An inquest has been held into the death of a Shildon man who sadly passed away while working in China.Michael Anthony Aldworth died on Chinese New Year’s Day (3rd February) after celebrating the occasion with his friends. The inquest took place in Crook, where coroner Andrew Tweddle said he found difficulties in trying to get information from

Chinese authorities.Mr Aldworth’s mother told the coroner how the 34 year-old, of Spruce Court, had gone to dinner at his boss’s parents’ house for a meal where he fell asleep at the table after drinking. His boss had tried to wake him, but Michael had told everyone to leave him alone. The group then laid him on a bed with a glass of water and a bucket and went outside to enjoy

Tree-mendous effort to tidy up Dene Valley

Bishop Auckland and Shildon Area Action Partnership is supporting a project to carry out improvements in the Dene Valley area. It’s hoped tree planting and resurfacing work to improve a car park, popular with walkers, will improve

the area for residents and visitors. Work is being carried at the entrance to the Close House area of Dene Valley with councillors Tommy Taylor and Dorothy Burn supporting the project with £10,000 from their neigh-

bourhood budgets with a further £25,000 coming from Durham County Council’s Urban Rural Re-naissance Fund. This work had been identified from a consulta-tion process that included over 1000 residents.

Poetry CornerSeven Levels of Heaven

I know you’re at my bedsideI feel you standing there

In tranquil land of memoriesNo lifetime can compare.

I know you’re at my bedsideSons and daughters too

Remembering the fun timesWhen daddy played the fool.

I know you’re at my bedsideI feel you kiss my brow

Holding hands so tightlyAlmost over now.

I know you’re at my gravesideI see you standing thereIn company of angelsI cry that you despair.

I know some think that heavenIs a land of make believe

But heaven is a place for soulsThat mortals cannot see.

A parallel world of plentyWhere love is currency,

No hate greed or hungerA light of liberty.

When led into the vortexFrom mortal to supreme

You won’t believe the love you feelAwash in loves bright beam.

Mammies there with kissesDaddy cries with glee

Cleanse your soul with wishes,Pray life’s scars will heal.

A seven level heavenMyers’ said there’d be,

To mortal form,No wishes,

Bottom of life’s tree.

A seven level heavenPray God they let me stay,

A seven level heavenTo six I hope and pray.

All players, supporters and members are invited to Shildon Railway Cricket Club’s Annual Senior Pres-entation Night to be held on Saturday 10th September at 7-30 p.m. in the Shildon Railway Sports and Social Club (The B.R.)”We haven’t had a lot of success on the field this year but that’s no reason not to celebrate the season’s end and enjoy a good night, whilst looking forward to better things next year,” said a club official. Four trophies will be awarded to the players who top the batting and bowling averages in the

1st and 2nd teams. Two further trophies will be awarded to the Players’ Player of the Year which will be voted for by the players. All members are eligible to vote in a new award to be presented to the Clubman of the Year, which aims to recognise the person who has helped most by working for the club throughout the year, during the close season, as well as during the season, both on or off the field. This award, the John Raw Trophy, used to be presented to the winners of a junior triangular

tournament but, with the permission of the family, will now be rededicated. The late John Raw was, for many years, secretary of the club and he dedicated years of service to cricket. His sons John and David have been invited to attend the occasion and to present the trophy. Voting papers are available at the clubhouse and players and members are requested to complete and return these to any committee member by 7p.m on 1st September. Donations of bottles for the raffle will be gratefully accepted.

Cricketers’ presentation night

The outdoor season is now drawing to a close and the Vet's team, who are top of the league, played their final game at Newton Hall, Durham, who are in second place in the league and have two games in hand. The town team lost 1-7, however the single point should be

Shildon Railway Cricket Club’s woes continue as the 1st XI crashed to another heavy defeat last weekend at home to Willington. Batting first, Shildon were dismissed for 119 with J.P.Nash 28, P.Garbutt 23 and M.Lumley 45 being the main contributors. There were four ducks in the innings in what was again a much depleted side, which included 13

year old Matthew Franklin who made his 1st XI debut alongside his father Neil. In reply Robert Nevison took 2 for 22 as Willington lost five wickets before achieving a comfortable victory. More worryingly the club again failed to turn out a 2nd XI and had to concede the fixture. This is the third time this season that this has occurred and the Readers

Durham County League will again impose a fine. It also begs the question “Can the club continue in this vein?” The simple answer is that the league rules state that clubs must run two senior sides in Divisions A and B and therefore our town’s only cricket club must attract new players if it is to continue playing at this level.

Cricketers’ poor show

Junior’s presentationA presentation event is to be held for members of the Shildon Junior Football League. The event will take place on Sunday 4th September from 12 noon until 3.30pm at Elm Road WMC.

As well as the presentation there will also be a disco, face painting and light re-freshments.“We look forward to seeing everyone on the day,” said Tracey Bellas, one of the organisers of the league.

Shildon Jubilee FC had a busy time last week with two league games as well as a fancy dress drop-off.On Thursday 18th August they played Ferryhill Manor House and were beaten but not disgraced by a 4 – 0 scoreline. Ferryhill were more direct with their passing and movement and were 1 – 0 up at half time. In the 2nd half Jubilee suffered two injuries and had to reshuffle the team, resulting in Ferryhill adding three more goals.Although beaten, Jubilee were not down, as they picked themselves up and went on a fancy dress drop on Saturday 20th August. The lads were stranded 15 miles from home with no money or phones and had

to make their own way back to The Tree Tuns in Shildon. Five hours later, with aching feet but full of smiles, they were back. The next day Sunday 21st August the team played Tudhoe in the league. Although still aching and slightly hung over, the lads controlled the game bril-liantly.A quick passing movement unlocked the Tudhoe defence for Danny Thomas to finish off from inside the box for 1 – 0. Another good passing movement and a through-ball to Anthony Gillan made it 2 – 0 at half time. With 18 minutes remaining Danny Thomas got his 2nd goal of the day with a free kick into the bottom corner, giving the keeper no chance.

Jubilee FC were down but not beaten

enough to make the town team division 3 winners. In the Men's league the town team is relegated after a 1-4 away defeat against Rail Athletic B. This means both Shildon teams, Town and Rail A, are relegated. The Ladies team is still third in the league after a 3-1 win

at home against North Park, however they were beaten by Hundens in the team K O semi final. In the SW Durham mixed league both teams were beaten. The A team travelled to Kelloe where they were defeated 3-7, while the B team lost 4-6 to Cockton Hill.

Bowls teams relegated

Shildon AFC are away in the league on Friday 26th August to Tow Law Town. The following Bank Holiday Monday 29th August they

travel to league favourites Spennymoor Town. Kick off for this match is at 3pm, not 11am as previously arranged.
