The English word derives from the Latin caudex or codex, ( meaning a tree trunk " or block of wood, book; plural codices) a development of Roman wooden writing tablets, a precursor to the modern book

• A machine readable two dimensional code such as the bar codes that you find on every day packaging.

• Each code has the potential to contain and display information.• Most people are familiar with seeing Barcodes and the machines

that scan the codes in supermarket checkouts .• The Barcode is only one of a range of different code formats.• These include Semacode, QR, Target and Aztec

Developing TechnologiesThe Digital Divide

• There is a discrepancy between people who have access to developing technologies and the resources to use new information and communication tools and those who do not have the resources and access to the technology.

• Developing technologies are inclusive and exclusive, creating a sense of affluence or relative poverty, like photography it resides in the commonplace but though used by many its technical language is understood by relatively few.
