    INTRODUCTION

    SIGHTSEEING IN THE BIG APPLE

Surrounded by Tribeca, Soho, Chinatown and

Greenwich Village, four of New Yorks most famous

neighborhoods, LSI offers students a chance to really

experience this great city. There are dozens of unique

restaurants, cafes, clubs, and shops to visit nearby.

Subway stations and bus stops are right outside the

door, so access to midtown, uptown and the

    boroughs is easy and efficient.

New York is a city of islands. It has five boroughs:

Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, The Bronx and Staten

Island. Manhattan, of course, is considered the heartof the city. About 12 miles long and 3 miles wide, it is

    full of interesting places:

Central Park, the Statue of Liberty, Rockefeller Center,

Times Square, Museum of Modern Art, the Theater

District, Wall Street, the Empire State Building

The extravagant shops and galleries of Soho, the quiet

streets of the West Village and the hustle of Canal

Street are all within easy walking distance of LSI and

attract people from around the world.

The Circle Line offers a variety of cruises that tour this

great city! All tours are narrated and showcase

    various New York attractions.

You can take a horse-drawn carriage through Central

Park, the first landscaped public park in the United

States. Stretching from 59th St. to 110th St, it is one

of the most spectacular and refreshing parts of the

city. And of course, there are the museums! The American

Museum of Natural History, Solomon R. Guggenheim

Museum, Museum of Modern Art, the Metropolitan

Museum of Art are the most famous, but there are

    many more to visit.

New Yorkers have a reputation for living life to the

fullest, and it is certainly true that the city never really

sleeps. But in spite of the fast pace and their busy

lives, people are open, friendly and ready to start up a

conversation or help someone get on the right train

    or find their way.

While many of New York Citys most famous

attractions are in Lower Manhattan, several other

neighborhoods are not to be missed. Harlem and

Spanish Harlem in Upper Manhattan as well as

Williamsburg in Brooklyn are just a few

neighborhoods that are rich in culture and are worth

    working into your itinerary.

    OVERVIEW

    Assessment

Regular review of work, weekly test results, andpersonal attention all help to improve students

    English skills.

    Interactive Classroom Techniques

The goal in our general English classes is to give

students the opportunity to practice their English.

Students develop language skills which they can use

immediately while they are in New York as well as in

their own lives when they return home again.

To make the learning process enjoyable, we use a

range of multi-media tools with a variety of teachingtechniques such as pair and group work, hands-on

activities and guest speakers. Integration of music

and art as well as off-site field trips also enriches the

students learning experience. The entire curriculum

is structured to follow a progression from level to

level. Each level requires approximately 10 weeks to

complete. New skills are introduced while existing

skills are reinforced through listening, speaking,

    reading and writing.

available to students. Students may choose betweenhomestay, hotel rooms, residence hotels or hostels.

All accommodation options are carefully selected to

ensure their quality and security. A separate

accommodations brochure is available on request.

All of LSI New York's accommodations are carefully

selected to ensure that they meet our quality

standards. We offer two types of accommodation:

    homestays and residences

    Homestay Program

Many students who attend classes at LSI New York

choose to live with American host families during

their stay. The greatest advantage of a homestay

experience is the opportunity to communicate and

interact with Americans outside of the classroom.

Our hosts provide a comfortable, furnished, private

room for the student. We offer two types of meal

plans: a half-board program that includes breakfast

and dinner and a bed and breakfast program that

    includes breakfast only.

Our Homestay Coordinator carefully selects all host

families to ensure that each students stay will be

comfortable and enjoyable. It is imperative that

students feel at home and safe while staying with

their host families. Some hosts are able to

    accommodate special dietary requirements.

    NEW YORK CITY AIRPORTS

New York City is served by three international

airports: John F. Kennedy (JFK) and LaGuardia (LGA) in

New York; and Newark (EWR) in New Jersey.

From the airport, there are three ways for students to

    reach their place of residence.

    Taxi

Outside of each airport terminal there are yellow taxis

waiting to transport passengers to their destinations.

The cost to Manhattan is approximately $60,

depending on the airport and destination. This does

not include bridge tolls or tip. It is recommended that

students who arrange their own transportation take

only yellow taxis and avoid using town cars or other

    unsolicited taxis.

    Airport Transfer

LSI arranges airport transfers for students on request.

After students claim their baggage, they should

proceed to the customs exit. There will be a driver

there holding up a sign with their name printed on it.

The driver will take the student directly to his or her

New York address. The charge is $135 each way.

    Train and MTA

AirTrain service offers transportation from JFK ($5).

From Newark, take the AirTrain from the airport to

Newark Liberty International Airport Station and then

catch the New Jersey Transit PATH train to New York

Penn Station ($15). From LaGuardia, catch a city bus

    (M60 or Q33) to the subway ($2.25).

    Hotels and Residence Hotels

We also have a selection of hotels, hostels and

residence hotels that we can recommend. Students

must make their own arrangements for these

options. Please contact us at [email protected] for more

    information

At the time of this revision, each subway and bus trip

    costs $2.25. Students can purchase 7-Day, 14-Day,

30-Day, 7-Day express bus plus and 30-Day unlimited

ride cards. These passes range from $29 to $104.

There are free transfers between the subways and

buses. Connections are available to Amtrak, Long

Island Rail Road, Metro-North Railroad, New Jersey

    Transit and PATH.

    Amtrak

Amtrak is a national train service company that offers

transportation from New York City to nearby cities

such as Washington, D.C., and Boston. Amtrak

services a wide range of destinations around the

country as well. The trains run daily and prices vary

depending on where you are traveling. All Amtrak

trains run in and out of Grand Central Station and

    Penn Station.

    Staten Island Ferry

The Staten Island Ferry takes commuters to and from

the South Ferry subway station in lower Manhattan

every day at no cost. This 5-mile, 25-minute ride also

provides a majestic view of the New York Harbor, The

Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island for free! One guide

book calls it "One of the world's greatest (and

shortest) water voyages."Subway and BusesThe New York City public transit or MTA

    (Metropolitan Transportation Authority) manages the

subways, buses, bridges, tunnels and surrounding

areas including Long Island. New York Citys extensive

24-hour subway system is the primary form of

transportation for the majority of New York

residents. Subway stations are located throughout

the boroughs of Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, and

the Bronx. Many lines and stations have both express

    and local service.

    GENERAL TRANSPORTATION

    Car

Because New York Citys public transportation systemis so comprehensive, most New Yorkers dont own a

car. But for students wanting to take a weekend trip

outside of the city, car rental agencies are available.

Remember that driving laws in New York may differ

from the ones in your home country. LSI New York

cannot assist in obtaining legal documents, Social

    Security Numbers or drivers licenses.

    ACTIVITIES

LSI organizes social events during the week, many of

which are free or at low costs. These activities give

students the chance to appreciate the ethnic

diversity of the city and include trips to the theatre,

cinema, musicals, concerts, museums, art galleries,

    sporting events and picnics.

LSI New York also works with a tour company that

specializes in weekend tours for ESL students. Tour

    destinations include Boston, Washington D.C.,

    Toronto/Niagara Falls and Philadelphia. Here,

students will find many chances to meet new friendsand practice their English skills at the same time.
