Valérie Massadiansix years after her debut feature nana won a silver apricot, french director Valérie Massadian returns to yerevan with her second film Milla, again focusing on a girl in a transitional fase – in this case teenage motherhood. Milla received the special Jury award at the locarno international film festival, among other prizes, and will open the francophone Countries Cinema program on tuesday. Besides screening her own film in yerevan, Massadian will also give a master class and be part of the feature Competition jury.
from her collaborations with photographer nan Goldin in the early 2000s to her approach to her own films’ protagonists, Massadian endeavors to depict those people whom society tends to overlook. her films don’t feature victims or heroes, but real people whose life, love and laughter she highlights in tender, perceptive scenes. Capturing the ‘essence’ of her protagonists is crucial to Massadian, working together intimately with her nonprofessional actors.
You’ve found a beautiful heroine in Sévérine Jonkheere. What were you looking for?“I always work with people, not actors, so first I went around a lot of shelters, screening Nana, hoping to find a teenage mother. Sévérine wasn’t in a shelter, but she saw a flyer and came to a casting. These girls all have the poor workingclass background that I’m interested in. Milla is about resilience and how you grow and change. Sévérine told me stories about her life that were incredibly hard and she just looked at me and said: ‘Well, shit happens’.”
How much of the story did you envisage before you found your protagonists?“I write fake scripts because that’s the only way I can find money, but for me, as soon as it’s written, it’s dead. I don’t think ideas make film – emotions make film, time makes film, tenderness makes film, anger makes film. I can write down the ideas and the emotions that I’m looking for, but then I work with people and everything changes, until the very last moment of editing. After meeting Luc [Chessel] I completely changed everything; it became a love story between two people from very different places and how she evolves through this.”
How did you collaborate to find the story together?“They don’t know the story, I don’t know the story. The story I find in the editing room – that’s why I edit myself. When I'm working with them, the only thing I give them is actions, things to do. I kind of know what I’m looking for because I’ve spent a lot of time with them. For example I gave a Luc some job adverts only featuring unpaid apprenticeships and because I know his views on society, I know this is going to evoke some kind of reaction from him. So my work is basically to invent games. It’s really like children playing together.”
When Luc reads a poem to Milla, is that his own?“It something that he wrote to me when I was very sick and tired. He came to me and handed me this letter, and it gave me strength. What he wrote was beautiful, so I wanted to use it in the film. I edited it because his letter was much longer, so it’s sort of a coproduction.”
And you changed it into a letter to Milla.“Well, Milla is... it’s me. We’re the same.”
Throughout the film we sense how easily things could go wrong for these characters, but the sto-ry doesn’t develop towards either defeat or victory. How do you maintain this delicate tension?“I’m interested in what modern society tends to call ‘invisible people’. There’s an extreme fragility but there’s also an extreme strength. I think there are millions of victories – every day is a victory. But this is not like some flamboyant, melodramatic, glamorous thing; it’s an everyday struggle to flourish or find some harmony step by step. That’s what moves me. A lot of films try to represent this, but mostly from a bourgeois perspective, and then it’s fake. Of course my film is also fantasized, it’s not what really happened, but it is the way she talks, it is the way she laughs, it captures her essence, her animality – which for me is the most important thing in a human being. So I want people to see her, to be there, spend time with her, and ban their impatience. You have a brain, you have blood running through your veins, you have a heart. In the dominant cinema, whether you are there or not, the film doesn’t change. It’s just a product that tastes the same for everyone, like CocaCola. People have become used to films that explain everything, but to me that’s an insult to my intelligence.”
You play a small part in Milla. What does it mean to put yourself on the other side of the camera?“For me there’s no real border between being in front of the camera or behind, because I am in the shot anyway: what you see is the result of how we’ve worked together, been together. But at the moment it was quite useful to make Milla feel at ease and understand what I was asking of her – which was to just be there with me.”
Does it have a special meaning for you to be on a jury and show your film at this festival?“I’m very happy to show my film in Yerevan. The first time I visited was with Nana, and that was very special, as I was the first of my family to come to Armenia. My grandparents, who helped raise me, came to France from Turkey, so that’s where we would always go back to when I was a child. When I first came to Yerevan, it felt very oriental, very Russian, but in the countryside I felt a strong connection with the culture of my grandparents.” SK

Alice Through the Chimneyanna’s War (aleksey fedorchenko, russia, 2018). feature Competition, Cis film Program. 97 12:30, 107 16:00, Moscow Cinema Blue hall.
Aleksey Fedorchenko’s Anna’s War touches on a subject that has been widely explored in cinema, but nevertheless hasn’t lost its relevance to this day: the Holocaust. From a creative standpoint interpreting the Holocaust is becoming trickier and riskier. It requires a fresh approach to avoid the idea and form to be overpowered by thematic familiarity.
Fedorchenko hits the mark by choosing a new perspective. Little Anna, the film’s protagonist, has miraculously survived the Jewish massacres in Ukraine by taking refuge in the chimney of her primary school, which has been turned into a Nazi command center. Not only is this chimney little Anna’s only shelter, it also becomes the narrow prism through which she quietly observes the outside world at war.
There’s almost no dialogue in the film, which makes the work of the main actress all the more difficult. Sixyearold Marta Kozlova tackles her
task with admirable grace and an organic mastery that at times even adult actors can’t achieve. She is the main pillar of the film, as was touched upon in the jury assessment when the film won the Special Jury Award at the Russian film festival Kinotavr: “For creating a stunning image of war through the eyes of a child.”
Indeed, Fedorchenko and Kozlova have together created not merely the character of Anna, but the character of war through Anna. Her perspective is somewhat reminiscent to that of Władysław Szpilman in Roman Polanski’s The Pianist (2002), the narrative seems to browse through Anne Frank’s diary at times, while Kozlova’s own acting skills bring to mind those of such other warmovie children as David Bennent in The Tin Drum (1979), Giorgio Cantarini in Life Is Beautiful (1997) or Asa Butterfield in The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas (2008).
Fedorchenko’s idiosyncratic directorial decisions sometimes create a feeling of magical realism, and at other times manage to generate Alice Through the Looking Glasslike visual tunnels. Passing through these, the audience is able (unlike Anna) to gain a little more insight into the war that this little girl had nothing to do with, but in which she becomes a participant nonetheless. Carefully Structured Chaosnervous translation (shireen seno, Philippines, 2018). feature Competition. 97 10:00 Moscow Cinema red hall, 107 14:00 Moscow Cinema Blue hall.
JapaneseFilipino artist Shireen Seno charts the inner world of an eightyearold in this sensitive and visually bold film. The camera never moves out of the house that sits empty until Yael returns from school. Her father has been working abroad for years and when her mother comes home after a long day’s work in a shoe factory, she appears emotionally drained and distant towards her daughter.
And so Yael resorts to a few of her favorite things. Through repetition, we learn what these are: a daily, minutelong math exercise by telephone; meticulously polishing her shoes; cooking miniature meals in her toy kitchen; and listening to her father’s voice on the cassette tapes he sends to her mother.
Nervous Translation is set in the late eighties, when the Filipino revolutionary government had ousted dictator Ferdinand Marcos and only recently established a fragile democracy. Although
that context might mean nothing to Yael, Seno lets some of the tension rising from the volatile political situation seep into her small world.
Still, uncertainty about her own position within the triangle of her absent father, his dedicated twin brother and her elusive mother are more pressing for Yael. Unfortunately, understanding adult relations requires a level of math she doesn’t master yet. Nevertheless her private arsenal of rituals, charms and magical thinking beautifully demonstrates how chaos can be structured in a child’s mind. SK
Too Close to the Sunregarding Gravity (Matthieu Brouillard, Canada, 2017). documentary Competition. 97 10:00, 18:00 Moscow Cinema small red hall.
Canadian visual artist Matthieu Brouillard opens his debut featurelength documentary Regarding Gravity with a motto by French philosopher Gaston Bachelard about the “psychology of weightlessness”. But it turns out the citation that ends the film is far more relevant: Saint Thomas of Aquino’s exaltation “Let faith provide a supplement for the failure of the senses”.
You see, 63yearold Christian has a severe visual impairment and his close friend, 71yearold Bruce, is not just hard of hearing but also bipolar. Nevertheless, the two buddies have set out on a seemingly impossible mission: they want to fly. Christian is methodical about it, taking step after small step to take him closer to his goal. Bruce on the other hand is more scattershot and impulsive (as befits his condition) but also more attuned to the philosophical and existential implications of their quest.
Much more than a film about disabled people overcoming the odds, Regarding Gravity turns out to be a sensitive portrait of an unusual friendship. Brouillard has had a close relationship with Christian for more than a decade, using him as a model in his photography. That intimacy pays off in spades for this delicate film. JBH
Why We Fightthe son (alexander abaturov, russia/france, 2018). documentary Competition, Cis film Program. 97 12:00, 19:30 Moscow Cinema small red hall.
Young Russian director Alexander Abaturov tries to reconnect with his fallen cousin by immersing himself in a training camp for Spetsnaz soldiers in his documentary debut The Son, a reflection on the allure of the army. What drives young boys to enlist, leave home and train to kill and be killed? Abaturov is looking for answers after the unfortunate and seemingly pointless death of his cousin Dima, who fell during a Russian military operation in Dagestan.
Although the starting point is extremely personal, Abaturov is not interested in solely making a film about his cousin. Instead he shows all the other Dima’s out there: young boys on the verge of manhood, willing to give up their lives for their country. Pulling some strings with Russian officers Abaturov managed to film at a secret army base, where cadets are trained to be part of the Spetsnaz special forces.
Few words are exchanged in this harsh setting where a military doctrine reigns. And yet the shots Abaturov creates seem immensely sympathetic towards the trainees, as if the director is looking for signs of his own cousin amongst the group of struggling, shavenheaded boys who’ll soon face the same dangers Dima did. Big Brother's Digital Gluttony omnipresent (ilian djevelekov, Bulgaria, 2017). feature Competition, francophone film Program. 87 10:00, 97 17:30, Moscow Cinema Blue hall.
Emil is not only a big brother, but also a big son, a big father and a big boss in Omnipresent, a black comedy about the allure and danger of smartphone voyeurism. It starts as a practicality. The bedridden fatherinlaw of Emil (Velislav Pavlov) suspects someone is stealing his valuables, so a camera is installed in the living room and connected to Emil’s smartphone. Enjoying this new ability to spy on his family, Emil decides to take it up a notch and discreetly installs cameras throughout the family house. Suddenly, he can see the lives of his close ones in a completely new way. Love affairs, medical quirks and family secrets won’t go unnoticed anymore. As the title suggests Emil is everywhere, and he sure is enjoying it.
Getting caught up in this role of big bro ther, Emil shapes his whole social and professional life around the ability to see what others can’t. In his job as an advertising agent he uses his powers to trump competitors; as a lover he uses it to win a wo man’s heart. But the flow of information is so vast, so unending, that Emil looses sight of unmedia ted reality. What starts out as
a means to an end soon becomes the end itself. Like a digital hermit Emil isolates himself from his peers, wat ching life through the filmed experiences of others.
As he did in his debut feature Love.net (2011) Bulgarian writer, producer and director Ilian Djevelekov uses technology to reflect on the way love, friendship and family are experienced in contemporary society. Although he takes it to a greater extreme, Emil mirrors our collective obsession with smartphones, social media feeds and livestreams. Updating the ideas of George Orwell’s 1984 for today’s world, Omnipresent shows that everyone can become a big brother now. While that may seem alluring for some, Djevelekov makes the case that this digital gluttony should be balanced with a healthy diet of unmediated experiences. HE
Coming Back Homethe house by the sea (robert Guédiguian, france, 2017). opening film. 87 17:00 Moscow Cinema red hall, 97 20:30 Cinema star rio Mall.
Director, screenwriter and producer Robert Guédiguian has set his twentieth film The House by the Sea in his native lands, in a bay not far from his home town Marseille. There, the three middleaged children of Maurice gather at their elderly father’s seaside villa.
Armand (Gérard Meylan), Joseph (JeanPierre Darroussain) and Angèle (Ariane Ascaride, the director’s wife) haven’t gathered at their childhood home for years, and haven’t really been in touch with each other or their father, who is strapped to bed due to his illness. Maurice’s only daughter turns out to have had strong reasons for leaving her paternal home: twenty years ago her own daughter died while Maurice was supposed to be looking after her.
Their native village is almost empty: house
owners are raising the rents, many have left and only the old fish restaurant remains, where one can reminisce about the past with a glass of wine. The family’s relations, among themselves as well as with other locals and neighbors, bring to mind discolored old photographs: the memories are still fresh, but something has gone missing. The presence of Joseph’s new girlfriend, who’s half his age at most, points to the arrival of new times and developments. Angèle herself also gets a lot of attention from a much younger local fisherman. But coming back to the villa also means coming face to face with their own past, which manifests itself through various memories and emotions.
Guédiguian uses the same actors in almost all his films, creating his own kind of French commune. While it’s unclear to what extent the film is autobiographical, the director has said that The House by the Sea contains some of his boyhood memories from Marseille. As a result, Guédiguian reaches the nostalgic culmination of his filmography, which aside from being a personal family drama, is concerned with sociopolitical issues as well. DM
Brave Old Worldexshaman (luiz Bolognesi, Brazil, 2018). documentary Competition. 87 10:00, 97 21:00 Moscow Cinema small red hall.
A very serious clash of civilizations, burdened on one man’s shoulders, is at the center of Brazilian director, screenwriter and anthropologist Luiz Bolognesi’s documentary Ex-Shaman. Before 1969 shaman Perpera had never seen a white man. His tribe had been living in the Amazon basin for around 4,000 years. They were warriors with an intricate and a strong connection to the spiritual world. When the whites arrived, they brought along diseases previously unknown to the locals. Many fell ill and died.
Shaman Perpera, then 20, was forced to leave
his native lands and lifestyle. After years of religious persecution he finally became a part of the Christian church as a groundskeeper. He humbly does his job in his white longsleeve jacket and black pants. Yet he still sleeps with the lights on, cautious of the lost souls seeking revenge.
Bolognesi and his cinematographer Pedro J. Márquez and editor Ricardo Farias have created an epic contemporary fable on the borders of documentary and fiction. Their shaman is real and, if you stop to think about it, not so “ex”. This is a topical, complex and perhaps at times confusing film. However that last qualifier says more about the modern world, which has rejected spirits and intermediaries of the kind that Perpera once was. To this day he cautiously listens to the wind and the sounds of animals, even if they’re interrupted by church bells. DM

family secrets, hidden memories, cursed heritage, and echoes of the past haunt the present in the films of this year’s armenian Panorama program.
There’s something secretive about Yeva, the protagonist of the eponymous feature which opens this year’s Armenian Panorama program. What Yeva is hiding, we don’t know. Only one thing is certain: a dark episode from her past can shake things up in the present. That’s a common theme throughout this year’s crop of Armenian films.
Having fled her influential and imposing inlaws, Yeva takes refuge in one of the villages in the region of Karabakh, where the impact of the border conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan
resonates with her own suffering. In this impressive feature Iranbased director Anahid Abad shows how the traumas of history are always inescapable.
The films in the Armenian Panorama which take place in and around presentday Armenia show a country struggling with its history and with the atrocities that have shaped its culture. Even outside Armenia history fights its way to the fore. In Robert Deranian’s Tabu this is the case for David, a Miamibased Armenian student who falls in love with his Turkish classmate Leyla. Aware of the horrors that were perpetrated on his ancestors by hers, David struggles to bypass history to establish a relationship in this loose adaptation of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet. In contrast Leyla has no clue of the events of 1915, nor does she feel the need to address something she hasn’t been part of.
A more insistent denial takes place in Suren Babayan’s Land Surveyors, a metaphorical fairy
tale about the history embedded in lands in the west where Armenian life was almost completely evaporated by Ottomans during the 1915 genocide. Two land surveyors who have been taught to “mind their own business” plant Turkish flags on an Armenian gravesite, unaware of or even uninterested in the history that literally lies beneath their feet. Combining Armenian ecclesiastical chants, Turkish nationalist songs and an allegorical narrative Babayan suggests that one can never completely get rid of history.
When we project these themes onto contemporary portraits – of Sevan fishermen in Arthur Sahakyan’s With the Wind, of an outcast shepherd in Mane Grigoryan’s Between Sky and Earth, of the Yerevan citizens in Manne’s Adaptation – one is tempted to imagine their links with history. How do they perceive the echoes of the past in their very own present where history runs as deep as the treacherous waters of lake Sevan? HE
today, the russian émigré writer of armenian descent sergei dovlatov is famous. Back in his own time, he could find no place to put his talents, as the biopic dovlatov shows. this tragic, dreamlike portrait of the Brezhnevera soviet union opens the Cis film Program.
To become a published author in the Soviet Union one has to be a member of the writers’ union. To become part of the writers’ union one has to publish first. Officials used excuses like these to make a career for unconventional Sovietera writers like Joseph Brodsky and Sergei Dovlatov virtually impossible.
In Dovlatov Alexey German Jr. (Paper Soldier, Under Electric Clouds) shows the trials and tribulations of the cursed author over the course of one week, as he tries to make ends meet without losing his artistic integrity – another feat that’s virtually impossible in Soviet Russia.
Serbian actor Milan Marić beautifully embodies the misunderstood writer. His Dovlatov is as kind and gentle as he is cynical, ironic and snarky, contrarian qualities that only strengthened officials’ resolve not to publish any of his works. Instead the author of Pushkin Hills and The Suitcase is asked to write about an obscure construction worker with a knack for poetry, and a festive event at a factory where the workers dress up as Russia’s literary greats (Pushkin, Dostoyevsky, Tolstoy) to celebrate efficient output. A slap in the face of both Dovlatov himself and literary history in general.
Through Dovlatov’s trials and tribulations German captures the absurdities of Brezhnevera life in sprawling, dreamlike tracking shots.
This Soviet Union is a place of (creative) stagnation and melancholic geniuses. Only later, when Dovlatov emigrates to New York, does his work find a foothold in a by then postSoviet Russia.
It makes Dovlatov a fitting opening film for this year’s CIS Film Program, where the focus lies on cinematic highlights from the nations of the Commonwealth of Independent States, a cooperative union of postSoviet countries. Highlighting some of the best new films from these diverse countries, the program celebrates the artistic possibilities that open up when artists are encouraged to put their talents to use.

ever since its inception, the Golden apricot festival has made room for activities to strengthen the local film industry. in this celebratory fifteenth festival year, these are gathered and expanded on under the new header Gaiff Pro, which also casts a wider international net.
The two main components of the new industry platform are the crossborder regional coproduction market C2C and the CineThink program. Aside from these, GAIFF Pro also encompasses a plethora of panels, showcases and master classes.
While the C2C market’s name playfully invokes the Black Sea to the west and the Caspian Sea to the east, the Lesser Caucasus mountain range that lies in between defines the market’s geographical boundaries. “We’re not just looking at Armenia, but the entire Lesser Caucasus region, which includes Armenia, Azerbaijan, Iran, Turkey and Georgia”, explains GAIFF Pro coordinator Sona Karapoghosyan. “We’re host
ing up to three projects from each country, by emerging filmmakers working on their first or second featurelength film, who will meet with around 35 producers and market representatives from around the world. Aside from this there will also be eight workinprogress projects from all over the region. They’re all here to meet each other, find possible coproduction or cooperation partners, and also have some fun in Yerevan.”
The yearround program CineThink offers training for local filmmakers as well as screenings in various Armenian cities. The filmmakers have already followed a series of training sessions (see picture) focused on public speaking skills in collaboration with the Think training course. “The core of their process are the TEDtalk techniques”, says Karapoghosyan. “Our trainings applied those techniques to film pitching. They will culminate in a pitching session next Friday, where the best project will get an award, supported by the Prime Minister of Armenia.”
While most of the industry activities are open to GAIFF Proaccredited guests only, there are some public events. Most prominent of these is the C2C Showcase film program, screening nine films which came to fruition through
one of the festival’s development activities, from the longstanding ArmeniaTurkey Cinema Platform to the Directors Across Borders program. Karapoghosyan: “These will be screening for free at Moscow Cinema as showcases, with some of the directors present.”
These kinds of meetings are what a festival is all about, and Karapoghosyan is happy to be able to share these experiences with participants from Armenia’s surrounding countries this year. “It’s not just about the development of the film industry”, she says. “It’s about peacebuilding and coproduction within the entire region, which of course has very complicated relations.” JBH
the centenary of ingmar Bergman's birth provides good reason for looking back on the legacy of this prolific and influential film auteur, whose private and professional lives were intricately entwined.
“I love this little world inside the thick walls of this playhouse, and I’m fond of the people who work in this little world”, says theater actor Oskar in Ingmar Bergman’s Fanny and Alexander (1982). “Outside is the big world, and sometimes the little world succeeds in reflecting the big one so that we understand it better.”
We can hear Swedish film and theater director Ingmar Bergman loud and clear speaking through his character. On July 14 it will be exactly a hundred years ago that Bergman was born, and the festival pays tribute to this influential auteur by screening two of his iconic films as well as a new documentary on Bergman’s life, work and legacy by Swedish director Jane Magnusson.
Bergman – A Year in Life revolves around the year 1957. In the space of twelve months, Bergman premièred The Seventh Seal, made Wild Strawberries, staged four theater productions, a television play and a radio play, and was hospitalized with a severe stomach ulcer. Magnusson uses this manic and pivotal year to reflect on every aspect of Bergman’s life, both professional and private. A distinction that is hard to make with this creative workaholic: the director’s many love affairs were mostly with women he worked with on set, and in Magnusson’s view his almost compulsive output often served to explore unresolved issues that haunted him in his personal life.
Bergman was married five times, had a number of affairs and fathered nine children, whom he hardly ever saw. It testifies to a complicated relationship with marriage and family life, themes he thoroughly explored in many of his films. In Summer with Monika (1953) he incorporates them in a comingofage story about a young workingclass couple who briefly escape the constraints of society together. Capturing the spirit of its time (and with the added shock value of a now utterly innocentlooking nude scene), it created a splash. An iconic closeup of lead actress Harriet Andersson, staring straight into the camera, perfectly illustrates Bergman’s use of his actors’ faces to reflect the human soul.
Besides malefemale relationships, the relationship between man and God is another recurring theme in Bergman’s work, stemming from his own ambivalent feelings about religion. God cannot be found, but is nevertheless still searched for. In Winter Light (1963), one of Bergman’s personal favorites, this search is embodied by Tomas, a priest suffering a crisis of faith who has become incapable of making emotional connections.
Magnusson reveals that Bergman called in a doctor to dampen lead actor Gunnar Björnstrand’s mood. Despite these kinds of severe manipulations, Bergman’s unique, intuitive way of directing was a major reason why actors loved working with him. It’s also why his films still deserve to be seen and seen again, because they tell a different story every time. Bergman’s creative output shows a sensitivity to matters he couldn’t analyze, which makes for pleasantly ambiguous films. When he was interviewed about Persona (1966), his most interpreted, analyzed and debated movie, years after its making, Bergman said that he might have made the film differently then. But he concluded: “If you always knew what you were doing, you probably wouldn’t do it.” SK
