Guildford Goannas 2017/2018 Presidents Report

Welcome committee members, players and supporters to the Guildford Bowling Cricket Clubs 14th annual cricket presentation day. Due to the fact we only were able to register 1 team this season the Cricket Committee has decided to have a barefoot bowls and lunch Presentation instead of our usual night time presentation. Congratulations to the A Reserves team on your sportsmanship behaviour on and off the field not only this season but over previous seasons. I would like to personally pay particular attention to our A Reserve captain Daniel Crouch ensuring that his team is always organised as well as keeping up the high standard of fair play. Daniel over years has led by example of being a loyal and trustworthy captain ensuring all players are given equal opportunity. I can speak on behalf of the committee that we hold Daniel of the highest esteem and that we have utmost confidence and respect for him.

The Committee have undertaken a proactive approach to recruit players before the start of the 2018/19 cricket season to ensure the long-term future of the Cricket Club. We have invested in a new Web Master as well as other social media such as Facebook and Gumtree which we will use to not only promote the cricket club but to reach out to the community as an advertisement to recruit cricket players.

I would like to personally thank my fellow committee members; Darryl Verity (Secretary), Tracey Verity (Assistant Secretary), John Houlford (Treasurer), Barbara Houlford (Senior Vice President), Sandra Hession (Junior Vice President), Daniel Crouch (Gear Manager and A Res Captain), Greg Crouch (Delegate). Our committee members have worked tirelessly behind the scenes to ensure the smooth operation of the cricket club, not only throughout this cricket season but in the off season as well. A special mention must also go to the CMBG for their sponsorship and support.

Peter Hession,

President

Secretary’s Report 2017/18

I would like to take this opportunity to thank all those members of the committee for their hard work in keeping the wheels turning in our club. This last season has been quite a different one with only the one team for the first time in our Clubs history. The committee and especially Daniel Crouch have been working hard on coming up with ways the Club can reach out and attract new players to our Club. We have restructured our registration fees to keep them the lowest in the PDCA. We have purchased new style playing shirts and a new style training shirt that will be incorporated in the rego fees.

Daniel has spent countless hours developing a new web page that we hope will reach potential new members to our club. To those loyal players wishing to continue playing the club committee is committed in having teams compete in the 2018/19 PDCA competition but will need your help and support in getting the word out there that Club Merrylands Cricket Club will be the best club for them to play in the upcoming season. To all our players and supporters another faultless behavior season well done.

To our A res this season is very similar to the last couple. This season started with a bang everything was going well then. Player injuries, some close games that could have went our way but not to be. Oh well there is next year. There were some good moments through the season and to those players who set some personal records well done and a successful season on those achievement.

Lastly to the Board of Club Merrylands for their support and belief in the Club Merrylands Cricket Club throughout the year.

Have a great time off from cricket enjoy the winter and if you know anyone who wants to play cricket for a great club bring them with you.

Yours in sport

Darryl Verity,

Secretary

TREASURER’S REPORT – 2017/2018

This was a very different season for the club as we only had one team in the competition, the A Reserves. The scarcity of players seems to cover all areas and age groups. We have had to have a very close look at how we can attract more players. A couple of areas we have looked at are: Updating/expanding our website. Daniel has put a lot of time and effort into this area and it should be fully operational by May/June 2018. New playing shirts and caps. Reduced registration fee which includes the shirt and cap.

Merrylands Bowling Cub sponsorship keeps us in a sound financial position and we would like to thank the club for their continued support. I would like to thank my fellow committee members for their continued support during the cricket season and through the off season.

John Houlford,

Treasurer

Operations Managers A Reserves Division Report

Before the start of the 2017/18 season from a club perspective, the Guildford Goannas A Reserves were the only team to be registered in the PDCA competition. Nevertheless, the club tried their best to put another team together but that was not to be. However, we must move forward to achieve a positive outcome to not only the present generation but for future generations. This can be achieved from a business perspective by outlining that the competition is very fierce in the marketplace & also by having a right recruitment strategy with great networks along with retaining players in an orderly manner, the club can make a good return on investment.

Now to the cricket season just past. The 2017/18 season was disappointing for the club, where the A Reserves had too many injuries which had an impact on results in the process. As the saying goes, “If a team has too many injuries to key players & so forth, it is going to be a real struggle for the entire season.”

The first half of the season was a mixed bag, coupled with injuries to key players & losing games at critical moments. Although the players tried their best in difficult circumstances, they cannot be disgraced for their efforts. That’s just the way things go sometimes whether you win, lose or draw. However, the challenge is to learn from the mistakes being made so that as a team can do better by showing accountability from their present performances. This is by remembering that in sport, the competition for positions are up for grabs & if you put in great performances you can make a good return for not only yourself, but for the team. If you cannot, then the position is taken by a replacement player.

Throughout the season, there are two players worth mentioning. David O’Connor’s club record breaking run milestone along with being the prolific run scorer & the selfless Steve Alexander for supplying water to all players on a regular basis, especially in extreme heat. As the everyday saying goes when staying out in hot weather conditions, “Be heat smart, stay hydrated.” Well done gentlemen for your tireless efforts.

However, after the Christmas/New Year break, it was a challenging period including the loss of a well-respected player in Matthew Stokes known as “Stokesy” to his fellow team mates who accepted a new challenge in his career that will enhance his prospects along with a late injury to one of the greats in Matt Preston. At the end of the regular season, we did not make the finals in the process after agonizing losses.

On behalf of the board & management & once again, I would like to thank the current squad who have worked tirelessly as a group throughout this season with respect & fighting spirit. It was a great pleasure to work with the current squad this season in difficult circumstances throughout the course of the season. As the saying goes, “United We Stand. Divided We Fall” in trying times both in sport & in everyday life. We have shown that we can still be competitive, that we can play hard and we can play games with plenty of emotion in this division.

Page 13:   · Web viewTo those loyal players wishing to continue playing the club committee is committed in having teams compete in the 2018/19 PDCA competition but will need your help and

However, the challenge for next season is to stay composed & minimizing the injury toll. This can be achieved by retaining the current squad, as well as acquiring new talent so that we can have a better along with a stronger & competitive team by implementing a continuous improvement plan on a regular basis for the 2018/19 season & for many seasons to come, striving for consistency & success. In the words of the Go-Ahead Group chairman John Trayner, “As we learn when we are slightly off the pace, we will improve & amend it, so it is a part of implementing continuous improvement.”

I would like to thank Daniel Crouch in particular, for taking on the publicity role within the club in difficult circumstances & for attending committee meetings with fellow committee members in the process. Without his tireless efforts, it would not be possible on top of his past efforts since joining the club. At the Guildford Goannas, it is important for us & we understand the importance of participating in the PDCA competition so that we can achieve great results by staying competitive & looking forward into the future.

So once again, thank you very much for your efforts this season & we look forward to having a better & stronger 2018/19 season.

Mark Kasunic,

Operations Manager

A Reserves Captains Report

This year could be best described as “what if” for us in the A Reserves as injuries and plenty of close matches ruled our entire season.

After a very solid off season where most of the playing group made a concerted effort to train hard at the nets and or play regular winter season cricket matches and the addition of two new players to the team, (Stephen Alexander and Dean Heffernan) the boys had a lot of confidence heading in to the new season.

This new-found confidence would be severely tested just one day into the new season as we lost the toss and had to bowl to a new look Winston Hills Side at Max Ruddock Reserve……. 5 ½ hours later we walked off the field knowing we had to chase a mammoth 337 the next week. What a welcome to the new season! As in true A Reserves style this chase was seen as a challenge, with some determined batting we fought to 9/316 when the match was called a draw due to light.

It wasn’t until round three that we had our first win against Kings Langley. The win came at a cost with Chris Lahoud suffering a shoulder injury that would sideline him for several weeks and myself needing time off for surgery after that match. Again, in true A Reserves style the team wouldn’t let this become a setback as Matt Preston and David O’Connor stepped up as Co Captains in my absence.

Over the next four rounds we would trade tough wins and losses against all teams in the competition, in most games individual performances would be the deciding factor rather than team dominance, such was the closeness of competition. During this time, we had another setback with Matthew Sarnacki injuring his knee whilst diving to save a boundary in the outfield. Another important member of the playing roster sidelined! As always, the rest of the playing group stepped up to fill the void left by the ever-growing injury list.

At the halfway point of this season we were sitting just out of the top four with a record of 2 wins, 3 losses and 1 draw.

After the Christmas/New Year break we came out firing winning three out of our next four matches and looking to making a late season charge towards the finals. This momentum would unfortunately come to a grinding halt in our round 12 clash against the eventual competition winners Wenty Leagues. The hard hitting Wenty boys put 260 on us at Guildford Park, historically usually a winning first innings score. Again, the injury monster struck our team again with our enforcer Matt Preston discovering before our batting innings he needed

season ending surgery for a hernia suffered terrorizing opposition batsman during the season. Unfortunately without our full batting complement we were soundly beaten outright by Wenty.

Page 15:   · Web viewTo those loyal players wishing to continue playing the club committee is committed in having teams compete in the 2018/19 PDCA competition but will need your help and

This left us in fifth position heading in the final round of regular competition. We needed to beat Rouse Hill to make the semis, despite missing some of our regular players and other players carrying injuries themselves we played a hard match but came up short against a very good Rouse Hill.

All in all, I personally thought as a team we had another good season considering all the circumstances we went through during the season.

I’d like to make a few special mentions and thank you to the people who went above and beyond this season to make our team tick over each week.

To our great mate Matthew Stokes, Thank you for all your effort and contributions over the years to our team. Although work has taken you away from us you are truly a Guildford Goanna no matter how far you travel. Your constant presence (and generous love towards your captain) has been an important part to our success every year. We wish you well in your medical endeavors and hope to don the whites with you again one day.

To Chris Lahoud, David O’Connor, and Matt Preston thank you so much for running the team in my absence at one stage or another throughout the season. The team is very lucky to have you guys in the team and willing to do whatever is needed at a moment’s notices. Again, many thanks.

Congratulations to David O’Connor on your run scoring record this season! 824 runs is an amazing effort and one that you should be personally very proud of. I have been lucky enough to watch most of your season from the other end of the pitch and I must say it was a pleasure to watch you go about your work. Again, congratulations and very well deserved.

To my boys, thank you for another great season of cricket, it’s always a privilege to play alongside such a great bunch of blokes each week. You guys are the reason why I look forward to Saturday afternoons so much in summer. Also, to friends, family and everyone who helps us each week at cricket thank you from all of us, as always it is you who make the team what it is today.

Finally…… always leave the best to last, to our greatest supporter, the living legend himself Mark “Shadow” Kasunic thank you again for all that you do. Cricket is not the same without you there each Saturday bestowing your pearls of wisdom on each and every one of us so again from all the boys thank you.

“The strength of the team is each member. The strength of each member is the team.” – Phil Jackson, Famous NBA Coach
