La Universidad de Cantabria(UC) es una de las tres universi-dades presentes durante los últi-mos tres años entre las 10 mejo-res en los principales rankingsespañoles, tanto de calidaddocente como investigadora.
Es una institución pública ymoderna, cuyo principal objeti-vo es contribuir al progresosocial a través de su compromisocon la excelencia docente y cien-tífica.
La UC cuenta con un amplioabanico de titulaciones, entreestudios de grado, posgrado ydoctorado. Desde su creación en1972, ha formado a más de40.000 universitarios. La UCpone a disposición de sus alum-nos toda una serie de recursosque les permiten adquirir unaformación integral. Sus planesde estudios buscan en este con-texto un equilibrio entre prácti-ca y teoría, que el alumno puedeenriquecer con diversos servicioscomplementarios: prácticas enempresas, puntos de acceso anuevas tecnologías, programasde intercambio con universida-des extranjeras, actividades deorientación y tutoría, etc.

El campus de la Universidad deCantabria se reparte entre San-tander, capital de la ComunidadAutónoma, y Torrelavega, locali-dad situada a 20 kilómetros. Estaregión de seiscientos mil habitan-tes, bañada por el mar Cantábri-co y atravesada por una cordilleramontañosa, ofrece innumerablesopciones para la práctica deldeporte, el turismo, el disfrute dela gastronomía y una amplia acti-vidad cultural.
La Historia ha dotado a Canta-bria de un rico patrimonio artís-tico y cultural repartido porvillas, pueblos, yacimientosarqueológicos y monumentos quebrillan con luz propia. Esta regiónalberga las pinturas rupestres dela cueva de Altamira y otrasnueve de singular valor declara-das Patrimonio de la Humanidadpor la UNESCO. También ofreceestimables vestigios de distintasépocas históricas, desde la roma-nización, hasta el Gótico y elBarroco, o la particular improntaarquitectónica de los emigrantesindianos.
La economía cántabra es diná-mica y cuenta con una importan-te industria en la que destacan lasiderúrgica, alimentaria, químicay el transporte. La región destacapor un sector turístico en alzaque atrae todo el año a ciudada-nos españoles y extranjeros. Enlos últimos años, la región haexperimentado un veloz desarro-llo de la I+D+i a través de centrosde investigación punteros en el
mundo en áreas como la biome-dicina, la física, la ingenieríahidráulica y la energía, las tecno-logías de la información, y otros.
La ciudad de Santander es unatranquila ciudad costera que gozade un atractivo ambiente estival,cultural y de ocio.

The University of Cantabriacampus is divided between San-tander, the capital of theAutonomous Region ofCantabria and Torrelavega, atown located 20 kilometers fromthe capital. This region, wich has600,000 inhabitants is on theshores of the Cantabrian Seaand is crossed by a mountainrange. It offers countless optionsfor the practice of sports,tourism, gastronomy and a widecultural activity.
History has provided a richartistic and cultural heritagewhich can be found in towns,villages, archaeological remainsand historical buildings whichare outstanding in their ownright. It is here that we find theworld- famous Altamira paintings and another nine cavesnamed Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity byUNESCO. It also offers the remarkable remains of differenthistoric periods, from Romansto Gothic and Baroque styles,plus the singular architecturalstyle of the “Indianos”, adventurers who returned fromLatin America.
Cantabria’s economy isdynamic and it confers animportant industry in whichiron and steel, the chemical andfood industry all stand out, aswell as transport. The regionalso has a tourist industry thatattracts national and interna-tional visitors throughout the
whole year. During the past fewyears, Cantabria has experiencedswift R&D development throughleading research centers in theworld in areas such as biomedi-cine, physics, hydraulic engineering and energy, ITC,and others.
Santander is a peaceful coastalcity that enjoys an attractivesummer atmosphere which isfull of cultural and leisure activi-ties.

Universidad jovenLa Universidad de Cantabrianació en 1972 a partir de la crea-ción de la Facultad de Medicina,la integración de varias escuelasde grado medio y la absorciónde dos centros cántabros quedependían de la Universidad deValladolid: la Facultad de Cien-cias y la Escuela Técnica Supe-rior de Ingenieros de Caminos,Canales y Puertos. Durante susmás de 40 años, la institución haido ampliando su catálogo detitulaciones, acogiendo nuevoscentros y acrecentando sus acti-vidades docentes e investigado-ras.
Desde 1996 la institucióndepende de la Comunidad Autó-noma de Cantabria, tras la des-centralización de las competen-cias del Estado en materia edu-cativa.
A Young UniversityThe University of Cantabria wasfounded in 1972 with the cre-ation of the Faculty of Medicine,the integration of various colleges of Education and thetakeover of two centres thatdepended on the University ofValladolid: the School of CivilEngineering and the ScienceFaculty. During its 40 year life-span, the institution has expanded its range of qualifica-tions, incorporating new centersand broadening its educationaland research activities.
Since 1996, the institution hasdepended on the AutonomousRegion of Cantabria, after thedecentralization of State compe-tences in Education.

Work EnvironmentMost of the campus is set in thelow-lying area of Las LlamasPark in Santander, an openspace that separates the north-ern side of the city from therural areas along the coast. DocenciaEducationExcelencia académicaEl objetivo de la Universidad deCantabria es dotar a sus alum-nos de aquellos recursos que lespermitan acceder en buenascondiciones al mercado de tra-bajo y desenvolverse en él ade-cuadamente. Con esta vocación,desarrolla varios procedimientosde evaluación de la docencia yofrece una serie de servicios quegarantizan una formación acor-de con un entorno competitivo yglobalizado.
La equilibrada proporciónentre sus cerca de 13.000 alum-nos y 1.300 profesores favorecela calidad de la enseñanza y laatención personalizada a travésde servicios de orientación yapoyo. La actividad docenteincluye sesiones teóricas y prác-ticas, apoyadas en laboratorios,programas específicos conempresas y servicios de acceso ala información impresa y elec-trónica.
El principal aval del prestigiodocente en la Universidad deCantabria reside en la trayecto-ria científica de sus profesores.Con el fin de estimular la exce-lencia académica, la UC partici-pa en los programas de la Agen-cia Nacional de Evaluación de laCalidad y la Acreditación(ANECA). En este contexto apli-ca a todas sus titulaciones unproceso de evaluación en el quelos estudiantes participan deforma activa. Asimismo, la insti-tución ha reformado ya todossus planes de estudio para inte-grarse en el Espacio Europeo deEducación Superior.
Por otra parte, la instituciónprocura una modulación ade-cuada del proceso de aprendizajea través de instrumentos com-plementarios como la oferta deactividades docentes a través delCampus Virtual, la educacióntransversal en valores y habilida-des o la múltiple oferta de for-mación en idiomas.
Academic ExcellenceThe main objective of the Uni-versity of Cantabria is to provideits students with the necessaryresources to place them in anexcellent position to enter thejob-market and to perform wellin that market. To this end, theUniversity has elaborated severalteaching assessment proceduresand offers a variety of servicesthat guarantee an educationwhich is in keeping with a com-petitive and global context.

In the 2011 National Assess-ment, eleven UC doctoral pro-grammes obtained the Mentionof Excellence conferred by theMinistry of Education, Cultureand Sport and another four pro-grammes received a positivereport from the ANECA.

Outstanding in ResearchThe University of Cantabria is aleader in research, as is demon-strated by several competitivestudies analyzing general and spe-cific aspects of research in Spainand they place the University ofCantabria’s R&D in an outstand-ing position for its productivityand quality.
R&D groups maintain closeand permanent links with compa-nies, public administrations andinstitutions to collaborate in thedevelopment of varied projectsand studies that require a highlevel of specialization and compe-tence.

A Develop-ment EngineIn its Autonomous Community,the University of Cantabria headsthe development of an economicmodel based on knowledge, incollaboration with the RegionalGovernment, the Parliament ofCantabria, the City Council ofSantander and Torrelavega, aswell as other public institutionsand private companies such asSantander Bank.
This vision of the universityas an innovation engine hasbeen impelled since the agree-ment signed in 2009 with insti-tutions and companies in orderto kick off a program of regionaldevelopment called CantabriaInternational Campus. This pro-gramme has received the back-ing of the Spanish NationalGovernment. Nuevas tecnologíaspara la educaciónLa UC apuesta por las nuevastecnologías como herramientapara la mejora de la calidad de laeducación y del servicio a susalumnos. Aulas y laboratoriosestán equipados con instrumen-tos avanzados al servicio del pro-greso en el conocimiento. Estasinfraestructuras se sustentansobre una red informática prepa-rada para acoger las tecnologíasmás recientes. Los alumnos dis-ponen de una tarjeta universita-ria inteligente y una cuenta decorreo electrónico y puedenconocer información de sus estu-dios a través del Campus Virtual,relacionarse con los profesores ycompañeros o publicar sus pro-pias páginas personales en la red.
Access to New TechnologiesThe UC has introduced newtechnologies as a key tool toimprove quality in education andservices to students. Lecturerooms and laboratories are fittedwith advanced equipment to fur-ther the progress of knowledge.These infrastructures are sup-ported by a computer networkdesigned to include the latesttechnologies. Students have asmart electronic card and an e-mail account at their disposal,and can therefore gain electronicaccess to details of their academicrecord through the Campus Vir-tual, correspond with their lec-turers or fellow students, or evenpublish their own personal pages.
Empleo y emprendimientoLa actividad docente de la Uni-versidad de Cantabria está enca-minada a facilitar la inserción desus alumnos en el mercado labo-ral y apoyar el emprendimiento.Consciente de la necesaria inter-acción con el sector productivoen esta tarea, mantiene más de1.100 convenios de colaboracióncon empresas e institucionesespañolas y de otros países,canalizada a través del Centro deOrientación e Información deEmpleo (COIE). Este serviciocoordina un programa de prác-ticas profesionales en el que cadaaño participan entre 2.000 y2.500 estudiantes. El COIE tam-bién canaliza anualmente unamedia de 400 ofertas de empleoa jóvenes licenciados.
La UC impulsa el emprendi-miento desde el Vicerrectoradode Estudiantes, Empleabilidad yEmprendimiento y a través deuna Comisión de Emprendi-miento transversal. De estamanera, el COIE ofrece a losestudiantes un servicio de aseso-ría para la creación de empresasy la Fundación Leonardo TorresQuevedo organiza varias inicia-tivas para impulsar el emprendi-miento en Cantabria. La UCtambién cuenta con un vivero deempresas, el CDTUC, y el Cen-tro Internacional SantanderEmprendimiento (CISE), dondese imparte formación enemprendimiento y se realizaninvestigaciones en la materia.
Employment andEntrepreneurshipTeachning activity at the UCaims to make it easier for stu-dents to enter the labour market,as well as contribute to entrepre-neurship. Aware of the need forinteraction with the businessworld in this challenging task, theUniversity has signed more than1,100 agreements with compa-nies and institutions from Spainand other European countries.This is channeled through theEmployment Orientation andInformation Centre (COIE). ThisCentre is responsible for coordi-nating placement programmes inboth private enterprises andpublic institutions which aim toprovide the student with profes-sional experience. Between 2,000and 2,500 students take part inthese programmes each year. TheCOIE also channels an average of350 employment offers to younggraduates annually.
The UC promotes entrepre-neurship through the Vice-Chan-cellorship for Students, Employa-bility and Entrepreneurship andthe transversal EntrepreneurshipCommission. The COIE offersthe students an advisory serviceto help set up a company, and theLeonardo Torres Quevedo Foun-dation organizes various initiati-ves to boost entrepreneurship inCantabria. The UC also has anenterprise incubator calledCDTUC and the SantanderEntrepreneurship InternationalCenter (CISE), an organizationthat teaches entrepreneurshipand carries out research in thatsubject.

Divulgación culturaly científicaLa difusión del conocimiento yla cultura constituyen una fun-ción fundamental de la Universi-dad de Cantabria. El campusacoge a lo largo del año unavariada gama de exposiciones,ciclos, cursos, conferencias yconciertos, tanto en su sedeprincipal en Las Llamas como enel centro de la ciudad. De estamanera, la UC se erige como unactor destacado de dinamizacióncultural y social en su entorno.
Las Aulas de Extensión Uni-versitaria organizan numerosasactividades relacionadas con elteatro, la música, la imagen y elsonido, el patrimonio cultural,tecnología, literatura, cine, estu-dios de igualdad de género, coo-peración internacional y divul-gación científica. Cabe destacaresta última, por la capacidad quetiene la UC de transferir a lasociedad el conocimiento quegeneran sus expertos en todaslas disciplinas. The extracurricular Universitydepartments organize numerousactivities relating to theatre,music, photography, cultural her-itage, theology, literature, cinema,women’s studies, internationalcooperation and scientific ques-tions of general interest. En este recinto, losalumnos encuentran apoyo paratodo lo relacionado con susestudios y su vida universitaria:gestión académica, becas, orien-tación, prácticas y empleo, soli-daridad y voluntariado, asocia-ciones, Consejo de Estudian-tes… A estas oficinas se sumanlos Espacios Sociales de Apren-dizaje, zonas pensadas paracompartir experiencias entreestudiantes y fomentar el debate,el trabajo en grupo y todo tipode actividades universitarias.
