Used Sharps Disposal Program Highlands County has this program available. Used needles and other sharps aredangerous to people and pets, if not disposed of properly. They can injure and spread infections that cause serious health conditions. Self-inject medications are used for treating a wide range of conditions, including diabetes, osteoporosis, multiple sclerosis, HIV, AIDS, hepatitis C, migraines, cancer, kidney disease, and psoriasis. In addition residents at home administer blood thinners, growth hormones, vitamin B-12, and allergy shots. Residents and visitors to Tanglewood who self-inject medications or use disposable lancets to test their blood sugar need to know how to safely dispose of these sharps. Too many times these are thrown in the trash, creating significant health risks to our HTA staff, neighbors, pets and sanitation workers. This program is provided free of charge to Highlands County residents and visitors who must administer injections or perform blood tests in their homes or RV’s. Residents participating in this program will receive a free sharps container for the safe disposal of their sharps. These containers are designed to contain sharps and are like the containers used at the hospital, doctors office and other health care providers. When the container reaches the full mark you will be given instructions to safely lock and label the container and then you can take the container back for safe disposal by a certified company which specializes in this type of waste disposal.
