Garbage dumped in Mambalam canalSir, Mambalam Canal in West CIT Nagar was cleaned and desilted

in April. But within 2 months, the canal is again full of garbage and plastic

waste.I have seen a number of residents and vendors dumping the waste

into the canal without realizing the environmental issues they arecausing.

Though the Corporation is regularly cleaning the canal, the publicshould have civic sense, and should dump waste only in designated binsor hand it over to the garbage collector for proper disposal.

When I spoke to a Corporation official, he said that a number ofresidents and commercial complexes are also letting sewage into thecanal.

At places where there is easy access to the canal, the Corporationshould close them with concrete slabs or wire mesh to deter anyonefrom throwing garbage into it. R. Mahesh, Muthurangan Salai, T.Nagar

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Drivers harassed in Pondy Bazaar for unauthorisedparking fee

Sir, For several weeks now, a number of persons claiming to beauthorised parking fee collectors, are harassing car drivers demandingparking charges in Pondy Bazaar.

The other day, the person in the attached photo shouted at me andblocked the way demanding parking charge. No one minds payingparking charges as long as the money reaches the Chennai Corporation.

When I asked him to show his license and rate list, he showed me someID which was not issued by Chennai Corporation. For the rate list, hejust showed me a parking coupon which he claimed was issued by theCorporation. When I told him Rs. 20 for half hour parking was notcharged in any other market area, he started shouting and demandingthe money.

Finally, I left instead of holding up the traffic but after collecting thereceipt. I have a strong suspicion that these guys are touts, and areoperating illegally right under the nose of the police and Corporationofficials.

If they are genuine and are duly licensed, Corporation should displaynotices at all the paid parking lots in Pondy Bazar, showing the ratesand the name of the licensee. Corporation should also ensure that thecollectors sport nameplates and carry proper ID cards issued by theCorporation. R. Kuppuswamy, 20/24, Malony Road, T. Nagar,Ph:99400 33503

Why not entry fee for renovated parks?Sir, I understand that Chennai Corporation has spent crores to

renovate many parks in Chennai and the renovated Natesan Park andJeeva Park were inaugurated this week.

Corporation officials and visitors should now ensure that theinfrastructures are maintained properly and the parks are not misusedby nefarious elements. During the renovation period, I was a regularvisitor to Panagal park. I often used to find drunkards sleeping in thewalking track and students from neighbouring schools disturbing thetranquility by creating nuisance and littering the place.

In this connection, I would like to give a few suggestions:Like the major parks in Bengaluru and Snake Park in Adyar,

Chennai Corporation should charge an entry fee to deter beggars andother nefarious elements from entering the park.

They can also introduce a monthly pass for regular visitors. These are just suggestions by a regular park visitor, but if there are

better solutions to retain the peace and tranquility in the park forvisitors to relax, the same maybe implemented. H. NageshBhandarkar, Sri Krishna Apartments, 40, 8th Avenue, AshokNagar

Illegal tapping of metro water in neighbourhoodSir, In a pre-dawn raid by Metrowater Board to detect illegal tapping

from supply lines, it found an eatery/hostel on Motilal Street illegallydrawing metro water using a motor.

Immediately thereafter, the Board cut the supply line and alsoslapped a fine of Rs. 20,000. The Board also seized the motor which theunit was using to draw water.

On behalf of the residents of Motilal Street, we thank the Metrowater

Appeal to make 55th Street, AshokNagar one-way

Sir, Compared to 53rd and 54th Streets inAshok Nagar, 55th Street is narrow.

Unfortunately, this narrow road is the routeto Ashok Nagar for motorists coming fromtraffic-ridden 1st Avenue. A number of vehiclesenter 55th Street at high speed which oftenleads to frequent accidents due to its narrowwidth. As the road cannot be widened, it is saferto make it one-way and install a speed breakerat its junction with 1st Avenue. Dr. K. R.Chidambara Kumarasamy, 53rd Street,Ashok Nagar

Board team led by the Area Engineer andDepot Engineer of Ward 136 for the surpriseraid resulting in the detection of the illegalwater tapping.

Illegal tapping of metro water has been goingon unabashedly for a number of years and onlywhen the residents make complaints aboutthe inadequate supply, the Metrowater Dept.takes action.

In most of the streets in T. Nagar thereare many commercial establishmentsproviding accommodation for their employees. If the residents find supply of metro water to beinadequate, it is likely due to illegal tapping ofwater. Theresidents should immediately informthe Area Engineer concerned for immediateaction. Motilal Street Residents’ WelfareAssociation, 31, Motilal Street, T. Nagar
