Dear Students, Parents/Guardians, and Friends of WCMS, Well into the second quarter of this school year, I want to express my thanks for all those able to attend the recent Parent/Teacher conferences. WCMS appreciates the opportunity to speak with the parents/guardians as we form relationships benefiting our children. Working together to build our children’s future provides the bond of success for all. The WCMS School Community Council approved the change of “free dress Friday” to “uniforms every day of the week”. This change will occur after coming back from Winter Break. This means your child will need to wear a school T-shirt Monday to Friday. We realize this change is in the middle of a school year and hope you can work with us for a successful transition into the new uniform rule. If you need assistance, please feel free to contact me at 338-6830, x102. The Student Leadership team is working on an electronics guideline document. Although in the first stages of development, students are working to make a presentation to the staff on the pros and cons of having electronics on campus before and after school. This would be another change to the current WCMS rules which currently state no electronics are allowed on campus at any time. Hope you have a wonderful Veterans Day and Thanksgiving Day. Show your pride in being a “Minihune”. Aloha, Melissa Speetjens Principal 9555 Huakai Street Waimea, HI 96796 Phone: 338-6830 Waimea Canyon Middle School is ADA accessible. 7TH GRADE SCIENCE FAIR UPDATE

Hui Nalu students should have all began their Science Fair experiments by now! In class, we have worked on using their gathered information to form their hypothesis. The hypothesis is their prediction on what they think will happen in their experiment with the different variables. This prediction is based on their research, observations, or prior knowledge. We also have worked on identifying the controls, variables, and number of trials in the students' experiments. Based on that, the students created a materials list and procedure for their experiment.

IMPORTANT REMINDER - Science Fair data is due no later than Thurs. 11/14 (for B day students) or Fri. 11/15 (for A day students)!! Students who do not have their data to show by the deadline will have to choose an alternate project to complete for a lower grade. . Please email Mrs. Yamagata at: [email protected], or call 338-6830 x144, if you have any questions or concerns.

A great big MAHALO goes out to all the family and friends of Waimea Canyon Middle School who have been sending in old telephone books for our phone book recycling drive. Your support is wonderful! Keep sending those books in whenever you come across them. The collection continues until May.

A great big THANK YOU goes out to all the family and friends of Waimea Canyon Middle School who have

been clipping out ‘BoxTops for Education’ labels. We are slowly but surely making our way towards the $1,000.00 goal! So far your kokua has us at $645.00 – more than halfway there. The school will use the $1,000.00 to purchase technology items. This is an ongoing effort, so keep looking for those labels, cutting them out, and sending them to school!

EUROPE TRIP 2015

Last year, WCMS staff led a

group of 45 middle and high

school students and parents to

China through EF Tours. WCMS

is again planning to take a

group on an educational trip.

This time, students will be exploring Europe. During

the spring break in March 2015, the group will be

visiting Rome, London and Paris. While spearheaded

by WCMS staff, students and family from WHS are

invited to join this exciting adventure. An

informational meeting will be held on Wednesday,

November 13, 2013, at WCMS in

Mrs. Penny Shimomura's

room, D-102 at 5:30 pm. For

more information, you may

contact Mrs. Shimomura at

The Flu Clinic at Waimea Canyon Middle School has been completed for 2013-2014 school year. More than half of the students and staff participated in the clinic held on Tuesday, October 22nd in the school’s cafeteria.

With the help and support of everyone the flu clinic was a success! Thank you for your continued support each school year. The flu clinic was free and a great opportunity for students and staff to receive their flu vaccine. If your child was absent or didn’t have the opportunity, please contact your child’s physician.

For more information or concerns regarding the flu vaccine, please call Anita Applegate, School Health Aide at 338-6817, your child’s physician, the Department of Health Lihue Branch at 241-3387, or the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention at 1-800-232-4636.

Again, thank you for permitting your child to participate in the flu vaccination program at Waimea Canyon Middle School. It is important that your child stay safe and healthy!
