Nuclear plant unit could be down for extenBy Patrick SweetStaff Writer

Flooding forced operatorPPL to shut down Unit 1 of the Susquehanna NuclearPower Plant near Berwick

lateFriday afternoon. An estimated 1 milliongallons of SusquehannaRiver water flowed from an8-feet diameter pipeheadingto the condenser room wheresteam leaving the tur-bine is cooled and dam-aged equipment in the base-ment of the plants turbinebuilding.

As a result, the plant couldbeshutdownfora long period.

We dont have an esti-mate, PPL spokesman JoeScopelliti said. There is notimeline.

Patrick Finney, the plantsseniorNRC inspector, doesntthink theplant will be onlineanytimesoon, though.

I think they have a longroad ahead of them,Finney

    said Tuesday afternoon. At

this point their focus is get-ting the water out of theaffected rooms and intotanks.

The utility is investigatingwhether a door allowingworkers access to the con-denser room is the source,Scopelliti said. We believethats where theleakwas.

    Finney said they are also

investigating whether a gas-ketwas out-of-place.The jury is still out,

Finney said. There is onemanwaythat is still tricklingwater.

When the plant workersdiscovered the leak, theywere forced to cutoff waterto thepipe manuallybecause

computerizedsystems failed,Finney said. Having to turnthe water off manually, though, doesnt represent asafety issue. The plant, hesaid, was designed to havethemanualoption.

While itwasinconvenientto closethose valves,Finneysaid, they still had the abili-tyto doit.

The plant was forced tobring in extra workersto dry, repair and test equipmentandis sampling thewaterforradiological and industrialmaterial as its removedandstored in tanks.

If it meets all the dis-chargelimits,Scopelliti said

of thewater, itllbe returnedbackto the river.Given the location of the

leak, Finney said, any con-taminants in the water willlikely be industrial, such as

    grease and oil from movingmechanicalparts.

Before theplant is startedback up, PPLwillinspecttheleak andareaaffected bythewater.

To makeup for the loss of

generation, PPL will eitherpurchase additional powerfrom the grid or produce ititself at another plant.Susquehanna Unit 2 is stillfullyfunctioning.
