Pharmacy Technician (PHT.S.STC) – individuals must be credentialed in order to practice as a pharmacy technician. Students do not need short-term certificate in order to practice. Students may sit for the credentialing exam after completing the 2 core Pharm Tech courses and be successful. Strategy being implemented:

Summer 2015: Attendance policy and commitment to learning grade being placed in ALH1122 – Pharmacy Tech I both online and face-to-face. Rationale: Students struggle in this course due to

lack of attendance and completion of assignments. Fall 2015: Reduce number of support courses to:

o BIO1107 or BIO1121 or BIO1141o ando MAT1130 or MAT1470

Spring 2016: Implement employer surveys to determine need of support courses

Fall 2018: Began the process of accreditation for Pharmacy Technician due to changes in legislation. Will be applying for accreditation and will need to supply employer surveys as part of outcomes assessment by Spring 2019.

Clinical Phlebotomy (CPST.S.STC) – individuals do not need short-term certificate in order to practice as a phlebotomist. Many students are hired once they have completed the 1st core course in the certificate. In order to sit for the credentialing exam a student must complete the 2nd core course. Credentialing is not a requirement for employment. Strategies implemented:

Maintain current program requirements; Rationale: Employers and practicum supervisors note students better prepared for employment if all courses in the program are completed; On-site evaluations of practicum students note better performance on site when support course are taken prior to beginning practicum

Fall 2015: Implement employer survey moved date to Spring 2017 due to working on obtaining accreditation of the CLT program. Program Director oversees the CLT AAS program, Clinical Phlebotomy and Specimen Processing. Program will utilize RAR to gather the data for Spring 2017.

Moved to Fall 2018. As of Spring 2018 the ALH Chairperson has taken on the responsibility of the CPST.S.STC certificate and has implemented an employer survey to be conducted Fall 2018 for the Spring 2018 completers. Also, looking at the need for ALH1101, BIO1107 and COM2206 within the certificate.

Summer 2018 will look at marketing certificates. Labor statistics indicate need for employees for Community Health Worker, Medical Scribe, Patient Care Technician, but we are not seeing the enrollment.

Below are the Recommendations for Action made by the review team. Describe the progress or changes made toward meeting each recommendation over the last year. Responses from the previous year’s Annual Update are included, if there have been no changes to report then no changes to the response are necessary.

RECOMMENDATIONS Status Progress or Rationale for No Longer ApplicableBased on the recent experience of the Review Team, it is probably not necessary for the department to complete two separate Program Review self-studies for ALH and MAS. For the next Program Review, the department is encouraged to provide a common Section I and II combining both departments, and then discuss ALH and MAS separately within Sections III and IV without creating a separate self-study for each. Also, it is recommended that in the next self-study all full-time tenure track faculty be involved in writing the self-study and preparing the information so that the burden does not fall disproportionately on the department chair.

During the meeting with the Review Team there was a lengthy discussion regarding general education and program outcome assessment. It emerged that data exists and is being collected on an ongoing basis, but results of outcome assessment were not shared in the self-study. The department needs to be able to document that assessment is occurring at the both the general education and program outcome level. Being able to document our assessment work will be increasingly important to our institutional accreditation in the years to come. The department is strongly encouraged to share these assessment results in its Annual Updates submissions and highlight specific assessment results in the next Program Review self-study.

Next Program Review in FY2018-2019.

It appears that there is the potential for expansion of the MAS program – existing student demand and clinical sites could apparently accommodate a doubling or perhaps even tripling of the size of the current MAS cohort. The department is encouraged to submit a formal cost-benefit analysis to the Provost’s Office with itemized detail regarding the costs that would be incurred if the program were expanded along with the resultant increase in enrollment and completion. The department is strongly encouraged to work the Budget Office to generate dollar amounts for the faculty costs of increasing the program compared to the additional revenue that would be generated by increased enrollment. How would the contribution margin be impacted – and how should this be weighed against the potential number of increased graduates in MAS in terms of Performance Based Funding? Within the next year

Formulating a plan for marketing and increasing capacity. Plan development (Spring 2015)Plan implementation (Summer 2015)Assessment of plan (Summer 2016)

MAS had a change its program director Fall 2015, therefore the timeline for formulating the plan has been moved to begin Spring 2017. Program Director is currently working to incorporate new accreditation Standards and Core Curriculum by Fall 2016 into existing courses. The faculty are reviewing all syllabi and validating all assessment tools.

MAS Program Director will be reviewing the implemented plan that took place in Summer 2015 to make a final decision on the effects of the MAS program expansion for the Provost’s office to review in Spring 2018.

Summer 2018: MAS Program Director initiated the 15 month to completion to be held at the Dayton Campus as an effort to increase enrollment. As of Spring 2018 there are currently 7 students ready to take the first limited enrollment classes for Summer 2018.

the department is asked to submit to the Provost’s Office a recommendation regarding whether expansion of the MAS program is feasible and fiscally desirable based on the factors mentioned above.

The department’s self-study noted the “need to provide more continuing education opportunities”. What is the demand for continuing education by those working in the field who lack credentials? Is there a community need that is not being met? The department is encouraged to carefully consider how Prior Learning Assessment might play a role in any continuing education opportunities that the department begins offering.

Medical Assistant Technology program is working with Premier Health Network to develop a plan to provide continuing education for all credentialed medical assistants working for the Premier Health Network.

Spring 2017 - The MAS program provided competency assessment and remediation to 400+ Premier Health Network medical assisting employees. The plan is to make this an ongoing project for the Premier Health Network.

Spring 2018: The MAS program began the process of providing competency assessment to all new Premier Health Network Medical Assistants as part of their orientation. This will be an ongoing project for 2018.

It sounds as though the MAS department has excellent retention, completion, and employment numbers. How might these numbers be used to recruit students to the program? The department is encouraged to explore how these successes might be used in marketing the program.

Under “Noteworthy innovations” in Section IV the department listed “completed several students who had extraordinary circumstances (family and/or personal illness, pregnancy)”. Helping students who experience extraordinary circumstances complete is no small task, and the department has earned commendations to the extent it has been able to accomplish this. Are there best practices in this regard that could increase success for other students, perhaps strategies that could be shared with other departments? If there are strategies to be shared, the department is encouraged to identify them and disseminate them via workshops, the Faculty Forum, or some other means.

ALH1101 Computer Literacy AssessmentHealth Science Division

Background:

Computer literacy is an important component of ALH 1101. Whether a student is taking the course in the classroom, online, Tech Prep or CCP, technology has been integrated throughout the curriculum. Below I have outlined the computer skills that are integrated into this course.

eLearn, basic computer skills and cybersecurity are all presented within the first two weeks of the course so that students who start the course but do not finish still are getting exposed to and working on the skills needed for these three topics. HIPAA is about three quarters of the way through the course.

Future Plan:

The college has not established a computer literacy general education rubric as of this date. This course is scheduled to be part of the computer literacy general education evaluation once it becomes available. Once it is determined what needs to be assessed, assignments will be changed and updated to reflect the needs of the college.

eLearn

Classroom students go through a lesson on using eLearn. This includes course email, discussions, dropboxes and quizzes. Throughout the course, students are using all 4 components (course email, discussion, discussions, dropboxes and quizzes) to become proficient in the use of eLearn by the end of the course.

Online students are required to complete the How to Succeed in an Online course prior to signing up for the course. However, this is not always the case. Throughout the course, students are using course email, discussions, dropboxes and quizzes to become proficient in the use of eLearn by the end of the course.

Basic Computer Skills

Because of the need for healthcare professionals to work collaboratively as part of a team, in ALH 1101 we have made the decision to introduce Google Drive to the students and teach them to use word processing (Docs), spreadsheet (Sheets), and presentation (Slides) software in there.

This decision was made as all students have access to Google Drive through their Sinclair student email and since Google Drive is used throughout the course students do have to at least look at their student email inbox periodically.

Docs, Sheets, and Slides in Google Drive work in a similar fashion to Word, Excel, and PowerPoint in Office so skills learned in one are easily transferable to the other. The biggest difference though is the collaborative function of the google software makes it much easier for students to work together on team projects both in classroom and online.

Basic computer skills assessed in this courseo Word processing

Cybersecurity

Cybersecurity is also addressed in this course as an assessed assignment. Students are required to complete an Adobe Presenter on this topic. The presenter is set up that students learn about several topics then are quizzed on the material in that section. Students must achieve 100% on the quiz questions to move on to the next section. Topics assessed in cybersecurity lesson include

Phishing, malware, trojan horse, spyware, viruses, worms, click fraud and keylogger Identifying, creating and using strong passwords Browser tracking and cookies Social media – risks, safe use and addiction

HIPAA

Unique to healthcare but still an important part of computer literacy for healthcare professionals is HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act). This also is part of computer literacy as it addresses some of the ethical aspects of computer use. Again this is done using an Adobe Presenter. The presentation is set up in sections and again they are quizzed at the end of each section and must achieve 100% before moving on to the next section. Topics assessed in HIPAA lesson include

What it is and why is it important Privacy rules and patient rights Protected health information (PHI) Permitted uses and disclosures What you are permitted to access as a healthcare worker Breaches in data and reporting requirements when data breached Penalties when medical records accessed inappropriately HIPAA and social media Computer access security Office for Civil Rights as overseer

To assess students on the cybersecurity and HIPAA lessons, students complete the lesson and when they are finished they receive a certificate. Students download that file and submit to the

ALH1101 Information Literacy AssessmentHealth Science Division

Background:

Information literacy is an important component of ALH 1101. Whether a student is taking the course in the classroom, online, Tech Prep or CCP, information literacy has been integrated throughout the curriculum. Below I have outlined the specific projects that are integrated into this course.Students are introduced to the ALH1101 Lib Guide. The assignments are designed to build upon each other. Students begin with a tutorial to use Films on Demand, in which they find a specific video (that will be used later in the course) and record the item number. Students then review a tutorial on PubMed and CINAHL, followed by running searches on Ocular Toxoplasmosis, in order to get a feel for how each of the tutorials work.

Once the student has completed the tutorial, they are given a list of research topics. Resources are also provide on how to evaluate internet resources. Students, using a template, run a search in each of the four required search engines (Google, Google Scholar, PubMed and CINAHL). They choose their top five results and complete the evaluation of each of the sites as outlined in the template. Once completed, the evaluation is submitted in a dropbox.

Now go to Films on Demand and find a film related to your topic. NOTE: You may have to modify the search you are using to get at least one result. For example instead of search for adolescent elective plastic surgery, if that doesn’t work try elective plastic surgery. If that doesn’t work try plastic surgery.Give NAME of film AND list ITEM NUMBER for film (like it shows in the Films on Demand tutorial):
