Councillor backs call for extended bus service by Belinda Cullen-Reid

Selwyn District Councillor Sam Broughton is backing a call by west Selwyn residents for the extension of the Darfield to Christchurch bus service.

The service run by the Red Bus company in Christchurch currently has one run leaving Darfield at 7.15am with the return trip leaving Christchurch at 5.30pm with stops at Kirwee, West Melton, Yaldhurst and Riccarton. It was agreed at last week’s Malvern Community Board

meeting to action Cr Broughton’s suggestion that the board write a letter to the Red Bus company supporting the extension of the existing service.

Cr Broughton told The Record that well used reliable public transport is a better use of resources and causes less

congestion than everyone driving their own car.

“A once a day service caters well for those working in town but doesn’t take into account people wanting to shop or visit friends during the middle of the day.”

The Burnham Vege Co-op is a hub of

the Christchurch South Fruit and Vege

Co-op and has been running since the

end of 2012.

Co-op member Kezia Tapsell said they

created the Burnham hub as they had

been placing approximately six orders

a week for people out here in Burnham

through a Hornby hub.

“We thought the best thing would be

to start our own hub,” Ms Tapsell said.

Ms Tapsell and Keryn Paekau

organised the hub by creating a bank

account for members to deposit money

for orders and a Facebook page where

people can get updates.

“We now have approximately 30

people who are part of our hub and

average 25 orders a week. Some

people only order fortnightly and some

packs are shared between two smaller

families,” Ms Tapsell said.

She said anyone can join the hub and

it is especially good for those who want

to have healthy food for their families

on a budget.

To join the Burnham hub members

need to be available to help with packing

produce and collecting it from Hoon Hay

once every eight to ten weeks.

“We have lots of different families

who are part of our hub, including

mothers who work full time, part time

or are stay at home mothers, or single

mothers, but they all manage to make

it work.

Small pockets of Selwyn communities are making it more affordable for families to eat healthy food

with the introduction of Vege Co-operative hubs.

“We have one family from Leeston,

one from Rolleston and one from

Broadfield too, so we don’t really mind

if you aren’t living in Burnham you just

need to be able to work with the way

we run it.” The Rolleston Vege Co-op has been

running since June 2013, according

to Adrienne Harold Braam who set up

the hub with her daughter Tammy after

they had seen the success of a hub

run through their church in Hornby. “We

enjoyed and benefitted from the low

cost of the packs — $20 value for only

$10 — and wanted to make the produce

packs available in the local Rolleston

area to help others. We were also keen

to get to know more people in the local

area,” Ms Harold Braam said.

She said the Rolleston Vege co-op

has members who are willing to donate

time to help others who cannot volunteer

because of different circumstances

such as disability or ill health.

“Some members also pay for produce

packs for families in need.”

Gardners turn hands to Lego

The Rolleston Relay for Life committee is putting the final touches to this year’s event which will be held at the Rolleston Rugby Club grounds over the weekend of February 22 and 23.

The de Vries family of Rolleston has combined its passion for Lego and gardening to raise money for the Weedon’s School Garden Club.

Committee members Jenny Harkerss said through the relay, we celebrate the lives of cancer survivors and caregivers, remember loved ones we have lost, and empower people and communities to fight back against cancer.

“Relay for Life is an inspiring community event for people of all ages and fitness levels.

“At Relay, teams of 10 or more camp out overnight and take part in a walk/run relay while enjoying a family-friendly atmosphere with entertainment, prizes and lots of fun.

“Because it’s a team event, people taking part may come and go as they like, but it’s so much fun, you’ll find it hard to leave.”

Each year, more than 20,000 people take part in Relays across New Zealand.

The Opening Ceremony for Rolleston’s Relay for Life will be held at 4pm on Saturday, February 22 with a celebration lap completed by cancer survivors and their carers.

Members of the Ellesmere Highland Pipe Band will lead the lap with vintage and classic cars available for the survivors who are unable to complete the lap on their own.

Following this the 12 plus teams will be introduced and complete their first lap together.

During the rest of the relay, while at least one member of each team is on the track, people will be entertained

The family has held a Lego display at their house which was open to the public with almost $630 raised for the club.

With Lego models and displays by each family member, other garden club members and invited guests, an impressive and diverse array of Lego was on display.

Rachel de Vries leads the garden club which her children Amelia and Ryan are both part of. The club meet at school lunch times.

“We have four raised garden beds at present. We have lots of kids in the club so we need more garden beds,” Ms

We are currently in an open fire season.

Council staff are monitoring the fire risk on a daily basis and fire restrictions will be introduced if required.

What’s allowed?Outdoor fires are not allowed in urban areas, other than gas barbeques,

hangis and umus. Currently in rural areas fires are permitted but you shouldfollow safe burning guidelines. If you are planning to light a fire:

• never do so in high winds or if high winds are forecast• always have a water source and fire fighting tools on hand to put out the fire• have an appropriate fire break in place for your type of fire, and• stay with the fire at all times and dial 111 if it gets out of control

There are a number of other conditions which must be met before firescan be lit – visit selwyn.govt.nz/fire to read these. In high country and

hill areas a permanent restricted fire season is in place.

If you have any burning, such as tree debris, that can be done at a later time then it is best to wait and burn when conditions are greener.

Rockwood Station opens its gates by Cindy Driscoll

The Lake Coleridge/Windwhistle area has a large array of walks open to the public and Rockwood Station, nestled in the Malvern Hills 15 minutes from the Rakaia Gorge, is the newest addition.

Station owners Ben and Cheryl Richards are celebrating the re-establishment of the Rockwood Bushwalk with an open day this month.

The tranquil bush walk through the black beech forest has an abundance of native flora and fauna with an array of native birds. The track winds its way through the bush climbing gently to 400 metres above sea level and takes about 45–60 minutes.

Ben Richards said their family has been connected to Rockwood for over 100 years.

“As we have developed the bushwalk and garden we have discovered quite a few historical treasures which allow us to see how the property was 100 years ago and how it has evolved.

“With the help of the Hororata Parish we have restored the family graves which were hidden in a mess of overgrown bush. It is thought to have been one of the first public cemeteries in Canterbury dating back to the 1800s.”

Those who don’t want to do the full walk can still enjoy the native bush on a five minute walk from the homestead to the graves or simply wander the nearly four acres of woodland gardens which are under development.

“The homestead gardens are a work in progress,” Mr Richards said.

“We have a vision of restoring a lily pond, creating avenues through the trees and generally enhancing the natural beauty surrounding us by nurturing the native plants, as a backdrop to new

Cr Broughton saw the extended service being beneficial for people without driver’s licences and those who did not like driving in heavy traffic.

He said the service would need to run at times that best suited people, such as weekends for young people. The service would also need to be economically viable for the bus company.

“People have mentioned they would use a service that was at better times for them. The only way to find out if it would be used is to run a trial. If the service is used then great

Malvern ward councillor Sam Broughton is backing a second bus service for Darfield

rhododendron plantings. “The open day is our way of sharing this beautiful area and we think people will enjoy the real sense of history on the bushwalk and in the gardens.”

The celebrations will include a church service on the lawns of the 100-year-old homestead, arborist demonstrations and informative talks on native plants. There will also be a small number of stalls and a Devonshire tea and a barbecue will be available on the lawns. All proceeds from the open day will benefit the Hororata Parish.

The Rockwood Bushwalk and Garden Open Day is on Sunday, February 23 from 10am to 4pm at 256 Darts Road, Windwhistle. Entry is $10 per person, children free. More information can be found at www.hororataparish.co.nz.

A word of advice about rollover clauses by Maree Gallagher, CAB Selwyn

Before you sign that one year fixed-term contract for a service, keep an eye out for a rollover clause — it could mean the difference between facing a hefty termination fee or not, if you decide to end the contract after your 12 months is up.

Adrienne signed up with a gym for a six-month term. After this period, according to the gym manager, the contract would just ‘roll over’ — that is, she would continue to have access to the facility and she’d continue to have her fees direct debited each month.

If Adrienne decided to cancel the contract before the term was up, she’d be liable for an early termination (cancellation) fee. Adrienne was super-keen to get fit so didn’t think that would be a problem for her.

After eight months Adrienne moved to another part of town and couldn’t get to that gym much, so she decided to end her contract. ”It’s no problem at all,” said the gym manager, “that’ll be $100 in early termination fees please.”

What Adrienne had failed to realise was that after the end of the first six-month term, her contract was automatically renewed for a further six months — it had rolled over. So unless Adrienne cancelled sometime between the end of the old term and the start of the new term, she’d be stung with an early termination fee.

Early termination fees are used to recover loss of income suffered by the provider, which they would have earned from you if you had not cancelled your contract.

It’s also used to recover the cost of any hardware that you may have got as part of the plan (for example, the mobile phone that you may get free with your phone plan).

A rollover clause — also known as an automatic-renewal clause — allows the provider to automatically renew your contract when the original term ends, without having to notify you in advance.What you can do

Automatic rollovers aren’t necessarily a bad thing, for example you wouldn’t want to suddenly lose your internet service at the end of the fixed term just because you didn’t get through to the call centre to renew the contract with your Internet provider. But if you don’t know about them, it might cost you.

The Consumer Law Reform Bill will hopefully address this and other issues relating to unfair consumer contract terms.

In the meantime, here are some tips to help you stay out of trouble:

• Read the contract, including the fine print. Make sure you know what it means. If necessary, ask to take away a copy of the contract so that you can show someone with legal expertise.·

• Find out how much the early termination fee is.

• If you’re looking to join a gym, try to find a gym that offers monthly contracts or no contracts. Another option is to ask whether you can pay for the term in a lump sum, rather than by monthly direct debits.

• If there’s a rollover clause in your contract, ask how they’ll notify you when the term is about to expire.

• Ask them about the process for terminating the contract if you want to do so after the initial term expires:

• How much notice will you have to give?

• Will you be allowed to transfer the contract to another person without being charged early termination fees?

• Would an early termination fee apply even after the contract rolls over?If you don’t like the answers they give you, don’t sign.

You can try negotiating with them to remove the rollover clause. If they do agree, make sure it’s in writing — for example, make sure the clause is crossed out and signed and dated by both parties.

If they refuse to remove the clause, try to find another service provider who can offer you a better deal.

Arthritis is an inflammation and degradation of the joints affecting dogs and cats, just like humans. One in five dogs will be affected by arthritis and it is the most common cause of chronic pain in dogs.

Affected joints are usually the shoulders, elbows, knees and hips and one or more of these joints can be affected at any one time.

In arthritic joints, the cartilage has degenerated with roughness or chips present and bare bone can be exposed.

Synovial (joint) fluid also loses its lubricating properties making the movement of the bones less smooth and more painful.

Risk factors for arthritis: • More common in middle-aged and older animals but can strike younger animals especially those with congenital abnormalities like hip dysplasia.

• Obese pets are more likely to be affected.

• Joints that have been injured or infected in the past are more prone to becoming arthritic. The clinical signs of arthritis usually

appear gradually and worsen over time.

Arthritis is almost always irreversible, with many of the different symptoms and behavioural changes resulting from the increased pain.

Some pets become: • Less active and sleep more than normal.

• Irritable; personality change. • Reluctant to play, walk, climb stairs or lag behind on walks.

• Lame. This is the most common sign of arthritis in dogs but is often difficult or impossible to notice in cats because they are quite good at hiding their pain.

• Painful to touch and have swelling around affected joints.

• Unable to rise easily from a rest position. If you suspect that your pet has

arthritis, schedule an appointment with your Vetlife vet to diagnose the condition and advise the best course of therapy.

Finding the right track to hang your curtains on can be a complicated decision.

Many of us inherit curtain tracks and just accept them for what they are, but believe me the wrong track will ruin the décor, destroy your curtains far quicker than anticipated and frustrate

you every time you want to pull the curtains.

Often I find undersized tracks, designed for lightweight sheers, installed incorrectly and expected to

guide heavy weight pencil gathered drapes backwards and forwards across a window every day.

These same tracks have tiny screws and are pulling out of the timber they are installed into, wreaking havoc on

the window reveal. They are also left hanging like dirty little pretzel sticks, on either side of the window with the weight of the curtains dragging on them as this style of track offers nowhere for extra support to be installed.

Another very common issue is the predominant use of cheap expandable tracks being installed for almost every other installation. Post the earthquakes many homeowners have been forced to take their existing tracks down in order to repair and repaint a room, then they reinstall the same old tacky tracks and wonder why they do not look so good because they now appear multi coloured, and they also tend to jam up when pulled because they are unable to be installed level anymore.

The older styled wooden or brass rods with rings are even more frustrating as curtains just simply do not meet in the middle on these because of the centre bracket, and often the gap at the top leaks light and drafts as the brackets are either oversized or they have been installed onto the window reveals. Cord drawn tracks are evil looking once those

well used 10-year-old cords discolour and the cords jump out of the track and hang like some old unwanted Xmas decoration along your curtain track. You feel like you need to wash your hands after closing the drapes at night. Never a good thought.

Any of these curtain track situations is frustrating enough, but when clients say to me they want lovely new drapes but intend to recycle the existing tracks I must say, I cringe.

Sometimes there is not an issue, and we can either re-cord older quality tracks, or even re install some designer tracks and rods, but more often than not, there is no way we would suggest they be reinvented let alone recycled as is. Another frustratingly awkward experience we find in the business is clients that think they have saved a

fortune by pre purchasing the tracks at a local DIY store. Or even worse they have been given someone else’s cast offs. Really, it is like pre purchasing the wheels for a new car, more often than not they will just not be the right fit or function.

I will tell you the secret now, the cost of a basic good quality track is negligible, in the overall cost of ordering new curtains; and it will be customised to suit the window shape, size and curtain fabric selected. These are really important factors for curtains to look perfect and function as expected.

Curtain tracks come in so many different design materials, shapes, colours and with some handy extra operational functions and styles. The experts know which is best for your

situation. Technical improvements keep evolving on existing key selling ranges and of course entirely new ranges are released annually.

Recently my husband and I bought a 1.5 acre paddock on which to build our dream property.

The paddock is reasonably bare, with a pine hedge bordering the south side of the property and a small picturesque stream on the eastern

border, behind which is an area of native plantings.

Our house plans came back with approval from Selwyn District Council before Christmas and to our delight building began mid-January. Our foundations are laid and frames and trusses will arrive this week. The dream is starting to take shape.

With most of the big decisions about the build made last year, we are now sitting back and enjoying watching the work happen. Our thoughts now turn to the landscaping of the property.

While I am enthusiastic about establishing trees and shrubs along the borders of the property for shelter and privacy, what I am most excited about is growing my own produce. As a keen cook, and with two lovely and ever hungry fellows to feed, the idea of living off the land as much as possible, eating fresh and wholesome home grown produce, is very appealing.

I have big dreams of vegetable, fruit and herb gardens, some pet lambs bred

for wool, and perhaps even a goat for cheese production. Having chickens roaming in the paddock and sampling their golden yolked eggs is something I really look forward to.

I discovered the term ‘potager garden’ this week in my reading and have spent time investigating this ornate form of vegetable and fruit gardening.

Potager is a French term referring to a kitchen garden with ornate design. Flowers and herbs are planted alongside vegetables to enhance the beauty of the area which is laid out with thought.

Raised beds, bricked paths and water features are all part of the design which can be in simple peasant style or as elaborate as the grand potagers from the sixteenth century Renaissance and Baroque period, of castles in Europe.

It is important to have a clear plan before you begin your potager garden. That way you can create a sense of balance and symmetry otherwise impossible if you plan as you go

The type of potager garden we aim to build will be more reminiscent of the humble peasant style, with vegetables, fruits and herbs in raised gardens set out in geometric design. We aim to include a small pergola with a table and chairs where we can sit and have a break and enjoy the products of our labours.

Also a cottage inspired style garden shed will be a practical feature which brings added character to the area. Situated at the rear of the house the potager garden will be flanked by the stream on the east, providing a tranquil soundscape.Where to begin?

Start by measuring the area of land you have for your potager garden. Usually these are situated out the back of a house as ours is, but depending on your property shape and the land you have available, there is no reason why your garden can’t be situated in a more visible place.

A potager garden is not the kind of thing you can design as you go along. The key to a great potager garden is balance and symmetry, so you’re going to have to plan in advance and get handy with the tape measure.

Draw to scale the size and shape of your area on paper. Maths paper is useful as you can use the squares to help scale the area correctly, perhaps one square could equal one inch of garden space.

Traditional designs include a circular shaped centre feature garden which sometimes has a water feature or ornate tree. From the central point pathways move out symmetrically and other small gardens are made between the pathways. Once happy with your design it’s time to get out the string and plot out the area. Adjustments can be made to the design at this point, once you actually see the width of your path areas, for example, which need to comfortably fit a wheelbarrow.

There are lots of decisions to be made. Will you have paved or grass pathways? Will the garden beds be raised or sit flush with the ground? If raised, what will the outer borders be made of? Railway sleepers, stone wall, brick, branches woven together like basketry? Box hedging can be used for gardens flush with the pathways. You are limited only by your imagination.

Once you have designed your structures, marked them out and chosen the materials needed to build them, then the hard slog begins. Ground is broken and the unnecessary grass areas removed. Structures are built to

contain the soil, and pathways laid for ease of movement between beds. If designed, the initial work setting up the potager will be rewarded by the ease of care afterward.

Don’t be in a rush to plant straight away. The importance of quality dirt can’t be underestimated so take time to nurture the soil so that it produces good crops. Soil needs to be two feet deep and well fed with compost and manure. Topping the beds with pea straw will ensure that moisture is retained in the soil.

Thoughts then turn to plantings which we will discuss next time.

The foundations are poured and the house is beginning to take shape. Now it’s easier to see what land is left, and landscaping becomes a focus

Kate’s Kitchen: artisan bread by Kate Brunner

Breaking open a crusty freshly baked loaf of bread, ripping off a piece to eat with cheese, salad or to mop up delicious juices on your plate is something you can achieve with very little effort.

This is what you do:Put the water in a large plastic

container and add the yeast and salt. It doesn’t matter if it doesn’t all dissolve.

Add in all the flour at once and stir with a wooden spoon until the mixture is uniformly wet. Don’t knead! It should only take a minute or two.

Cover loosely with a lid and leave for about 4 hours. You can place in the fridge overnight.

When ready to bake get a sheet of baking paper and sprinkle well with semolina. Sprinkle a quarter of the surface of the dough with flour and with flour on your hands grab that portion of the dough and shape by stretching the surface of the dough to the underneath, continuing until you have a round, smooth ball shape — or near enough!

It is quite a sticky dough so work quickly and don’t add heaps of extra flour.

Place on the baking paper and let it rest for 20 minutes while you heat

the oven to 230°C/450°F and place a baking/pizza stone in the oven to heat up.

Sprinkle the top of the loaf liberally with flour, slash the top with a sharp knife and slide the loaf with baking paper into the oven.

On the bottom rack place another tin with hot water. This will produce steam and help the loaf to rise with a lovely crusty outside.

It will take about 30 minutes to bake. Ten minutes before the loaf is ready remove the baking paper and slide the loaf directly onto the baking stone.

The loaf is baked when it sounds hollow when tapped on the bottom. And that’s it! Makes 4 small loaves. You can halve the recipe successfully.

Enjoy however you like, but in this instance it was shared with an accompaniment of blue cheese and freshly cracked walnuts, washed down with a lovely sweet Dulcetto and Syrah red wine.

Even if you have never made bread before or if you are a whiz at knocking up a loaf, the Artisan Loaf is a great method to try.This is what you need:

3 cups warm water — a bit above body temperature to get the yeast going

1½ tablespoons dried yeast

1½ tablespoons coarse saltSemolina6½ cups unsifted, all purpose flour:

The flour should have a protein content of 10% (read the labelling) and you measure the cup by scooping up the flour and levelling off the top with the back of a knife.
