CURRENT PARTICIPATING DISTRICTS/SCHOOLS:

Toledo Public Schools Sylvania Southview

INTERNSHIP PROGRAM OVERVIEW:

The goal of our internship program is planning for the future.

As we know, many local businesses have been struggling to find skilled trade labor to fill their positions. This struggle is attributed to an overall lack of experienced skill labor AND the work force in the skill trade sector aging and nearing retirement.

Page 22: 0668 - toledochamber.com...Internships and co-op placements ... Renhill HR ON DEMAND INTERNSHIP PROGRAM ABOUT OUR COMPANY HISTORY: Renhill is a privately owned, full-service staffing

This program is student oriented and was not created to only fill businesses general labor/unskilled positions. This program was designed for students to take what they have learned in the classroom and apply it at the work site. It allows them to gain valuable experience in their chosen field in addition to hopefully securing a position within their field after graduation.

This is not a shadowing program; the work being done by the students at the work site contributes to the businesses overall work productivity.

The internship can last any length of time and is determined by both the business partner and the student. They can last 4 weeks, 6 weeks, 12 weeks, or open duration.

HOW DOES OUR PROGRAM WORK?

Renhill has relationships with many local businesses. We reach out to and identify local business that are interested in an internship program with local high school students. Renhill meets with the local businesses and evaluates what work (jobs) each business has that may be suitable for student interns.

We then bring a liaison from the school or district to meet with the business partner at the work site and together we assess/evaluate the work or job being considered for the internship program.

The school/district liaison then identifies which schools program(s) best aligns to the job duties.

The school liaison contacts the teacher of the program to let them know there is a local business looking to host student interns.

Next Steps

1. The business partner comes out to the classroom to speak to the students about the job 2. Renhill and the school schedules a tour for the students

School brings students to the worksite, so the students can see the work environment and the actual work being done

3. The business partner evaluates the students during the tour. Things that are assessed are: Who is asking questions, who comes across as a leader at the front of the pack, who seems

disinterested, who is talking too much with their friends, etc.

After the tour, the business partner, Renhill, and the school liaison discuss the tour and which students will be offered an internship. The school liaison shares the availability & eligibility of the students. Some of the determining factors looked at are:

Are they eligible academically for an internship? How is the student’s attendance and discipline record? What time of the day can the student leave school for work? What after school activities is the student involved with? Transportation?

Page 23: 0668 - toledochamber.com...Internships and co-op placements ... Renhill HR ON DEMAND INTERNSHIP PROGRAM ABOUT OUR COMPANY HISTORY: Renhill is a privately owned, full-service staffing

RENHILL’S ROLE

Renhill is the liaison between the business partner and the schools. We facilitate the interactions with the business partners and the schools to get the students working in their field of study.

Renhill is the employer of record and all interns are paid! Renhill negotiates the pay rates with the business partner using data from market research. As the employer, Renhill pays the students weekly. We withhold all federal, state and local taxes along with remitting the employer portion of the employee’s payroll taxes and issue a W2 at the end of the year.

Businesses appreciate the fact that Renhill is the employer of record for student interns. In addition to paying the student interns, Renhill handles all onboarding items such as:

Employment application Tax forms Pre-employment drug screen Criminal background check Work permits if needed

Renhill works with the business partner to make sure they identify mentors for the students at the work site.
