SPECIAL SNORIDERS SNOSCENE REPORT
Happy, happy, happy. That pretty much sums itup for me as I scribble this president’s messageto you in early September. I think September ismy favourite month. The weather is always great(at least where I am), kids are back in school,NHL hockey training camps are soon underway, the NASCAR chase is about to begin, the NFLseason has just started and the anticipation of the2013/2014 sled season is to the boiling point. We have been inundated with the latest snow-mobile video teasers from the likes of Fourcast 3,Thunderstruck 12, Slednecks 16, Boondockers10 and Alpine Assassins since late July in antici-pation of the new season. All that being said, there are two video series that I am looking for-ward to the most. Last spring, SnowTrails TVfrom the U.S. was up here in B.C. and profiledPemberton and Fernie. In co-operation with theLet’s Ride BC program and a ton of effort frommany volunteers within the BCSF, we really lookforward to the exposure this U.S.-based showwill offer snowmobiling in B.C. Stay tuned toLetsRideBC.com in October and November aswe post these videos and please share with allyour snowmobile buddies across North America. Finally, a video teaser that most of you wouldhave seen last spring—the CAC, in co-operationwith a federal funding program called SARNIF,are about to launch Throttle Decisions, an eight-to nine-part video series focusing on avalanchesafety awareness. This will be a must-see for allsledders who recreate in mountainous terrain. The big four (Ski-Doo, Polaris, Yamaha andArctic Cat) are fuelling the much-anticipated sea-son as well. Hay Days in Minnesota seems to bethe launch point of the new sled models. Judgingby all the Facebook posts and pictures, the 2014models are creating some keen interest. But let us not forget the 2013 fall show seasonto kick everything off.• Edmonton - October 18 to 20• Puyallup - October 19 to 20• Toronto - October 25 to 27• Saskatoon - November 1 to 3• Vernon/Lumby/Mabel Lake - November 16The BCSF and Let’s Ride BC will be at Ed-
monton, Saskatoon and Vernon. Make sure youstop by and enter your name into the contests forsome really cool prizes. On a personal note, I am entering year three ofa five-year term as the volunteer president of theB.C. Snowmobile Federation. Alongside theBCSF office manager, Donegal Wilson, and theBCSF board of directors, I want to welcome youall to the 2013/2014 season. This past summerseason has been a busy one with plenty of initia-tives on the burner. I would specifically like torecognize three new directors to the BCSF boardof directors: Neil Girard representing Region 1 -Northeast, Jen Luszcz representing Region 6 -North Okanagan, and Doug Dean representingRegion 9 - Kootenays. A hearty welcome tothese three people and thanks for stepping up andvolunteering your time towards organized snow-mobiling in the province. I take extreme pleasure in announcing a B.C.-wide video contest to all snowmobile clubs re-gardless of affiliation. Through the Let’s RideBC program, we wish to profile snowmobiling inall areas of B.C. To accomplish this, we are chal-lenging all snowmobile clubs to come up with athree- to five-minute video profiling their respec-tive riding areas and surroundings. This contestcloses at the end of March 2014, so you have aton of time to get organized.Content that your video will be judged on willbe as follows:• Profile of your club• Profile of your riding area• Profile of your town• Profile of your local dealers, hoteliers, spon-sors and volunteers that make your club go.We have asked the DSMs from Ski-Doo, Po-laris, Arctic Cat and Yamaha to be the judges forthe videos that are submitted. All videos will beposted on the Let’s Ride BC website. Some awesome prizes will be awarded to thethree winning clubs with the best entry (in ouropinion). Now, we are not looking for a profes-sionally produced video. Instead, we are lookingfor what you might call a home movie using your

tPRESIDENT’S MESSAGEContinued from page 49
1. How long have you been snowmobiling? Ever since I can remember my father pulling usaround in a cutter at our property in Pembroke,Ontario. We had an old Alouette XL14 that heused and it always got stuck, but it was a lot offun. We graduated into a 1981 Ski-Doo Citationand we rode for hours on weekends, saving everypenny we could to buy enough jerry cans of gasto get us through a Saturday or Sunday. When wedidn’t have enough money, Dad was always gra-cious enough to let us siphon the gas out of hisdump truck. I couldn’t wait to turn 16—it meantwith my learner’s licence I could travel along theditch and cross highways, allowing me and mybuddies to ride into town from the country. 2. What do you ride? Currently I ride a Polaris 600 RMK, but whenthe kids are with me I have the honour of riding a96 340 Indy, while they ride the crap out of mine. 3. Where is your home club? Paradise Valley Snowmobile Association outof Dawson Creek.4. How long have you been involved with yourclub? This will be my 10th year as club president, butI have been with the club for 13 years. 5. Why did you join the board of the BCSF?I would love to blame a young lady at the officeof the BCSF for twisting my arm, but in all seri-ousness there is no question in my mind that Ithought my passion for snowmobiling and com-munity could be used to promote snowmobilingin B.C. I moved to B.C. after watching a televi-sion commercial promoting B.C. while a teenag-er in Ontario. I told my parents I was coming
here to live and I did. I have been here for overhalf my life, and I love the people and thescenery. My two biggest passions are snowmo-biling and people. If I leave any mark on PlanetEarth, I hope it involves promoting snowmobil-ing and great memories of people enjoying snow-mobiling.6. Where is your favourite place to ride? I must say I now have a great memory of ridingin the Graystokes area of Kelowna, but my fond-est memories are in Hassler, B.C., where a mannamed Ernie Wilfur taught me to ride the moun-tains. 7. If money and time were not an object wherewould you like to ride? Pemberton, B.C., with all my sons. There is nopoint enjoying it if my kids were not with me.8. What new snowmobile-related item have yousecretly been coveting? Yamaha Nytro with a turbo—it’s no secret! Mywife has been giving me the “don’t you darestare” for some time. 9. If you could ride like anybody, who would itbe? Ernie Wilfur—the guy is in his 60s and rodelike he was 15. He has since retired from thesport, but he was one heck of a prankster andgood for a million laughs. 10. What do you do for fun in the off-season?Currently I have two children still in school, and all four still at home. Fun for me is influenc-ing them to be community-minded, people-orien-tated, hard-working and to love their mother. Wecamp and we love to fish, usually still together asa family as much as time provides.

CLUB EVENTS>>With so many important snowmobile peoplemeeting in one place it was a little overwhelming
at times. To be sitting in the grass eating dinnerwith Ed Klim or have a Hallof Famer buy you a drink wasan experience that I will neverforget. There were over 450delegates registered for themeetings and each day startedat 7 a.m. and finished in thewee hours of the morning. Many people had questionsabout what snowmobiling inB.C. was all about. Some feltthat we must be like the WildWest. I had comments like, what do you meanyou cannot ride to a gas station? How do you getfuel? Many administrators wanted to know how
we managed to have trails at all without manda-tory trail passes and provincial or federal fund-ing. We are one of the few places that do not
have a province/state-wide trailpass and each club operates in-dependently with mostly vol-unteers. I know that after talking withme and with a little assurancethat we do not all ride like theathletes in the videos, BritishColumbia was added to theirbucket list of places they hadto ride. So if you see some-
one on a snowmobile holiday in B.C.please stop them and share some of our WildWest hospitality to make their stay extra special.I am looking forward to next year in Coloradoand I will wear my Thirsty Dog tag proudly.

We all know that smart mountain riders alwayscheck and understand the avalanche forecastwhen making plans with their group for their rid-ing day so that they can ride to the conditions, not the opportunity. As many of you are aware, the Canadian Avalanche Centre (CAC) providesdaily avalanche forecasts (some of you knowthese as avalanche bulletins) during much of theriding season for many areas of BritishColumbia and Alberta. These forecasts can be accessed on-line at www.avalanche.ca, by calling1-800-667-1105, or through mobiledevices. In seasons past, many ofyou utilized the free mobile IPhoneapp, Avalanche!, which was the mo-bile version of the avalanche fore-cast. We have improved upon theAvalanche! IPhone app and we arereplacing it with the CAC Mobileapp. This new app works on An-droid or Apple tablets and smart-phones, and it’s free! Now check-ing avalanche conditions in theCAC’s and partners’ avalancheforecast regions before you headout for a day of riding has becomeeven easier. This upgraded app gives users all the informa-tion they have become familiar with—the iconsdescribing the avalanche danger, current ava-lanche problems, a summary of avalanche re-ports, a snowpack summary and a weathersummary. We know from speaking with our users that theold avalanche forecast map was somewhat con-
fusing when trying to determine which forecastarea covered which riding areas so we have cre-ated an interactive map as part of the app. The in-teractive map allows users to zoom in and scroll, and shows your location in relation to the ava-lanche forecast areas. The major highways andcommunities are also on the map for easier refer-ence.
The interactive map will form the basisfor our observer network, slatedfor release in early 2014. Themap will have layers that allowusers to view recent photos, ob-servations, avalanche incidents, etc. in their area of interest. Thisfurther helps people to look atwhat is happening out there whenplanning for a day of riding. Themap used by DriveBC is a goodanalogy for what we’re aiming for.How many times have you read
the avalanche forecast for your rid-ing day, discussed it with yourgroup, and then cannot remember allof the details when you are out in thefield? The app also has an online mode, so
you can download the forecast beforeleaving cell range. This makes it possible for youto review the details of the avalanche forecastwhile you are out enjoying your riding day. Ifyou do turn on your smartphone, remember to doso in an area that is safely away from avalancheterrain and always turn your smartphone offagain before travelling into avalanche terrain.

Electronics have been knownto interfere with avalanchetransceivers. Remember, checking the av-alanche forecast is a skilledactivity, and it is much morethan looking solely at the ava-lanche danger rating. So takemore avalanche training sothat you can have a better un-derstanding of the avalancheforecast and how it relates toyour terrain choices for theday. The price is right so checkout the new free app. Weknow you will love it! Consid-er it another tool for your ava-lanche safety tool kit. GET THE TRAINING: Take anavalanche course. For 35 years B.C. snowmobilers have beenmaking a difference in the lives of children withdisabilities and supporting Easter Seals familiesacross B.C. by hosting Snowarama and Winter-fest events in their communities. Since 1983BCSF clubs have raised over $4 million for East-er Seals services in B.C. These funds have helpedthousands of children with disabilities enjoy aweek at one of three Easter Seals camps inSquamish, Winfield and Shawnigan Lake. The CCSO would like to thank oursponsors for the 2013/2014 season..
It’s almost time! The cold nights across Cana-da are making us anticipateour favourite season—winter. The sleds are getting polished, racers are in training, newproduct launches are happen-ing from snowmobile manu-facturers and longer tracksseem to be a common theme. We are all looking for the firstsnow to burn some carbon.Hay Days in Minnesota inearly September is known asthe first big snowmobile showof the season and the officialstart of winter. The crowdswere as big as they can get.The swap meet expanded toanother new field by Entrance4 and the main area was full ofvendors offering incrediblebargains. Traffic, parking andthe heat were challenging asusual and good walking shoesand a wagon were in very highdemand. The swap meet andentertainment need to be expe-rienced first-hand to be fullyappreciated. Congratulationsto the Sno-Barons Snowmo-bile Club of Minnesota whohave been hosting this eventsince 1967.
