Talking about cancer in Shildon The NHS County Durham and Darlington Community Health Services’ Talking About Cancer (TAC) team is working within our local community to help raise awareness of cancer. The Talking About Cancer team can: • help raise awareness of the signs and symptoms of bowel, breast and lung cancers; promote the NHS screening programmes for bowel, breast and cervical cancer and provide awareness sessions to community groups and organisations to talk about cancer, the signs and symptoms and the screening programmes available. Information stands will be at Shildon Sure Start on Byerley Road on Tuesday 18th January, from 9.30am to 11am. A member of the Talking About Cancer team will be there for you to talk to, along with leaflets and information for you to take away. Since prevention is one of the most important cancer-fighting tools, it is important that cancer be detected as early as possible before it spreads. Research shows early detection of breast, bowel and lung cancer and increased awareness of the NHS screening programmes and how to access them will increase survivability rates and ultimately save lives. The awareness session aims to provide good quality, easy to understand information about the signs and symptoms of cancer along with the screening programmes available. The intention of the session is to encourage members of the public who may be concerned to visit their GP sooner. If your group or organisa- tion would be interested in having an awareness session, contact Karen Moore on 0191 5692823. This week saw the completion of a project which was started by the Shildon Youth Council for a Youth Shelter and toddler swings in Hackworth Park. The Shildon Youth Council secured funding for the project after consulting with young people in the town to provide a facility where youngsters wanting somewhere to go can meet and socialise. It is hoped that the shelter will reduce youths hanging about in the town centre and street corners and reduce the risk of minor damage that can take place when they meet in unsuitable places. Funding was secured from the Youth Opportunities Fund and AAP Neighbour- hood Budget money, provided by Councillors Garry Huntington and David Hancock. Dan Howden, Youth Councillor, said, “We are very pleased that funding was granted and the shelter will give young people a place in which to hang out on a night with solar lighting and Bluetooth music. We are grateful to Cllrs Huntington and Hancock as well as the Youth Opportunities Fund for granting the money”. The Toddler Swings will enhance play facilities for toddlers and children within the natural play area and hopefully will appeal to families to use this area along with the other outdoor equipment. Shildon Town Councillors supported this project and agreed to fund future maintenance and insurance of the facility. Youth shelter and swings now ready The Youth Shelter in Hackworth Park provides somewhere for youngsters to meet up and socialise.

The Learning Team at Locomotion: The National Railway Museum at Shildon is inviting readers for a free tour or talk at the museum every month. Join the Learning Team on Wednesday January 19th for your chance to learn more about how a steam locomotive works, using the sectioned replica Rocket as an example. The sectioned locomotive was built in 1934 by Robert Stephenson and Hawthorns. The original Rocket, which beat Shildon-built Sans Pareil in the famous Rainhill Trials race,

featured crucial innova-tions such as a multi-tube boiler, blast pipe and direct drive from cylinder to wheel. These design ideas laid the foundations of steam locomotive practice for the next 150 years, and the sectioned replica allows observers to see what made it so special. There are sessions at 11am and 2pm on Wednesday January 19th, and it’s free to join in. However, places are limited so you’ll need to pre-book – for more infor-mation, call the museum on 01388 771439.

A Shildon man has been cleared of rape after a jury took just 30 minutes to come to a unanimous not-guilty verdict.Keith Robertson, of Thomas Street, had been drinking with his accuser in her home when they began to kiss. Robertson, who is known as Jake, admitted giving the woman love bites and said they touched one another, before she suddenly said, “You’ve just totally raped me.”He came face to face with the woman who accused him of rape during the

Durham County Council has proposed several changes to subsidised bus services affecting the Shildon area.It is proposed that the 1B service between Tow Law and Darlington - via Bishop Auckland and Shildon - have its subsidies withdrawn from

8pm Monday to Saturday, meaning the service will no longer operate after this time. The 1B will also be withdrawn on a Sunday, as will the 5A, which runs between Bishop Auckland and Darlington, via Newton Aycliffe and Shildon. The number 7 bus between

Shildon and Spennymoor will have its subsidies withdrawn for its Saturday service, whereas the 896 will have its entire subsidy cancelled. The final decision will be made in mid-February and the changes will be imple-mented on Sunday 17th April.

trial, and she was warned by the judge for screaming abuse at the Shildon man.Judge John Walford presiding over proceedings at Teesside Crown Court warned the woman about her conduct just seconds after she entered the witness box.The woman, who is in her 40s, yelled at the accused, “you liar, you’re a liar” during her cross examina-tion.She appeared to take exception to some questions lodged by defence lawyer Brian Russell, who suggested she

consented to parts of the sexual activity. The woman admitted kissing with Mr Robertson, 51, but denied any heavy petting.Under cross examination from Mr Russell, the woman denied concocting “an utterly ridiculous account” and being extremely drunk and unable to remember the events of the evening. She accepted drinking more than four litres of what she described as “lethal” Jacks cider, but denied leaving to purchase another three litre bottle to share that evening.

Margots Hairdress-ers in Church Street, Shildon raised £1,600 for worthwhile causes during 2010. The many charities to benefit included Cancer UK, the Great North Air Ambulance, the Butterwick Hospice, the Salvation Army and the local premature baby unit, as well as The Town Crier. The charity fundraising kicked off in 1982 with a quest to raise £40,000 for a hydro therapy pool for the mentally handicapped at Newton Aycliffe. The pool was official opened five years later in 1987.Thereafter, the staff could not stop fundraising with barbecues, disco's quizzes and sponsorships for fancy

dress. In one special year, 1997 they raised an amazing sum of £23,000 from the Daddy's Grotto theme, which was set up in the memory of Malcolm Brewster from the Butterwick Hospice in Stockton-on-Tees.Thelma Cook, who recently retired from the

hairdressers, said the shop staff has been collecting for charities for the last 28 years and has raised over £55,000. She would like to express a big thank you to everyone who has supported them over the many years. The bran tub in the salon will commence in February.

Fundraising continues after almost three decades

What a start!Heighington AFC Boys Under 8s played their first ever friendly games on Sunday against Kader Juniors. It was a very cold morning but all the team were very excited, as were a lot of the parents. In the first game both teams worked hard in the middle of the pitch with Heighington Boys having the better of the chances. The Heighington team took the lead early in the second half thanks to Spencer Soakell, who slotted home after a mazy run through the opposition.Heighington were then gifted a second when Jacob Richardson fired the ball into the back of the net. The game finished 2-0 to Heighington Boys with

man-of-the-match being awarded to Cameron Brassell. In the second game of the morning the team reacted amazingly to a team talk from managers David Brassell and Paul Soakell.Heighington AFC Boys Under 8s finished the game 11-0 Winners, 2 goals from Cameron Brassell, 3 goals from Jacob Richardson, 4 goals from Spencer Soakell, 1 goal from Keiran Shingler and 1 goal from McKenna Longstaff capped off an amazing team perfor-mance. Man-of-the-match was awarded to Spencer Soakell. “A Big Well Done to the whole team who gave 100% on a very cold winter’s morning,” said a team spokesperson.

Shildon beaten by Spennymoor in the LeagueShildon AFC finally played their top of the league game away against league favourites Spennymoor Town on Tuesday 11th January and were disap-pointed to lose 2 - 1.In an end-to-end entertain-ing game, Moors had most of the attacking play in the early stages without creating any real chances, then on 15 minutes, Moors Gavin Cogdon’s shot was well stopped by Shildon keeper Keith Finch. Half time approached with both teams cancelling each other out, with both defences solid, not allowing any open opportunities. After 64 minutes Moors took the lead when Craig Ruddy won the ball inside the box and set up Adam Johnston who

lobbed the ball over the keeper. The home side went 2 - 0 up on 75 minutes when Adam Johnston scored his second goal of the night from the edge of the box with a low drive into the bottom corner. Three minutes later Shildon should have scored, but Chris Hughes missed an easy chance from only 6 yards out. The Railwaymen pulled a goal back after 88 minutes when Gary Brown fired a brilliant 25 yarder into the top of the net giving keeper Simon Bishop no chance. Near the end, Shildon nearly grabbed a point, when from a corner the ball was headed goal-bound, but it was cleared off the line by a Moors defender.
