Dear Senior:

In a few short months, you will be out of high school and embarking on a new journey. The senior year is the time for you to take stock of your skills and demonstrate them through problem solving and self-directed learning. The Senior Project process gives you the opportunity to do this by choosing an area of special interest, combining your knowledge and skills from various disciplines, satisfying your curiosity, and productively utilizing your talents.

Your Senior Project experience will involve true exploration. You will select a topic of your choice, gather a knowledge foundation through research, and write a research paper related to your chosen topic. You will then complete a product that demonstrates application of some aspect of your research. This product must involve a learning stretch. You will need to engage in a product that causes you to grow intellectually and emotionally. The last facet of this learning journey is to give a formalized speech in front of a team of judges. After your formal speech, you will have the opportunity to field questions from the team of judges. These questions will be related to your research, your product, and your personal learning. To help the judges learn more about you and your Senior Project, they will review your Senior Project portfolio, which will include your research paper as well as other items.

Not sure where to begin? Let’s assume that you are really interested in ecology. You might choose to study the effects of plastic pollution on the ocean environment. You conduct independent research and use this information to write your research paper. As a result of this information, you organize and conduct a neighborhood cleanup. During your speech, you will talk formally about what your research paper taught you and what you learned during the product phase.

You are a senior! You are special and represent years of education. It is time to show what you know, what you can do, and what you can achieve. You are ready for this experience. As John F. Kennedy once said, “Effort and courage are not enough without purpose and direction.” It is time for you to stand up and be counted!

Sincerely,

Megan Senn Cassie WatsonSenior Project Co-Chair Senior Project Co-Chair

Dear Parents and Guardians of Seniors:

As your son or daughter may have indicated to you, Loudon High School has adopted the Senior Project as part of the English IV curriculum. Your student’s reading, writing, speaking, thinking, accessing information, managing time, problem solving, and organizational skills will be showcased in a four-part process. The components of the Senior Project include a research paper, a tangible product related to some aspect of the paper, community involvement, a portfolio, and an oral presentation that is given before a team of judges. Your student must complete each component of the Senior Project. Remember, this senior project experience cannot rely solely upon what your student already knows, but must demonstrate an aspect of new learning and growth (a learning stretch).

A successful Senior Project involves parental and teacher support as well as student initiative and self-discipline. Grades will be given for meeting deadlines and for the completion of the Senior Project components. Each phase of the Senior Project process must be successfully completed before moving on to the next one. Your student will be informed of the deadlines and requirements as we proceed. A Senior Project handbook outlining the requirements has been given to your student. Early in the process, a letter of intent will be due, which requires your student to explain his/her research paper and project focus.

In a few short months, after years of acquiring skills and knowledge, overcoming frustrations, and demonstrating perseverance, your student will be a high school graduate. These are, indeed, exciting times! Join us in a last senior journey.

If you have any questions, please call Megan Senn or Cassie Watson, English Department faculty, at 865-458-4326 or email [email protected] or [email protected].

Sincerely,

Megan Senn Cassie Watson

Letter of Intent

As the first step in the Senior Project, you will declare your intent and commitment to your project. The letter will be organized in the format below.

Paragraph 1: What and Why Describe the general area of interest of your senior project. Explain why you chose the topic and what (if any) you already know or have done in the area to help build your knowledge base. Explain how this topic will be a learning stretch for you.

Paragraph 2: Research Discuss any questions that you might want answered through your research and list any resources that you can use.

Paragraph 3: Product and Community Involvement Describe how your research paper relates to your product. Describe your product—what it is, who is involved, potential cost, time involved and possible resources. Explain how this will be a learning challenge to you. If you are choosing not to do a product, you must state the reason why, and explain how your community involvement relates to your topic.

Paragraph 4: Plagiarism Make sure you have a solid understanding of plagiarism and why it is important not to copy other people’s work. Make sure you understand the repercussions of the act. (You may want to copy the plagiarism paragraph from the sample letter and include it in your own letter.)

End with a closing and your signature.

Megan Senn/Cassie WatsonLoudon High School1039 Mulberry StreetLoudon, TN 37774

Dear Ms. Senn/ Ms. Watson:

The focus of my senior project will be English Language Learner education. I plan to become a Spanish interpreter after graduating from college, and I am hoping that the knowledge I gain while completing my Senior Project will enable me to understand how to work with those who are learning the English language. I have never worked with ELL students before, but I have observed the strategies that my mother, a kindergarten teacher, has used in her classroom with students who speak a different language. My mentor, Ms. Miller, an ELL teacher at Loudon Elementary School, will assist me in this effort.

While conducting the research for my project, I will focus on the following questions: What strategies do teachers use to help students learn a new language? What are the frustrations that students experience? What makes the English language a difficult one to learn? I will use several resources for my research, including interviews with my mentor and students in her classroom, as well as reading material that my mentor has suggested.

After researching, I plan to develop my tangible product: word games that can be used to help students learn the English language. I anticipate that the product will cost approximately $10.00 and can be completed in three weeks. I will create the cards with elementary students in mind because I plan to use them as I complete my community involvement, which will include being involved in the after-school tutoring program for ELL students at LES. After using the word games with students, I can adapt the cards as necessary to make the games more effective. I plan to donate the games to the ELL program at LES after my project is completed.

Plagiarism is a serious offense. If I take information that other people have written without giving them credit, I am stealing their work. If I am untruthful about the tasks I have completed or the hours I have worked, I will jeopardize my grade on my Senior Project and my graduation. I will complete my work the right way and not place my personal honor in jeopardy.

Sincerely,

(your signature here after printing)

How to Write a Reflection

Integral to your production of a portfolio is the process of reflection. Reflection is not an “add-on” piece to your learning process, portfolio, or practice. It is integral to the complex process of learning more about your topic. Successful reflection enables self-awareness, personal and professional growth and improved writing practices.

Reflection means thoughtfully considering or meditating on a topic. The root meaning of reflect is “to bend back,” and one meaning appropriate for our purposes is “to think quietly and calmly.” When reflective writing is assigned, what is suggested is a combination of calm, quiet thinking with a retrospective focus – looking back over a period of time and considering its meaning and significance in connection with your experience. Reflective writing is a route to self-knowledge, as well as a genre in which writers share personal insights with others.

You will have opportunities to reflect on your experiences three times during the semester as you complete various parts of your project.

Ultimately, self-reflection will result in insights as to:

1. how and why you think the way you do about learning 2. what actions you took, what choices you made 3. the meaning of your actions and choices in the future4. what learning and growth has occurred 5. how you can change your practices in the future

Guidelines for Senior Project Reflections:

1. Reflections must be typed.2. Reflections must be double-spaced, one page in length. No more, no less.3. Reflections should be roughly three paragraphs.4. Reflections should be in 12 point Times New Roman font.5. Pages should have 1” margins.6. Reflections are formal pieces of writing. Therefore, proper capitalization and spelling is

expected. Contractions should be written out (i.e. “I cannot” instead of “I can’t.”)7. Reflection writing should address insights such as those above. A true “thinking” about

your learning should be apparent in your reflection.8. Reflections should be entirely your own work. Samples are provided for guidelines, not

for you to copy.

Reflection: Format Sample

First Name Last NameDateReflection #1

Write a one-page reflection of your Senior project experience to date. Include such

topics as: joys, frustrations, idea changes, mentors, etc. It is often useful to reflect upon your

personal experience and your beliefs and values as a part of your goal-setting, including making

career choices. Three reflections will be required throughout the Senior Project process. The

next three paragraphs include a sample of reflective writing.

“Exhausted! I have worn myself out. I know I always overanalyze pretty much

everything but a lot of times it just holds me back from doing what I need to get done. I have a

ton of confusion about Senior Project but I think it is just because I have confused myself. My

main concerns are doing everything right and making everything look good. I have caught

myself several times thinking about the next step before I am finished with the step I am

supposed to be working on, and it really slows me down.

So far, I have not turned in anything late. I am starting to worry about the research paper

and the community involvement. I think once I get started I will get done in a reasonable

amount of time. The source cards for the research paper took longer than I thought they would.

Even the basic copying of the information took a long time.

I do not know if most seniors feel this way, or is it just me? I keep feeling like I am

behind and I do not have enough time. I am worried that I will not be able to complete my

project in time, but I am on track with everything else. I just have to remind myself that this is a

semester-long process. I cannot get it all done in one day…”

First Name Last NameReflection #2Date

So far, everything has worked out fine for me. I have done all of my assignments on time

and I have completed my hours for community involvement. Picking up rocks and lining the

drains with the rocks at the baseball field was a very easy task to do, but it is not something I

would want to do for the rest of my life. I felt good to be able to do something for the baseball

park where many children play. I was able to work in between my scheduled hours at work,

which was convenient for me. I was the only one there, so it was a little bit of a slow process

without someone to talk to.

I have been able to keep up with my research paper because of the class time we have

been allowed to use the school laptops and the library. I find it very interesting how we are able

to be creative and make up our own research papers with many genres to pick from. For me, it

keeps things interesting which helps to keep me from procrastinating. This is my favorite part of

the project so far because you can do so many different things with the genres without having to

type out a long, boring, plain research paper. I enjoyed writing my newsletter the most; it was an

easy genre for me to use with some of the scientific research I found. I created my own top ten

ways to save the environment, which I hope will be useful to some people.

This semester has flown by, and it is getting closer and closer to presenting our projects,

which I am getting very anxious to do. I am not feeling nervous yet, but whenever the time gets

closer, I am sure I will be. I think I can handle it, as long as I practice my speech and continue to

get my work done on time. A big struggle for me is speaking in front of my peers. I get nervous

that people will laugh at me, even though my teacher assures me that they will not. At least we

are all in the same Senior Project boat together. I am just ready to get it over and done with!

Resume

What is a resume?

A resume (also spelled résumé) is a brief document that summarizes your education, employment history, and experiences that are relevant to your qualifications for a particular job for which you are applying. The purpose of a resume (along with your cover letter) is to get an interview. Research has shown than it takes an average of ten (10) interviews to receive one (1) job offer, so your resume needs to be persuasive and perfect.

The general purpose resume usually contains five sections:

Contact Information: Name, address, professional email, phone

Education: School and expected date of graduation

Skills and/or Experience: List any work experience or special skills and briefly discuss and describe them

Honors, activities, and outreach: List any awards or commendations from work or school

References: 3 non-relatives who can attest to your qualifications. These can be teachers, former employers, volunteer coordinators, etc. You should contact these people before you list them as references.

LETTER TO THE JUDGES

One of the first impressions the judges will have of you will come from this letter. The purpose of this writing is to give the judges an introduction to you as a whole person, beyond the work you have done on the Senior Project. They will be able to see you as a young adult with goals, interests, and opinions. When they hear you speak at the Senior Presentations, they will most likely bring these insights into their bnunderstanding and consequent assessment of your presentation. Write your letter in correct business format, carefully proof read its contents, and then type it.   Sample letter  1243 Pine AvenueLoudon, TN 37774May 21, 201_ Judges, Senior Project PresentationsLoudon High School1039 Mulberry StreetLoudon, TN 37774 Dear Judges: As a soon-to-be graduate of Loudon High School, I would like to take this opportunity to tell you about some things I now understand. The Senior Project proved procrastination is not the answer, and graduation is truly earned. Also, I can accomplish a lot more than I realized I could when I focus, commit and work hard with persistence. My Senior Project topic is centered on the building industry and alternative building materials and techniques. This past semester I worked part time for a building contractor and learned a lot. One thing that started me really thinking about is how our building choices as consumers create a great deal of environmental pressure. I think that using alternative building methods is one of the answers. The contractor I worked for used steel framing for building homes.  For my project I built a small straw bale constructed garden shed for my family. My grandfather paid for all the materials and my time. To build this shed, I enrolled in a straw bale construction class at the local community college. I drew up the plans and shared them with the contractor who made several suggestions. My family loved the garden shed. Actually, I am pleased with it, but when I build another one, I will do some things differently. I enjoyed writing my research paper on alternative building materials and strategies. The research taught me a lot and gave me so much information. I thoroughly enjoyed working on the garden she, and I feel as if I have a direction for the future. I appreciate the time you will spend looking over my work, and listening to my presentation.  Sincerely,

(sign here after printing) James Robertson

Mentor Interview

Your mentor, in addition to working with you on your product and giving you advice, will also be one of the sources for your research paper. In order to gather information from your mentor, you will need to set up an interview with him or her.

Ideally, you would conduct this interview in person, but if you need to, you can also interview your mentor over the phone or via email. In all cases, you need to make sure that you take detailed notes on your mentor’s responses.

Before you conduct your interview, you will need to turn in a draft of your questions for approval. See the project deadlines schedule for the due date.

Guidelines: 10 questions minimum Do not ask yes or no questions! You will not get any information for your research paper

this way. Try to ask questions that will give you new information. Go beyond the information you

already have in your research notes. Consider asking questions that only someone who works in that field would know the

answer to, such as what the advantages and disadvantages of the job are, or what advice your mentor would have for a person wanting to work in that field.

Your mentor interview notes must be used in your research paper, either as part of the report or in the artifacts.

Your mentor interview must be included on the Works Cited page for your research paper.

A typed copy of your interview questions and answers must be included in your final portfolio. Include your name and the interview date in the heading The title should be “Mentor Interview” Questions should appear in bold-face type Answers should appear in regular type Skip a line when you begin a new question Use Times New Roman 12-point font, single-spaced, 1” margins.

Mentor Thank You Letter Format Your mentor has spent many hours helping you through your product, so it is important that you express your thanks.  Rather than purchase a card-shop thank you note, take time to write a thank-you letter.  Use the format below. You must indent each paragraph.

You will need a stamped addressed envelope to put in the back pocket of your portfolio.  We will mail the letter to your mentor at the end of the semester.

Include a copy of the letter in your portfolio.

December 12, 2013 Dear Mr. Joe,

Paragraph 1:  Be sure to mention what you are thanking your mentor for.  Example: "I want to thank you for all of the hours you spent helping me to produce a web page."

Paragraph 2:  Next, include a line or two to say specifically what you appreciate about your mentor: a specific quality, feature, or action would be appropriate.  Be honest.

Paragraph 3:  Finally, you should end the note with a general statement such as, "I hope that you continue to mentor young people because you have so much to offer."

                                                                            Sincerely,

(sign here after printing)

                                                                            Your Name

Senior Project Presentations

Your final exam in English IV is your Senior Project Presentation.  You will be assigned a date and time to present your presentation to a panel of judges from the school and business communities. The presentation is the final activity for your Senior Project.  After researching your topic and producing a product, you are now ready to talk about what you have learned.  You have knowledge and expertise within your chosen topic, and now is the time to show it off. Several areas will be evaluated:1.  The portfolio2.  Speech content3.  Speech delivery4.  Visual aids5.  Learning stretch6.  Time7.  Appearance8.  Questions from judges The day of the Senior Project Presentations is exciting for everyone.  You will be anxious, yet prepared to do your best.  The time for celebrating is near.  This culminating part of the Senior Project will give you the feeling of achieving a rite of passage earned by hard work, fun, setbacks, self-discipline, and self-direction. Presentation Requirements:1.  The speech must be eight to ten minutes long.2.  You must have a Prezi.  Organization of the Prezi slides will coincide with the speech

guidelines and will be given prior to the organization of the presentation.3.  If you use a video, you may stop your speech for two minutes to watch the video (with sound).  If there is no sound and you describe the events in your video, your video may be as long as five minutes (but no longer).

Presentation Tips1.  You may use note cards in your presentation, but do not read from them.2. The Prezi slides can help you to remember the main points of your speech.3.  Involve the judges as much as possible     -Did you make a booklet?  Provide each judge with a copy.     -Did you make handouts?  Give them out at the appropriate time.     -Gesture toward your Prezi slides as you speak.4. Practice in front of anyone who will watch and listen!

Audio-Visual Component When you are preparing for your presentation before you panel of judges, remember the old adage "Seeing is believing."      -When you present to the judges, you are the expert.     -Your job is to prepare a presentation that is articulate, informative, and interesting.     -You could incorporate charts, posters, or graphs into Prezi slides.     -You may consider a video that shows you in some phase of your project.     -If your project is musical, an audiotape or CD may be appropriate. Along with the use of audio-visual equipment in your presentation comes the responsibility of being properly prepared.  If in doubt, check with your teacher before your presentation.  You must have your Prezi slides completed for the practice presentation. Use the list below as a responsibility check:      ____ Screen     ____ Overhead projector     ____ Monitor/DVD player     ____ CD player     ____ Computer     ____ Other Remember: The audio-visual component should enhance the presentation, not overshadow it.

Planning, preparing, and presenting require responsibility:  YOURS!
