Logistics is the management of the f low of good, information and other resources, including energy and people, between the point of origin and the point of consumption inorder to meet the requirements of consumers (frequently, andoriginally, military organizations).

It involves the integration of information, Transportation,Inventory, Warehousing, material handling, and Packaging, andoccasionally Security.

Logistics is a channel of the Supply Chain which adds the value oftime and place utility.

Today the complexity of production logistics can be modeled, analyzed, visualized and optimized by PlantSimulation software.

Logistics is considered to have originated in the military'sneed to supply themselves with arms, ammunition and

rations as they moved from their base to a forwardposition. In ancient Greek, Roman and Byzantine empires, there were military officers with the title Logisticians who

were responsible for financial and supply distributionmatters.

The Oxford English dictionary defines logistics as: Thebranch of Military Science having to do with procuring, maintaining and transporting material, personnel andfacilities. Another dictionary definition is: "The time-related positioning of resources." As such, logistics iscommonly seen as a branch of Engineering which creates"people systems" rather than "machine systems."

Logistics management is that part of the supplychain which plans, implements and controls the efficient, effective forward and reverse flow and storage of goods, services and related information between the point oforigin and the point of consumption in order to meet

customer & legal requirements. A professional working inthe field of logistics management is called a logistician.

The Chartered Institute of Logistics & Transport (CILT)was established in the U.K in 1919 and was granted

the Royal Charter in 1926. The Chartered Institute is oneof professional bodies or institutions for the logistics &transport sectors, that offers such professionalqualification or degree in logistics management.

As a business concept evolved only in the 1950s. This wasmainly due to the increasing complexity of supplying one'sbusiness with materials and shipping out products in anincreasingly globalized supply chain, calling for experts in

the field who are called Supply Chain Logisticians. This canbe defined as having the right item in the right quantity atthe right time at the right place for the right price in theright condition to the right customerand is the science of

process and incorporates all industry sectors. The goal oflogistics work is to manage the fruition of project lifecycles, supply chains and resultant efficiencies.

In business, logistics may have either internal focus(inbound logistics), or external focus (outbound logistics)

covering the flow and storage of materials from point oforigin to point of consumption functions logisticianincludeinventorymanagement, purchasing, transportation,

warehousing, consultation and the organizingand planning of these activities. Logisticians combine aprofessional knowledge of each of these functions so thatthere is a coordination of resources in an organization. There are two fundamentally different forms of logistics.

One optimizes a steady flow of material through a networkof transport links and storage nodes. The other coordinatesa sequence of resources to carry out some project.

The term is used for describing logistic processes within anindustry. The purpose of production logistics is to ensure thateach machine and workstation is being fed with the rightproduct in the right quantity and quality at the right point in

time. The issue is not the transportation itself, but to streamline and

control the flow through the value adding processes andeliminates non-value adding ones. Production logistics can beapplied in existing as well as new plants. Manufacturing in an

existing plant is a constantly changing process. Machines areexchanged and new ones added, which gives the opportunity toimprove the production logistics system accordingly. Productionlogistics provides the means to achieve customer response andcapital efficiency.

Production logistics is getting more and moreimportant with the decreasing batch sizes. In manyindustries (e.g. mobile phone) batch size one is theshort term aim. This way even a single customerdemand can be fulfilled in an efficient way. Track andtracing, which is an essential part of productionlogistics - due to product safety and product reliabilityissues - is also gaining importance especially in the

    automotive and the medical industry

With so many crucial factors and regulationsgoverning the transport of chemicals, the need forplanning is very obvious. It is the job of the transportcompany's logistics planning team to ensure that the

load can be collected, transported by a suitable route, and delivered on time and in good condition. This mayinvolve both road and rail transport. It the chemicalsare to be imported or exported, the logistics team will

also obtain timetables from ferries and cargo shippingcompanies. For road transport, computerized routeplanners are available to provide a full route timetable.

You may already be familiar with Microsoft's "Auto

route Express". This type of software can provide routemaps and a full listing of start time, times of arrival attowns and villages on route, and scheduled arrivaltime at the final destination. The software can plan for

the quickest route, the most direct route, routes usingonly motorways and main roads

Working with a combination of computerized routeplanners and a set of rail and shipping timetables, the

logistics team works out the best schedule for thecustomers delivery

When logistics cannot support an operation all elsebecomes irrelevant. But despite the critical role of logistics,

joint doctrine does not provide managers with reviewcriteria to evaluate the logistic plan. Joint doctrine,

however, does give competent managers a hierarchy ofconsiderations for the operation plan. The principles ofbroad guidance for the concept development phase.Operation checklists identify lesser but not insignificant

issues that require attention during the execution phase.Between these two extremes, doctrine contributes two setsof midlevel standards: operational considerations andoperation plan review criteria. Operational considerationsaddress ends, ways, means, and risks

A corporate mission is a statement setting out lone- range goalsunique to each organization elucidating the business thecompany wants to be in, who its customers are, its basic beliefsabout business, and its goals of survival, growth and profitability. Objective and goals set the targets which are to be achieved in

the long-term in order to fulfill the mission of the firm. In orderto achieve the long-term objectives and goals, alternativestrategies or action plans need to be evaluated in the context ofthe environment faced by the firm. From these alternatives, specific strategies must be selected for implementation in order

to meet the objectives and goals that will fulfill the mission ofthe firm. Hence, business strategy is a long range game plan ofan organization and provides a road map of how to achieve thecorporate mission. The strategic or long-term plans for the firmare developed at the highest levels of management of the firm.

The strategic plans for each of the functions of the firm, such asMarketing, Operations, Logistics, etc that are derived from thefirms strategic plans are developed at the highest level of the

concerned function. The strategic plans with in the functionneed to be detailed in the form of tactical and operational plansat the tactical and operational plans of the management in therespective functions.
