BC Ferries sailing reductions to save $18.9 million will go ahead largely as announced last year, with some “refining” to come after hearing public concerns, Transportation Minister Todd Stone said Wednesday.
Stone released the final report on consultation with coastal communities, confirming that despite public objections, low-utilization sailings on minor routes across the system will be stopped by April 28.
Final schedules are to be released by the end of March.
Stone said some routes have the option of eliminating mid-day sailings so they can retain early-morning and late evening routes used by people going to work or taking in
events. BC Ferries will meet with community representatives to examine those options, although Stone acknowledged that union contracts restrict possible savings from splitting up the service day.
Surveys showed most opposed, but seniors will lose their long-standing free ride on Monday through Thursday sailings.
BC Ferries will also go ahead with a pilot program of slot machines on one of the major routes, another idea panned by most of the public.
Stone said “tough decisions” were necessary to maintain the long-term viability of the ferry service, which has seen declining ridership, rising fares and a federal and provincial subsidy that reached $200 million this year.
“None of this
should come as a surprise,” he said.
Stone cited examples of unsustainable ferry service, including a Monday night sailing from Skidegate to Alliford Bay that averages one passenger
and one vehicle.NDP ferry critic
Claire Trevena said cutting mid-day sailings to save
morning and evening runs isn’t much of a solution, because it shifts traffic to peak times where ferries
may be overloaded.“It’s going back to
communities to say, OK, do you want to lose your left hand
or your right hand,” Trevena said.
The only significant route change announced as a result of public objections is an increase of the summer sailing from Bella Coola to Bella Bella from one run a week to three. BC Ferries is going ahead with elimination of the run from Port Hardy to the central coast, which has been marketed as a circle tour from the Lower Mainland to Vancouver Island to the B.C. Interior.
BC Ferries said it will announce another customer response survey next week.
The consultation report has been posted online at www.coastalferries engagement.ca.

The B.C. government will appeal a B.C. Supreme Court ruling ordering a return to 2002 classroom rules, Education Minister Peter Fassbender announced Tuesday.
Fassbender said the latest ruling could potentially cost the B.C. government more than $1 billion, which he called “completely unaffordable for taxpayers.” But the appeal will focus on Justice Susan Griffin’s interpretation of the constitution to union negotiations.
“Governments have to be able to govern,” Fassbender said, adding that no other province has has such restrictions on school organization.
“Most importantly, if the real goal is to benefit students, decades of academic research has shown that blankest reductions in class size are of little benefit,” he said.
BCTF president Jim Iker estimated that another 600 teachers would have to be hired to meet the terms of the latest court decision. In Surrey school district alone, there should be 18
teacher librarians, 19 teacher-counsellors, 51 more specialist education teachers and 80 English language teachers, he said.
“We want to negotiate a deal at the bargaining table,” Iker said. “We hope that the government comes and bargains with us in good faith – that’s so important – but
we all know that to achieve an agreement, government has to bring the necessary funding to make that deal happen.”
The dispute with the B.C. Teachers’ Federation revolves around the government’s unilateral removal of class size and support staff rules from the
union contract in 2002. In her first ruling in 2011, Griffin gave the government a year to remove the offending legislation and negotiate class size and specialist teacher support as a working condition for teachers.
Griffin’s second ruling came Jan. 28, ordering $2 million in damages to be paid to the B.C. Teachers’ Federation for what she described as bargaining in bad faith, and striking down parts of the latest legislation.
Fassbender said talks over the past year have included class size and specialist support.
“We’ve increased supports for students with special needs, including a 36 per cent increase in the number of full-time education assistants,” he said. “Average class sizes are near historical lows of 19.3 students for kindergarten, 21.5 for grades one to three, 25.7 for grades four to seven, and 23.0 for grades eight to 12. To put that in perspective, in 1970 the average class size was 42.”
Fassbender said the ministry’s “learning improvement fund,” established after Griffin’s first ruling, dedicated $210 million toward the disputed class supports. It funded 500 new teachers, 400 new special education assistants and increased hours for another 7,400 assistants, he said.

We’re all familiar with the “toughen up” language of most sports. We’re told to “suck it up,” “push through the pain” and beat pain through “mind over matter.”
While this mindset may help an elite few land a spot on an Olympic podium (almost certainly to be followed several years later by chronic joint, tendon and/or muscle issues), for most of us it’s simply a recipe for injury. Equally dangerous for athletes and non-athletes alike are comments like “Oh, it will go away” or “I’m just getting old.”
Pain is a red flag that indicates your body is not in homeostasis, or a balanced, functioning state. It
means something is irritated and needs your attention, and it shouldn’t be ignored. The more quickly you seek treatment, the
less damage will be done and, generally speaking, the shorter the time needed for treatment.
If you’re not sure what’s causing the pain, your first line of defence
is your GP. He or she should be able to pinpoint which of your body’s systems is being affected and suggest a course of treatment.
If your pain and/or dysfunction is stemming from soft tissue (i.e. muscles, tendons, ligaments, cartilage, bursa, etc.), massage therapy should be one of the first treatments suggested.
More than 700 soft tissue conditions can
be treated effectively with massage therapy, either stopping the pain cycle completely or as part of a broader pain management treatment plan.
Here’s one more adage to remember: “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.” Regular massage therapy can also keep healthy muscles and ligaments supple and free from restrictions that could turn into problem areas.
Add to that the known stress-busting benefits of massage and you’ve turned your recipe for disaster into a recipe for healthy living – no referral required!
