Best UpThe future is green or it isn’t
The future is green or else there is no future. An independent observatory for the design of sustainable living, which organizes meetings and events which run parallel to the big Milan shows, all year round. The objective is to create a permanent place for meetings and exchanging knowledge, for spreading throughout the world of design and business the idea that sustainable development is an opportunity not to be missed.

Stating the obviousThe ten secular commandments of sustainable
design: evaluate the existing resources; create
synergy; establish transparent processes; en-
courage informed behaviour; compare oneself
with the parameters of sustainability; safeguard
local communities; respect the environment;
promote positive non-aggressive economic
principals; draw up an energy consumption
budget for each project; combine the beautiful
with the useful.
Put like that, not to share such an open, respect-
ful and democratic production philosophy would
be really shortsighted. But then why are so many
still deaf to such a far-sighted call to arms?
Best Up is the independent observatory-circuit of
sustainable living/design promoted by Clara Man-
tica and Giuliana Zoppis to ensure that projects
are respected according to the Life Cycle Design
– LCD guidelines, a method for analyzing prod-
ucts throughout their entire life-cycle, from their
conception and creation to their distribution and
use, and finally to their withdrawal, reuse and/or
recycling; a method which takes economic, envi-
ronmental, ethical and social parameters into ac-
count. This is an enterprise which is also intended
to be “a place to exchange information and im-
pressions, create synergy, share knowledge and
contacts, to compare methods and research, to
arrive at a common platform and spur companies
on to do more and better”.
Sustainability raised therefore to the level of a
necessary quality, and no longer considered as
the poor relation, “dull colourless recycled card-
board”, but a genuine consistent system made up
of people, products, places, relationships, servic-
es and, why not, visions that all want to achieve
the best (Best, that is: Beautiful, Equitable, Sus-
Tainable), acting in the first person (Up).

The unsustainable is unsustainableIn a recent Best Up publication, Ezio Manzini,
Design lecturer at the Milan Polytechnic and
member of the observatory scientific committee,
wrote:
“For Italian design, transformation towards a
model of sustainable development should be
welcomed as a tremendous opportunity. Italian
design started well, with a critical and cultural
vision of how to act in the correct way which
has been the basis for its success. The paradox
is that right at the moment in which everybody
is citing Italian design as the saviour of the tot-
tering Italian economy, the prevailing idea being
put forward is that of turning production into a
spectacle, an idea which is not only unsustain-
able, but probably also inefficient in terms of in-
ternational competitiveness”.

Quality and common senseAmong the numerous ventures set up by Best Up

to involve those who consider that implementing
sustainable policies is too difficult, without think-

the eco-system. We need new paradigms to refer
to, and now a comparison looking at certifica-
tion and evaluation in the furniture sector can no
longer be avoided, given that much can be done
to respond to the need for greater harmony in the
public, private, domestic and urban spheres”.
Eco is ethicalThe process for setting up an eco-sustainable sys-
tem requires dedication and attention, since it
is evaluated according to parameters that inter-
act and that have a reciprocal influence, but the
benefits are available for all participants: com-
panies can (must) save on materials, resources
and energy (thus showing respect for their own
share-holders), consumers have access to safer
products with a longer life cycle, the whole of
society can enjoy a healthier and more agreeable
environment. The ethical project can only start
from this point.

Shared ceativityComON is the name of the venture undertaken
by a group of young Como entrepreneurs aimed
at identifying and supporting the most promis-
ing European talents in the fields of fashion, de-
sign and art.
It is also the first and extremely interesting sys-
tem of creativity sharing, which in the specific
area of design has seen 14 students and recent
graduates of the Polytechnic of Milan and Como
and the IED (Istituto Europeo di Design) of Milan
and Turin hard at work on the subject of recycling
and eco-sustainability. The prototypes created
with waste material of different kinds, coming
from seven design oriented organizations with
headquarters in the Como area, have all been
produced entirely within the following compa-
nies: Baxter, Gallotti&Radice, Lema, Living Divani,
OMP Porro, Poliform, and Unifor with the help of
their technicians and the advice of Massimiliano
Adami and Lorenzo Damiani: two tutors of proven
talent in the generation of emerging designers.

The eenergy of materialsThe mission of this operation, as Taissa Buescu
(the young Brazilian journalist and curator of the
ComON Design Exhibition, who has chosen to
emigrate to Italy just to work with design) puts
it, – “is to exploit to the maximum the intrinsic
energy in materials already produced, transform-
ing waste products into pieces of furniture, and
thus finding the potential for new uses”. The re-
using of industrial waste in a new productive
cycle, in this case passes over the technique and
harshness of industrial production, and high-
lights the creative capacity of designers and styl-
ists who are just starting out.
Certainly the invitation to the opening of the

fabric are what the factories taking part in the
experiment made available, together with their
technicians to channel the exuberance of the
young people into more industrial and practical
ways. The results are those of prototypes created
at record speed: a week long workshop in which
the tutors divided themselves in four in order to
follow as supervisors all the working groups. The
evening of the opening they were tired, but sat-
isfied with the results (and with the happiness
on the faces of the protagonists) appreciated by
the public and above all by the company owners
who had committed themselves.
Bolder companies, more imaginative designersExamining the seven prototypes, the result of cre-
atively cooking up the remains, with the industri-
al brand products from which the waste material
came from, the eye is immediately caught by how
the experiment reveals that a company’s expres-
sive standard could be opened to a greater search
for typological differentiation (tables that are less
minimalist, handles with more identity, much
more imaginative armchairs, sofas and furniture).
By looking at the prototypes and those who de-
signed them, one could almost imagine that in
the furniture sector, the discipline of Product De-
sign permits as great a proof of ability as stud-
ies in Fashion&Textile. According to the tutors,
who followed the work of the seven teams each
step of the way, the aspiring stylists, even with
the handicap of a non-specific preparation that
penalized them from the start, stood out from
a distance as having a more inspired or fanciful
“hands-on approach” compared to the more rig-
orous disposition that might have been expected
from these future designers.

The ComON project started in 2008 with a pilot
edition. In the wake of the public and critical
success, the range of the project grew under the
aegis of Confindustria Como and the intuition
of a group of young Como area entrepreneurs
with the objective of setting up a platform for
cultural exchange: not so much talent scouting
but rather a European “creative hub” which
could help young people in search of their own
destination and which found in Como and their
vocation a natural link.
Recycling, eco-responsibility and zero impact are
the themes of the 2009 edition, which, through
the three disciplinary spheres in the venture
were able to stimulate the most talented and
creative European young people into coming up
with projects and prototypes dedicated to the
final event: the Creative Week (Settimana della
Creatività ) which was held from the 12th to the
18th of October 2009 in Como and which saw the
city vibrating with creative energy, covered in
yellow and hosting shows, events and workshops
where the real protagonists were the young
people and their work.
A valued contribution to the event was made
by one of the contributing inspirational minds
behind ComON, Li Edelkoort, a world famous
trend forecaster who particularly wanted the
project. ComON’s significance and value lie in
its capacity both to involve European creative
people through the activation of osmotic and
effective collaborative relationships, and to
provide concrete support for their ambitions,
bringing them to the creative and productive
reality of one of the last real effective working
areas on a European scale, that around Como.
To evaluate the theme of sustainability and
demonstrate a real concern for the environ-
ment, ComON 2009 took part in the Life
Gate Impatto Zero® project: carbon dioxide
emissions generated by the organization of
the event were reduced and compensated for
through the creation and management of new
forests in Costa Rica.

I Corrai-ni hanno saputo recuperare alcune esperienze
From art to booksThe site that introduces Corraini says: “books,
objects, games”. And furthermore, “laboratory
of contemporary art and design”; thus the Cor-
raini editions concept is defined, a publishing
house based in Mantova with international links
and well represented in various strategic Milan
bookshops. A brave editorial choice, launched
alongside the well-consolidated business of the
art gallery with the same name (founded in 1973),
which promises a wide range of publications, al-
ways a little special, aimed at readers of all age
groups, from childhood to adults.
What is notable about Corraini’s publications
however, is not the narrative tendency in the tra-
ditional sense of the word, but rather the pleas-
ant and often surprising visualization of texts
and pictures, through the most attractive graph-
ic portrayals. This happens constantly through
both essential and functional typographic pic-
tures, so as to present the book as an attractive
and pleasing “object” which, in addition to the
valuable visual and textual content, can give it
added value as a complementary item of furni-
ture: an attractive article.
In addition to a preferential relationship with
the creations of Bruno Munari, Corraini edi-
tions include among others, books and objects
by Enzo Mari, Bob Gill, Ettore Sottsass, Ann and
Paul Rand, Leo Lionni, Michelangelo Pistoletto,
Luigi Veronesi, and Riccardo Dalisi. Publications
on Achille Castiglioni (text by Paola Antonelli
and drawings by Steven Guarnaccia), on Albe
Steiner, edited by his daughter Anna; books on
graphic design, such as those signed by Giancar-
lo Iliprandi; tributes to the past, such as Campari
Soda, with drawings from Depero to Guarnaccia
(with additions and comments by Finessi and
Mendini).
In terms of books for children, unlike countries
like England or Holland, according to criteria of
educational psychology there has been no tradi-
tion or tendency towards the visual; the Italian
habit was to remain always faithful to the illus-
trated story. Corraini have been able to retrieve
several experiences that may have been isolated
or perhaps even premature for the years in which

they were created, and re-launch them with a
fresh new feel. A particular example from the
period after the 2nd World War are the “little
works” produced by the genius Bruno Munari,
who through making use of his previous end-of-
movement futurist experiences, struck a person-
al literary vein, which expressed itself not just
through words but above all through the lan-
guage of graphic symbols. This holds true from
the first livres d’artiste of 1950-51, to the book-
games printed by Bruno Danese, to the Einaudi
“Tantibambini” series, up to several small but
weighty volumes dealing with child psychology,
in line with the theories of Jean Piaget on the
subject of cognitive development.

Maurizio and Marzia Corraini’s
idea of championing the retrieval
and representation of numerous of
Bruno Munari’s publications from
the decades preceding his own
publishing activity, is undoubtedly
praiseworthy. An undertaking that
restores certain little masterpieces
to the book trade circuit and
which allows the editor to devote
himself to the challenge, with the
help of modern industrial produc-
tion, of re-launching objects that
were once created in a craftsman-
like way.
The re-edition adventure started
in 1984 with a tiny sized volume
(10x10 square centimetres), which
Munari offered again as one of
his Unreadable books; 32 pages of
coloured paper in various cuts, and
with no text.
A Munari idea started in 1949
that became notorious two years
later, in Milan at the Arte concreta
exhibition. Munari would create
numerous variations of these art
products with an aesthetic value,
with varying print runs, from
handmade one-offs, to thousands
of copies. Other Unreadable books
would be offered in Corraini edi-
tions in 1988, 1992, 1994, and 1995.
The book I negativi-positivi, in
which projects from 1950 were
collected, was reprinted in 1986; it
presented several elaborations on
the figure-ground idea according
to the interpretations of Gestalt
phenomena. Simultaneità degli
opposti, is on a similar line, re-
published in 1989. Some years later
(1992) the suggestion of a collec-
tion of amusing drawings around
the different expressions of the
human face resulted in Alla faccia!,
with which Corraini implemented
the “Block notes” series. Other ti-
tles in this series are: Viaggio nella
fantasia, Saluti e baci, Pensare con-
fonde le idee, personal reflections
that are always highly original. Yet
again, from 1994-95, Mostra collet-
tiva di Bruno Munari; Emozioni; Il
mare come artigiano; where in this
last example, he plays and jokes
with Hokusai’s The Great Wave. In
the same series Corraini presents
personal memories and tributes
from Piero Dorazio, Concetto Poz-
zati, Vittorio Corsini, and Victor
Simonetti.
Going back to Munari, there are
several books written for children
and which became famous over
the years, such as Nella notte buia
(first edition 1956); Nella nebbia di
Milano (1968); Disegnare un albero
(1978); and a play-book from 1994:
La favola delle favole, a collec-
tion of loose coloured sheets of
paper containing traced outlines,
presented with a cover and held
together with metal clips; the
whole thing to be used for the free
creation of stories. Another genre
altogether is Le forchette di Mu-
nari, a re-edition of a project from
1958-59, which presents a happy
series of drawings in which Munari
portrays the possible gestural
expressiveness of the fork. One of
his happiest inventions remains
Le macchine di Munari, whose
first edition came out in 1942, and
brought out once again some years
ago by the same editors. Marzia
and Maurizio Corraini remember in
their own tribute “Everyone talks
about Master Munari; for us, he
was a master in the true sense, the
right sense; he stimulated in us the
desire to look, a sense of curiosity,
liberty. This wish to go forward in-
dependently, and personally, is one
of the reasons that drove us then
and still drives us now to publish
his books”.
Titles of books and dates can be
found in Giorgio Maffei’s publica-
tion, Munari. I libri, Milano, Syl-
vestre Bonnard, 2002 (republished
together with Corraini in 2007 and
reprinted in 2008 by Corraini).

In the variety of projects that come together to
define the controversial and variform identity of
the “new” Milan, sealing the transition from the
headquarters and engine of industrial activity
to a strategic centre of research and innovation,
with particular emphasis on the creativity of
fashion and design, the fact seems to stand out
that there is no contemporary arts centre capa-
ble of making the most of the most current and
important expressions of a culture that in the
past, the city and its entrepreneurial class used
to support and now do so no longer.
Not a real museum, but a place capable of being
a catalyst and crossroads for creative languages
in open debate, shared by that significant part
of the city’s inhabitants who demand for Milan
something really worthy of a city with such a
strong cosmopolitan tradition.

The transformation and re-launch of an industrial areaIn actual fact, this place already exists and it is
the result of a long and arduous journey that
testifies to the difficulties encountered by those
who wish to innovate and renew by promoting
culture as a growth factor. It is the Hangar Bic-
occa, a space devoted to art and located in the
heart of a former industrial area between Milan
and Sesto San Giovanni – the Bicocca neighbour-
hood – whose development started in the first
decades of the 1900s, where companies like Fal-
ck, Campari, Pirelli, Breda and Ansaldo built their
factories.
It is a large industrial warehouse, originally in-
tended by Ansaldo for the production of coils for
trici ferroviari.
electric railway trains engines. When the closure
of the plant in the mid 1980s posed the problem
of how to redevelop the area, the Bicocca project
was launched, one of the most important urban
transformation projects on a European scale: a
surface area of 960,000 square metres. This is
the site of the new Milan-Bicocca University
campus, together with a large theatre, the Ar-
cimboldi, research centres, the headquarters of
multinational companies and a host of residen-

The creation of the Hangar BicoccaAcquired in 2000 by the Pirelli RE property devel-
oper and bound for public use, the hangar seemed
destined to host the new Alfa Romeo museum,
then at Arese. But a couple of years later, the Fiat
group found itself in difficulty and withdrew the
project. “So, in 2004”, as Gianluca Winkler, then
Pirelli RE director of communications and today
managing director of the Fondazione Hangar Bi-
cocca, remembers, “we asked ourselves: why not
dedicate it to contemporary art, given that there
is a shortage of suitably sized places for this in
Milan?” Pirelli therefore asked the Ask (Art, Sci-
ence and Knowledge) department of the Milan
Bocconi University, then directed by Severino
Salvemini, an expert in the marketing of mu-
seum and architectural artifacts, for a feasibil-
ity study divided into a benchmarking analysis
looking at 14 industrial sites reconverted into art
and cultural centres, and an economic-financial
budget. “The estimated costs, which were con-
siderable, were reduced, in order to allow for a
maximum of around fifteen staff and an annual
budget of 4-5 million, with contributions from
companies belonging to the Fondazione. In the
meantime we organized a series of spectacular
exhibitions designed to attract the public to this
unusual location.”

we perfected the Hangar project, transforming it
from a corporate communication experience into
a real act of patronage and trying to define the
specific nature of the Milan exhibition/museum

thodox role for ourselves. First of all in terms of
space: 15,000 square metres, with few other simi-
lar examples in Europe, and then, with the pres-

installation existing today anywhere in the world.
Starting from this uniqueness, we were equipped

Arte e imprese all’Hangar
Art and business at the Hangar
Promoted by Hangar Bicocca and
Trivioquadrivio in collaboration
with Milan Catholic University, Art
For Business Forum, whose first
edition took place in November
2007, has the aim of analyzing in
depth the theme of the value of art
in the development of business and
the managerial classes of our coun-
try, and therefore the territory and
social contest in which businesses
put down roots and grow in Italy
and Europe. The forum, through
workshops and meetings led by
artists and international experts, is
intended to stimulate the birth of a
new business development model,
capable of transferring the culture,
values, creativity and sensitivity
that for centuries have been part of
the world of art to the world of or-
ganizations and management.
Darsø, associate professor at the Learning Lab
Denmark, University of Aarhus”. The Foundation’s
scientific committee had the task of directing the
work of the artistic director, nominated by them
after a precise selection process carried out after
publication of the vacancy announcement on the
Internet (another unusual detail), to which over a
hundred potential candidates replied (more than
40% of whom were foreigners). A shortlist of five
was drawn up, “entirely without political coercion
or pressure from companies”, Winkler guarantees.
And after a final examination, Chiara Bertolla was
appointed director of the Fondazione Furla and
curator of the Fondazione Querini Stampalia di
Venezia. The other governing body of the Founda-
tion is the Advisory Board, made up of interna-
tional representatives from the world of culture,
politics and economy and chaired by Dominique
de Villepin, ex French Prime Minister.
A step back…Usually, it is the public administration that de-
velops a project and suggests it to the private
sector. “In this case, the opposite happened”, as
Winkler makes clear. “Before making the birth of
the Fondazione Hangar Bicocca official, Pirelli
RE decided to take a step back, depersonalizing
the enterprise and toning down the self celebrat-
ing gesture of patronage. A genuine venture for
the city”. Pirelli appears therefore as one of the
founder members together with the Milan City
Council, the Milan Chamber of Commerce and
the Lombardy Region, with equal rights and du-
ties. The announcement of the institution of the
new cultural association took place on the 19th
February 2009 at the Villa Necchi Campiglio.
…and many steps forwardJust six months after the official ceremony, and
with the economic crisis cutting company budg-
ets, Hangar Bicocca no longer has sufficient sup-
port and resources to go ahead as planned, and
yet Winkler is optimistic: “It’s not a good mo-
ment for fund raising, but we are going ahead
with our project and, arranging our activities ac-
cording to the Foundation’s available finances”.
And Chiara Bertola has already outlined a pro-
gramme of an interdisciplinary and transversal
character, faithful to the original spirit of the
space (which has already witnessed the presence
of personalities such as the musician Ludovico
Einaudi, Peter Greenaway in a new performance,
Haim Baharier, scholar of biblical hermeneutics
[the science of explaining the Scriptures, ndt],
and Folco Terzani, with a tribute to his father
Tiziano, journalist and expert on Far Eastern
culture: “I considered the Hangar as a workshop
for meetings and mixing of contemporary lan-
guages: dance, music, literature and other crea-
tive disciplines that turn around the visual arts,
stimulating a new way of creating culture and
spreading it”. Certainly, the theme already se-
lected by the new director for 2010, Vulnerabilità,
risks displeasing those in Milan and elsewhere
who believe that, more than anything else, it is
important to make a show of force. But in order
to close with the past and look to the future, this
‘Vulnerabilità’ is perhaps the starting point from
which to construct a city and a culture open to
the world, as one would wish Milan to be seen
at the Expo, and beyond.

No limit to the contentsAnticipating the legitimization of certain liter-
ary genres, such as the whodunit or poetry, the
organizers placed no limits on the literary crea-
tions of young talents. The almost anthropologi-
cal interest in the evolution of Italian writing
pushed them into asking what, rather than how.
Thus, youthful talent was able to freely experi-
ment with different forms of writing, and the
enormous quantity of material that reached the
organizers (an average of 1,500 manuscripts per
year) statistically offered greater probabilities of
discovering interesting talent. All this guaran-
teed a mid-to-high level of quality for the publi-
cations, and, in the long term, the birth of a loyal
and ever larger public.

Distribution as a collective experienceThe authors chosen by Subway reach their read-

the coming and going of daily mobility. The ini-
tial choice of underground stations as the ideal
space for the distribution of stories combined
perfectly with the more positive spirit of some-

as “the Underground”, with its trend towards
the collectivization of the cultural experience
(music gatherings, the web...). Subway then
intercepted that part of those readers whose

here sprang the need for an immediate and di-
rect relationship with the story object. There-
fore, the booklets are displayed in special self-
service display stands called Juke Boxes which
contain one hundred copies of each story and
are refilled twice a day, for three weeks. Once
the print run has finished, the Juke boxes are
withdrawn and refurbished so as to be used
the following year, thus becoming a recogniz-
able icon, almost a sign of belonging for the
devoted readers. From an analysis of the paper
rubbish collected in the underground stations,
it turns out that the Subway stories are not
thrown away. All this indicates a particular re-
spect for the literary product and the possible
existence of enthusiasts-collectors of the vari-
ous editions.
The journey and “limited time” readingThe only formal limit imposed on the writers was
the genre of story. Beyond making things easier
for writers who were making their debut, the
stories were useful for the Subway project as a
whole. The editors wanted to reassure the reader
of the link in terms of substance and time be-
tween the underground journey and the Subway
stories not in a general way, but by using a unit
of measurement that the urban traveller knows
very well: the time between two, three, eight
stops. So the length of every story is written on
the title page, but expressed as a certain number
of stops.

The “booklet” containerThe brevity of the stories could well have given
rise to a traditional book, or collection. Instead,
the Subway project, taking its inspiration from
the famous series of “Millelire” books (1989),
chose the booklet form because it underlined
the singularity of each work, it offered genuine
visibility to each author, and it demolished the
“sacredness” of the published product by trans-
forming it into a travel object even in its material
form: light (in Calvino’s sense), flexible in its use
and clearly user-friendly.
The booklets are printed on 100% recycled paper
and have a special production process: a rotary
press is used, as with newspapers, using a par-
ticular machine adapted to the booklet’s reduced
format. The printer packs the booklets on differ-
ent pallets, one for each story: each city receives
a number of pallets equal to the number of sto-
ries. Distribution comes to a halt when all the
pallets are finished.
The graphic project As with the world of youth communication (par-
ticularly in terms of the web) the dividing line be-
tween visual art and writing is becoming smaller
and smaller, so Subway, since its beginnings paid
particular attention to the graphic aspect of the
booklets. Starting with a single coordinated im-
age which distinguished stories by colour, from
2008 every booklet had an individual cover but
recognizable within the coordinated image of
the collection.
In line with the collective and multidiscipli-
nary spirit of the venture, from 2008 Subway
opened its doors to a new category of emerg-
ing creativity: the illustrators. Through the
Copertine al Tratto competition, young illus-
trators under 35 were selected to create the
covers of the winning works. The challenge
was to produce two illustrations inspired by
one of the stories published in the previous
edition. Each winner was then associated
with one of the stories selected for publica-
tion in the current year.
Although the images of the various editions
have undergone constant evolution and the
cover illustrations have a style and expression
all their own, the strength of the project and
the Subway spirit still make the booklets imme-
diately recognizable and identifiable with the
competition.

Subway and the web There was no way that a joint production like
Subway would fail to make it onto the web, in
the most consistent and harmonious way: writ-
ing, reading all the published works, views of
previous editions, dialogue and debate through
a literary blog... The organizers define www.sub-
way-letteratura.org as not so much a site, more
a kind of virtual Juke-box that puts readers, writ-
ers, poets, and all the various protagonists of the
show in contact. A tool that extends the readers’
real journey along other imaginary lines.
Glocal writing and the City CouncilsFrom the limitless world of the web to the
world of Italian City Councils who have em-
braced the philosophy of the competition and
have supported the venture. In keeping with
the glocal spirit, Subway doesn’t simply dis-
tribute a national product locally, but asks its
authors to give their point of view on their real
or imaginary urban reality, and so side by side
with the national jury, there are local editors
who have the task of selecting the best writers
coming from their cities. These authors are of-
fered the chance to win the City of … Special
Prize, awarded by different City Councils, and
naturally, local distribution of the story. The
success of the venture has exceeded national
boundaries and in the near future Subway
plans to export its “moving culture” project to
other European cities.
