedom.

So wherever you are, whatever you’re doing, at 11am on 11 November, pause for a minute.

Remember them.

Remembrance Day and the Centenary of Armistice ~ 11 November 2018.

As part of Armistice Centenary commemorations this Remembrance Day, bells from bell towers across Australia, New Zealand and the United Kingdom will ring to mark the significance of this anniversary. It is suggested ringing of bells occur for two to three minutes at 12.30pm, which will ensure that the bells will not conflict with the one minute’s silence or

Remembrance Day services. The St Ignatius Church bell will be rung at this time.
