“Nicholas Herman waseighteen years old when hehad a conversion experi-ence. The experience wasnot the result of diligentstudy or a convincingargument. No, Nicholas’
conversion experience wasthe result of simply lookingat a tree. As he stood onewinter day considering thenakedness of trunk andbranch, and the soon to beaccomplished budding ofnew life in spring, Nicholaswas struck with wonder atthe power and providenceof God. It was a moment ofgrace he would never
forget, a vision of Love sopowerful that, as he relatedthe experience to a friendforty years later he couldnot honestly say if anythingever surpassed theintensity of that momentfor him.
As is so often the case, that initial meeting withGod set the keynote forNicholas’ subsequent
approach to living the lifeof faith. Having encoun-tered God through lookingat a tree, he was con-vinced that God could befound in everything.Nicholas set his mind and
heart on seeking to livealways in the awarenessof God’s presence. Hebelieved that no activity orcircumstance need diverta person from thisawareness. In fact, heclaimed to be more unitedwith the Lord when busyabout his humble tasks ascook in a Carmelitemonastery than when he
left them for formal prayerin the chapel.
So Nicholas Herman(also known as BrotherLawrence) quietly becamea mystic amid pots andpans. He died in Francethree centuries ago.”(Illustrations today 2005)
There are many saintslike Nicholas in Christianhistory- men and women
who became holy not bydoing religious activitiesbut by doing great with amind always on God.
Jesus points us back, over and over again, tothe world of the ordinary
as the place where wemay learn about God, andencounter God’s wonder-ful presence. May it be sofor you during these longand enjoyable days ofSummer. May you seeGod’s glory on walksaround town, out in thecountry. May you see hiswonder by the Lake or apond. And may you
breath in his Holy beinggathered with friends andfamily out in His creation.Enjoy Summer!
Blessings,Rev. April

The Highest Bidder! The Highest Bidder! The Highest Bidder! The Highest Bidder!
During the weddingrehearsal, the groomapproached the pastorwith an unusual offer:
"Look, I'll give you$100 if you'll changethe wedding vows. When you get to thepart where I'm sup-posed to promise to'love, honor and obey'and 'be faithful to herforever,' I'd appreciate
it if you'd just leavethat out."He passed the minis
ter a $100 bill andwalked away satisfied.
On the day of thewedding, when it cametime for the groom'svows, the pastorlooked the young manin the eye and said:"Will you promise toprostrate yourself
before her, obey herevery command andwish, serve her break-fast in bed everymorning of your life, and swear eternallybefore God and yourlovely wife that you willnot ever even look atanother woman, aslong as you both shalllive?"
The groom gulped
and looked around, and said in a tiny voice"Yes," then leanedtoward the pastor andhissed: "I thought wehad a deal."
The pastor put a$100 bill into thegroom's hand andwhispered: "She mademe a better offer."
