It’s designed to bring out local musical tal- ents for Oakville audiences, with performances taking place every Sunday afternoon from 12 – 2 p.m. Café owner CJ Martin has made it a priority to showcase the talents of local artists, and wanted to add a series to give musicians a chance to showcase their talents as well. The series has five musicians booked so far, for six Sundays in March and May. Since April is national Poetry Month, the Sunday Singer/Songwriter Series will take a break in April to let poets take the stage. Jenn Ryan will kick off the Singer/Songwriter series on March 10, a folk artist preparing to release her debut EP, Out in the Open, in May. Heidi Crocini, an acoustic musician, is on tap for March 18, with classical guitarist Trevor Burt following her for the Sunday March 25 perform- ance. Other scheduled artists include Rob Birmingham and 16-year-old Maggie Szabo. Martin made connections to the music com- munity with the help of John Marlatt, who owns the Moonshine Café on Kerr St., which also showcases local talent. "We are very supportive and cooperative with each other," says Martin. "It’s not like we’re com- petition. People who want to go out at night and enjoy a few drinks while watching music can go to the Moonshine. People who want to go out on a weekend afternoon and enjoy some lunch or a coffee while watching music can come to CJ’s. We both have a commitment to making Oakville more creative and culturally vibrant, and we're both members of the Oakville Arts Council, and it's great to work together." Singer/Songwriter Series sheds spotlight on local talent Series starts Sunday at CJ’s Cafe West End Studio Theatre (W.E.S.T.) is running its March Break Camp 2007. Led by experienced actor and direc- tor Yo Mustafa, the camp runs Monday March 12 to Friday March 16 from 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. The class size is capped at 25 for kids ages seven through 16. At the camp, students will learn about theatre performance, acting, movement, mime, improvisation and more, and will experience live theatre. Students are required to bring a lunch to the camp. To sign up, call Yo Mustafa at 905- 845-WEST (9378). The cost is $200 for the week. W.E.S.T. has March Break theatre camp The Cornell University Chorus – a 60- member female choir – will perform at Oakville’s Saint Andrew’s Roman Catholic Church on Saturday, March 17 at 7:30 p.m. Under the direction of guest conduc- tor Katherine FitzGibbon, the New York- based chorus is on a nine-day tour of Ontario and Quebec. Founded in 1921 as the Cornell Women’s Glee Club, the Cornell University Chorus is the college’s pre- mier treble voice ensemble and has earned a prominent place among the nation’s choirs. The group performs a repertoire rang- ing from African folk music to Mozart masses. Since 2003, the Chorus has also been annually commissioning new works from women composers setting texts by women writers. Cornell University Choir performs March 17 www.oakvillebeaver.com
