    music, this course is for you. General English

    is combined with music performance

    (instrumental/voice) and composition

    (songwriting/musical theatre). The course

    will also cover the history of American music,

    including jazz, blues, folk, musical

    performance, and contemporary rock.

    Course description

    In this course, students will study English in the

    context o music. The goals are to expand the

    students existing musical knowledge in English

    and to develop their existing music skills,

    culminating in the opportunity to produce and

    execute a live or recorded perormance at the

    end o the 12 weeks. The course is not meant or

    students who dont al ready know how to play aninstrument.

    Notes

    Listening to and playing music will be keycomponents throughout the 12 weeks.

    Students are asked to provide inormation ontheir level o profciency in an instrument

    and may be asked to bring their instrument

    with them.

    Topics may be changed or adapted based oninterests, music skill and language level o

    enrolled students.

    Course outline for Music Studies

    8 lessons (6 hours) each week

    Module 1: History, Styles and Progression of

    American Music (7 Jan, 8 April, 23 September

    2013)

    In this module, students will ocus on learninghow to express basic music terminology and

    concepts (that students may already know in

    their own languages) in English. Linguistic

    ocus: vocabulary, grammar (passive voice,

    expressions o purpose, clauses, determiners)

    Week 1: Language o sound Week 2: System o music notation Week 3/4: Elements o music (including,

    rhythm, tempo, scales, melody, harmony,

    chords, etc.)

    Module 3: Composition and Performance

    (4 March, 3 June, 18 November)

    In this module, students will study musical orm

    and then, synthesizing the inormation rom

    previous modules, compose and/or perorm a

    piece o music. Linguistic ocus: writing or

    speaking about the piece o music, the process

    o production, or the experience o perorming.

    Your classes in the morning will ocus on

    Listening, Speaking, Reading, Writing, Grammar,

    Pronunciation, and Vocabulary.

    Communication is the goal. Kings uses an

    integrated approach to language learning, which

    emphasizes authentic communication and is a

    more natural approach to language learning.Aer all, its how you learned your native

    language!

    You have 20 class lessons a week in the

    morning (each lesson is 45 minutes) = 15 hours.

    Aer lunch, you will have Music 4 days a week

    or 8 lessons (6 hours). In this class, you will ocus

    on Music History, Theory, Practice and

    Perormance. You will study all these things i

    you registered or the entire 12 -week course. You

    will only study some o these things i you

    registered or ewer than 12 weeks.

    Course overview

    You will have a test every Monday. I you dont

    do well on the test, you need to study the

    material again! You will have homework most

    days. I you want more homework, talk to your

    teacher or the Director o Studies.

    You can also participate in up to 4 lessons (3

    hours) of study outside of class at Kings (not at

    home or in your dorm room). This time could be

    spent rehearsing or composing.

    I your attendance is 90% or above at the end o

    your course, you will receive a certicate .
