Students from King James I Community Academy are celebrating, after winning a six-month business challenge in which they demonstrated their business skills. Students from 20 secondary schools across County Durham have taken part in the Future Business Magnates competition, organised by Durham County Council. The competition, now in its sixth year, is an opportunity for schools to encourage students to develop enterprise skills and experience the excitement and exhilara- tion of working in business. Schools were paired with local companies, which acted as mentors for the students who were tasked with developing a business idea and completing a series of six business- related challenges. The competition winners were announced at an awards ceremony, which took place earlier this month at the Xcel Centre in Newton Aycliffe. The winning team was King James I Academy, which received £2,000 for the school and £50 for each team member as well as the winners’ trophy. Runner-up was the team from Framwellgate School, in Durham, which received £1,000 for the school and £25 for each team member. Eight additional awards were made, with a trophy for each winning team and £10 prizes for each team member, with Bishop Barrington winning the prize for the Most Effective Team. Cllr Linda Marshall, vice- chairman at Durham County Council, said, “We hope that what they have learnt in this year’s com- petition will inspire them to become our future business people.” Shoppers will take a step back in time this weekend as Bishop Auckland Town Centre returns to the fabulous Forties. The town will be trans- formed on Saturday 23rd July as it celebrates the sights and sounds of 70 years ago. Now in its eighth year, the town’s annual 1940’s Day is organised by Durham County Council and features music and dance performances, a fashion show and a military vehicle display. The Newgate Centre will be the venue for three ap- pearances by the Fenner Sisters, who will perform their tribute to the Andrews Sisters accompanied by the Tees Valley Jazzmen. The Lindy Jazz Dancers, meanwhile, will encourage shoppers to get into the spirit of the festivities by joining them in classic dances from the era. This year, for the first time there will also be musical Town turns back the clock performances in Fore Bondgate, where traders will be decorating their shops in the keeping with the Forties theme. Other activities will include a fashion show in the Newgate Centre and a display of military vehicles and uniforms in Newgate Street. Steve McCormick, Bishop Auckland town centre manager, said, “We’re very much looking forward to our 1940’s day, which is part of our ever-growing programmes of activities. “I’d like to encourage people to come along and experience the special atmosphere the event creates – and enjoy some shopping too.” Fenner Sisters, Tees Valley Jazzmen and Lindy Jazz Dancers 11am, 12.15pm and 2pm. • Forties fashion show – 1pm. Works are progressing well on the latest stage of the regeneration of Bishop Auckland town centre, and remain on schedule for an autumn completion. The fifth phase of the revamp began in March this year and is being funded by Durham County Council. The seven month programme of works sees the Market Place and sur-rounding area benefit from major environmental improvements including road safety measures and enhanced seating and setting features. It follows a phased regen-eration plan for the historic town which has delivered hugely improved open spaces and transformed the approach to the town centre from the Bondgate end. The scheme has been combined with a range of retail and business incentives to encourage more to choose it as a location to trade or opperate.Cabinet member for regen-

Town regeneration hits half-way point

eration and economic de-velopment, Cllr Neil Foster, said, “The regeneration of Bishop Auckland will re-invigorate the Market Place and wider area, providing residents and visitors with a unique gateway to the town’s retail and business outlets and rich historic and cultural heritage.“The best things in life are worth waiting for and it is right at this landmark stage in the works to say a huge thank you to all the traders and residents who continue to support us with their patience.“For some the benefits of the revamped Market Place area are already being reaped, for others I feel sure the increased footfall and financial benefits that it will bring will follow in the near future.”The latest phase, funded by the council following the announcement by ONE that it was no longer able to provide the capital, is scheduled for completion in the late autumn.

Town centre development manager Chris Myers said, “The completion will see a greatly improved shared space in the centre of the town fit for street markets and festivals which will further benefit the town’s economy. Events like the Bishop Auckland Food Festival, organised for the first time this year by the county council, have already made use of the new space, ensuring visitors are drawn to the heart of the retail offer.“The design has also used creative streetscene to ensure that railings, spherical bollards and trees provide an appropriate barrier between the public and traffic, without re-stricting access. There was a great deal of support for the design during the con-sultation events last autumn and a number of the cafés are already benefitting from enhanced outdoor seating areas. I hope it won’t be long before more businesses feel the benefit.”

Police in Bishop Auckland are urging off-licences to play their part in tackling anti-social behaviour over the summer months by refusing to sell alcohol to young people. In a bid to curb under-aged drinking a test purchase operation was carried out on Saturday 9th July.A girl and boy, both aged 16, attempted to buy booze from shops in the town. Twelve of the 13 premises targeted asked for identi-fication and refused them alcohol. Those who passed the test were: Park Head Services, New Coundon; Cost Cutters,

in a responsible manner by refusing to sell alcohol to these young people. By insisting on identifica-tion before selling drink to those entitled to buy it they are playing their part in helping to reduce incidents of alcohol-fuelled anti-social behaviour and disorder,” said PCSO Jamie Pitt.He added, “Our focus with regard to this issue is education and we are visiting premises to ensure they are complying with law as well as quizzing staff to ensure they know what is required of them under the terms of their licence.”

Help for Heroes challengeA local man from St. Helen Auckland, who is currently serving in the armed forces at Catterick Garrison, is planning to run the entire 87 miles of Hadrian's Wall to raise money for Help for Heroes. SAC Neal Jones (RAF) along

with a couple of others will perform the task throughout the night of 15th August, and it should take around 25 hours to complete. Neal said he works closely with medical personnel who see first hand the

sacrifices the forces make for our country. He is desperate to raise as much money as he can for the cause. If anyone would like to make a donation, Neal has a fundraising page online at www.bmycharity.com/dhun.

The second phase of a popular scheme to help people think smarter about their finances is about to begin.Bishop Auckland and Shildon Area Action Part-nership (AAP) is supporting the Durham County Credit Union in the Woodhouse Close area, which offers financial services as an alternative to doorstep lending or loan sharks. The project is being delivered by a dedicated team of volunteers who are supported by a devel-opment worker and will benefit all members of the local community including young people who will

learn tips about being more ‘money smart.’In a bid to develop a savings habit in schools at an early age, a junior savings scheme has been set up at Woodhouse Close Primary School with the aim of hitting home the message at an early age. Councillors John Lethbridge and June Lee are supporting the project with £2,500 from their neighbourhood budgets. Angelina Maddison, AAP co-ordinator, said, “In these difficult financial times the scheme is fantastic as it encourages young people on the safe route to financial management.”

I’ve always had negative comments and horrible

America bound: Students from King James I Academy Kate Dixon, Katie Newton, Char-ley Armstrong, Amy Park and Rebecca Bennett.Enterprising students from King James I Academy have headed to the land of op-portunity this summer. The youngsters will spend three weeks in the USA after using their entrepre-neurial skills to raise the money for the trip. The opportunity is one which the enterprise department at King James, led by Ross Brown, offers to students every year. The expedition will take in Iowa, where the students will join a traditional American summer camp; Chicago, for the bright lights of a big US city; and Florida, where they plan to have a holiday.Katie Newton, 17, is making her third trip and is hoping to meet the contacts that could eventually see her working full time in America.“I’m going this time for

the experience before university. I want to work with children so when we’re at the summer camp I’m planning to talk to the staff about working there,” she said.“It’s an enterprise trip so before we go it’s all about the fundraising, organising events, working as a team and planning. I’ve put everything into it.”Six students – Katie, Charley Armstrong, Beth Dixon, Jack Hope, Katie Rewcastle and Rebecca Lowes – and two members of staff from King James I Academy left for the US on July 18th.Meanwhile, another group of students have already begun planning their fund-raising for next year’s trip. Amy Park, 16, said, “I’m really looking forward to it already. I’ve always wanted to go to America and this way I’ll get to see the real

country and not just one city.”Amy, along with Rebecca Bennett, Kate Dixon and others are planning a sponsored cycle in which they will pedal the equivalent of 1,393 miles, the distance from Florida to Iowa. Each student has to raise at least £200 but usually ends up raising more which goes to support others in the group.Nick Grieveson, head-teacher of King James I Academy, said, “Our annual enterprise trip to America is a fantastic opportunity for our students. “However, it’s not a holiday and requires some hard work from them before they go. They must use all their initiative to come up with ways to raise the money and their organisational skills in planning events.”

Other events included a raffle, dress down and a bake day.Chief Executive Peter Chaffer said: “This cause really inspired people to do

something extra special. We have had fundraising days in the past but nothing on

Plans to be considered for development on Focus siteDurham County Council is to consider a company’s plans to redevelop the former Focus site in St Helen Auckland.Metric Property Invest-ments has conditionally purchased the 4 acre piece of land for £2.3 million, dependent on the planning permission being granted. It has then proposed to invest a further £8.7 million to develop a retail park on the site, consisting of six stores which could generate around 90 jobs.Andrew Jones, Chief Executive of Metric commented, “We are in

discussions with our target retailers and are excited by the high level of occupier appeal already demon-strated.“We believe that it will form an attractive and profitable addition to our redevelopment portfolio.”The plans have caused concern for some town centre occupants however, who fear the new stores could take away their business and reduce footfall in the town.Speaking of the develop-ment in relation to the newly-built Sainsbury’s and Tesco stores, Newgate

Centre Manager David Wilson stated, “This new development is totally different as it will be directly targeting shops in the town to compete with.“If it goes ahead it would absolutely guarantee damage to the people from the town and we are extremely worried about it.”Councillor Sam Zair, who himself runs a cafe in Bondgate said, “Yes it will be creating jobs, but at what cost to the town centre?”The application will be considered on 25th August.

St Mary’s Under 16s Kings returned from the Barcelona Junior cup last weekend with a trophy, after playing five games against Brazilian sides throughout the tournament. The boys won their semi-final on penalties and then went on to win the final 2-0. Goalkeeper James Cleminson deserves a special mention, after-scoring the last penalty in the semi-final and saving a penalty in the final.Eighteen players along with four coaches and eight parents spent

a week in Barcelona getting shown round the Nou-Camp, visiting the Port Aventura theme park. They also spoke at the opening ceremony, even though they were the only English team there. Back home, the Under 15s had a trip down to Barnsley last weekend to compete in their annual tournament. They had a good run of games, winning all of their group games and quarter final, getting through to the semi-final, where they lost on penalties due to some great saves by the

opposing keeper.A spokesperson for St Mary’s commented on their recent fundrais-ing event. He said, “A big thank you to all who enjoyed and supported our Sportsmans Night with Eric Gates, Craig Hignett and John Beresford supporting next years team to raise funds for Barcelona.”The Under 13 Aces are looking for a goalkeeper for next season. Bishop Cricket by John Phelan

There was no cricket last weekend but on Saturday July 9th the Bishop Auckland 1st team were at Northallerton. Richard Hawthorne returned to the team and took a couple of late wickets as Bishop did well to put the home side out for 147. At one stage Northallerton were 83-6 but Joe Clarkson at number 5 hammered seven 4s and three 6s in a crucial innings of 64, which included an 8th wicket partnership of 40 runs with his father Kevin who was unbeaten on

20. Dan Conway returned 3-65, Phil Holdsworth 2-8, Richard Hawthorne 2-29, Matthew Cowling 2-1 and James Robinson 1-24.A target of 147 should have been within the reach of Bishop but it wasn't to be the case as they lost their first wicket with the score on three. The fifth wicket fell with the score on 70 and after that it was all downhill as Bishop closed on 86 all out with only Matthew Cowling 17, Phil Holdsworth 19 and Ben Thompson 11 reaching double figures.

Ciara Hughes, a Year 6 pupil from St Anne’s C of E Primary School in Bishop Auckland, recently won the 80 metres County Final. The event was held at Shildon Running Track and schools from all over the County were represented.Ciara comfortably won her heat and then went onto

win the final after a nail biting close finish. Ciara also ran the first leg of the 400 metre relay and the team came second in the final. The talented runner practices at the Shildon track three times a week and has also taken part in the Great North Run 3 times.
