Make Mine Manufactured
Brief Description This lesson will explore how an agricultural commodity – milk – can be used to
produce a natural product that can be renewable instead of a similar product manufactured from a non-renewable resource such as oil
Activity 1 – Renewable vs Non-Renewable Make a list of the renewable Florida resources and non-renewable
Florida resources
There is a Power Point with some of these items that will be on our website
Why is it important to develop products that use renewable resources and create and use recycled products?
Activity 2 – Curds and Whey Chemical vs Physical Reaction
Students will mix and heat ingredients to separate curds from whey
Activity 3 – Make Mine Manufactured Station 1 – Casein Glue
Station 2 – Plastic from milk
Station 3 – Milk Paint
Station 4 – Milk Cosmetics or Body Care
Station 5 – Milk Jug product
Students will be placed in groups and need to use given materials and make a product. They must fill out their ‘Request for Proposal’ and ‘Engineering Design Planning Sheet’ before starting their new product.
Making Plastic 1 cup milk
4 tsp vinegar
Stir slowly and gently
Curds separate from whey
Casein is the milk protein (curds)
Drain
Squeeze out extra moisture using paper towels
Shape and let dry a few days
Gardening for Nutrition
The Nutrient Database – pg 167
USDA’s “Nutrient Database” will be the focus of research to identify which foods contain necessary nutrients and which foods grown in the garden are most nutrient dense or will meet specific nutritional goals.
Activity 1 This lesson is going to show students what
nutrients fruits and vegetables have and which ones are more nutrient rich.
It will help students understand why it is so important to eat their fruits and vegetables.
Using 1 cup of carrots go through how to use the USDA Nutrient Database works http://ndb.nal.usda.gov/ndb/search/list (Page 172)
Select one fruit or vegetable from the garden that you think has the highest amount of Vitamin A, C and E and another one that has the highest amount of Magnesium, Phosphorus and Potassium. (I did this for you to save time)
Activity 2 - In your group fill out ‘Nutrients from the Garden’ handout for your fruit or vegetable
Using DRI Sample calculate what percent of your daily required intake one cup of your fruit or vegetable supplies.
Once your group has filled out the DRI sample worksheet put your information on the large sheets of paper to compare.
Activity 3 - Which fruit or vegetable is most nutritious?
If a student were deficient which fruit or vegetable would be the best for him/her?

Choose states in Pacific Coast, states in Midwest, states in Northeast and states in Southeast
Go to USDA Statistics by State http://www.nass.usda.gov/Statistics_by_State/ and print out the statistics for Florida and the states you have chosen.
Go to Super Tracker at https://www.supertracker.usda.gov/myplan.aspx and choose who you want to be and everyone will be the same for the workshop. Today we are going to be a 15 year old female, 5’4” and 120 pounds.
What you will be finding out? What are your nutritional needs?
Can they be met with only Florida agricultural commodities?
Or could your needs be met better with other regions of the US?
Get into Groups In your group you will need to look at your dietary needs and create a list of what
foods are produced in your state or region for each of the categories. For this activity we will categorize “vegetable” fruits as vegetables.
Grains Vegetables Fruits Dairy Protein Oils
Corn Green Beans Oranges Milk Beef Soybean oil
Wheat Tomatoes Strawberries Cheese Pork Sunflower oil
Blueberries Clams
Next 2 steps Each group will present their lists to see which region has the most variety and how
Florida compares.
Once you have all your food items grown in your area you are now going to create a sample menu.
Keep in mind you are a 15 year old female when you are planning food. You need to keep your calories to at least 1800 calories. She does not need to diet.
