The 2013 festival, which takes place on April 20th-21st, boasts a stunning array of some of the best regional food and drink producers, with an impressive 45 home-grown Durham businesses from across the county taking part. The producers have been hand-picked to ensure a great choice of the finest fresh produce and culinary delights. The festival received almost double the amount of applications for stalls than are available – a positive sign for the future of the food festival and for the visitors who flock to the event each year looking for something new and distinc- tive to tempt their taste buds. The 2013 festival has significantly increased in size, featuring four free markets. A dedicated Durham producers’ market will take place in the grounds of Auckland Castle, showcasing the best of our native produce, from beer to beef and fish to fudge, with a number of exciting new faces taking part. The fledgling micro- brewery, Sonnet 43 Brew House and IK Fish, the award-winning fishmonger from Durham City’s Indoor Market, are both attending this year’s festival for the first time. Rather than the standard appearance of a continental market, Bishop Auckland Food Festival has invited a visiting market from Cumbria to take part and celebrate the best in Northern regional cuisine. help track him or her down. The car in question is a Suzuki Swift 2005 - 2010, model G.L or S23 1.3, which is likely to have extensive damage to the passenger side.Anyone with information is urged to contact police on 101.

Villagers oppose turbinesResidents in Redworth are opposing the erection of a wind turbine just outside the village. Those opposing the plans believe that the proposal

contravenes a key principle to ‘protect the countryside for the sake of its’ intrinsic character and beauty, the diversity of its landscapes, heritage and wildlife.’

Daniel Joseph Coatsworth of Addison Road, Leeholme, was arrested and charged with two counts of theft of alcohol recently. The first offence occurred at the Co-op in Redworth

Road, Shildon, on 21st March, the second at Morrison’s in Bishop Auckland on 2nd April. The 20 year-old will appear before Newton Aycliffe Magistrates on Wednesday 24th April.

Do you have difficulty shopping for food?

Whether you have difficulty with transport to the shops, find it difficult to carry bulky or heavy shopping bags home, have a limited choice of food to buy or are incurring high food costs, then why not try Age UK’s shopping club? Using the Shildon Community Bus, the group will pick you up near to your home and take you to one of the major

supermarkets in Bishop Auckland. Once there, you can take your time choosing your food shopping, club together with others to take advantage of offers such as ‘buy one get one free’, and enjoy a cuppa and a chat in the super-market café. When you have finished shopping, the organisers will take you back to your pick-up point.

“If you are over 50 and living on the Jubilee Fields Estate why not let the Age UK County Durham Come Dine With Us project make your food shopping easier?” asked a spokesperson. There will be a small charge for the service towards the use of the minibus. For more information call Sara on 0191 374 0930 or email [email protected].

Analysis of the latest year end crime figures in Shildon show very positive results, say local police. Between April 2012 and March 2013, reported crime in Shildon was at 783, as opposed to 954 reported crimes the previous year; an 18% decrease. The most common crime categories - namely assaults, criminal damage, vehicle crime and shop-lifting - have all shown a noticeable reduction in the town compared to 2011/12 figures. However, burglaries other than in a dwelling house,

have slightly increased over the past year. New tactics and initia-tives to tackle this area of policing are currently on-going. The detection rate fell by 2% to 39% but is still above the 35% target.Analysis also shows that overall reports of anti-social behaviour in Shildon is also down by 26%. PC Littlefair commented, “I am delighted to see such a noticeable fall in crime and anti-social behaviour over the past year in Shildon. With the commitment and hard work Shildon Police have

put in over the past year it is rewarding to see these excellent results.“Shildon Police are grateful for all of its Neighbourhood Watch and PACT members, who have also made a great impact over the past year to assist us in reducing crime and anti-social behaviour. “Shildon Police team realise that we can never be complacent and must continue to work hard with our partner agencies to ensure that we do our utmost to continue driving down crime and anti-social behaviour in the town.”

Shildon Railway Cricket Club will be taking part in an innovative competi-tion to be played on Friday evenings this summer. The newly formed Durham Cricket League has introduced an F15 Cup Competition, to be played annually via four groups, with the winners from each group going on to a semi-finals and final day, scheduled for 1st September. The games will be played with a pink ball and teams are required to wear coloured clothing.“To be honest, we could have done without the extra expense of coloured outfits,” said club chairman

Cricketers going Loco

John Brennan, “but we must move with the times and do all we can to encourage more interest in our sport,” he added. The F15 team will be known as The Shildon Locos, and no doubt the players will look very fetching in their orange and black kit, which will cost the club around £450. “We are looking for a sponsor for our F15 Team, to help us cover these additional costs and I’d be pleased to hear from anyone interested,” said the chairman, who can be contacted on 01388 773663.The club is also busy at the ground with its “Spring

Clean” and hopes for a good turn-out on the next two Saturday mornings to ensure that the work is completed. On hearing via The Crier of the club’s efforts, ex-player Ken Stainethorpe generously donated some paint, nails and £50 to the cause. The club will be holding a Players’ Registration Night on Thursday 18th April from 6pm. All junior and senior players must be registered with the new league before the start of the season.Outdoor net practices have now commenced, at 6pm on Thursdays for seniors and Fridays for juniors.

Newton Aycliffe Spartans, County Durham’ only baseball team’ are delighted to announce they are moving to Shildon Leisure Centre. John Johnston, the Spartans’ head coach said, “This was a big step to leave Newton Aycliffe but once we saw the facilities at the leisure centre and the potential for developing the club, we knew we had to make the move. “I would also like to thank the management at Shildon Leisure Centre for all their support in making this move possible. “In addition to the adult team training and playing at the centre, we are

looking to develop the junior softball teams. Training for the juniors will take place on Tuesdays from 6pm and Saturdays from 10am, at a cost of just £2 per session, which will include all equipment needed. “Adult training sessions will take place on a Thursday, starting at 6pm. “The first home game of the season will be taking place on Sunday 21st April against The North Stars at 12 noon, so please come and support us”. For further information contact John Johnston at www.newtonaycliffespar-tans.co.uk or the Sunnydale Leisure Centre on 03000 266448 .
