Dear parents and supportive members of our Carranballac P-9 College community,

Welcome to our first newsletter for Term 3.

We have had an amazing start to the term with all staff and students settling in extremely well.

The college athletics and inter-school sports carnivals are in full swing and to date the weather has obliged us, albeit a bit fresh. All of the feedback I have received has been completely complimentary of the students’ participation and behaviour. We continue to experience increased levels of student participation and improved behaviour across the College and I would like to congratulate our staff for the strengthening relationships with students and families.

I would also like to thank our families for backing us, and building the trust that is the glue to the fabric of a successful learning environment. We cannot hide from the fact that education is a partnership between the student, the College staff and the family and if all are in synchronisation with a desire to have common goals for the benefit of our students; your children, the outcomes will be positive and progressive. Families and students can demonstrate their commitment to their children’s progression by ensuring they attend this week’s Student Learning Conferences.

An exciting modification to this SLC afternoon has been the implementation of parent access to the Year 9 Elective Showcase. All Year 7 / 8 and 9 SLC meetings have been shifted to the Boardwalk Campus in the BER building in order to provide families with a look at the available electives curriculum programs for Year 9 students. Families are encouraged to examine these wonderful options for future planning. Year 8 students are to make their choices on the evening with the support of their families. I look forward to meeting a number of families this Thursday.

TRIVIAI would like to express my appreciation to the hard working and dedicated team of Parents and Friends who continue to provide for our community. This week’s TRIVIA night is yet another one of their successful calendar events. I am aware

of the range of prizes / auction items / activities that are on offer for the evening and it really does offer great value and entertainment for those who have registered to attend. I would like to encourage members of our community to consider joining the P and F team. There are a range of ways in which you can engage with the P and F and if you would like to know more please email the College with a request and we will get back to you.

WAKAKIRRIMonday night was so uplifting, I felt so proud and privileged to be a part of the Carranballac P-9 College community. My thanks and congratulations goes out to all involved – staff, students, parents, costume and prop supporters/transporters, makeup, choreography, bus drivers, backstage and to those I may have missed. It takes a huge team commitment to bring Wakakirri together successfully as was the case Monday night. Chookas.

LITERACY/NUMERACY WEEKOur annual College week of celebration is well underway.

Our Literacy and Numeracy committee have done an incredible job of preparing a range of engaging activities for students and families for this week. We were thrilled with the packed gyms this morning of parents, grandparents and special visitors joining our students for the Teddy Bears picnic.

Somehow a few cuddly penguins, horses and parrots managed to get past security to join the Teddy Bears picnic. It was truly a wonderful event and so lovely to see parents take the time out of their busy schedules to join their precious children to celebrate education – well done.

PARKING AND TRAFFIC

We continue to be concerned about the poor behaviour of our road users. In order to bring a higher level of safety back onto the streets surrounding the College School Council members and myself will be meeting with the City of Wyndham traffic engineers to discuss a range of strategies to improve safety for all. One of my key points will be to request more active policing of the road and parking rules. Please stop and think, look and listen, plan ahead before you enter the pickup and drop off zones around both Campuses.

STOP LOOKLISTEN THINK

Welcome back. We trust our families enjoyed the mid-year break, with the wintery conditions ideal for family time inside at home. We are excited about the learning experiences planned for the second half of 2018.

Term 3 started very smoothly, with all primary and secondary classes settling. Welcome to our new families who have joined the Carranballac community. We warmly welcomed our Korean students who arrived this week as a component of our student exchange program. Our community are supporting this program through home-stay accommodation. An extensive program has been planned for their visit, with a group of our Year 8 students preparing to visit Korea later in the year. This amazing educational opportunity enhances the development of personal growth, independence and resilience skills and understandings for our students as global citizens.

The term has certainly moved forward quickly. Boardwalk Athletics for Years 3-6 were a huge success last Thursday, with a cold but sunny day giving perfect conditions for our track and field stars of the future, and Jamieson Way Year 3-6 Athletics were held on Tuesday this week in wintery conditions. Our children enjoyed themselves immensely, and great enthusiasm being shown for their house colours! Thank you to those parents who volunteered to help us provide this event for our students.

Thank you to the many families who so generously donated to our Parents & Friends recycling fundraiser last Friday. Another successful fundraiser strongly supported by this community!

As you may know, our college has a very proud history of successful involvement in the national performing arts competition, Wakakirri. Excited Boardwalk students and families attended the Clocktower Theatre in Moonee Ponds on Monday night for this year’s entry in Wakakirri. Our wonderful story this year is based on the event in August, 1975 when Prime Minister Gough Whitlam visited a remote area of the Northern Territory for the landmark transfer of pastoral lease to the Gurindji people. The Boardwalk Year 6 students have been working on their entry all term and we sincerely thank Carly Perry for her invaluable support and guidance. Thank you to all our families and staff who have helped with costumes and set designs. We are very proud of our students, staff and families for their outstanding Wakakirri entry.

Our Year 9 Electives Showcase is being held at the College BER building (Boardwalk school) concurrently with Student Learning Conferences, with the schowcase aimed at showcasing the Year 9 Electives Program for 2019. This event will provide

the opportunity for our Year 8 students to wander through the expo with their parents and select their electives for 2019. This special event means that all College secondary student learning conferences are being held at Boardwalk campus this term. Primary Student Learning Conferences will be campus based as usual.

Literacy/Numeracy Week is being celebrated across the college with puzzles, quizzes, events and learning experiences including our amazing Book Fair. It concludes with our Dress Up parades at each campus on the Friday. The college year level themes have been promoted on compass. Please support our famous 5 cent drive. This component of Literacy & Numeracy Week has been a huge success each year, with a range of numeracy activities begin focused around 5 cent pieces in our classrooms, and with funds raised going to States Schools Relief. This organisation supports families with children in government schools across Victoria who may be experiencing difficulty.

It is hard to believe our Foundation students will soon be celebrating their 100 Days of school. Details and information about this event have been communicated to our families via compass. If you need help accessing compass, please contact our office. Each year level also promotes events on their year level notice boards. These boards are situated outside the year level areas at each campus. There is also a main campus notice board outside the office area at both campuses, with general reminders and information for parents.

We encourage our families to continue to complete The Premier’s Reading Challenge. Reading daily has a significant impact on learning.

CANTEEN NEWSNEW MENU ITEMS!

Welcome back everyone. We have a new menu this term with some tasty new lunch options to try out. The new meals are butter chicken with rice, coconut chicken Thai curry and creamy bacon carbonara. These are not too spicy and are child friendly healthy lunch options.We no longer are able to supply the Four and Twenty Slams as they have been removed from production but there are plenty of other options to choose from.Menus are available on the Carranballac website. Paper copies are available from the canteen and office.Have a great term.

How do I gain a Mathletics certificate?A certificate is awarded to a student once they have earned 1000 points in a single week. Only one certificate is awarded each week, to help encourage sustained study by the student. NRL Back Yard League Super Star Students

The Year 5 & 6 classes at Boardwalk really enjoyed their four week National Rugby League program conducted towards the end of Term 2 at school. Josh 5B, Clarice 5A and Shontae 5A were awarded a rugby ball for their noticeable high level of participation, skill development and fabulous good sportsmanship! It was great to witness so much enthusiasm for physically involvement each week.

Sporting Schools - Melbourne Victory Soccer Program

The Year 5 & 6 students at Jamieson Way were really lucky to each receive a Melbourne Victory Scarf for their participation in the 4 week Sporting Schools Program. Students developed their soccer skills in lots of fun game situations and have increased their knowledge of what’s involved in soccer!

Year 3-6 Boardwalk Athletics Carnival

Wow! What a fun day we all had at the Year 3-6 Boardwalk Athletics Carnival held last Thursday 19th July. It was a fantastic way to start the term and we were very lucky to have such a great sunny day, despite the weather forecast predicting rain! On Monday 24th July the Years 7s, 8s and 9s were visited by 2 performers who performed a play called ‘Escape from Worryville’ as part of the Literacy and Numeracy Week celebrations.

Escape from Worryville was an interactive play that showed us different ways other children our age worry. The play took us through the worrying experiences of the two main characters’, Kahuna and Thomas. Kahuna was dealing with getting suspended and his parents’ reaction to it and Thomas was dealing with his mother having cancer and his abusive father who is not happy about his new behaviour in class. The way Thomas is coping with his mother having cancer is by smoking and hurting himself.

This play has taught us that you never know what someone is going through in their personal life so you can never judge them when you do not know the whole story.

Thank you to the performers for coming to perform and Ms Robinson, Mrs Day and Ms Birkinhead and our other teachers for organising this experience.

ESCAPE FROM WORRYVILLE : Chloe, 7A

S T E MSCIENCE TECH ENGINEERING MATHScience: Robotics

On Wednesday 18th July, 7C was visited by Alon, Mr. Szkuta and Thisara for our Term 3 of robotics and coding in Science. There we learned how to build a motorcycle out of Abilix. We had to build

our motorcycles step-by-step in our own groups. At the end of the session we were able to place a sensor on our motorbikes to allow it to drive. The sensors were designed to help vehicles stop at the right moment without driving into a solid substance or another vehicle. We are extremely grateful for Alon, Mr. Szkuta and support in helping us to achieve building this device and teaching us to program it. We all achieved building our motorcycles in the 30 minutes time that we

had. Some sections were difficult at the time but we all came through and were able to use our bikes.

The whole of 7C wants to thank Alon, Mr. Szkuta and Thisara for teaching us about programming, sensors, radio waves and automatic cruise control.

Science: ElectronicsThis Term in Science the Year 9s are learning about how electric circuits work. Our first assessment task was to design and build a circuit to turn on light bulbs and buzzers and we have been busy experimenting with static and

current electricity and how it works. In week 5 the Year 9s have an excursion to Scienceworks to investigate the relationship between electricity and magnets.

WakakirriBy the time you read this, Wakakirri will have taken place. There will be so much to report back about! “Chookas” (good luck…but it’s bad luck to actually say “good luck” in the theatre world!) to our Boardwalk Year 6 participants and their fearless leaders Mrs O’Reilly and dance instructor Carly Perry!

The Rock Band, VET and VCE ProgramRock Fest

Rock Fest was an overwhelming success, due in no small part to the focus on performance our bands had leading up to the event. We thank the teachers, students and families who supported the bands at the Boardwalk and family night shows in the lead up to Rock Fest. All bands gave their best performances for the year at Rock Fest, supported by an enthusiastic audience of other bands and Boardwalk students. Particularly gratifying has been the growth in our newest group, Mr Grima’s Year 9 VET Certificate II class; most of whom were only giving their 3rd or 4th public appearance.

We had a very successful day; here’s the rundown of the awards our students picked up:

• Best Junior Band (up to Year 9) – “Amplified” (the Year 9 members of our senior rock band)

• Best Senior Band (Years 10-12) – “Dropout Paradise” from our VET Certificate III program

• Best Senior Duo (years 10-12) – “Followers of Christ”, also from our VET Certificate III program

• Best Guitarist – Hamish Freemantle from our VET Certificate III program

• Best Bass Player – Aurelia Futi from our VET Certificate III program

• Best Drummer – James Marshall from our VET Certificate III program

• Best Keyboard player – Lewis Gellaty from our senior rock band, competing against students up to Year 12!

“Amplified” and “Dropout Paradise” will compete at the National Final on August 30.

Rock Band RecordingIn mid-August, our junior and senior rock bands will be following through with the song writing sessions they completed earlier in the year by recording their own compositions. Our work with local musician / producer Luke Yeoward will continue at his Half Way Studios in South

Yarra. What an amazing opportunity and I know I for one look forward to hearing these fantastic songs in my headphones!

The ChoirRefugee Week

Our school choir performed at a special concert to celebrate Refugee Week. We heard from a range of people on the subject of refugees, enjoyed the music of other schools and the Police Pipe Band. The students had their faces painted and were treated to a lunch of traditional Karen food, Subway rolls and cakes. While a little nervous on their first song “Somewhere Over The Rainbow”, the choir really bought the magic in “This Is Me”. Thanks to Chriss Barker and Fiona Luttrell for accompanying us and choir leader Madeliene Axiak.

We look forward to a performance of the Choir at the Parent Forum on August 7, and the Jamieson Way portion of the choir will perform at their assembly on Friday August 10 followed by the Boardwalk edition will perform the following week, Friday August 17 at their campus.
