The Solemnity of Mary Mother of God falls exactly one week after Christmas, the end of the octave of Christmas. It is fitting to honor Mary as Mother of

Jesus, following the birth of Christ. When Catholics celebrate the Solemnity of Mary Mother of God we are not only honoring Mary, who was chosen among all women throughout history to bear God incarnate, but we are also honoring

our Lord, who is fully God and fully human. Calling Mary "mother of God" is the highest honor we can give Mary. Just as Christmas honors Jesus as the "Prince of Peace," the Solemnity of Mary Mother of God honors Mary as the "Queen of Peace" This solemnity, falling on New Year's Day, is also designated the World

Day of Peace.

From The Pastor’s Desk/Del Escritorio del Párroco I am sure that we all have made numerous New Years’ Resolutions during our life time. I like this practice. It is good to review our life. Most of us have probably made the normal resolutions to eat less, exercise more, etc. I am hoping that also included in our resolutions were to make time for God in our lives, to practice our faith at home and with our faith community.

I would like to propose the following that may be part of your New Year’s Resolution. Most of these I received in one of the many emails that I get. They are thought provoking.

ONE Give people more than they expect and do it cheerfully.TWO When you say, 'I love you,' mean it.THREE When you say, 'I'm sorry,' look the person in the eye.FOUR Never laugh at anyone's dream.FIVE Love deeply and passionately. You might get hurt but it's the only way to live life completely.SIX When someone asks you a question you don't want to answer, smile and ask, “Why do you want to know?”SEVEN Remember that great love and great achievements involve great risk.EIGHT When you lose, don't lose the lesson!NINE Remember the three R's: Respect for self; Respect for others; and Responsibility for all your actions.TEN Don't let a little dispute injure a great friendship.ELEVEN When you realize you've made a mistake, take immediate steps to correct it.TWELVE Smile when picking up the phone. The caller will hear it in your voice.THIRTEEN Spend some time alone.

Estoy seguro de que todos han hecho numerosas resoluciones del Año Nuevo, durante nuestro tiempo de vida. Me gusta esta práctica. Es bueno para revisar nuestra vida. La mayoría de nosotros hemos hecho las resoluciones normales: a comer menos, hacer más ejercicio, etc. Espero que también se incluyen en nuestras resoluciones fueron a hacer tiempo para Dios en nuestras vidas, a practicar nuestra fe en casa y con nuestra comunidad de fe.

To Our Saint Turibius Alumni

As a long-time Administrator and Educator within the Catholic school system, my experience has shown that a quality of education is a key component to the future success of every child! I am extremely proud to say that the dedicated faculty and staff of St. Turibius are committed to providing academic excellence and Catholic values to every student within our school community. However, we truly are in need of your help!!

While the current economic conditions have made this focus an ever more challenging endeavor for all schools, it has become even more so for many of the Chicagoland Catholic schools, especially those where financial support is solely dependent on student enrollment. As you may recall from our letter to you last year, St. Turibius was designated as an Archdiocese of Chicago Board Initiative School in 2010, which means we must sustain our school without any financial assistance from St. Turibius Parish. While we are ever so grateful for the generous support of many of our alumni this past year, we unfortunely continue to struggle financially.

How You Can Make A Difference!!

St. Turibius has been a pillar of Catholic excellence, serving the educational needs of the children within the Chicago Lawn and Clearing neighborhoods for more than 83 years - an accomplishment for which we are extremely proud!! Our school has graduated thousands of students who have successfully pursued all walks of life. Throughout the years we have heard from many of you with stories regarding your careers and families. To our great pleasure, we also hear that the Catholic education you received at St. Turibius truly did make a difference and can be attributed to many of your succcesses!!

We want to continue to make this possible for all our current families and for all of those we are hopeful to teach and guide in the years to come. Unfortunately, this may not be possible without the continued financial support of our alumni!! Within the last couple of years, we have experienced a significantly competitive environment amoung both the Catholic and public schools in the surrounding areas. We know St. Turibius offers an excellent faith-based academic learning environment, and it is our goal to not just sustain this status but enhance all our programs while maintaining our facilities and offering financial assistance on an as-needed basis.

In order to remain a vital contender with the community, would you please consider a $100 contribution to our 2011-2012 School Fund? Living Stewardship Now If you know someone who is elderly, frail, and isolated,

find ways to be a presence and a support. Drop a greeting card in the mail. Make a “How are you?” phone call. Go by with home-

made goodies. Offer to run errands or drive to doctor visits or church. Take the family over and do yard work or other chores.

SOMOS UNA FAMILIA Hoy honramos a la Sagrada Familia. Todos pertenecemos a una familia, bien por nacimiento, bien por matrimonio o adopción. Pertenecemos a la familia de fe por el bautismo y también a la gran familia humana. Recientemente se reportó una historia acerca de una mujer en Inglaterra, que estaba jubilada y vivía sola. Iba a Misa con regularidad, pero no participaba en la vida parroquial. Según su única amiga, a esta señora no le quedaba ninguna familia. Todo el tiempo se lo pasaba de compras. Los vecinos que veían su ir y venir cayeron un día en la cuenta de que el carro no se había movido en varios días y llamaron a la policía. Los oficiales que vinieron a inves-tigar hallaron una casa abarrotada de “cosas”. Les tomó dos días encontrar a la mujer en un cuarto bajo unas cajas pesadas que la mataron al caerle encima. Todos conocemos a personas que care-cen de ayuda familiar. Algunas hacen amistades fácilmente. Otras, particularmente las frágiles y de edad avanzada, se retraen pues temen molestar a los demás. El aislamiento puede tener conse-cuencias terribles. Si estás en condiciones de ayudar, no permitas que eso suceda.

WE ARE FAMILY On this day we honor the Holy Family. We are all born, married, or adopted into families. We belong to the family of faith through baptism and to the larger human family. Recently, a story was reported about a woman in England. She was retired and lived alone. She regularly attended Mass, but was not involved in parish life. According to her only friend, this lady had no family left. She spent all her time shopping. Neighbors who saw her come and go finally noticed her car had not been moved in days and reported it to police. Investigating officers discovered a house packed with “stuff.” It took them two days to find the lady in a bedroom, where heavy boxes had fallen on her and killed her. We all know people who are without family support. Some are outgoing and have friends. Oth-ers, particularly the frail and elderly, are shy or fearful of bothering anyone. Isolation can have fearful consequences. Don’t let it hap-pen if you can help it.

The Santo Niño de Cebú (“Holy Child of Cebú”) is a Roman Catholic figure of the Child Jesus. Devotions to the Santo Niño de Cebú is very popular in the Philippines. This is because the original statue of the Holy Child has historical value and great influence in the initial works of evangelization of the Augustinianswho were the first Catholic missionaries to arrive in the Philip-pines. The statue was a gift by Ferdinand Magellan to the Queen of Cebú in 1521 after her conversation and baptism to the Catho-lic faith. The statue is permanently housed at the Basilica Minore del Santo Nino in Cebú City, Philippines.

We wish to extend to each of you a Blessed Christmas and a Happy and Healthy New Year. Our Christmas picture this year is from in front of the Basilica of St. Francis in Assisi, Italy. BaptismsPlease contact the rectory office (x10) to make arrangements for your baby’s baptism and to register for a baptismal preparation session. Baptisms in English are on the third Sunday of the month at 2:00PM. Baptisms in Spanish are on the second Sunday of the month at 2:00PM. Baptisms in Polish take place at or during the Polish Mass at 9:30 AM on Sunday morning.

1st Friday Devotions1st Friday Devotions will take place on the 1st Friday every month after the 8:00am daily mass.

MarriageCouples must make an appointment with one of the priests for an interview at least six to nine months in advance of their marriage. No wedding date will be set until this interview is completed.

Sick CallsPlease contact the rectory office (x10) to arrange for visits to the sick and homebound. The priests and our ministers of care will make every effort to visit parishioners in the hospital, at home, and in nursing homes.
