Cinemalaya is a project of the Cinemalaya Foundation Inc., in partnership with the CCP, Econolink Investments Inc, and Film Development Council of the Philippines.

Cinemalaya was established in 2005 for the purpose of giving recognition to the best short film and full length feature film in digital video format.

The competition seeks to discover, encourage and honor the cinematic works of Filipino filmmakers that boldly articulate and freely interpret the Filipino experience with fresh insight and artistic integrity.

Many of the products of Cinemalaya—such as Solito’s Ang Pagdadalaga ni Maximo Oliveros and Adolf Alix’s Donsol —have garnered a lot of recognition from prestigious award giving bodies such as the Berlin International Film Festival and the Fort Lauderdale International Film Festival.

Both films have also been the selected as the country’s representatives in the Academy Awards in 2006 and 2007 respectively

“Mayohan” is one of ten finalists in competition (chosen from more than 200 entries) in the full-length category for the 2010 Cinemalaya Film Festival.

Mayohan begins on the first day of May; it may end in mid-June; it celebrates harvest in an agricultural and religious setting, which involves a series of novenas called the Padasal. Such devotional practice consists of nine days worth of novena, headed by the owner of the Virgin Mary statue. Participants take the statue from one house to another, where the statue temporarily stays for a day at most. Prayers are uttered in Tagalog melodiously like the pasyon.

  On the last day of the Padasal, a series of cultural events culminate on the

same night--Santacruzan and the The Tapusan or more commonly known as the Pasayaw to cap the Mayohan celebration. To organize the Pasayaw, a budget of at least Php 20k is needed. Under the leadership of the pamunuan, who invites 30-40 single women (ages 16-20's) to be handpicked by men during the pasayaw.

During the last day of the Mayohan's padasal, an event called the Pasayaw or Tapusan takes place; this usually happens right after the Sagala or Santacruzan; the Virgin Mary statue is taken to a nipa hut (made of sibi, tolda, pundasyong kawayan, and palapa) where the Pasayaw takes place.

  There is a common palakad to ensure the organization of the event;

identified by ribboned tags, several groups (veteranos/hermana, kapisanan, visitas) take their turns in the Pasayaw. Traditionally, the women have no right to refuse the men who invite them to dance.

The Mayohan to be depicted in the film happens in Infanta, one of the oldest towns in Quezon Province. It is situated in the northern part of the Quezon mainland lying along the coast of the Pacific Ocean. Facing the island municipalities of Polillio straddles a portion of the Sierra Madre Mountains. It has a total land area of 34,276 hectares and a population of 58,063.

There are 4 puroks per barangay in Infanta which has a total of 36 barangays; 7-8 puroks hold their Pasayaw at the same time. The event is usually opened by a politician's speech

In this day and age, a cultural tradition such as the Pasayaw or Tapusan becomes a political war zone (man vs woman; old vs young; rich vs poor) and fortifying a cycle of decadence instead of becoming a unifying event and a place for finding love.

May is the month dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary, mother of Christ. In Infanta Quezon, locals turn each of the 31 days of May into a charming honor not only to celebrate good harvest in their agricultural setting, but also to pay tribute to virginal virtues of the Mayohan.

  Every month of May, a padasal or series of novenas commences to mark the beginning

of Mayohan. This will culminate in a Pasayaw or Tapusan in every purok of each barangay. A system of ambagan or donation ensues for the festivities to take place.

  In the hopes of keeping a tradition alive, the elders support its continued celebration;

through the years, however, decadence has long taken over the Tapusan.   Proud beauty queens, town officials, curious participants and passersby, intoxicated

men with carnal needs all play roles in the midst of a spiritual undertaking. Some have unwittingly tarnished the event's reputation and essence. Underlying values and tokens are lost in the turning over of tradition.

  Amidst the festivities, Nińo, a 15-year old young outsider becomes the focalizer in the

preparation that the Pasayaw entails. As this orphaned teenager comes of age and deals with the loss of both parents, his attention shifts to catching the eye of Lilibeth, a 19-year old provincial lass, the elected "presidenta" of the pasayaw's pamunuan, who, herself gets lost in the hustle and bustle that transpire before May ends.

As the event underscores gender lines, generation differences, and class issues, they themselves become entangled in an unlikely partnership, in their own search for growth and acceptance.
