What is GreenTag SA?

Ecospecifier Global GreenTagCertTM is the largest certification system in South Africa and one of the largest globally. It is the only Certification Mark in the sector approved by the US Patents and Trademarks Office and the Australia Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) as well as green building rating tools, across the globe. Global GreenTag SA is based in Cape Town and our world renowned program is formally recognized by the Green Building Council of South Africa .

GreenTag comprises two certifications systems:

1. GreenRate™ for products relevant to Green Star SA®, Green Star® Australia and New Zealand, the Infrastructure Sustainability Council of Australia (ISCA) and HomeStar(NZ);

2. LCA Rate™ (Life Cycle Analysis) is for all manufacturers who really want to differentiate their products based on life cycle performance of their products. It is especially relevant to rating tools that engage LCA and Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) e.g. Green Star®, LEED®, BREEAM and EC3 Global’s EarthCheck programs;

Development of Global GreenTag was commenced in 2007 after manufacturers in Australia requested competition in environmental product certification. A strong foundation for GreenTag was the exemplary reputation and widespread industry use of the Ecospecifier national and international databases of verified and certified products launched in 2003 and in South Africa in 2009. GreenTag was developed with the assistance of an AUD $220,000 grant from the Queensland Government. As a Type 1 ecolabel compliant with ISO 14024, GreenTag was formed with broad stakeholder engagement, International Expert Panel and is constituted in each country with a National Advisory Committee constituted by approx. 12 representatives of academia, key manufacturing industry and professional associations, Government and community organisations and continues to be overseen by these same independent stakeholder bodies. In South Africa the AfNAC is comprised of some of the most prominent organisations and individuals in the green building sector. GreenTag was introduced to South Africa in 2012, launched in 2014 and is proud to have been the recipients of some key awards as shown below.

What is a Certification Mark? A certification mark (designated by CertTM, CM or CTM rather than TM or R ) is formally recognised within the legislative framework of a country and allows a certification body to operate a formally licensed certification scheme. This means you are able to market the health and environmental quality of your product based on the approved Standard without risk of running foul of Consumer Law requirements. The awarding of a certification mark indicates that a responsible government body has reviewed that Standard, its operation and the qualifications of its assessors. Our Certification Mark is approved in Australia and the USA and our application is underway in South Africa.

What makes GreenTag stand out from other Certification Schemes?

“Securing GreenRate certification has translated into increased sales as customers choose Armstrong ceiling products which meet the Green Star SA criteria. We see this trend continuing as the demand for high-performing sustainable buildings grows in the coming months and years.”

Jeremy Sumeray, Senior Segment Manager, Sustainability – EMEA, Armstrong World Industries Ltd

The reason for this is simple; GreenTag never compromises on standards. This means Industry accreditation programs trust and recommend us. Don’t take our word for it, GreenTag is the only product rating ecolabel and Certification Mark approved by the US Patent & Trademarks Office, the Australia Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC), numerous green building councils worldwide, and recognised by GBCSA’s Green Star SA® and other green building rating programs globally.

Other features of GreenTag include:

• Easy-to-understand and distinctive point-of-sale and product swing tags; • Easy to follow certification process; • Transparent and robust certification process; • Clear fee structure and no ongoing royalty payments; • Credible and trustworthy brand relevant in Australia and across the globe; • The only certification mark accepted across multiple market platforms; • Recognised by the green building councils of South Africa, Australia, New Zealand and Malaysia;; • The only Life Cycle Analysis (LCA) based product certification and rating system globally; • Independently verified and certified; • Mutli-award winning.

Which GreenTag is for you, or is it both? “I have been involved in many LCA projects in my time at Visy and am yet to find a peer-reviewed LCA with so many indicators at such a cost effective price. The great labeling, certification process and marketing benefits could be seen as an added bonus,”

Visy Recycling

There are two GreenTags:

• The first GreenTag called GreenRateTM has no LCA involvement – and is a straight Type 1 eco label developed

to meet the requirements of specific green building rating tools;

• The other GreenTag called LCARateTM uses LCA in the product assessment and has a separate output called an Environmental Product Declaration or EPD (a summary LCA report).

Both of these address different types of credits in different rating tools – and some products require both certifications – we help you clarify that!

Tiered Certification Marks and Label-based Scorecards GreenTag gives you more than just logos on your marketing material. Our tiered LCARate certification marks (shown in combination with GBCSA recognition level below) indicate whether your product is Platinum (world leading), Gold (excellent), Silver (very good) or Bronze (very good) quality. These marks are based on a weighted average of our six sustainability assessment criteria to produce a GreenTag EcoPOINT score. This scientific process clearly indicates your product’s performance across the assessment criteria giving your customer’s clear sustainability product performance indicators. Products that fail to achieve Bronze, will not receive GreenTag certification. Products that achieve all but Platinum ‘world leading’ are provided with areas for improvement. GreenRate Level Tags are shown on page 9.

Where a product is certified under GreenRate and LCARate, the GBCSA recognised Level rating appears on the scorecard.

Most of my clients are commercial – so why should I care about certification? Most commercial organisations have environmental and social sustainability policies, with many being recognized for their environmental performance. So more and more supply chains are being asked not only to report on their performance, but also develop eco products, particularly those in the green built environment who rely on environmental rating tools. And you can’t get recognition within many of these tools without having a recognized third party certification.

Even if your customers are not engaged with a rating tool process many major commercial organisations are responsive to the increasing ethical demands of shareholders and consumer demand for better environmental and transparency outcomes. Most organisations now publically report their corporate social responsibility and environmental achievements in order to enhance shareholder value and maintain their social licence to operate. The global ‘State of Sustainability Review 2014’ reveals double and triple digit growth across the majority of certification initiatives surveyed. The markets for certified green products is growing, is not a fad and consumers need to be able to trust certification marks and that what they are measuring is true.

Does GreenTag relate to residential buildings? GreenTag was designed to support consumers and professionals to make easier and more robust decisions about their building and interiors purchases and specifications. GreenTag is as relevant in the residential sector as any other sector. It is recognised by various multi-residential and single dwelling rating tools. GreenTag makes it simple to compare two like products; which one is healthier and more ecologically and socially sustainable.

‘Consumers and Professionals alike are looking for reliable, trusted information to assist their decision-making. GreenTag is that trusted and familiar source’

David Baggs, CEO and GreenTag Program Director

What can be certified? Any product – as long as it complies with the GreenTag Standards’ requirements, from:

• flooring to furniture, • health, beauty and hygiene products, • stationery and promotional items, • paper and packaging, • fabrics and textiles, • mattresses and bedding, • uniforms and fashion, • food and beverage containers and • commercial consumables • automotive.

There are over 900 GreenTag products under certification and being used in buildings and offices all over the world. However we currently choose not to certify food. If you want to certify a product not on this list, please contact us, the probability is that we can help. What products can have EPDs? Any product that undertakes LCARate can obtain an EPD. Products needing EPD recognition in the USA or under LEEDv4 require and enhanced ISO 21930 EPD process.

How do I make the most of GreenTag in my marketing? No matter how big or small your brand is, GreenTag certification will help it be more successful.

The more you promote your GreenTag certification the more successful it will be for you. To maximize your marketing impact, use GreenTag as the lead benefit of your product. By promoting GreenTag you are leading with credible independent credentials, something that is much harder to achieve in traditional product marketing. Also it is important that you educate your sales and marketing team on GreenTag so that they can correctly speak authoritatively about how projects apply for credits or points within the various building, interiors and infrastructure accreditation schemes. We also provide marketing opportunities. GreenTag also highlights your products in our GreenGo market connect program. Your products will be featured on globalgreentag.com, in our social networks, on ecospecifier.com.au, and other partner sites. Incorporating GreenTag into your own product and social marketing executions also reinforces the relationship and benefits. How can GreenTag reduce my marketing risk? GreenTag makes marketing your products and their performance intuitively simple. But any organisation marketing their green credentials and products needs to comply with the South African Consumer Law 2011 guidelines on honesty in marketing. This is where GreenTag gives you a decided advantage and mitigates your risk of prosecution. GreenTag certification becomes the proof that your claims are correct, provided we have approved the wording in advance, we will stand behind the claims. Your marketing risk is also reduced by making your clients’ jobs easier and project management more efficient by promoting your GreenTag Certificates and EPDs. One single pdf is all they need to provide the evidence they need to comply with rating tool compliance. Combinations of various GreenTag certifications are recognised by GBCSA at one of three levels.

What is the process and how long will it take? Once you have the completed application process and all your product documentation and answered subsequent questions, the process only takes 4-6 weeks for GreenRate and 4-6 months for LCARate (this is a more in-depth process). Below are the two different process flows. At each stage we keep you posted on how your application is going and let you know immediately if there are any issues.

GreenRate Process Application 1: The applicant requests and completes the GreenTag Scoping Questionnaire and GreenTag provides Initial Conformance Assessment indicative of feasibility of Approval and prepares proposal. GreenTag Proposal: Is provided, accepted by Applicant and invoice requested by Applicant. Invoice is prepared and issued by GreenTag along with Information Request and Declaration templates and data gathering instructions. Application 2: Payment received and completed Declarations, Agreements and Data Requests submitted digitally in accordance with detailed Guidelines provided at invoice stage. Submission Review: Continues until Applicant notified all questions answered and all data is complete. Remote and Onsite Audits: Where feasible remote audit is undertaken. Onsite & international audits are undertaken by major International Audit Partners such as SGS, DNV and Bureau Veritas, from one of nearly 2000 local offices in the country of audit. The Auditor undertakes the onsite audit to GreenTag detailed brief. Conformance to GreenTag Standard confirmed: Licensed Marks & Certificate prepared and Draft Product Assessment Report (PAR) provided for Applicant approval. Once Applicant has approved the PAR and all GreenTag Licensing signed off, and Customer Survey completed, Certification Marks, Graphics and Certificates are issued with ‘GreenTag Style Guide’ and ‘Rules for Use of the Mark’. Audit & Surveillance cycle: Audit cycle is every fourth year, but surveillance is annual, spot declarations required if changes made or detected by GreenTag. GreenRate Assessment Time: Once all data is submitted and confirmed to be correct and complete by Project Certifier, GreenRate Certification can be completed within 4-6 weeks. In extreme circumstances this may be able to be reduced on request.

LCARate Process Is the same as the GreenRate Process except for the following: Application 2: Applicant must also submit full description of manufacturing process and gather detailed manufacturing data on resources used to manufacture a functional unit (e.g. unit, Kg, tonne, or m2 basis). In LCA terms this is called ‘Gate to Gate’ LCI Data Submission. On submission data is reviewed by GreenTag Certifier, questions submitted and further data received for review. Review continues until Applicant is notified all questions answered and all data is complete. Life cycle inventory (LCI) development: Consultants prepare LCI for use in the LCA and provide EPD for peer review. Once Peer Review is complete and submitted to GreenTag, Audit is commissioned if required. Remote and Onsite Audits: Remote audit/s are undertaken in conjunction with onsite audits by major International Audit Partners such as SGS, DNV and Bureau Veritas, from one of nearly 2000 local offices in the country of audit. The Auditor undertakes the onsite audit to GreenTag detailed brief. Where Applicant already has audited LCA data an additional audit may not be required. Conformance to GreenTag Standard confirmed: Licensed Marks & Certificate prepared and Draft Product Assessment Report (PAR) and EPD provided for Applicant approval. Once Applicant has approved PAR and EPD, all GreenTag Licensing requirements are signed off and Customer Survey completed, Certification Marks, Graphics and Certificates are issued with ‘GreenTag Style Guide’ and ‘Rules for Use of the Mark’. International Use of GreenTag LCARate and EPDs: LCARate certification can be used globally if the Mark is recognised. If ISO 14040 and ISO 14044 LCA or ISO 14025 EPD compliance is required, region specific transport, energy and peer review may be required (e.g. by LEED, BREEAM, DGNB etc.). This will be subject to further quotation on request.

Commercial and residential building The commercial green built environment is being led by members of the World Green Building Council. Many of these GBCs administer voluntary environmental building rating systems award points or credits to projects using green certified products. Some GBCs also administer residential rating systems. South Africa The Green Building Council of South Africa (GBCSA) administers Green StarSA® and the same benefits afforded GreenTag in Australia and New Zealand also apply in South Africa. However, GBCSA’s new Interiors v1 Tool recognises GreenRate and GreenRate/LCARate combined certifications. LCARate is still under consideration. Australia In Australia, the Green Building Council of Australia (GBCA) administers the Green Star® national building rating system. Rating tools assess the environmental sustainability of building projects at the design, construction and as built phases (Green Star®- Design & As Built), operational phase (Green Star® – Performance) and interior fitout (Green Star® – Interiors).

GreenRate certification contributes to VOC and Formaldehyde Reduction credits. It also relates to all products in all interiors under the Interiors v1 ‘Sustainable Products’ credit.

There are also a range of older Tools launched since 2009 dealing with Interiors or with Interiors components (Green Star® – Office Interiors, Education, Multi-unit residential, Public Buildings and Health.

GreenRate certification contributes to a number of Materials Calculator credits relating to furniture, chairs, workstations, tables, storage, flooring, walls, assemblies, partitions and ceilings as well as VOCs and Formaldehyde Reduction credits. These older tools are being phased out by the end of 2015. Cleaning Products: GBCA recognizes the GreenTag Cleaning Products Standard for its Performance Tool.

All of these tools now have a ‘Comparative Life Cycle Impact’ credit or in the case of the newest tools, Design & As Built v1 and Interiors v1, an alternative compliance pathway that benefits products with Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) such as those produced by GreenTag’s LCARate program. New Zealand The Green Building Council of New Zealand administers the commercial building rating system, Green Star®, and the domestic dwelling certification tool, Home Star NZ. Both of these rating systems automatically accept the GreenTag certification marks so that projects using GreenTag receive maximum available points for the level certified.

International The British Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method (BREEAM International) is in the UK and over 40 countries. BREEAM International is administered by BRE and acknowledges GreenTag’s ISO 14025 Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs). The US Green Building Council (ISGBC) administers Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEEDv4) and GreenTag EPDs support this commercial building rating system. There are LEED certified projects in over 134 countries and with 15,000 certified and 35,000 registered projects worldwide. India The Indian Green Building Council operates rating tools that recognise third party certification and is currently evaluating GreenTag for recognition. China TGT/EMF Consortium has signed an MoU to operate GreenTag under licence in Mainland China. Singapore The Building Construction Authority (BCA) operates the Green Mark building rating scheme and is currently evaluating GreenTag for recognition. Malaysia The Malaysian Green Building Confederation (MGBC) has signed a MoU to operate GreenTag under licence in Malaysia. The Malaysian Government’s Green Technology Corporation has approved GreenTag as a certifier for their MyHIJAU (My GREEN) tax incentivized labelling program launching in 2015. Other sectors

Infrastructure Australia & New Zealand The Infrastructure Sustainability Council of Australia (ISCA) operates the ‘IS’ tool in both countries that recognises both GreenTag GreenRate and LCARate certifications to certify any product involved in transport and other infrastructure projects. Hospitality, Conference and Exhibition Sector International Globally, GreenTag’s LCARate and Cleaning Products Standards are the Preferred Certification Systems for the EC3 Global ‘EarthCheck’ hospitality sector certification program in nearly 70 countries.

Beauty, Health and Hygiene Product Markets International GreenTag also certifies beauty, health and hygiene products and is recognised by ACCOR South Pacific Hotel Group purchasing processes.

Blue Economy GreenTag is the world’s first product ‘net positive’ metric. Manufacturers and Projects looking to measure how much a product ‘puts back’ can use their GreenTag EcoPOINT score to measure how much positive contribution any product is making in key sectors such as Greenhouse Gases, Biodiversity and Toxics. Hint: look for a negative EcoPOINT score.

• 28 Level A schemes 100% of Credit Points • 8 Level B schemes and 75% of Credit Points • 8 Level C schemes 50% of Credit Points

The other GBCA recognised schemes have, at most, 1 or 2 Level A or B schemes, some have only 1 Level A or B and some only 1 Level A scheme. Only Level A Certified Products will achieve full points under the Materials Calculator or the new ‘Sustainable Products’ credits. All the older tools are currently being phased out, and will cease operation at the end of 2015. This makes GreenRate the most flexible at recognizing your existing achievements in ecological, health and social sustainability in the process of being certified against relevant Green Star®* Sustainable Product, Materials Calculators and IEQ VOC and Formaldehyde Minimisation credits. LCARate is recognised for certification of Post Consumer Recycled Content Credits in relevant tools and LCARate EPDs comply with the standards inherent in the ‘Comparative Life Cycle Analysis’ credit that is an alternative compliance pathway to the ‘Sustainable Products credit’ both worth a massive 19 points. The project pictured here is an iconic examples of a 6 Star Green Star (equivalent to LEED Platinum) projects with interiors that make a substantial use of GreenTag certified products. Green Star® Design & As Built v1: (Australia) The Green Building Council of Australia ‘Design & As Built’ rating tool also covers all building types and all product types. The tool is a revolutionary because:

i. it introduces third party certification and EPD relevance to all construction products; and

ii. for the first time, a whole of project Life Cycle Analysis Alternative Pathway is introduced as a replacement for the entire Materials category.

The new Product Transparency and Sustainability Credit uses a ‘Sustainability Factor’ to recognize differential credit points for heightened transparency and improved sustainability via recognised third party certification. All levels of GreenRate are recognized. Product EPDs are also recognized, with LCARate EPDs compliant with the credit requirements. LCARate EPDs also comply with the Whole of Project LCA Alternative Compliance Pathway requirements. Design & As Built also ensures buildings being rated must proceed to As Built certification to obtain certification, hence increasing the likelihood that certified products relied on at the application stage will be ones used in actual project.

Whole Project LCA Innovation Challenge (Australia) All Green Star® tools except Design & As Built now include Green Star® Innovation Challenges are another new concept, and a break away from existing credits. The Challenges that impact products relate to Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) of buildings and products and its reporting via summary LCA or EPDs. The significance of these credits are the large number of unweighted credit points available that can make the difference between a whole star category for the project. Project Materials Life Cycle Impacts This Innovation Challenge aims to encourage project teams to perform whole-of-life LCA of their buildings (and interiors) and to demonstrate that their project performs better in most impact categories without any negative tradeoffs. To achieve this, project teams require LCA data from their suppliers. The attractiveness of the 6 new credit points for this Challenge means a dramatic increase in interest in LCA and products that have undertaken LCA. Materials Life Cycle Impacts - Provides projects up to 2 new credit points for products with an EPD. The LCA Data that project teams require from suppliers is in the form of EPDs. GreenTag LCARate Reporting provides Green Star® compliant EPDs. Each GreenTag LCARate product LCA is conducted in accordance with ISO 14040 & ISO 14044 and each product EPD is reported in accordance with ISO 14025, as required by Green Star® credit requirements. For further major initiatives relating to projects requiring EPDs see the ‘Barangaroo’ feature following.

Green Star® Performance –Existing Buildings Operation Ratings (Australia) The new Green Star® Performance tool is a new concept, a break away from existing tools, it is intended for established buildings at all levels of performance as a new low cost way of improving their long term performance via rating tool certification. New Credits and new categories of relevant certified products will allow GreenTag to support a whole array of new products. Existing buildings are rated from 1-6 Stars thereby encouraging all buildings to participate and dramatically expanding the range of certified product options for major consumable, maintenance and refurbishment products. For the first time Green Star® Performance rated buildings can opt for a Green Cleaning credit that requires certified cleaning products. GreenTag’s Cleaning Product Standard is recognised to certify products under this credit.

LEED® v4

The US Green Building Council’s (USGBC) Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) is geographically the world’s most successful green building rating tool with certified projects in over 135 countries and more than 15,000 certified and 35,000 registered projects. It is the dominant scheme in USA, Canada, Mexico, China, India and many other countries. Until recently, LEED has not had robust materials credit standards. However, LEED Version 4.0 launched in Nov. 2013 introduced credits that can be facilitated by GreenTag Certification, LCA and EPDs.

The following credits in the Materials and Resources category are potentially met by GreenTag EPDs and toxicity assessment.

i. Building Life Cycle Impact Reduction (support) ii. Building product disclosure and optimization

credits:

• EPDs (2pts) • Material ingredients (2pts) • Sourcing of raw materials (2pts)

GreenTag is currently in negotiations with USGBC about potential of GreenTag in several LEEDv4 credits.

BREEAM® International The British Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method (BREEAM) system has over 200,000 buildings certified and around one million registered for assessment in the UK and over 40 other countries since it was first launched in 1990. It has three types of tools, UK centric tools, BREEAM Gulf (Middle East) and BREEAM international bespoke tools for other countries who wish to develop their systems based on BREEAM. BREEAM has a variety of credits relevant to GreenTag because of its LCA and Third Party Certification basis. Mat 01 Life cycle impacts ISO 14040 compliant LCA assessment of materials recognise and encourage the use of construction materials with a low environmental impact (including embodied carbon) over the full life cycle of the building. Further credit points (up to a total of 3) are available for ISO 14025 compliant Environmental Product Declarations. Mat 5: Responsible Sourcing of Materials Up to 4 credit points are available for responsible sourcing. This is demonstrated through auditable third party certification schemes such as GreenTag. BREEAM now formally recognises the GreenTag EPD Program and its EPDs for these credits.

How much does it cost? Full GreenTag certification is both GreenRate and LCARate undertaken together. There are significant financial and certification outcome benefits in applying for both simultaneously. This approach is the best value for money. GreenRate undertaken discretely is typically cost competitive with other Type 1 ecolabels, but does not charge a turnover based fee. LCARate provides the lowest cost LCA and EPD reporting service you are likely to find and the certification is effectively a bonus! Reduced Scope Assessments Both GreenRate and LCARate can be applied for as a reduced scope assessment. This effectively means your product is assessed only as either or both, GreenRate Level C or LCARate Bronze. These are the lowest cost options. To find out how much an assessment of your product or products will cost, please complete the Application Scoping Questionnaire at the back of the document

Consumables: Health & Hygiene As an LCA based certification system, Global GreenTag is a Standard with high levels of additional rigor when it comes to health and eco-toxicity issues, which apply across all sectors. In some instances, sector specific standards are required to ensure higher performance requirements are in use for critical applications such as ‘on skin’ application. In addition to Building and Hospitality Sectors, the Global GreenTag Standard already relates to many other product sectors such as: The most recent standards introduced by Global GreenTag are: Personal Products This standard sets out the standards for health, beauty and hygiene products including:

• sun protection, • cosmetics and skin care, • hair, eye and nail care, • baby care • dental care products; as well as • men’s care • aged care products.

The Apelles Range of shower amenities and skin care products by Vanity Group (Sydney, Los Angeles, Shanghai, Dubai, Singapore) and the DWS range by BUNZL Outsourcing (International) are the first ranges to be certified under this new standard. Cleaning Products In response to green building council requirements for Certified Cleaning products and consumer concerns about how to know what products are truly healthy and environmentally preferred, Global GreenTag Cleaning Product Standard sets out the requirements for a wide range of cleaning products including:

• cleaners and detergents; • sanitizers & disinfectants; • enzyme based products; • wipes and scourers; • microfibre systems; • mechanical equipment; • activated water cleaners; • air fresheners • sanitary paper

The GOJO International Purell brand of hand sanitizers is the first hygiene range to be certified under this new standard with a novel silver based MRSA/VRE surface cleaner Ridov by SDI Group also under certification.
